An Inconvenient Letter, by Julie Wright, introduces Marietta Stone on the opening page of this tale. This young woman has secretly been in love with Frederick Finch for years and she has poured out her heart on paper. However, when these letters are accidentally sent to Frederick’s home, all Marietta can think of is retrieving these items before they end up in the wrong person’s hands. Those hands end up being Frederick’s cousin, Gerald Hartwell. This gentleman man is looking for a way to financially save his late father’s estate and these letters look like the perfect opportunity. Gerald hopes to make some kind of bargain with Marietta!
You wonder what will happen when Gerald suddenly wants this pretend romance to be something very real. This is definitely a tale not to be missed!
I received this as an ARC. Thanks, NetGalley!
Maybe some spoilers ahead.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book! I'm a sucker for a sweet, innocent, Jane Austen-esque romance. And add fake dating? *Chefs kiss*. I liked that there were consequences to the characters' actions - that everything didn't just work out perfectly first try. Gerard was a gentleman and sweetheart, and Etta was a brave and smart heroine.
I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys period romance.
When Marietta Stone's love letter was accidentally mailed, she scrambles to get them back before it is too late. When the letter falls into the hands of someone unexpected, blackmail and lies ensue.
This book was such a fun light read and I really enjoyed the characters. It is a closed door historical romance with a great story line. I definitely recommend you give this book a read!
I love stories that have letters, so I knew I had to read this one. The premise is that Marietta writes letters to the man she admires, but has no intention of sending them. But her sister accidentally sends them, and she goes through many adventures trying to get them back.
I loved Marietta. She used her intelligence to help others, and she knows her own mind! And Gerard is such a sweetheart, who takes the burden of his family on his shoulders and just wants to support those he loves. I thoroughly enjoyed this story!
Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing, Julie Wright, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

This book got off to a slow start, but it picked up from there and then I started to enjoy it much more!
What a delightful story of a young lady smitten with her best friend’s brother, her affinity for writing unsent love notes that fall into the wrong hands, and the tangled web she weaves while trying to get exactly what she thinks she desires.
When Etta’s secret letters find there way to her unrequited love’s home, she takes drastic measures to retrieve them before her reputation is ruined. But a meddling relation stands in her way and she must endure a scheme to ensure the letter’s return.
While pretending affection for the cousin, she soon discovers her heart has betrayed her youthful pinings.
So enjoyed this sweet story! Etta was a breath of fresh air even though she was misguided at times. I empathized with her situation and applauded her tenacity and how she grew a backbone.
Gerard, who at first a little scoundrel for his scheme, quickly won my heart with his tenacity and hard work.
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
It seemed like a promising book at first. The banter was there and one could understand Marietta's frustrations with her mom but by chapter 8, it got boring. A fake dating trope in historical
romance is usually to die for. But Gerard and Etta failed to draw me in so l DNF'd the book. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved the entire concept of this book. The Regency Era romance was so well done with just the right amount of dramatics.
This was somewhat of a predictable storyline, but that made it no less enjoyable. The concept was great and well done, and the characters were likeable. Quirky and relatable.
Watching everyone’s relationships take form and bloom was satisfying and I loved the ending, everything turned out the way it should have.
I’ve heard great things about the rest of this author’s work so I will absolutely be checking it out!
Thank you to NetGalley, Shadow Mountain Publishing, and the author for this ARC.

3.25 stars. This is a cute, "sweet and clean" HR with Austen-esque qualities. The language and behavior are true to the period, and the writing style is fine. But although it's a quick, non-taxing read, it honestly just wasn't for me. The MFC is younger than the typical Regency heroine I usually like, the MMC is young and immature, and the plot is built mostly out of misunderstandings. There is some light humor along the way, but I found myself skimming through much of the storyline.
The main reason I didn't bump this up to 3.5 stars was MFC's mom. I found her to be self-centered and unreasonably nasty toward her daughter, without enough explanation. I had a feeling her dramatics were meant to be funny, but I was done with her in the first chapter.
There were a couple plot-points I was unsure of, but the wrap-up was charming and heartfelt.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary review. This book will be published March 5.
My thanks for the ARC goes to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing.

Wow! One letter sure caused a lot of trouble! This book is delightful from beginning to end.
I enjoyed the contrast between the sisters and the cousins. Etta is smart but not good at the womanly arts of embroidery, singing, or playing an instrument. And she's a disappointment to her mother. Mary is everything Etta isn't.
Fredrick is her long-time neighbor and childhood friend—he's wealthy, charming, and handsome. While is cousin, Gerard, should have been wealthy, but due to a situation out of his control, he's next to penniless. Gerard also played with Etta and Mary growing up.
I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this story.
And I highly recommend it!
Happy reading!
This book is written by a new to me author. I didn't know what to expect and found a sweet gem of a story. This is a Regency Era romance about a young woman who wrote a letter that wasn't intended to be mailed. Does the mayhem that ensue lead to love? Is it love for the intended in the letter or for someone else entirely? I recommend this book for anyone who loves a sweet closed door romance with an Austenesque feel to it.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Marietta has had a secret crush for one of her neighbors-Fredrick Finch, and put all her feelings in a few letters. She never intended to mail the letters, it was just a way to get her feelings out on paper. The letters accidentally get mailed, and Marietta is on a mission to retrieve them before they get read. Her plan backfires when a cousin of Fredrick intercepts one of the letters and refuses to give it to her. He wants her to convince her sister Anne into dating him. Etta finds herself in a predicament and names Gerard as her suitor. A book about healing relationships, forgiveness and friendship.
Imagine taking To All the Boys You’ve Loved Before and mixing it with Pride and Prejudice. If the outcome sounds like something you would enjoy, this book is for you!!
Etta has a secret. She’s in love. With the boy next door. Her best friend’s older brother. Whom she is forbidden to see. To be precise. To deal with the feelings of unrequited love she does what any lady of the era would do. She pours out her heart in writing. However she writes them in letters, which are accidentally mailed…by her sweet older sister.
In an attempt to get her letters back before they rich his hands she becomes entangled with their penniless and somewhat handsome cousin.
The dashing cousin agrees to release the letters back to Etta if she helps him court her older sister. In return he will do his best to make his cousin fall in love with her.
Naturally chaos ensues. With cutting remarks at dinner parties and society scandals this book was a great read with plenty of witty humor.
There was a touch too much miscommunication for me which made some parts of the book feel a little jarring. But on the whole this was a great, feel good, wholesome regency romance!
Also, why are regency men so dashing??? I think they are all Mr Darcy in my eyes haha!
The journeys of discovery that the characters take in this story are illuminating. Their shortcomings lead to growth over time. I appreciated the inclusion of small but rich details in the historical setting. I enjoyed the journey!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a sweet/clean Regency Era romance. If that is what you're looking for, this book won't disappoint. There's not a lot of side plots or other events to keep your attention.
I am a goner for a good letter related book. Overall I enjoyed the story. It isn't one that was griping or had me emotionally invested. But I was entertained for what it was.
At one point I did think that the main female character was being a bit childish, but then I had to remember that she was only 17, I think. There are a couple of swoon worthy events. There are also a couple of characters that I think needed a smack to the head.
Again overall, a pleasant enough read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Shadow Moutain Publishing for the advanced copy of the book. I'm happy to leave an honest review.
I think this is my favorite Julie Wright book. So far anyway. Fun story. I enjoy fake relationship stories and thought the set up for this one was pretty good. I liked the main characters and even enjoyed that there was a family feud although that isn't normally my thing. I loved the memories that Gerard & Etta had from their childhood escapades and that the friendship they shared then could carry into the present time.
I loved how supportive Gerard's mother was when he finally confessed to her. I did not enjoy his cousin very much but I suspect that we weren't really supposed to. And I liked that the characters could see the bright side of the "negative" situations. After all, true love came from the big mess they initially had.
I loved the sisters' relationship and their support of each other. I liked Etta's father, though we saw little of him. I did not like her mother. She was rather cruel toward Etta.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Violence: a little

An Inconvenient Letter by Julie Wright is a clean, sweet mixed-trope regency romance.
Marietta (Etta) takes to writing her feelings in the form of letters. There is never the intent to actually send them as that would be scandalous and ruin both her and her sister. There is already enough drama left over from the previous season (you’ll have to read to find out why…). But then, the unthinkable happens and Etta’s sister mails the letters. In a moment of pure panic, Etta shows up on the doorstep of her friend to retrieve her letters. The timing is perfect; friendships are restored and reunited, but not without creating new chaos first. At the root of it all, Etta is now being “pursued” by Gerard, her childhood playmate who needs to marry into money if he wants to save his estate. Together, Etta and Gerard come up with a plan that solves both of their problems. Of course, “a tangled web we weave when we deceive” plays out beautifully in this story. In so many great ways though. Again, there is conflict, but it leads to growth, character development, restoration of friendships and relationships, and several laugh out loud moments. I loved the slow burn romance and friendship that grew out of their time together. A highly enjoyable book that I happily recommend.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
I love stories when a character writes a letter to another character that they don't ever intend to send, and yet through unforeseen circumstances the letter is sent and the writer is thrust into chaos and panic mode trying to retrieve the letter or fix the faux pas.
Poor Marietta (Etta) finds herself in just such a circumstance. And what ensues is an adventure full of mistakes, friendship, struggles and love. I enjoyed how the author wove these characters together in this story. I enjoyed seeing their personalities emerge, especially when in a hard situation you tend to see the true character a lot more. I enjoyed seeing the backstory and reasoning behind certain aspects of this book. And I really loved the friendships in this book. They were wonderful!
There is a sweet romance that slowly builds. I loved seeing the development of that and how it all weaved together throughout the main story. The ending of the book was very satisfying and I'm hopeful that there might be a second book that features Etta's sister Anne. I'd love to see how her story ends.
Content: Clean.

Happy Reading!!!
What a sweet story! It begins with a little letter writing, some blackmail, and a bit of matchmaking, and ends with happiness!
This was just a clean, sweet read, a little in the predictable side, but no less enjoyable for that!

Etta Stone has been secretly writing letters confessing her love to her friend's brother, Frederick Finch. When her sister accidentally sends the letters, Etta must act quickly to intercept them. That's how she ends up making a deal with Gerard Hartwell, Frederick's cousin. As he holds one of her letters captive, Etta agrees to help him win her sister while he will help her win Frederick's attention. But when Gerard and Etta realize they have feelings for each other, all their plans go awry. Can these two find love thanks to Etta's inconvenient letter?
This is my second book by Julie Wright, and I rated this the same as her previous book. If you enjoyed Summerhaven by Tiffany Odekirk, then you might enjoy this as it has a lot of similarities. I liked Gerard and Etta and thought they had good chemistry. I also thought it was sweet how Gerard remembered things about Etta from their childhood and how he appreciated her intelligence and helpful spirit. Etta was very kind, even when others didn't deserve it, and she had a sweet relationship with her sister. The love triangle aspect of this is what caused problems for me. Gerard continued to pursue Etta's sister even when it was obvious that Etta was the better match. I also didn't care for Frederick and his immature personality. I can see how some will enjoy this story, but it just missed the mark a but for me.
