This was an interesting story - the narration was a little robotic sounding and I almost turned away based on that. The narrator also tended to over-enunciate, which was somewhat annoying. People don't generally talk that way. Aside from that, the story was solid, well-paced, and interesting enough to keep me listening despite the clunky narration.

Struggled a bit with this one. I listened to the audio version of "The Wrong Family" by Ellery Kane. Had all of the makings of a great thriller, but was really drawn out. I found myself getting distracted in the middle part because I just couldn't see where this was going and the ending seemed so obvious. That being said, Kane did a good job at the end delivering a final punch that made it worth the listen!

This is the story of Hallie who is desperate to find her birth-father through a DNA test. She even writes letters to all potential candidates in the hope of finding out where she belongs to. And she is lucky! Even so, that she is not only introduced but also invited into her family!
But obviously this is not a happy ending at all! Strange things start to happen but now, she knows about her family there is no way back!

This is quite a fast paced story with plenty of twists and turns.
The narration by Madeline Pell was just to my taste!

The wrong family is a story where the main character Hallie is in search of her biological father. After getting results of DNA testing, she sent letter to all 10 people who shared the same name as her father. One of them responded and she went there to get to know this family. Now the important thing is by the title you know it's the wrong family. Secondly, she received a letter from her mother later that her father died in an accident. But she completely ignored it and hid it from the family. So, when the book describes her being trapped gives the wrong idea about what the story claims. I felt the summary itself mislead readers into the thrilling idea of her being stuck and how to escape when she could have gotten out of it easily.

I received this book from Net Galley and many thanks to the author and publisher of the book.

The Wrong Family started off slowly but picked up quite a bit. and ended up being a fairly entertaining read. It does not, however, have anything to do with being trapped as it states on the cover.

For the life of me I cannot understand why people do that, it is misleading and sets up expectations that are never met, leaving the reader a little confused. Not at any stage is Hallie trapped, indeed quite the opposite. Some of the characters in this story were really silly (looking at you, Nat), but for the most part well-drawn, and the plot was plausible although unlikely.

It is one of the more enjoyable thrillers I have read lately (although definitely not a psychological thriller as advertised). That's not to say it was my favorite or even close, but I enjoy Ellery Kane's books in general, albeit on the lighter side. I find that these days the same old tropes are being rehashed, and many thrillers are rather middle-of-the-road.

3 and a half stars.

I received this as an audiobook arc from NetGalley. I was very intrigued by the cover and the title of the book.
The Wrong Family is about a girl using a DNA test to try and find her father. Hallie grew up in foster care and is used to being alone, but she wants to find her birth father and meet him. She receives a letter that says she is matched to Robert. Robert is very excited about meeting her and invites her to come stay with him and his family. She accepts the invitation and tells little white lies about her history and culinary skills.
His two children are very skeptical of her and they all have secrets of their own. Hallie soon realizes that this family has a dark past. She begins to fit in and Robert lets her cook in the family restaurant. Natalie (his daughter) is very jealous of Hallie's relationship with her father.
This book started off a little slow for me, but gradually picked up and left you wanting to know more. I absolutely loved the way Ellery Kane ended this book. I am going to recommend we buy this book for my library. I know a lot of my patrons will love it!

A very well written thriller about a dysfunctional family, The story evolved around a family and a therapist and it moved between past and present.
The narrator was clear and concise and her voice changes were good.

The story unfolded beautifully. It was realistic, it kept the mystery/suspense on point, and the ending was perfect! Hallie Sherman is a likable character; she is resilient, and mature, and despite some poor decisions she made due to having a hard life, she is a good girl. I thought it was a nice touch to include the mail responses to Hallie from some of the Robert Thompsons that Hallie contacted. I recommend this book.

So it was only after finishing the book that I realized that the plot blurb is completely misleading. The turn of events as described NEVER HAPPENS. The story itself is fine, if difficult to believe. Hallie has never known her father; he took off long before she was born, and her mother had only bad things to say about him. After her mother's death in a car accident when Hallie's 9, she goes into the care system and starts searching for her bio dad as an adult. She sends hundreds of letters, and is finally rewarded with a message from a DNA search site which tells her there's been a match to her father. They meet up and he (apparently impulsively) invites her to his Lake Tahoe house, where he runs a successful restaurant, for two weeks. What luck, as Hallie desperately wants to be a chef but could only afford one semester at Culinary School!

There are SO many characters and interpersonal situations, I think to make for a bottomless well of red herrings. The number of "close relationships" and buckets of inside info that Hallie manages to get into in two weeks beggars belief; she manages to befriend a homeless man, quasi-steal her half-sister's love interest, discover some booze issues with her stepmother, become a head chef, and become a murder suspect during this time. It's ... a lot.

Ultimately, the book is just too stuffed with material that never becomes a resolved plot point {spoiler}(Natalie selling drugs in her cookie packages, anyone?){/spoiler} to be very successful, and Hallie's unreliability and unlikeableness make it hard to care where she ends up. 3 stars - the story propelled me, but the execution makes me irritated I stuck with it. Also, can someone please advise the voice actor that "salve" is not pronounced like it's spelled!

I wanted the family to be much more menacing, I wasn’t as afraid for her as I had hoped to be from the description.
Madeline Pell’s narration was very well done.
This one fell a bit flat for me because I wanted it to be grittier? I don’t know I just wanted more.
3 stars

I received this book from the publisher Dreamscape Select, Hachette UK – Bookouture for a fair and honest review.

I’m not sure if it was the narrator’s voice or the pace of the book. I did complete it, but it caused a major book slump for me. Hallie’s journey to find her father was interesting to me. However, the plot did not hold my interest at times. Although, I did not personally enjoy it, the plot twist caught me by surprise!

This was great on audio!

We meet Hallie who has been looking for her biological father through a family DNA test. She sent letters to potential matches. Finally she gets a response from her biological father and cannot believe it.

I can't give many details, but know this book takes you for a ride. Bizarre thing happen. People aren't who they appear. And you will question everything!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for an ALC in exchange for my honest review.

The summary provided is very misleading and I expected something vastly different than what I found the book to be, which was a disappointment to the least. This book simply wasn't for me. I did not like any of the characters and I found them to be very immature

Some of the plot points were absolutely ridiculous and almost made me DNF right then and there

I did like the narration though and only continued because of that

The Wrong Family by Ellery Kane. WOW!! This book was non stop action from the first page. How far would you go to find your family.. any of your family? This book explores different relationships along with so many twists and turns. I listened to this book in less than 2 days. Could not stop listening! LOVED this book!! Thanks NetGalley and Dreamscape for the ARC.

The Wrong family is a twisted psychological thriller, but is also a family drama about a very unhealthy unstable group of people. There isn’t a normal and or decent person in the entire family and yet I kept reading to find out who did what. The author wove an interesting, creepy, dark story that kept me guessing. I enjoyed the listen and the narration was fabulous.

I liked it! Hallie was desperate to find her biological father. The intrigue builds steadily as she strives to foster a relationship with him and her new family. But, she should’ve stayed true to her motto to never trust anyone. The old adages of β€˜careful what you wish for’ and β€˜things might not be as they seem’ definitely come into play. I thought the ending was a little disappointing. 3.5/5
I had the opportunity to listen to the audio version of The Wrong Family. Although I enjoyed how the story was written and how the intrigue developed, I found the narration, by Madeline Pell, a little choppy.
Thank You to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this this ARC.

It had me guessing until the very end!

Overall, a solid read! Highly recommend to fans of thrillers and suspense.

This book was twist after twist! The narrator was incredibly good at building suspense. The pacing was a little slow at first but quickly picked up pace to be a great read.

Wow! I did not see some of those twists coming! Hallie has been searching for her Father. After submitting her DNA to an ancestry company, she has finally found him! Upon meeting her father she is quickly swept up into his life and his world, but as mysterious events start to unfold, it becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems... Secrets, scandal, murder?

This was an excellent book and I am excited to get my hands on more by Ellery Kane. The narrator for the audiobook really helped bring this story to life and layered in the suspense.
