Etta and Gerard were great characters. Etta is not good at the normal things ladies are trained at. She has a loving forgiving nature and a natural aptitude for business. Gerard is a hard working, honest( except when he blackmails Etta) and an all around great guy. I enjoyed reading this book.
I lost a couple nights of sleep over this one. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!
Etta Stone has been in love with her neighbor Freddie for a long time. Unfortunately last season his mother and her own got into an argument that started a feud. She was no longer able to spend time with Freddie or his sister (her best friend). So she wrote him letters about her feelings. Letters he was never meant to see. When the letters get sent and she takes it upon herself to retrieve them a series of events take place that change the course of her future. I really enjoyed this one. It was witty and thoughtful. The characters conversations were natural and complete. I didn't feel like I was only getting small glimpses of the couple falling in love. I felt like a spectator of the entire thing. The conflict felt realistic and not contrived as well. I could have used some more spice at the end when the two leads get together but I'll take what I can get. It was very clean. I feel a young teenager could enjoy this novel safely. I would read it again.
I really enjoyed this proper romance by Julie Wright. I read it in 1 day. I would definitely recommend this to clean proper romance readers. The love story was so sweet.
First, I would like to thank NetGalley for this darling book!
Julie Wright filled this book with romance, humor, family, and all the finger brushing you could hope for in a romance novel.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Etta, as a character, was endearing and kind while Gerard provided the perfect compliment.
Each character was well crafted, and felt believable. I was very pleased with the depth of conversation between Gerard and Etta. Wright established their relationship in a way that was believable and extremely well paced.
The fact that Gerard in his childhood believed that a man couldn’t do better for a wife than a girl who climbed trees had me giggling and kicking my feet.
A fun read that provides exactly what you would want and expect from a historical romance.
Highly recommend!
When I read the blurb, the book sounded like a Regency twist to To All the Boys. I mean, letters to a boy you have feelings for that gets sent when they shouldn’t and then fake dating. So similar, right? This version was a bit slow for me, personally, which made it difficult for me to get into the story or really care all that much for the characters.
Etta Stone has been infatuated with neighbor Freddie Finch and has written letters to him that she has no intention of sending. The letters are just her way of resolving her crush. This would have all been well except that the letters were mailed and now she's just got to get them back. All was going well until she ran into Freddie's cousin Gerard as she was just about to recover all of them. Gerard blackmails her into helping him court her sister in exchange for the one letter she failed to get hold of. And thus begins the story of their romance.
This really was a cute and sweet romance. I like that Etta was an untypical woman of her time and yet she had so much to offer. Meanwhile Gerard was bearing some burdens mostly on his own. What Etta had to offer was really what Gerard needed and they eventually do get their happy ever after.
While I enjoyed this immensely, I did find the story was wrapped up almost too quickly once the main story was resolved. Not terrible but it could have elaborated just a bit more to provide a nicer finish.
Overall, I give this 3.5 stars and recommend it to all who enjoy sweet romances with strong characters, Thank you to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the advanced reader copy.. I have written this review voluntarily.
A historical romance with a blackmailing scheme gone wrong, plus fake dating? Sign me up!
Etta is in anticipation of her first London season while tending to her unrequited love of her friend Lucy's brother by writing him love letters. These letters were never meant to be sent, but when one ends up in the possession of his cousin Gerard, chaos and courting ensues.
Etta and Gerard will capture your heart and make you hope that they find their way to each other. The book was well paced and the intermingling drama throughout was a delight. Unlike a lot of historical romances, the main characters have all known each other their entire lives, which makes the speed of their affections less jarring. There is no spice in this romance, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not the place. What it does have is tenderness, care, and above all else, genuine understanding of the people they end up with.
I received an ARC of this book for review consideration but all opinions are my own.
This was so sweet. It was fun to read. Good characters and lots of different elements that held my interest. Each character had a role to play and was part of the bigger story. I loved that. Sometimes characters are just there to give the main characters someone to talk to. This was like stepping back to these two families and seeing a real story unfold. This would make a great movie. I loved how flawed everyone was. It was just a good read. Most regency's are just not holding my interest right now. They are too simplistic and I want a challenge or a good laugh. Basically I want to feel as I read and Wright does that for me.
Proper Romance with no religion. A kiss.
I enjoyed this regency romance by Julie Wright! When Marietta’s love letters to her neighbor Freddie Finch are accidentally sent, she will do anything to get them back before they are read…even if that means entering into a fake courtship with Freddie’s cousin Gerard. Gerard wants to get to know Marietta’s sister better because he needs her dowry to raise his estate from poverty. But he soon finds himself thinking more about Marietta than her sister. Will the rise soon become a reality?!
This story was fun and simple. I really enjoyed the relationship between Marietta and her sister Anne. I felt that a few of the other relationships in the book such as Marietta and her father were a little underdeveloped and I would have loved to see more there. Overall thought I felt that it was well written and is a story I would recommend to others.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
An Inconvenient Letter was a sweet and pleasing Regency romance. The storyline was predictable, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of seeing the romance develop between the hero and heroine. The side characters, too, were well presented and memorable. It was a light, easy read that I finished over two sittings, and I felt satisfied with the conclusion. All up, this is a book I would recommend to fans of Regency romance at the sweet-and-innocent end of the scale. I am giving it 4.5 stars.
This book was a delight. Inconvenient letters indeed! Etta fancies herself in love with Freddie and writes him love letters which she doesn't intend to send but alas they accidentally are mailed and so begins all the fun. Freddie's cousin, Gerard, discovers Ettas secret and uses this to be able to court her sister Anne. Etta and Gerard form a pact, which begins a journey of so much more! I recommend this delightful book.
Another first author to read, goodness I am choosing well on Netgalley! An Inconvenient Letter is a tale of blunders, misunderstandings and ultimately a happy ever after- my favourite kind of book.
Etta has grown up alongside her neighbours the Finches, their cousin Gerard also took part in their childhood games. Freddy Finch and his sister Lucy(Ettas best friend) made up the group. Etta always had a soft spot for Freddy, fast forward to adulthood and Etta writes love letters to Freddy with no intention that he ever receive them. When the letters are sent to his home accidentally Etta must try to retrieve them before he sees them. So far, so muddled- in the process Gerard discovers Etta trying to get the letters back and the muddle deepens. Gerard must marry money, Etta has an older sister Anne and he hits on a plan to marry Anne. If Etta aids him in winning Anne's hand then he will help Etta to attract Freddy.
This is a fun tale, told well. I really liked all of the characters including the not so nice ones, their personalities leap from the page, the author draws them so well they are entirely believable. A sweet, clean romance with good dialogue, it can be eaten in one sitting. Very satisfying. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC of An Inconvenient Letter.
A quick and easy read that still had substance, with likeable and well-developed characters. The book follows childhood friends, Gerard and Etta, who eventually enter into a romantic relationship. Initially she was pining for Frederick, which he didn't know because she only wrote her feelings down in letters - which wind up getting mailed. So, naturally, Etta, decides she must retrieve them from Frederick's house before he can read them, but she is caught by his cousin, Gerard. In an effort to have him not tell on her, she agrees to help Gerard court her sister Ann for his own personal reasons. But, of course, things rarely wrap up with a perfect bow. I liked this book a lot. It was funny and had a great, engaging plotline.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for this Arc in exchange for an honest review.
"The heart cannot help where it feels most at home."
A story of misunderstandings and mistakes is what you'll find within the pages of "An Inconvenient Letter."
Etta has fancied herself in love with Freddie Finch for years and has fueled it with a series of love letters that she has written to him as she's grown into a young woman but never planned to send. Yet when they mistakenly are sent to the object of her desires, she finds that he may not be the man she dreamed he was and her heart may be in danger of falling for someone else.
I really enjoyed this story! I especially loved Etta and watching her grow and develop over the course of the story. On the beginning, she is still holding into some of her childish fantasies, like her crush on her friend and neighbor’s brother. As the story progresses, you get to “watch” her mature and come to realize what she really wants and desires for her future. Etta writes “love” letters to the man she admires with no real intention on sending them. However, they mistakenly get sent and in order to get them back, she conspires with the young gentleman’s cousin, Gerard. Gerard is struggling. His father has run the family estate into the ground and now he is desperate for money to help keep it afloat. Although he really doesn’t want to marry for money, he sees an opportunity when he discovers Etta’s letter to his cousin. Knowing that she has an older sister with a size able dowery, he strikes a deal, she helps him gain the interest of her sister and he will help her gain the interest of his cousin. I highly recommend this book!!
This was slow moving for me. The characters seemed bland and one dimensional, but it was a quick, wholesome read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
A great story of unwanted help and surprises.
Sometimes the help you get is not at all what you wanted. Marietta, Etta, has had been in love with Frederick for years but he never even saw her. Over the time she had poured her heart out in a series of three letters, the latest being just as she was preparing for her first season. She knew there was no hope for their romance in part because of feud between their mothers. When her sister sees the letters, she thinks they are to be mailed as does so. When Etta finds out about the mistake she panics. If the letters are read, she will be ruined. There is only one hope, retrieve the letters from Frederick’s house before they can be opened. When she is caught collecting the letters by Frederick’s cousin Gerard, she is forced into helping Gerard court her sister Ann. In return, she will get the letter back and Gerard will try to interest Frederick in Ettie. But there is more help to come some good, but mostly bad, a missing letter, and uncertainty as all unfolds. A very enjoyable read. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.
This book was exactly what I hoped it would be— a sweet regency romance with a fun plot! It was a super quick read and so enjoyable!
I surprised myself by how much I ended up loving the main characters! They were both so likable! They were both really thoughtful and considerate of others feelings. They really did try to stay truthful in their charade which I also liked.
It did take me a little bit to truly connect with the characters and the story but once I did I really enjoyed the story!
Etta was wonderful! She acted so admirably in difficult situations. The thing I liked the most about her is the way she treated the difficult people in her life with grace and compassion. There was one situation in particular where I really admired her for how she reacted. While she could have understandably reacted with anger, she didn’t. Instead she showed grace. She wasn’t unrealistically perfect as she dealt with negative feelings and insecurities like we all do but she chose to be positive and kind despite those feelings.
I really liked Gerard as well! He was really thoughtful and kind. I loved how sweet he was to Etta and how he encouraged her to recognize her value. He was a great hero!
Gerard and Etta’s love story was so sweet! I love childhood friends to lovers and this one was so good. I loved watching their friendship grow to more. Their banter and conversations were so fun to read.💗
I love books that have anything to do with written letters which is one of the reasons I was eager to read this book. One letter in particular was beautiful and definitely reminded me of a letter one of Jane Austen’s heroes would write!💗
I also really enjoyed Etta and her older sister Anne’s sister relationship and how close they were. They reminded me a bit of Elizabeth and Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice which was really fun!
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book! It took me a bit to connect with the characters but once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed the story!
I loved the characters, the fun fake-courtship plot, and the Jane Austen vibes. If you like books that include:
•childhood friends-to-lovers
•fake courtship
•sisters relationship/sibling dynamics
•written love letters
•feuding families
•Jane Austen vibes
I think you will really like An Inconvenient Letter!

This was a good read, will scratch whatever regency romance itch you have. Nothing really to write home about, but still an okay read m
I really enjoyed this book. Loved the characters of Gerard and Etta. It is a sweet story and fun read.
