Thank you to Berkley and PRH Audio for the copies to review.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and listening to this series, and while this finale was a little different than the other two, I loved how it all wrapped up. I love these aunties and their shenanigans, their traditions, their loyalties to family, including Meddy’s husband Nathan, and their culture. In this one, Meddy and Nathan have just wrapped up their honeymoon and they stop over to celebrate Chinese New Year with the family in Jakarta, and wouldn’t you know it, things go awry, and shenanigans ensue from here. This was a delight to read and I really am sad this series is over. If you haven’t read it or the series, you should pick it up, it is definitely a fun and entertaining read!
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties is the third series cozy mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto. Released 26th March 2024 by Berkley, it's 304 pages and is available in all formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a light and engaging cozy with a fun cast of eccentric and endearing characters. Although the mystery and resolution are self-contained in this volume, the returning characters have developed over the course of the series and there will be minor spoilers if read out of order. Additionally, this is the series ender, and all the book are so funny and well written, that readers should pick up all three in order.
The mystery is competently constructed, and a funny/scary comedy of errors, however by far the star of the book is the author's ability with characterization. The characters live and breathe and their motivations and behaviors are funny and believable.
The unabridged audiobook has a run time of 9 hours 23 minutes and is capably narrated by series narrator Risa Mei. She has a clear neutral alto voice and does a good job delineating the characters. Her pronunciation is precise and clear. Sound and production quality are high throughout the read.
Four stars. Recommended for fans of very light humorous cozy mysteries. It would make a good choice for public library acquisition, home use, or a binge/buddy read.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I think with this series I'm more excited to read this to see what the auntie's get up to instead of what the actual mystery is. It's the heroine and the secondary characters that really make this series worth reading.
A special thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for this advance copy of the final installment in the Aunties series in exchange for this honest review. The Good, the Bad and the Aunties is available for purchase today!
Unfortunately, this one was along the lines of the second one for me, in that they should’ve stopped while they were ahead with the first book and didn’t continue it. It’s the same banter with the aunties back and forth, the same outlandish plots with the same eye rolls from this reader. I know this author is coming out with a horror (or maybe it’s a thriller?) in the future, and that seems more my taste than this murder comedy thing we’ve got going on here.
Many thanks again to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
Sutanto always gives us a fantastic story! If anyone has the aunties, you'll understand. Get you the aunties that will not only get you into trouble but also get you out of it, all while having the adventure of a lifetime. (Maybe more than once.)
What a great way to finish off the Meddy Chan books! I’ll be honest, I kept waiting for the events of the first and second books to tie into this one, which didn’t exactly happen, but it was still hilarious and fun as always. I’m really going to miss Meddy and her aunties.
The final installment of the Aunties books was a fine wrap up to the series. It was fitting that they ended up back in the Aunties home country but I wish there could have been more plot-relevant interaction between Meddy and her other relatives. The whole book felt very short and very rushed (I think it takes place over 2 or 3 days?) and so I didn't feel as invested as I have in the past. There were just so many new names and characters that were introduced on a surface level but since they had nothing to do, I couldn't remember if this person was a cousin of Meddy's or an employee of one of the baddies or some other connection. I usually listen to the audiobooks and I missed hearing the proper pronunciation of the different languages. This just lacked a spark to keep me invested.
This series just makes me happy. It's one I look forward to every year. I want to somehow become a part of the family and have crazy aunties and a mother that say and do the most outlandish things and get me into an even bigger mess. I was laughing out loud multiple times during the madness that is Meddy's world. I'm so sad to see this series end. It was a fabulous one!
If you need light-hearted books that are filled with drama and murder (accidental most of the time), and a hilariously meddling family, this is your series! The other one I like to slightly compare it too that I also adore is Finlay Donovan...so snag these if you are a fan of that one as well!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Aunties are back and this time for the last..
Meddy and Nathan join her entire family for the Chinese New Year celebration. What should have been a peaceful event, unfortunately, turns into a life-threatening scenario when Meddy's family gets pulled in between business rivals. Along with her aunties, she should make a rescue plan to save all of them.
Tbh, the fun wasn't kicking in for the first half. I almost lost hope and then the fun began. There are new characters but still the aunties rock. It's a happy ending!
Thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for the advance copy. I enjoyed reading this book. The first in the series is hilarious and worth a read.
I had such a fantastic time reading this book! I've really fallen in love with this series, and this installment-which, according to the reader discussion page, is the final book in the series-was another wild romp of wild shenanigans, plots and plans, and hilarious moments!
One thing that I loved about the 2nd book was that Meddy realised that she was just like her family, coming to wild conclusions. But just because you know something about yourself, doesn't mean that it can't happen again. And they get pulled into this situation, and it was so good!
This whole case with gifts getting mixed up, and then ending up dealing with the different factions, not to mention some romantic entanglement, it was all wild and chaotic and so entertaining and hilarious to read, and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next!
I am really happy about where we left these characters. The way things wrapped up, it was really satisfying. It all came together really well, and I had a blast watching it all go down! But it is a little sad, that this is the last time we'll see these characters adventures for the first time.
This was a really fantastic series, and I am sad to say goodbye to these characters, but I can't wait to read more by Jesse Q. Sutanto!
I loved this series. This was a fantastic end to a fun series. I can't wait to see what else this author has to offer.
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto was a wonderful finale to the Aunties trilogy.
As with the first two books, I loved Meddy, Nathan and the Aunties. This book takes place in Jakarta as the they travel to celebrate Chinese New Year with their extended family. I thought it was fun to see them get into trouble in yet another location. This time around, the chaos is caused my Second Aunt and the rekindling of her teenage romance. However, her boyfriend is now part of the mafia and accidentally ends up getting Meddy, Nathan and the Aunties tangled up in a feud with his biggest rivals.
Overall, this was another solid book. The Aunties made me laugh out loud several times with their antics. I enjoyed how everything came together and that this was a satisfying conclusion to the series.
Absolutely obsessed with this series and this author. So sad to say goodbye to the Aunties and looking forward to whatever Sutanto brings out next.
I received an e-galley of The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties from Berkley Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties is the third book in this hilarious series by Jesse Q. Sutanto. The aunties are back again as they reunite in Jakarta for Chinese New Year. Meddy and her husband Nathan have been honeymooning in Asia and meet their family in their homeland for the New Year's. While there, Second Aunt's old flame and beau shows up with extravagant gifts to woo Second Aunt. Due to a mishap in the red envelopes handed out, Meddy and the Aunties are pulled into a longstanding feud between some of the most powerful families in Jakarta that may have gang affiliations. Meddy does not want Nathan to get involved in the chaos and crazy messes that her family keep finding themselves in, but when danger finds the family again, each member will have to do their part to make it out safely.
As always, the Aunties do not disappoint. Their responses to emergency situations are hilarious and full of spirit. The misadventures of this family are so fun to follow and despite all the arguing, the love and loyalty they have for each other shine through.
After a honeymoon across Europe, Meddy and Nathan join the Aunties and their extended family in Jakarta for Chinese New Year. Fourth Auntie has arranged for an old beau of Second Auntie to join their family celebration. Abi comes bearing gifts, lots of gifts. But one of these things is not like the others and was meant for a business rival. The Aunties all agree it is only right to return that gift to Abi. So, they start looking for it. Chaos ensues when the person who has it doesn't want to give it up.
The Aunties all have a time to shine, especially Fourth Aunt and First Aunt. They dominate the plans and follow through. Meddy has less to do until closer to the end. She and Nathan are mostly swept along in the chaos that is the Aunties. There is not much character growth, but we do get to see a more well rounded depiction of some of the characters.
The plot moves along fairly quickly once it gets going. Problems arise and the Aunties make plans to solve them. The plans often seem a little wild and complicated. You've got to suspend your disbelief, but then you can sit back and enjoy what happens.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. This is the third and final book of the series. I felt it was left open enough that if the author changes her mind she could easily revisit these characters. I have to say that I've really enjoyed reading about the Aunties and the chaos that seems to follow them. I also like the way they love one another and will band together whenever one of them is in trouble. If you enjoy humorous mysteries, this could be a good series for you. The Aunties will definitely keep you on your toes.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect my review.
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto was released March 26th, 2024 by Berkley.
3.5, rounded up. This is a fitting end to a joyfully goofy series; I'll miss the aunties and their madcap adventures. Some of the plot points feel ludicrous even for said silliness, but overall it's a good time. I also love the ending, though it makes me wish there were more books to come.
Oh these aunties! This final instalment in the Aunties trilogy was just as fun to read as the first two. I loved that we got to see a different side to the aunties - a more sentimental side - and that Nathan was included in the (mis)adventure with the aunties.
I felt like this book wrapped up quickly - and it felt like a quicker read than the previous two - but it was still a very enjoyable read and one I would recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for the electronic advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another crazy scenario this family gets into, but this is sort of what you expect at this point. The setting is nice and adds to the storyline, but the whole book also felt unnecessary?
It’s nice to see Nathan have a bigger role this time around, but the antics of Meddy’s Ma and aunties just felt a bit too much this book… overall, I did enjoy the nice close to the series.
I thought this was really well written and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I think it will find readers at our library, so we will definitely be purchasing for the collection.
