Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC copy!
This is a lighthearted middle grade romp about Phoebe, a girl whose parents are wildlife biologists who move to West Virginia. As Phoebe explores the forest, she encounters a goblin named Gnish who leads her on an adventure into a fantasy world. She is immediately immersed in battles with trolls, a witch, and has to protect a griffin’s egg.
Overall this book was not my cup of tea, but I think that some kids out there will like it. I found the characters fairly flat and therefore wasn’t super invested. I also thought the pacing was too frenetic. But some kids will love the fast-paced, never ending plot tension. I also found the plot points to be altogether too conveniently resolved. I suppose I just wanted more depth from the novel overall. It won’t stick with me, although I enjoyed Phoebe’s character.
The Griffin's Egg is a tale of growing up. But it is also a tale of goblins and satyrs and griffins.
This middle grade fantasy has everything one desires of middle grade fantasies, A simple world with gradual world building, a protagonist that struggles internally and externally and a magical helpers that get along for the ride, with their own stories to teach a lesson. It is story I told my daughter, slowly and gradually each night, as she invested in its characters and had fun with them.
If you are a middle grade fantasy reader, enthusiast, this book with check all your boxes.
DNF way before I reached the halfway point - the writing was way too immature, even for a book meant for kids. I couldn't force myself to keep reading it.

This is a fun middle-grade fantasy story sure to capture the attention of your fantasy-loving students. Phoebe moves through this adventure fighting off magical creatures before she has to fight the Dark Mistress. I enjoyed this story, but I think it fits best with students who already love magic-filled stories and fantasy (not as much of a crossover book to hook kids into a genre). With that in mind, I recommend it for addition to the collection!
When Phoebe gets lost in the woods of West Virginia, she meets a goblin carrying a griffin's egg. She soon becomes wrapped up in the need to protect the egg from a dark witch and to help her new goblin friend. With adventure at every turn, it's a wonder Phoebe knows who to trust. Thankfully she was wearing an old cloak of her grandfather's which happens to have magical powers and Phoebe soon discovers she is a witch. Using her powers to protect the egg and defend the Hollow from Lucinda the dark mistress, Phoebe discovers an old secret and a new friend.
It was a great book! I like the author's way of writting and would love to read more from him.
If this becomes a series, I would love to read it. I need Phoebe and Icarus to have adventures... in both worlds if possible (pretty please?)
I fell in love with the cover and then fell in love with this lovely fairy tale, a well plotted and compelling novel that features well rounded characters
The world building is well done and the author is a good storyteller
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
A delightful world is built for readers as Phoebe Gray falls out of this one and into one with an endearing goblin who needs her help. She has no idea how she can do that, until he helps her find her magic, and that she is possessed of a very specific skillset. She traverses with him and others (a mother griffin in distress, for instance) and learns more about herself than she was ever going to learn in her West Virginia home town!
A great read for middle-graders and anyone else who needs to fall out of this world and into another one from time to time. A true delight!
*A sincere thank you to Cole Poindexter, The Wild Rose Press, and NetGalley for an ARC to read and independently review.* #TheGriffinsEgg #NetGalley
What a most DELIGHTFUL tale! The plotting is superb, the descriptive settings vivid, and the characters (human and Otherworldly) are so endearing! Young Phoebe, the child MC (age 10) is a brave and intrepid explorer, and her new Goblin companion Gnish-Gnash is adorable and often wry. The antagonists are scary but not terrifyingly so, and the story is suitable for readers upper-elementary and older. Also is great as a chapter book for bedtime stories.
I really enjoyed the Narrator, Cole Poindexter, who truly brings the story to life and renders the tale even more special (also a great bedtime story listening experience!).
I will start my review by saying I was given an advanced reader copy of the book in return for an honest review.
This is a wonderful story filled with magic, danger and adventure. Well written and fast paced read. Perfect if your looking for something fun and have a love of creatures.
An adorably cute tale filled with magic, adventure and excellent worldbuilding. Poindexter crafts a compelling tale that tells the power of friendship, bravery and magical characters like goblins, elves and satyrs! It’s fast paced and an easy read perfect for any middle-graders or fans of Liz Flanagan’s work. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC in exchange for honest review.
The Griffin's Egg was unfortunately a disappointing read. I found the writing lacking in world building details and plot line information due to disjointed writing. The magic of the world and magical creatures were interesting but from the start of the story I found the story odd as the main character went from walking in the woods in Illinois to suddenly being in a magical world. I just felt the disjointed writing left me confused and much to be desired.
Phoebe Gray is out in the forest one day and suddenly realizes she is lost. She spots a strange creature, who trips, and releases an egg. Just like that, Phoebe is drawn into an adventure featuring gnomes, trolls, talking cats, and griffins. And of course there is a Dark Mistress to be defeated.
This book is in many ways an homage to children's fantasies of the past, while still managing to be its own story. I enjoyed the story about Phoebe and the friends she makes along the way. She is a brave and compassionate heroine. I like the way her kindness won her allies. All round, this is a satisfying middle grade fantasy.
Phoebe has gone out to the woods in West Virginia to explore while her parents are busy working. She is happy because she has finally gotten to wear her purple cape that was her grandpa’s. He died before she was born. As she explores, she realizes that she is lost. Just as she decided on a route that hopefully take her back to her parents. She hears a rustle. Phoebe worries it might be a bear. She can’t remember what her father told her to do in case she ran into one. Suddenly, out walks a strange looking creature. She decides to stay quiet . She hears him muttering to himself when a brown object falls out of his pocket. Phoebe yells out to the creature that turns out to be a goblin. Phoebe gives him the brown object which he hadn’t realized that it had fallen out of his bag. As she learns his name is Gnish-Gnash preferably called Gnish. She asks Gnish what the brown object is. When Gnish tells her it’s a griffin egg, Phoebe asks what a griffin is. Gnish can’t believe that she doesn’t know. He tells her his story ending it with trying to find a safe place to hide the egg so Lucinda the Dark Mistress can’t get it. Why does she want it? As they travel, Phoebe will meet all sorts of creatures, some good and some bad.. She discovers the purple cape is magic. How did that happen?
The author has written a story that has many twists and turns. It is a magical story that tells us how important family and friends are. It is an active adventure story where many of the characters each have their own charms and strengths are aptly described. I forgot to include flaws for each character. I enjoyed Phoebe’s journey in the separate dimension called Lerch Hollow. It was a magical place. I think Phoebe had one talent that wasn’t really magical — it was kindness to others.
The Griffin's Egg is one of the best children adventure fantasy book I read this year. It is totally a hidden gem. I am not the fans of the cover. It is lack cheerful colors and adorable illustration to catching eyes of our younger readers.
The story itself is big surprise from the begining. It presenting intriguing fantasy world building behind the wild full with magnificent creatures and magics. The writing is good and enjoyable. I love the pace and all packed action scenes. The MC Phoebe is adorable, brave and very supportive. It is very easy to love her since the early page. The conflict and twist interesting enough for older reader.
Very promising story and I wish more adventures from Lerch Hollow and Phoebe.
Thank you to Netgalley and Wild Rose Press for providing a copy of this ebook. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was true. She loved to get lost in her own imaginary world, one with dragons and princesses and mermaids, because it was much easier than the real thing.
This is such a cute story. It's fast-paced, wholesome, and full of adventure. I particularly loved all the different types of creatures that take part in it. Even though the book is about two hundred pages long, the world-building is thorough, fully understandable, and perfect for the targeted audience. There are a lot of cool action scenes and even some fun plot twists.
Also, the characters are all adorable. Pheobe is such a brave and smart young girl. She is kind and sweet, and wants nothing more than to help all living creatures. She loves to live in her own little world rather than exist in the real one, which is honestly such a mood. Besides, she meets so many different characters during her journey. Unsurprisingly, my favorite one is the cat. Maven is such a hilarious, sassy character. She's exactly what real cats would be like if they could talk.
Moreover, while Pheobe does make a lot of friends in her short journey, not all of them begin as such. A lot of the friendships she forms begin with mistrust and animosity. Some are even her enemies. Nevertheless, friendships gradually blossom, adding a nice touch to the development of the characters. On that note, I appreciated the depth of all the characters, specifically, that of the villain. Lucinda may be the bad guy in the story, but her character is much more complex than that, something most children's books lack. She has a very compelling backstory that explains how she became a villain and even made me sympathize with her.
Regardless of how pleasant the story is, I initially found it a little hard to keep track of all the characters. There are quite a few characters in the story, as there should be. Nonetheless, they are introduced pretty quickly one after the other and I forgot who was whom at times. Other than that, this is a wonderful story and I think many children would enjoy it.
What an engaging tale. I really enjoyed The Griffin's Egg. Adventure, empathy, friendship. You can't go wrong with those three. Well done.
An imaginative trip into the realms of fantasy.
The Griffin's Egg focuses on the story of Phoebe Gray, the daughter of two wildlife biologists. Upon finding herself lost in a forest, she befriends a goblin who leads her into an adventure filled world called Lerch Hollow.
Phoebe quickly finds herself on a quest to reunite a griffin egg with its mother and right several wrongs along the way.
Standing between her and her goal is Lucinda, the Dark Mistress who uses griffin eggs to enhance her own power and use it for acts of evil. Lucinda and her minions set about derailing the plan Phoebe and her goblin friend, Gnish have made to keep the egg safe and Phoebe finds herself in grave danger many times, Luckily, she has a family heirloom with her which helps her on her way. Discovering she is a powerful witch by birthright, Phoebe still believes that magic will only take someone so far and that it is kindness and humanity that unite us and triumph over evil in the end.
This book is fast paced and full of action. It can jump a little and at the beginning, it jumps straight in as though some of the story has been edited out so it might confuse younger readers. We would recommend this book for our 10-12 year olds for this reason however some may find the storyline a little 'young' for them.
We noticed a Wizard of Oz vibe in this book so if you enjoy that you will likely appreciate The Griffin's Egg.
Thank you to Net Galley and Wild Rose Press for sending us this eBook for review consideration. All opinions are our own.
A wonderful tale I really enjoyed it. Target audience probably older children and teenagers. An enthralling tale of dragons and fantasy with family roped in. A lovely book. Thank you to # netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
I found this to be a very enjoyable read as it contained magic, mystery and some unexpected 'creatures'. I liked the character of Phoebe and her determination to solve the mystery which she found herself presented with. Throughout, the themes of friendship, resilience and determination shine through. It definitely feels like there could be more adventures for Phoebe and her collection of unlikely companions.
