Another gripping case, very dark at times but thrilling nonetheless. It's amazing that the series still feels so fresh in the 20th outing and it's just as compelling as ever,

It is hard to believe that this is the twentieth book in the series featuring Detectives Jenna Alton and Dave Kane and it certainly did not disappoint. Jenna is left on her own when Dave is called away on a secret assignment. Jenna is out in the forest investigating some recently discovered graves when she is knocked into the river by a fallen tree branch and is swept down river. On reaching the shore she comes across a young woman who claims that she has escaped from a man who kidnapped her a few years ago and then buried her alive. But before they can get help the man appears and shoots the young woman dead, Jenna escapes and when she and her team begin to investigate they wonder whether it could be linked to the recently discovered graves. When they learn that another young girl has been kidnapped they realise that they have a race against time to stop another shooting. This is a gripping addition to the series, with so much action and suspense. There were also connections with the Beth Katz series which made it even more interesting. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture fir giving me the opportunity to read and review this book,

Where Hidden Souls Lie is yet another captivating addition to the Kane & Alton series by D.K. Hood. Jenna finds herself in a mysterious situation deep within the woods after an accident sends her into the river. Meanwhile, Kane is thrust into a covert mission from his past that he's unable to divulge to Jenna. Will he return in time to assist Jenna and the team in unraveling the brutal mystery she's stumbled upon?

With its fast-paced narrative, there's never a dull moment in this story. D.K. Hood masterfully weaves together suspense and intrigue in the 20th installment of the series, keeping readers on the edge of their seats throughout.

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review

Unfortunately, I was unable to download this book before it was archived and so am leaving this as a review/explanation as I didn't know what else to do after finding a few books I had managed to miss in a section of my account entitled Not Active: Archived, Not Downloaded; so I thought it best to clear it up. I have already bought a copy and will leave a review on places like Amazon, Goodreads, Waterstones, etc, once I've completed it and formed my thoughts on it. Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for the opportunity.

Boyohboyohboyohboy OH BOY! This was dark, intense and just harrowing and what made it even more perfect...chapter fifty! Epic!

I love this series, and I was meant to have read this last year but my reading was a slump and I couldn’t. So I read it as my first book of 2024 and it will stay with me!! Ouch, this hurt and packed a punch.

This was a dark storyline, a horrible one and it makes me want to hold the mini-me that bit tighter, I just hate the fact this happens. My heart just breaks.

What a story and a challenge for Jenna! How one slip, one fall and she discovers this god-awful event. She’s sucked in and bam.

I love little Tauri and it will be interesting to see how Jenna and Dave adapt, especially with a secret mission he went off to do. That phone call could cause a spanner in the works. Plus, I feel there is more to come with Tauri and his ancestry!! I mean it’s crying out to be talked and discovered!

I love this book, I loved taking my time and reading this book. I need to check in on Beth too once I have caught up as I fear things are getting interesting there too!

Completely knocked out of the park! What a way to start my reading year!!! Thank you, Ms. Hood!!

TRIGGER WARNING: child sexual exploitation and rape
Wanda wakes in a grave then escapes her captor into the woods. She meets Sheriff Jenna Alton who has been stranded in the forest but Jenna is unable to save her when the killer returns. Can Jenna prevent other young girls becoming the next victim?
Where Hidden Souls Lie is the 20th Kane and Alton book. Unfortunately I have missed the last couple of books in the series so events in their personal lives have moved on and I need to catch up!
The pair are separated by dangerous incidents in the first half of the book. Kane is called upon to help protect the US president when he spots an assassin he believed he had killed previously. Meanwhile Jenna is almost struck by ligntning and falls into the river. She makes it to shore but needs to use all her survival instincts to stay alive. Thankfully the pair reunite and race to investigate the murder of a woman who Jenna saw killed in the woods.
As always, the action and plot developments are fast paced and hugely dramatic. The personal lives of Jenna and Dave show their softer side and vulnerabilities which contrasts with their professional personas. The child sexual exploitation ring makes for difficult reading and the descriptions of injuries, murders and victims are quite graphic. There is a wonderful link with the Tarot Killer who is central to D.K. Hood's new series which begins with Dark Angel.
Where Hidden Souls Lie is a high energy, high drama thriller.

Another amazing book for this series! It is truly one of my favorites. I really enjoy how the plot is woven together using suspense, mystery and action. I love the characters and always look forward to learning more about them. I did slightly cheat on this one and bought the Audible version too (soooooo good). I cannot wait for the next adventure.

Where Hidden Souls Lie is the 20th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. This book can easily be enjoyed as part of the series or as a standalone mystery. I've only read the last few so far, even though I plan to finish reading the previous books soon.

This book was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat. I did not want to stop reading this book! I love the characters and I found the story to be absolutely captivating! This book was intense and I loved every minute of it!!!

What a heart pounding read!
The author's writing styling transports you to wilds of Black Rock Falls. I love how the characters continue to grow in both their personal and professional lives and it's always nice to see Jo and Ty lending a hand. There's even mention of Katz and Styles, which I thought was a nice tie in to her other series.
I can't wait to see what's next for the team.

This twentieth book is a great addition to this series
With lightning, survival and sniper theories.
The main case is one that Jenna accidentally discovers
Putting her life in danger along with some others.

Another enthralling read that grips from the start
With family, friends and others playing a part.
This time there's family dramas, too,
And hopes that an adoption will go through.

Such fascinating cases seeking more than one killer
Make this crime read a total chilling thriller.
It is the sort of story that has you riveted from the start
Turning the pages, engrossed in every part.

For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
Such an enthralling read and this is my honest review.

I’ve have really grown to love this series even though I have not read all the books (they really can be stand alones, but are even better when you get the persnal growth from book to book). This one advances the stakes for Alton and Kane as they are officially starting their family and investigating a kidnapper and killer. Well Jenna is while Dave is off on his own secret mission leaving Jenna in even more danger. without his backup With multiple arcs, I was drawn in from the start and could not put this one down. The frenzied pace and the increased personal connection for Alton kept me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the new characters and the tie into Hood’s other series, the Beth Katz series. I can see a hint where these two series might be heading.

I love that while I am learning more about both of these characters, I also do not truly know where they come from. I’m always amazed when the multiple arcs all converge at the end but still leave a thread for the next book in the series.

A great area, great characters, intriguing storylines and an increasing balance of personal and professional time keep me coming back for more. If you haven’t read this series, this is a great one to jump in and fall in love with this team.

As I have come to expect with this rather dark and fabulous series, Where Hidden Souls Lie kicks off with a chilling prologue, one that made my jaw drop in horror.

What ensues for the first half of the book is a split narrative between Jenna, Dave and the team. Dave’s off doing something top secret, Jenna’s trying to survive lost in the woods and the team are doing their damnedest to find the missing Sherriff. I loved the way Hood changed up the story telling. With each chapter telling me one of the three perspectives from the characters I’ve got to know over the past 19 books each working on a different case.

I have to say I love how Tauri has fitted so well into Jenna and Dave’s lives. It’s like he was made to be part of their family and has always been there even though I know he hasn’t. His innocence and insight is surprising but refreshing from one so young!

This has got to be one of the most chilling and horrifying cases for the crime fighters of Black Rock Falls to have faced. One buried deep in the forest. Hood really has hit the depths of chilling crime with this one. In the dark of this twisted tale, a smile did cross my face as there was a reference to Hood’s new series. If you love the Kane and Alton series, you really need to meet Beth Katz. Where Hidden Souls Lie is the perfect way to celebrate the 20th in this superb series.

Book 20 in the series and another cracker.

An action packed tense gripping page turner which sees Jenna and her team hunt a sadistic serial killer.

With every book you are teleported to the mountains and find yourself immersed in the lives of the black rock falls residents.

And so refreshing to have a happy ending.

Another well deserved five stars

Nice to have the two series being linked together.

Another book in the long list of this series. You begin with a girl waking up and getting herself out of a grave. You know from there where this book will take you. Along the way, Jenna and Dave are still waiting to see if they will be approved for the adopted and first foster parents. Along those lines, you find that these girls who have all gone missing have come from other places and also from foster homes. A really well-thought-out story that will continue to keep you going from the first page to the last. You are also introduced to a new character as well.

Where Hidden Souls Lie is book 20 in the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood and it is by far my favorite book in the series! The beginning of the book opens with a girl being buried alive and left for dead. She is very much alive and struggling to get out! The man that buried her in a shallow grave has done this many times before. There are other graves near this most recent one and there's a new one that isn't filled yet. A hiker finds a shallow grave and Sheriff Jenna Alton's team is contacted.

As Jenna and her team prepare to go deep into the woods where there's nothing else around, Dave Kane is contacted for a serious job relating to his past. Kane will have to go dark with no phone and contact with his current life. It's a dangerous mission and as Dave and Jenna know these missions mean that Dave may not come home. Dave and Jenna are married, work together, and are trying to adopt their foster son who's been with them for a bit. It's the worst time for Dave to be called away, but he doesn't get a choice in these matters as he is a man with a very particular set of skills.

As Jenna and her team locate the shallow graves, they're unearthing the bones to get identities on the victims. Some have been there quite a long time. A terrible accident occurs while in the woods and Jenna is fighting for her life. Luckily, she has her survival backpack on when it happens. Jenna's team doesn't know she's missing as she went off to look for other graves. How long will it take them to figure out she's gone? Its cold and light is fading. Jenna will have to use the survival skills that Dave has taught her or she won't survive the night.

While in the woods trying to dry her clothes by the fire and eat to keep her energy up, Jenna thinks she hears something. Dave has warned her about bears out here. Jenna is terrified, cold, and worried about how to get home. She's so deep in the woods that her team won't have any idea where to look for her. The team knows she's missing and have sent a helicopter up to search the area but the woods are very thick with trees. They're calling off the search until daylight for their own safety. They have tried to call Dave to let him know Jenna is missing, but he can't be reached.

The noise that Jenna heard is a girl named Wanda. Wanda dug herself out of the shallow grave and ran as far as she could. Jenna gave her some water, a brownie, and let her get warm by the fire. Wanda is terrified that the man who kidnapped her 4 years ago and then tried to bury her alive is after her. She tells Jenna they have to make a run for it. Jenna and Wanda pack up and go as far as they can in the moonlight. They eventually find a place to camp out under a big bush that provides protection. Later, they hear a horse coming and both are terrified. Jenna and Wanda are separated to stay hidden. It's the kidnapper and he wants Wanda back. He convinces Wanda to come out as he says she needs to train the new girl and if she cooperates he promises she'll see her family again.

Jenna is hidden, but close enough to see the back of the man. He has a baseball bat in his hand and he kills Wanda in a brutal fashion. Jenna makes a run for it as she's sure he'll try to kill her, too. The team is out looking but have had no luck at all. Will the team find Jenna before the kidnapper finds her? Will Jenna survive with her injuries suffered in the accident? No one can reach Dave when a body is discovered at the bottom of the river. The body has no face as someone bashed it in, but the hair is Jenna's color and the body size is similar. Could it be Jenna? Dave has to be notified, but no one knows where he is or how to reach him.

Meanwhile, another foster child has been reported as missing. Has the same man struck again? Is this his new girl that needed training? Will Jenna's team be able to find her before it's too late? Will Dave make it back from his mission uninjured and safe? Is the body in the morgue Jenna? Will the kidnapper be caught? Where Hidden Should Lie is the most intense book I've read this year! It has so much going on that it's hard to catch your breath. I was afraid to turn the pages at times as I didn't want to see one of my favorite characters dead. I rate Where Hidden Souls Lie 5 stars and give it my very highest recommendation! D.K. Hood has created a masterpiece with this book and you don't want to miss it! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Where Hidden Souls Lie in exchange for a fair review. #WhereHiddenSoulsLie

Bonus star alert ⭐️! This was absolutely unputdownable! One of my favourite reads this year. The characters are those we have come to adore and think of as family. The plot, oh my gosh the plot!!! It is spine tingling and bone chilling…. Literally. So suspenseful and twisty and turny. You have no idea what’s going to happen next but my goodness this store had some nightmare inducing moments.
An absolute must read. Stop what you are doing and read this book. Fantastically amazing!

As is my usual line, this is another excellent standalone thriller, but it is greatly enhanced by reading the whole series. You know by now; better backstory, context, and character development. I just love this series and Where Hidden Souls Lie is, in my humble opinion, the best of the lot.

Just as you have the family you have longed for, what will disturb you the most? Bones in a shallow grave? A kidnapped girl murdered in front of you? Another child abduction? While some might think any twenty book (so far) series hunting for serial killers would become a little stale, this proves them wrong. It’s as fast paced and original as book one. The descriptive writing about the area made it easy to visualise each scene. I love that! But, all those murders around that one beautiful backdrop of Montana. While I would be glad to have Jenna and David protecting us, there’s no way I would ever want to live there!

When, as we have throughout the whole series of books, you see a relationship turn from exclusively professional, to forming romantic feelings, and finally together and starting their own family, you can’t help but feel so happy for Jenna and David. They have become two of my favourite characters from any thriller series. There was even an Easter egg involving a new character from the author’s latest series.

I’ll say no more, other than I can’t recommend this any more. It’s a great example of skilled writing and storytelling. My usual caveat, read the whole series; it’s definitely worth it. I gave Where Hidden Souls Lie, by D. K. Hood, five stars, and cant wait for book twenty one.
