I really enjoyed Dial A for Aunties, but was admittedly disappointed in the second book. I requested this based off of my love of the first book but I had to DNF this. The story has always been known for its' crazy anything could happen, soap opera feeling but I think making this into a series was too much. There should have just been one book, and left it at that!
I have loved all the Aunties books but this one I struggled a bit with. I'm not sure if it was the setting, the premise or what but it fell a bit flat. I finished it (and was happy for the ending) but I think of the three this was the weakest link.
3.75 Stars.
It's still funny, entertaining, and entirely ridiculous (though not as great as book one, which will remain peak) but I think it fell a little short in wrapping up the series as a whole.
I love how silly these books are, the aunties never fail to make me chuckle. And I loved that Nathan was more involved in this one, really cementing him as a member of the family. It’s so cute. It’s also chaotic, less mystery and more dangerous hijinks, and keeps the theme of under or overreacting… never anything in between or resembling rational, ha! Everything taking place in Jakarta, though, gave it a fresh perspective and heightened sense of peril. Loved it.
The wrap-up at the end, though, definitely fell short, especially since this is the last in the series. I was left with several questions that will remain unanswered and a yearning to see certain life events play out. I know that it risks jumping the shark to continue the antics with this family, but I also feel like there’s more to see and have.
I have yet to read a bad book by Jesse Q. Sutanto! That aunties are hilarious, I hope there are more books to come in this series!!
I didn’t realize this was a series and I didn’t read the other books before this but i still really enjoyed it. It took me a bit of time to get into it but eventually it flowed well. I will go and read the first books now!
Meddy and her husband Nathan have just landed in Jakarta after their honeymoon in Europe to spend an extended Chinese New Year with her extended family. When a gift intended for a business rival is given to the wrong person Meddy and the Aunties set off to set things right, but of course things don’t go as planned. Determined to rescue her loved ones, Meddy embarks on an impossible missing – but with her Aunties by her side, nothing is impossible.
This was such a fun conclusion to the series! I loved jumping back into the world with Meddy and her Aunties. This entire series has had me rolling in laughter from the start and this conclusion was no exception. The Aunties are just so funny, and it was a lot of fun to see Meddy herself in the role of Aunty. Are these books realistic? Absolutely not in the slightest. But are they a lot of fun? Absolutely yes, so much so. It takes a lot for me to like a cozy mystery, but this is the perfect recipe for me. Every time I read a book like this, I just wish I had a family as supporting and caring as Meddy’s, but also, they are a pain! I love the emotion that the author puts into her writing, it really helps bring all the characters to life.
If you loved the first two books in the series you will love this one, it has all the chaos as the first two. It is everything you would want, and more!
Thank you to the publisher Berkley Publishing, @berkleypub, and Netgalley @netgalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
You cannot read this book and not want to go back and read her other ones. She is hilariously funny on family, aunts, and a little bit of rekindle romance. After your world wind honeymoon and returning to celebrate Chinese New Year, what in the blazes can go wrong, everything and it's just what I expect from writer Jesso Q. Sulanto. I am always hand selling her books, it's just to good.
Jesse Q. Sutanto is one of my FAVORITE authors! Her books always have me laughing out loud! This was a great addition to this series!
The Good, The Bad, and the Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
The Aunties are back for a third madcap adventure. Meddy and Nathan are on their honeymoon after successfully getting married in Four Aunties and a Wedding. They join the family in Jakarta for Chinese New Year where the aunties are in fine form. Meddy’s mother won’t stop talking about grandchildren. During the party, Abi Lincoln shows up (having been invited by Fourth Auntie) to proclaim his love for Second Auntie. Unfortunately, while giving out the red packets (envelopes with money in them) to the children, an important document intended for another person is given to someone and Meddy and the Aunties must figure out who received it. When they visit the important business woman who it’s destined for, she decides to keep Nathan as collateral until they can retrieve it. Meddy and the Aunties go to great lengths to recover it and get Nathan back. Then, Second Auntie is kidnapped and the Aunties, Meddy and Nathan must go all out to get her back.
For those who love the Aunties, The Good, The Bad, and the Aunties will not disappoint. There were several times when I laughed out loud. For the craziness, I am glad they are not my relatives. For the loyalty, anyone would be lucky to have them. I give it four out of five stars.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this opportunity!
I love this series. With every book i fell in love with it. Jesse once again wrote an amazing novel in this series.
I loove the personalities and uniqueness of these aunties. They are freakin’ hilarious.
Definitely a good ending to the 'Aunty' series. This one had good pacing balanced with a fun plot. There were quite a few moments when I chuckled out loud.
I cannot get enough of Meddie and her eccentric family! Each book in the series has be laughing out loud and also suffering from secondhand embarrassment for Meddie!
This series is great for fans of Finlay Donovan!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC.
I feel like this book was only created to tie up a few loose ends and could have been a much shorter book. At one point, characters popped up in a room where they were never introduced in. The characters felt flat, the gaslighting was annoying, and it just felt meh.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free eARC of this book to read in exchange for my review!
This was super over-the-top and ridiculous and I loved every moment. What shenanigans will Meddy and her family get up to this time after the events Dial A For Aunties and Four Aunties And A Wedding? Spoiler alert: It involves lots of chaos.
Ngl the plot alone isn't fantastic and probably around 3 stars, but it's everything else that makes this such a beloved series for me and why I've always been a Jesse Sutanto stan.
❤️ The characters, their banter and squabbling
❤️ And how they would go to the ends of the earth for one another
❤️ Nathan is too good and precious for this world!
❤️ The family values, culture, pride and how it's all just so Asian #relatable
❤️ Every book of hers feels like a love letter to its setting and I loved the glimpse of Jakarta here
Overall, this was another hilarious and delightful installment. I have to admit I got a bit teary reading the acknowledgements because I'm SO not ready for this series to come to an end!
Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy of this book. Since I have not read any of the previous books in this series, I felt overwhelmed by the characters in the beginning. It took me some time to get a handle on the previous storylines & characters, but once I did, I enjoyed this book. It's lighthearted and funny.
I did not know that this was the conclusion to a series before requesting it, but this is still a chaos-filled, fun ride. We have Nathan and Meddy, who are just ending their honeymoon and are spending time with Meddy's extended family in Singapore. This leads to them being caught up with criminal families, investigations with meddling aunties, and racing around to stop these criminals. The names of the criminals and the over-the-top interactions were so funny. There was so much chaos and unrealistic things that’s happened especially with the aunties, that made me want to go and read the other books in the series for the interaction. Though this was a cozy mystery, there were still twists and turns, and I liked how the investigations turned out. The romance between Nathan and Meddy was also cute. I recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers who like unrealistic and fun plots. Thank you Berkley and Netgalley, for this arc for an honest review.
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties was a completely unnecessary addition to this series, and somehow even more unrealistic than the first two books. I was hoping for character development from Meddy, and a plot line that was different from the first 2 books, and I got neither. It really felt like Sutanto was dragging the story for the sake of making this series a trilogy. And just like in the first 2 books, the entire "problem" is solved within the last 2 chapters, which made it feel really rushed.
This series really should be marketed as YA and humour, opposed to as adult and mystery. I think it would be easier to hit the target audience this way, and in my opinion, marketing it as an adult mystery is misleading.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for the e-arc of The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties, in exchange for an honest review.
I always enjoy the ride, but the emotional stakes/tenor of the whole series careens all over the place in a really confusing way. This was the least stressful of the three books -- mainly because the core members of the family didn't actually do anything wrong this time -- and I loved the little details and humour. But it continued to be tonally dissonant.
The Aunties always make for a fun romp and this installment is no exception. It isn't as unexpected as the first book in the series but still full of over-the-top abundance and craziness. Meddy and Nathan are coming to the end of their lavish honeymoon and are in Singapore to spend Chinese New Year with Meddy's huge extended family. One of the traditions is to give red envelopes to all of the many children containing money or other paper gifts. A former love of one of the Aunties arrives with a basket of red envelopes and they are given out to all the children present not knowing that one of them contains a contract that is supposed to go to a business rival When the Aunties find the teenager who was given the contract, the troubles begin. The three rival big shots create all kinds of chaos over the contract and Meddy, Nathan, and the Aunties are in the middle of it all. This is a fun read if you want to be entertained. Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this for my honest opinion.
