Crossword Puzzles for Brain Fitness is a nice collection of puzzles set and curated by Aimee Lucido and Matthew Stock. Released 14th Nov 2023 by Penguin Random House on their Zeitgeist imprint, it's 240 pages and is available in paperback format.

These are well written American style crosswords set and written by two well known compilers (including NYT and LATimes crosswords). The puzzles are arranged by difficulty, from easy to hard. This particular volume is printed with enlarged print, making it more accessible for sight-challenged cruciverbalists.

The chapters are set up as 30 day challenges, starting with the easy puzzles and moving to more challenging ones.

Five stars. Delivers precisely what's promised on the cover, 90 days of well formatted, clear, correct crossword puzzles.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A decent crossword puzzle book, however, whether these are the correct or accurate difficulty for an individual is subjective. It's great for traveling with on public transport e.g. a long distance train as I find those trips extremely tedious so something to fill the time in and make it pass a little quicker is always good.

As someone who enjoys daily crossword puzzles for fun and brain stimulation, I find that the hardest thing is to find puzzles that are hard enough but not too hard. I want to be able to find the solutions but I want to work for it.
This book had a great medium skill level along with the right amount of variety.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me preview this

I worked myself through these puzzles and found them to be engaging without being frustrations. There was no really big challenge but there were some puzzles that required deduction. A good baance

This book kept my brain engaged and had me enjoying working the puzzles the whole time. Sometimes I find crosswords too hard for me but working the different levels from easy up to difficult really helped my brain stay focused. This book gave me confidence to try out more crossword books. I would definitely recommend this book

I'm a big fan of the NYT crossword puzzles, so I thought I would give this a go. I like how the puzzles increase in difficulty as you go along. This would be a great way to kil.l time during travel or just at home on a weekend.

My one issue is that it was nearly impossible to do these crossword puzzles digitally, so I was not able to solve any of the puzzles as a whole.

Thank you to Netgalley and Zeitgeist for the digital ARC. All opinions are my own.

Before you even indulge in this review or the book, here are some fun facts for you to marvel over: (Courtesy the internet)

* Did you know that the very first crossword puzzle ever published was in the New York World in 1913, using the name Word Cross? Of course, the crossword puzzle existed much earlier, but no solid history can be found.

* According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a person who enjoys doing crossword puzzles is called a ‘Cruciverbalist’.

* In 1924, The New York Times predicted that crossword puzzles were a fad which the general public would soon get over. Not only did this prediction turn out to be fantastically misguided, it was even more so considering its source. Today, The New York Times is one of the most widely known and most done crossword puzzles in the world.

* Roger Squires is One of the Most Prolific Producers of Crossword Puzzles. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Squires holds the record with nearly 75,000 puzzles made, and over 2 million clues written!

* While there are many remarkable people who have committed their lives to crossword puzzles, one of the most noteworthy is the editor of The New York Times crossword puzzle, Will Shortz. He knew from a young age that these puzzles would be his life’s endeavor; he graduated from the University of Indiana with a degree in Enigmatology, or, the study of puzzles. To date, he is the only person known to have achieved this degree.

It is often said that solving crosswords is good for the brain. That may indeed be so but I also find that solving them is fun. Here is a good collection of puzzles that range in difficulty for easy to tough. I really liked the section at the start of the book that gave some advice on solving.

This title looks like a fun and (sometimes) challenging one. I think that I will buy the hard copy so that I can solve them.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Zeitgeist for this title. All opinions are my own.

Not sure how to rate a crossword puzzle book.

I needed this to keep my mind stimulated. I find the puzzles to be challenging, just the way I like. It helps to keep my mind sharp, so I guess it serves it purpose.

Thank you to #netgalley and #arc for this review.

I love crossword puzzles, but I'm often bad at the NYT crossword after Tuesday, so this book is great for helping me (and other new players) learn the ropes and tricks in crosswords. I enjoyed doing these puzzles

An excellent set of crossword puzzles that kept me entertained during a long flight. A few of the puzzles I struggled with but I expected that.

I have loved solving crossword puzzles since I was in middle school. This book has puzzles solvable by all levels of experience. Take the challenge to see if you can step up your skills to solve even the "hard" ones. A great gift for anyone who routinely has to wait for someone else. A great gift for yourself too!

I love the idea of puzzles to promote mental fitness and daily brain training. As a concept, I'm into it - I love any book that promises a quick and enjoyable path to gain. Though the introduction tees up the idea of working a puzzle a day over 30 days, graduating to more advanced puzzles over time, I would have liked to see this more strongly in the title. Maybe it's just me, but I'm a sucker to a '30 days to better ( )' books or programs.. This is - or could be positioned to puzzle fans as puzzling with a purpose., or puzzles with brain benefit as it were.

I'd like to see inclusion of a simple way to self-assess ingoing brain fitness and post-puzzle solving improvements.

Perhaps there's a website that accompanies the book. If so, I missed that.

I also missed having a visual representation of a crossword - this was a list of across / down clues, but without a visual...I'm not sure it's a crossword puzzle. The ebook - or at least the Kindle version on my screen - had some spacing issues which made sorting the clues an unintentional puzzle unto itself.

May be a better experience in print, but was not a great one as an ebook at least in this advance preview.

I enjoy crossword puzzles, and this looks like a great, accessible book designed to keep one’s brain actively challenged. I like how it mentions that using a dictionary isn’t cheating, it’s learning. A very good point. I also appreciate how it’s set up as a 90-day challenge - a great way to fold it into your daily routine.

Thank you Aimee Lucido, Matthew Stock, Zeitgeist, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
