3.5
I'm so mixed about how I feel about this graphic novel. The premise is pretty interesting, but it's similar to many others that I read. Ellie is a stereotypical "adorkable" type of character, where she's a cute but dorky klutz who can't seem to hold down a job cause she's just that clumsy. But then ends up getting involved with a magical world, and ends up getting a job that deals with magic, cause it's what she's secretly good at or has skill in.. Think of characters like Bee from Bee & Puppycat or Clary from The Mortal Instruments. It's meant to be relatable, but with how a lot of media is currently overusing this character trope, it becomes irritating. Thankfully, it's not played up too much. The pacing is also a bit off. I feel like it went from Ellie finding out she has powers and magical potential, straight into her working in the magical world like she's been doing it for years. In spite of this, the story does have some good elements. They do build a fair amount of intrigue into Ichabod and into Ellie's past. The volume ends on a cliffhanger, though it feels more like the chapter got cut off, rather than an end-of-season stinger. The art is fine, it screams mid-2000s webcomic to me, but if you're not extremely familiar with that, you wouldn't notice. I may not absolutely love this graphic novel, it is enjoyable enough that I would want to continue reading it.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this material. This was fun and quick. The timeline is a little fuzzy to me, but I might not be understanding it correctly, The main characters are interesting and fun. I mean one of their heads is a pumpkin for crying out loud. Like most graphic novels that are part of a series there is so much more that must be planned in the future. For those that have read the Webtoon.... no spoilers please.

Why haven’t I read this sooner?! Oh my goodness it was so good! I got a digital copy of this sent to me from netgalley and I just want to say thank you so much because I’m hooked! The story and the art in this one was fantastic and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

So our main character finds out after losing yet another job that she isn’t a screw up she is magical. So with learning to control her new abilities she works with a paranormal investigator who just happens to have a pumpkin as his head, and together they solve cases and vanquish monsters. This was such a fun read and I loved learning about all the different creatures that are secretly in their world… also please judge me for this but pumpkin man is actually kinda hot okay🙈 highly recommend checking this one out!

Ellie, the twenty-something protagonist of "Third Shift Society" is facing unemployment and debt when she runs into Ichabod, a paranormal detective with a pumpkin for a head who offers Ellie a job uncovering paranormal peculiarities.
Meredith Moriarty's art is a treat. I love how she evoked such a depth of expression in her characters. Ellie, Ichabod, and the rest of the cast play off of each other naturally. While Ichabod remains an enigma by the end of Volume One, we do see that a bond of trust has formed between the two paranormal detectives.
Looking forward to Volume Two already!

I absolutely love Third Shift Society! I read the first few pages when it came out on Webtoon and fell in love with the main characters. Ellie and Ichabod's banter and friendship is so well written, and the humor in it is the prefect balance to the spooks. The first volume ended on a cliffy that has me already ready for the next one.

I was immediately intrigued by the cover of this book and had to read it. I'm not sure I was fully prepared for how quickly this went by though! The story was different and catchy, and the webtoon layout made it easy to follow. I enjoyed the art and the story, but it did make me feel a little like I was reading a children's book.

I really loved this. The episodic chapters reminded me a bit of The X-Files and Buffy as Ellie and Ichabod investigated "otherworldly phenomena." And the artwork is great. I can't wait to read volume 2.

A fun story. I enjoyed the fantasy aspect of the story. The colors feel perfect for the fantasy setting. Letters look good and do not interfere with the art at all.

4 stars

A cute fast paced supernatural graphic novel. There was not much character development, one developed abilities and she was surprised for about 2 seconds and then it was just accepted. No questioning why or looking into how she was processing it. So don't go into this expecting deep fleshed out characters, but it was fun. We followed the two main characters while they solved cases involving ghosts, demons and other spooky things. I enjoyed this book.

The art in this book is beautiful, and the story is fun. Overall this was a really quick and easy read. Reading this a couple days before halloween is perfect, it really sets the mood for the snoopy season. (And I'm embarrassed to say I am attracted to a pumpkin headed man....)

I have been reading Third Shift Society since it first debuted on WEBTOONs. The fact that it’s getting a print release makes me incredibly happy. Getting to arc read it is even better.

For those who haven’t read the WEBTOON version, Third Shift Society is a paranormal story about Ellie, a woman down on her luck, getting accidentally dragged into supernatural happenings when she sees a pumpkin-headed man fighting a monster. After discovering she has powers, Ellie gets offered a job by the man (Ichabod).

All of season one of the WEBTOON fits into volume one. I’m in love with the character designs. The story does take a bit to get going but I love it. I highly recommend picking up this volume.

Thoughts: When I first started reading this, I was unsure if I was going to enjoy it. BUT I gave it a chance, and it really pulled me in. It had exciting monsters, and it was just so fun to read. I love Ichabod! This was a great fall read and I would love to read more! ALSO look at this cover art! It’s SO good!

This was a really fun read! I would definitely continue on reading. I loved the artwork and Ichabod was a great character. It was hard to read with the watermarks across the pages though!

This was a really fun start to a series!

Third shift society starts off with Ellie at the end of her rope. She's broke, bills are overdue, and her job is shutting down. She also finds out she has psychic powers and gets offered a job working with a man with a pumpkin for a head. The premise is a little silly and the story so far isn't life altering the way some graphic novel series are, but it's fun, unique, and fast-paced! Volume One ends pretty abruptly and I'm definitely looking forward to what comes next!

(I do want to add that WEBTOON did a huge disservice when they formatted this for NetGalley. They have a copyright watermark over each page, which is totally fine, but it is at full opacity with the artwork and the dialogue text, which made it difficult to read whenever it overlapped. I am not deducting anything from my rating because of this but if WEBTOON partners with NetGalley in the future I would highly recommend they fix that, as it would keep me from applying for their graphic novels. It made it difficult to read.)

My Selling Pitch:
Do you want to read a supernatural procedural comic? It’s charming and delightfully cliche.

Pre-reading:
Guys, I really love pretty, spooky graphic novels.

Thick of it:
You know, I’m very thankful to receive things early, but if you put a watermark over the entire page that ruins the art, I’m not happy.

She’s giving Bloom from the Winx

Why is the pumpkin head hot? Samantha, horny jail.

I mean, yeah, that’s also my priority.

It’s got a breakneck pace and it’s cliché as fuck, but you know what, I’m in.

My brain is already like how do you kiss a pumpkin?

This is funny. This is cute.

They’re very one-shotty.

It’s funny. It’s very TV sequency.

I do wish we saw them getting hired for these cases.

It’s very wholesome and cliché.

She’s gonna have to fuck a bug.

Wait, that’s how it ends? That’s not an ending!

Post-reading:
This is a cute little cliche-filled story. It’s similar to Lucifer and all those other supernatural procedurals. They’re just fun. They don’t take themselves too seriously. They’re not worried about plotholes or much world-building. You just suspend your disbelief and have a good time.

The art is cartoony and expressive. It’s very efficient storytelling. It does all feel a bit one-shotty. I wish we had more pages filling in the blanks between events. It’s a little abrupt with how she goes from meeting him to immediately working cases.

Like a lot of graphic novel collections, the volume doesn’t really have a complete story arc. It just sort of ends and you’re waiting for more. It’s a pet peeve of mine. I think each entry should be satisfying on its own.

Who should read this:
Supernatural procedural fans

Do I want to reread this:
No

I was drawn in by the cover because heeelllllloooo pumpkin head man in a suit. 👀 😂 But while there were some nice episodic stuff and an okay-ish setup, it was a bit too bare bones for me. There's sort of a wink wink nudge nudge at something potentially budding between Ichabod and Ellie, but it lacked any actual camraderie build up between the two, and things seemed a bit too passive in the plot. There were no actual big problems for me, but yeah, just a tad too simple for my taste so I wouldn't really want to continue. The art was okay, but the backgrounds/environments ended up being solid colors way too often that it cheapened a bit of the wordlbuilding too. Overall, it's missing a bit of that charm and spark for me.

This is a very cute urban fantasy about two psychic paranormal investigators... one of whom happens to have a pumpkin for a head. I kept getting homage vibes to other similarly themed books but I'm unsure if the homages were actually there, or if as a fan of the genre I'm just reading into the common tropes within it lol Like I kept thinking "this is like a cutesy PG Hack/Slash!" and I loved it (I also love Hack/Slash).

Ellie is the everyman protagonist, the relatable struggling girl-next-door who suddenly learns she's a Magic Girl (possibly from an errant wish, which I'm looking forward to finding out more about in future issues). Her partner is the pumpkin-headed Ichabod, who plays the role of old hat, the "grizzled" detective who's seen it all. I had to give the comic 4 stars though because we honestly learn VERY little about these two in these initial issues of the comic... and yet, Moriarty also already starts setting up a potential romance between the two? Perhaps I'd be more invested or excited if I actually knew anything about Ellie or Ichabod.

There's also a couple sidekicks, including a vampire with a heart of gold, and the possibility of a big bad on their way. It was all very successful in giving cozy fall vibes, with light spooks, and enough of a story hook to keep me coming back.

I will say though that if the next five issues don't at least start to tell us more about our two leads that I don't know I'll continue... I stopped watching Lost for similar reasons. I need some answers at the very least!

I absolutely loved this graphic novel! Awesome artwork and a story line that kept me engaged the entire time. I am definitely going to keep this series on my radar. You should definitely give this one a try. You'll be glad you did!

I liked it enough to finish it. I think it has potential to improve over time, but this was fairly unoriginal and lacking in nuance.
