This one will go down as one of my favorite Kane and Alton books! It had tons of action and plot twists I didn't see coming. All the stars from me!

I had the privilege of an early read and I must say that I couldn't put this book down. It's my birthday, what a gift lol
How much crime can be in one area, it seems criminals flock together. Jenna falls into strife and along the way comes in contact with a young woman with memory loss. Her story as it comes to light is horrifying. Jenna is fleeing for her life and missing, meanwhile Kane is on a secret mission and has no idea.
What kind of sick people live in the surrounding woods? Where girls are just a commodity and thrown away.
I loved the appearance of this author's other series, I won't go into details but well I almost cheered.
We also have the back story of little Tauri and their imminent adoption of him, I can tell you I was in tears by the end of the story.
What a fantastic read, I loved every minute.

Buried alive! This is how this book opens up, so you know you are in for a ride. This one started off a little differently as Kane and Wolfe are called away for a special ops assignment which is highly classified. This means Kane is out of pocket when Jenna needs him most. When Jenna and her crew go out to the scene of what appears to be a burial site, Jenna has an accident. Jenna is in trouble and her life is in real danger. When she meets a young girl who has escaped from a little shop of horrors, Jenna's protective instinct kicks in. Unfortunately, Jenna witnesses an atrocity and she vows to make this predator pay, if she can find her way back home. There are some scary and tense moments for Jenna.

This book was full throttle from the first chapter until the last chapter, as the race is on to find a twisted and depraved killer who is living off the grid. If anyone can find this killer, this dream team of law enforcement personnel in Black Rock Falls can do it. This group of individuals are the best of the best hidden away in a little town called Black Rock Falls. They are intelligent, highly trained and come from all walks of life. We get a little peek into Kane's real persona in this book to see what he is capable of. This is book 20 in this series, and each book gets a little better. Sometimes series get dull and drab, but D. K. Hood has come up with a fantastic cast of characters that I feel as if I know personally, and I love to read about them. Each story is fresh and suspense-filled as lives are always on the line. When I start reading a Kane and Alton book, I know that I may as well plan nothing else for that day because I will get nothing done until I finish the book. If this is your first book in this series, you will fall in love with this cast of characters and you will be hooked. This subject matter was especially deep and tragic. It will give you the shivers to think that even though this is a fictional book, there are predators out there just like these characters. Whew... now I need nap!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another brilliant crime thriller in the Kane and Alton series.
With Tauri now with them, Jenna and Dave are just waiting for the formal adoption process to be completed. He connected with them straight away and he’s a perfect addition to the family.
Dave is called away with Wolfe and Jenna heads out to the forest to carry out an investigation. Whilst there she gets knocked into the fast flowing river and has to fight for her life.
Pulling herself to safety she then sees a woman who is clearly injured. Jenna tries to help her but it’s soon clear someone is hunting her down.
Jenna ends up back in the freezing cold river and prays the team are looking for her so they can rescue her.
A woman’s body is washed up and they all fear the worst but when they later find Jenna she’s determined to catch the woman’s killer.
This is a gripping crime thriller that will have you racing through the pages.
A brilliant read.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

When a shallow grave is discovered in the dark pine forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton rushes to investigate. After unearthing the old bones, Jenna scours the area for clues: and her heart beats wildly when she bumps into a teenage girl, breathless and covered in dirt. Wanda Beauchamp tells Jenna she was kidnapped from her foster home and buried alive. Taking in Wanda’s thin frame, Jenna knows the poor girl is close to death. She’ll do everything she can to save her, but they’re miles from anywhere and night is falling fast. When Wanda falls, the kidnapper makes his move and Jenna is powerless to stop him taking the young girl’s life. Escaping the same fate, she is wracked with guilt and vows to catch the ruthless killer and bring him to justice. Then another girl is reported missing from a foster home, Jenna and her deputy David Kane know they must act fast to save her.
The twentieth outing for Jenna & Dave & another edge of the seat thriller. The pace is fast, the characters are great & I found it hard to put down. There are numerous threads as well as twists & turns. It could be read on its own but I love how relationships have developed & changed throughout the series. Roll on book twenty one
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Detectives Kane and Alton Book 20 and what a ride it has been!
While out with her team Jenna falls into the river, when she makes her way out she stumbles on a potential killer. Can she survive and stop the killer before he takes more lives? A great addition to this series.

Kane and Alton are back! With a cracking story. That sees Jenna and Dave on the verge of adopting five-year-old Tauri. That's if they both live long enough to make the court date.

As Dave on a routine traffic stop comes face to face with a blast from the past and someone who should be dead. And he and Wolfe are immediately called away to deal with it.

And whilst the pair are out of range and contact Jenna becomes lost in Stanton Forest after a lightening strike sees her fall into the river and she barely survives. But her quick thinking and Dave's excessive training mean she's able to protect herself and escape the river before the rapids.

Yet, the danger for Jenna is far from over as there's a dangerous killer on the loose and Jenna is about to come face to face with them. When she stumbles across a young girl who has been left for dead, abused and beaten and who has a truly horrific story to tell.

But before Jenna's team can rescue her the killer strikes and Jenna barely survives and once she is rescued Jenna is determined to get this young girl justice.

However, to that she'll need to venture back where she came and when she learns another girl has gone missing she and the team know they have no choice but to risk returning to the forest and tracking this horrific killer down.

And with so many twists and turns. A heart pounding escape and confrontation. Not to mention a killer ending. This was another fantastic addition to the series, and I loved how it all came together. Furthermore, I can't wait to see where this series go next and if anyone gets close to working out who a certain killer is!

I'd happily recommend Where Hidden Souls Lie and the series as a whole to all.

Jenna falls into the river, the team and others are looking for her, except her husband, who is on a secret mission elsewhere. They presume she is dead, but are not giving up hope. Jenna, against all odds, survives the horrific event, but runs into another one. She meets young Wanda, who has escaped from the grave her "husband" had put her in.

It is time for another gruesome and despicable serial killer on the lose read. The book is both entertaining and gritty, as well as hauntingly addictive. I have no clue what is going on in D.K Hood's mind, if it were me writing this story, I would end up having nightmares. Something good happens in the book as well, so it is not all about catching the bad guys, or trying to escape them.

A great read, impossible to put down, and you do not want to miss out! Just read it!

I can always count on Hood to offer up a deliciously depraved mystery for Jenna and Kane to figure out.
It’s am exciting read from start to finish! Jenna goes missing, Kane disappears on a special op with Wolfe, and girls are buried deep in the recesses of the forest.
There’s also a joyful aspect because Jenna and Kane finally have the family they’ve always wanted.
I love how Hood does a crossover with her new series leader Beth Katz. She lurks through a few of the pages and leaves her calling card.
Can’t wait to return to Kane and his Stetson! Sigh!

For 19 books in this series we’ve had serial killers, in the serial killer capital of Black Rock Falls, food from Aunt Betty’s and the, often horrific, main plots solved by Kane, Alton et al. along with developments of the sub plots, the characters and information about the unique back stories of the main protagonists. All this and they are never stale, or samey, in fact all of them have been five star reads.
In this the 20th instalment things are different and early on, just when things are at the personal best they can be for Kane and Alton we see them separated by circumstances and both put in positions they may never return from.
Another brilliant, brilliant read, all the better for the change in direction and I loved the interaction with the Beth Katz series too.
As we leave these folks we’ve come to think of as friends, the only thing we can be sure of is their next adventure will be another thrilling one and I can’t wait to read it.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Where Hidden Souls Lie’, book 20 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

The day has arrived that Dave Kane has dreaded, a link to his past has materialised that he has to deal with. In his absence Jenna is in a forest investigating the discovery of old bones when she comes across a young woman called Wanda Beauchamp who has no memory of the last four years and is being tracked by her abductor. Jenna’s too late to save her life but she’s determined to track down the man who’s responsible for killing her.

Just as I feared I’d never get to see Black Rock Falls again, Ms Hood gives us ‘Where Hidden Souls Lie’ and I’m happy! This is another heart-stopping thriller with all my favourite characters and is so exciting I’ve been permanently attached to my Kindle, reading non-stop as I needed to know that Jenna was safe and the bad guys sorted. The final chapters are exceptional with thrills, spills, action and suspense plus a connection to the Tarot Killer, and the epilogue is so wonderful I had a tear in my eye. I hope this fantastic series never ends as it just gets better and better with each new book.

Sheriff Jenna Alton goes after men putting children up on the black market in this 20th installment. This was another amazing read that kept me glued to the pages. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released October 11, 2023!

Book 20 in the brilliant Kane and Alton series.

When a shallow grave is discovered in the dark pine forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton goes to investigate with Atohi and the new anthropologist Norrell. During a sudden lightning storm, a tree is hit and knocks Jenna into the fast flowing river. After nearly drowning she manages to get back to dry land. Drying off at the fire her heart beats wildly when a teenage girl, breathless and covered in dirt, stumbles out of a clearing. Wanda Beauchamp tells Jenna she was kidnapped from her foster home and buried alive. Could the kidnapper be linked to the shallow grave?

This book kept me reading way into the early hours. I was hooked from the first page til the very end. I love this series and can't wait to read the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of Where Hidden Souls Lie by DK Hood
I havent read the last couple of books in this series as I thought they had got a bit stale but WOW this is brilliant.
Grabs you from the beginning and the pace never lets up.
When Wanda wakes up she cant understand where she is. It’s pitch dark and there is soil all around her. She’s been buried alive. Determined to live she manages to escape the shallow grave. As she is escaping she crosses paths with Jenna who tries to get her to safety.
A great read you won’t want to put down.
All of the books are complete stories and can be read as standalone stories but as with all series it is best to read in order.

Book 20 of the series featuring Sheriff Jenna Kane and husband David Kane. Girls, mostly from foster families, are going missing in the area near to Black Rock Falls and immediately we are introduced to one of them. Wanda has escaped her abductor and is running for her life through Stanton Forest. Alongside the crime investigation Jenna and David are awaiting the result of the adoption hearing for Tauri who has lived with them for 4 years.

Briefly, David has been called away as part of his special forces duty and Jenna is called into the forest as a shallow grave has been found. Whilst investigating, lightning strikes and a branch hits Jenna throwing her into the fast flowing river. Whilst the sheriffs team search for her she manages to make landfall and coincidentally meets up with the running Wanda. Things turn murderous when the abductor catches up with them but Jenna manages to escape.

An addictive read with some gruesome and quite upsetting scenes. A number of different threads which all meet seamlessly at the end. I do love the characters in this book with some old friends and some new ones joining the team in this exciting and shocking thriller. Fast paced, full of suspense with a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Great read.

Life or death in the woods: good suspense🏞

Another good, thrilling adventure for Sheriff Jenna and Deputy Dave, the wife and husband police duo who are the central characters in this series. I thought this book was a bit of a deviation, with the focus more on Jenna and Dave than on a serial killer case to solve. Dave has his own adventure in Helena using his deadly sharpshooter skills against terrorists. And Jenna, wow, she's in major danger, alone and lost in the wilderness until she finds out that hungry bears are the least of her worries! Plus, both of them are anxious about their pending adoption of a four year old to complete their family.

Although Jenna does end up stumbling on a new case of abused and murdered young female victims during her foray in the woods, I sort of wished that case had taken up more of the story.

It's an exciting story and Jenna gets her chance to demonstrate her smarts, resourcefulness and strength. She's scared, cold and exhausted but never considers giving up. I love a story with a strong woman!

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Another great installment in the Kane & Alton series.
Jenna discovers a mystery going on deep in the woods after she falls into the river. Will she be rescued before something happens to her? As she waits to be rescued, she is determined to find out what is going on.
Kane is sent on a secret mission he can’t even tell Jenna about. Can he get back in time to help Jenna and the team solve this brutal mystery that Jenna uncovered?
So much going on within the story…..never a dull minute for sure.
Will Jenna’s and Kane’s personal life situation become what they are wishing for?
I highly recommend D.K. Hoods series as a must read!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, D.K. Hood, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Another fantastic read in one of my all time favorite series. I don't know how this far into the series the author is able to keep it fresh but I am continuously blown away. Reading this book is like catching up with friends. And there is A LOT going on in this one. Wow! I had to read it straight through. I couldn't put it down!

All I can say is - "Wow"! Jenna has to keep her wits about her as she battles the elements and a killer. Thanks to the training her and her team have received by Dave Kane, she has knowledge of what steps to take along the way. And when she goes missing, Dave has an idea of the direction Jenna will be heading. There are so many hold your breath moments, a side mission for Kane and Wolfe, great teamwork, and plenty of danger.
