I received an audiobook version of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This book reminded me of my love for YA horror. It reminded me of how I felt reading books like I Know What You did Last Summer as a teenager, and as an older millennial I'm all about the nostalgia. I found Bex to be a really interesting character, and a bit relatable as I also often felt more interested in books than people in high school. As far as I know, I'm not autistic though (although being an older millennial the possibility of me simply not being diagnosed is not insignificant).
This story kept me guessing until the bitter end. Every time I thought I had figured things out, I was simply wrong. But I'm not the only one who fell for the misdirects.
The narration had a kind of monotone quality to it for the narrative parts of the story. But the different characters voices were distinct and nuanced.
Overall I give Who Haunts You 4.7832 out of 5 stars.
Filled with eerie to startling haunting moments, authentic neurodivergent representation, and a twisted mystery, Who Haunts You is an engrossing read.
"Who Haunts You" by Mark Wheaton is an intriguing read that blends supernatural elements with a gripping mystery. The premise is interesting: a series of chilling hauntings that compel the protagonist to uncover the dark secrets behind these spectral visitations. Wheaton crafts an atmospheric narrative, drawing readers into a world where the lines between the living and the dead blur.
However, while the book offers an engaging plot and well-developed characters, it often feels like it would shine brighter on the big screen than it does on the page. The vivid descriptions and suspenseful scenes seem tailor-made for a movie adaptation, where visual and auditory elements could heighten the eerie mood and bring the haunting encounters to life in a way that words alone sometimes struggle to achieve.
The pacing of the novel is a bit uneven, with some parts dragging while others rush by, leaving certain plot points underdeveloped. Despite this, Wheaton's ability to create tension and keep readers guessing about the true nature of the hauntings is commendable. The climax, in particular, is a standout, providing a satisfying resolution to the mystery.
In conclusion, "Who Haunts You" is a solid read for fans of supernatural thrillers, but its true potential might be best realized as a film. The story's visual potential and suspenseful atmosphere would undoubtedly make for a thrilling cinematic experience.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.

It was such a great story. I would say give this one a try. I will continue to follow this author. Way to go to this author for not letting me down.
I highly enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook. Kept me listening.
"Who Haunts You" by Mark Wheaton is a chilling and atmospheric YA paranormal thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Wheaton's writing is taut and suspenseful, drawing readers into a world where the line between reality and nightmare blurs with terrifying consequences.
The plot is intricately crafted, with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end. Wheaton expertly builds tension throughout the narrative, weaving together psychological horror and supernatural intrigue to create a truly gripping story. The eerie atmosphere of the novel evokes a sense of dread and unease that permeates every page. From the creepy old mansion to the dark secrets lurking in the protagonist's past, the setting is vividly rendered and adds depth to the story.
Character development is another strong point of the novel, with the characters brought to life with depth and complexity. As Rebecca, the protagonist, delves deeper into the mystery surrounding her past, she must confront her own demons and fears, leading to a satisfying and cathartic resolution.
Overall, "Who Haunts You" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and horror fiction. With its gripping plot, atmospheric setting, and well-developed characters, it's a short book that will haunt readers until the final page.
I really enjoyed the blend of supernatural fiction and thriller in this book. The high school setting was really fun. This book is a great YA choice for high schoolers looking to read more of the thriller genre.
I know this is very short – under 200 pages. But so many short books manage to be around that length and it works. This wasn’t the case here. Most of the time it felt like the story was meant to be a full story. Like it was leading up to be a full horror story – 300 or more pages. Nearer to the end it seemed to remember it was actually meant to be a short book and moved the timeline up. That meant the ending’s pace didn’t match up with the rest of the book’s and that made for an unhappy reader. I’ve begun to realise I don’t like mismatched pacing in books.
I don’t really have much to say about the main character. She wasn’t really memorable? I liked that she was autistic (the author is too) but other than that I don’t really remember much of her. None of this book really stood out at all to me. I think I liked a bit of the mystery but obviously, not enough I would remember more.
"Who Haunts You" by Mark Wheaton is a gripping tale that blurs the lines between psychological thriller and supernatural haunting. With its fast-paced narrative, the book keeps readers on their toes from start to finish. Despite its brevity, Wheaton skillfully crafts a suspenseful atmosphere that earns it a solid four-star rating. Fans of both genres will find themselves drawn into this intriguing and mysterious story.
Wow! I have to say, this book took me completely by surprise! It was incredible, full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't have any expectations, but I was utterly blown away by this YA supernatural and psychological thriller/horror novel. It's the perfect book to kick off the spooky season! There's just something about the combination of the supernatural elements with the psychological aspects that makes it so captivating.
One of the things that struck me was how the story explored the fear of the supernatural and the psychological effects of feeling like no one believes you. It's terrifying to think about the impact that would have on someone's psyche, regardless of whether the events are supernatural. The fear, the helplessness, the frustration—it's all too easy to imagine how those emotions would consume a person. It's something that everyone can relate to on a primal level, and that's what makes it so chilling.
I'd like to thank the publisher for providing me with an ARC.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It's a fun and fast paced read. I loved the characters and their development. I'd highly recommend this book for teens wanting to explore the thriller genre.
I was actually really pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed this book. Bex is so unhinged and relatable and I love her. It is so refreshing to read a YA book and see a real young adult as a MC. She's flawed and messy and curious in all the wrong ways but for all the right reasons, what is more human than that? The way the supernatural meets mental health is so scarily intriguing and I was on my toes the entire second half of this book. it was awesome.
Thank you Netgalley & Mark Wheaton for the audio ARC of this book
From the very start I was totally gripped. It was spooky and I loved the pace of the book. It was twisty and contained some really clever ways to make you question what's real life and what's super natural!
I loved the development of our main character and the representation of a neuro-divergent protagonist
The ending was excellent and I loved that it was left open!!
Overall an enjoyable YA horror/thriller. Great narration and pace
I thought this was a really great young adult horror novel! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job and really emphasized the creep factor. I also appreciated how well the autism representation was handled!
I always wonder with these YA books....WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?! This was a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I can not sing praises high enough for an author that has a main character that is neuro-divergent! I LOVED the realistic look into what her life and struggles are!
The humor and suspicion she has with how her classmates keep dying felt exactly like how I would have handled it.
The characters are relatable and fun and only at the very end do you finally see what is happening.
I highly recommend!
"Who Haunts You" by Mark Wheaton delivers a riveting YA Psychological Suspense/Horror experience that kept me hooked from start to finish. In this chilling tale, high school senior Rebecca "Bex" finds herself thrust into a series of inexplicable deaths among her fellow seniors. What begins as seemingly unrelated incidents takes a sinister turn as Bex uncovers eerie connections, discovering that her peers believed they were haunted by long-dead relatives their own families deny ever existed. As Bex grapples with the haunting presence of an evil spectre, she realizes she must unravel the mysteries surrounding these deaths before she becomes the next victim.
Mark Wheaton crafts an extraordinary narrative that seamlessly blends psychological suspense and horror elements. The audiobook, skillfully narrated by Annalee Scott, enhances the immersive experience by bringing the characters to life.
The suspenseful plot kept me on the edge of my seat, and Wheaton's portrayal of Bex, a high school senior with a neurodivergent brain, adds a unique layer to the story. Wheaton sensitively explores Bex's exceptional talents and the challenges posed by her neurodivergence, creating a protagonist whose struggles and strengths elicit both empathy and understanding from readers.
While thoroughly enjoying the book, the anticipation of a potential sequel lingered in my mind. Despite this curiosity, the author successfully wraps up the story with a satisfying conclusion, leaving readers both fulfilled and intrigued.
"Who Haunts You" is an ideal choice for those seeking a suspenseful and intriguing horror story that delves into the paranormal and the darker aspects of human nature. With its fast-paced plot and a neurodivergent protagonist at its core, the book offers a refreshing take on the genre.
I am grateful to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Mark Wheaton's "Who Haunts You" is a haunting journey into the unknown that captivates with its suspenseful narrative and memorable characters.
Interesting book. I enjoyed the character development. Bex was a quirky and fun character. I enjoyed the narrator and felt the narrator really gave life to Bex.
This was a fairly creepy horror book for YA. it is definitely a book teens and adults can enjoy equally.
I enjoyed the pacing for the most part, but the ending felt rushed. Other than that, great book!
In this audio, production is key. It's not over produced. There isn't a soundtrack, no clinking dishes or murmuring of crowds. In fact, the narration is quite understated and even toned. That makes the harsh whisper of the ghost even more startling when it comes, especially when you're wearing earbuds. It's disconcertingly intimate. The plot follows a largely expected path but takes some startling turns at the end. It's a unique read that genuine benefits from the audio format.
Who Haunts You is an evocative, spine-chilling, atmospheric psychological horror YA novel written by Mark Wheaton.
Wheaton pushes you instantly into the story, introducing to you the protagonist, Bex, a high schooler with autism who experiences around her eerie, confusing, and scary situations; that bring her closer to the brink of insanity.
I enjoyed how the writer portrayed the protagonist's autism, her difficulty with certain aspects of daily life activity, and her fear of not being accepted. Something that, for nondiverget people, is as easy as gulping down a glass of water.
The plot is a whirlwind of emotion that kept me intrigued and made me guess till the end.
An end that surprised me and didn't expect at all.
I highly recommend this book to all those who are searching for something different, new, and diversity.
I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook too, and I enjoyed the narrator's voice and way of portray the characters and the story. She created the right atmosphere; eerie, spine-chilling, scary, and spectral.
A big thanks to Off Limits Press and Netgalley which provide me with an ARC review copy.
This supernatural thriller plunges into a chilling world of doubt and isolation. The narrative revolves around a young woman battling unseen forces and disbelief as friends vanish around her. The haunting itself is unique, adding a layer of unsettling mystery. While psychological themes simmer beneath the surface, the focus remains on the propulsive plot, expertly weaving fear and helplessness into a gripping experience.
This novel's brilliance lies in its ability to tap into a primal fear: being unheard and disbelieved. It lures us in with the familiar, then plunges us into the unknown, forcing us to confront our own vulnerabilities. It's a thrilling escapade, a chilling ghost story, and a poignant exploration of resilience, all masterfully distilled into a page-turning masterpiece.
