This was such a cute book! The art was beautiful and it teaches kids about growing and the patience needed
This is such a sweet picture book where a young child's imagination/growth/passion is correlated with the growth of an avocado seed. As the avocado seed sprouts, the child flourishes as well. The story comes full circle in the end with the passing on of an avocado seed.
*There's facts about avocado growing at the end of the story. I had no idea how much water it takes to grow avocados.
The illustrations are beautiful!
Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi is a colourful, charming tale inspired by the author's own experience growing up in Israel.
Ellie is sulking. It is her birthday and, as she does every year, she stands under the avocado tree waiting to grow. When she does not, it is up to her father to explain that, like the avocado seed, the magic is inside, and she must wait to grow and flourish.
This is a lovely picture book full of earth-inspired illustrations that are sure to appeal to readers of all ages. It is a timeless and universal story that children will be asking to read again and again.
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for an ARC.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I loved how this book taught a young girl about growth through patience through the growing of an avocado.
First, what an amazing story about being patient and appreciating each step of our life with positive thinking and wishes of magic. Not in an unrealistic way, but in focusing on good things, and being kind. That kind of magic. The artwork is amazing, serene, full of warmth, feel-good vibes, and cozy. A great message, creating patient, loving understanding children into a loving supporting family. This book is like a warm hug. And now I am going to follow the instructions and make my tiny avocado grow slowly and it's ok, because even slow... it will flow.
What a lovely story! Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi is full of magic and inspiration for children who are impatient to grow up. Magic takes time!
It teaches that life takes time and as you grow up bit by bit, magic happens.
To grow an avocado is a great way to teach children about patience and to be mesmerize by the magic of growing up.
Thank you NetGalley and North South for inviting me to review this children’s book. The illustrations are beautiful and it’s a book that you could read over and over again.
This is a beautiful story that teaches that the magic of growing up happens slowly, that you shouldn't hurry it along and you should enjoy the journey . The artwork is lovely, vibrant and is perfect for this story.
Little Ellie is in a hurry to grow up. She learns that things unfold in their own time by witnessing an avocado seed’s
gradual, magical growth into an avocado tree, alongside her own growing up.
This is a sweet tale for little ones to follow along and learn from, highlighting the magic to be found in letting themselves grow up slowly in their own time. The lovely illustrations are provided by the author as well.
Thank you Taltal Levi, NorthSouth Books Inc., and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
I loved this sweet story about a young girl who learns that everything must unfold in its own time. The illustrations are lovely - brilliant and bold. Well done. This is a book I'd love to read to my little ones.
The illustrations in this book is what drew me in. Then it's a sweet story of a Ellie who wants to grow faster. Her dad shows her how to plant an avocado seed to teach her patience. Also to demonstrate that growth and magic are happening, but slowly. Then we follow Ellie as she grows along with the avocado tree.
A cute story about growing up, family, and the magic of story telling—how those stories that our parents tell us, stick with us through life. Simple, beautiful art providing a warm and earthy backdrop that perfectly accentuates the story.
Lovely.
Avocado Magic is a cute book about Ellie, who starts as a kindergartner, growing alongside her avocado seed. Her dad teachers her patience and how to care for her seed every day. She gets creative with some fun ideas to take care of the seed. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and I love how they flow between pages and as Ellie and the avocado seed grow. This story shows how the seed grows over time and Ellie grows up too.
Young readers will be engaged by this cute story and they will enjoy the little infographic at the end that shows how to sprout their own avocadoes.
I adored this lovely book about the magic of growing up and being patient with yourself. As well as waiting for your avocado to grow! It the illustrations are beautiful and add lots of details to the story.
I liked that this book comes with instructions on how to sprout and grow your own avocado seed.
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books, Inc. this ARC.
I was moved by this beautifully illustrated children’s book. Ellie has a birthday and is disappointed the next day that she isn’t taller. Instead her dad compares her to an avocado seed and together prepare one to be planted. The lesson is patience which she learns as it grows slowly. But the illustrations of her growing along with it and her taking it with her as a companion in life hit me emotionally. I see in other reviews of people reading it with their children. I instead thought of my almost 30 year old daughter who spends a few hours every week tending her plant babies. This is a lovely story and the illustrations caught me more than the words. It also includes directions on sprouting your own avocado. Thank you to NorthSouth Books for sending me the ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review.
This lovely children's book is about the magic of growing up and being patient with yourself (as well as one's avocado!). It is beautifully illustrated with lots of details to pick up on and also introduce young readers to broader cultures and faiths. I also loved that Ellie was a saxophone player... an instrument dear to my heart!
The book comes with instructions on how to sprout and grow your own avocado seed, and general avocado information lends to further reading on the avocado industry and global impacts on the environment for those interested in rabbit holes!
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books, Inc for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC of this title. A beautiful story of patience and love with lovely illustrations.
I would like to thank Taltal Levi, North South Books and Netgalley for providing an advanced readers copy in exchange of an honest review. Avocado Magic is a beautiful picture book filled with an amazing storyline and stunning art. Avocado Magic follows a little girl who is frustrated that although she’s getting older, she isn’t growing. Her father decides that to teach her that it takes a long time to grow he is going give her an avocado plant to take care of. This picture book flows nicely along with the art and is overall a great sweet and short story. It also has some great avocado growing instructions at the end so you too can grow your own magic avocado!
The day after her birthday, Ellie is shocked to discover that she isn't any bigger than yesterday. Her father understands what's going on and helps her plant an avocado seed. He tells her it's magic, but day after day, the little brown seed does nothing. Ellie is ready to give up, but if she can persevere, she'll see a magic she wasn't expecting.
A soft, cozy story. The conflict isn't all that compelling, but the text is gentle and the main concept very sweet. I really liked the ending.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
#Gifted I obtained this arc for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Sweet and endearing short story for children.
I love the strong and warm illustrations. The cover drew it to me.
Ellie is a likable and believable character.
The gentle rhythms and repetition are well done.
A great reading experience
This is a delightful story with a deeper message. When Ellie is disappointed that she has failed to grow at all, despite having just celebrated another birthday, her dad explains to her that Ellie is like an avocado seed - small, and full of the kind of magic that only shows itself gradually.
After her initial impatience, Ellie proves to be gentle and nurturing with her avocado seed. She sings and dances with it, talks to it, and plays music. And gradually, it does indeed begin to grow!
The growth of the avocado mirrors Ellie's own growing up, and when the time comes for her to move out, her tree goes with her.
This is a sweet story about how some things are best left to happen in their own time, and how the generational circle of life has a particular rhythm. Ellie eventually does the same activity with the avocado tree with her own son as her father did with her. And in due course, more birthdays are once again celebrated, alongside hers, under the avocado tree at the end of summer.
The illustrations go perfectly with the rhyming text in this adorable book, and I loved the instructions for growing your own avocado tree that are provided at the end! I give it 3.5 stars.
