First of all: Thank you NetGalley for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Now: If you enjoyed Bridgerton, this book might be for you!
Miss Etta Stone knows her love for her neighbour Frederick Finch has no future, which is why she writes love letters to him in order to handle her emotions better. They had never been meant to be sent, but when they accidentally are, Etta finds herself in trouble. Luckily, Frederick’s cousin Gerard intercepts her letters and … blackmails her. Etta must help him court her wealthy sister, and he will give her the letters back and help her get close to Frederick. Of course she agrees, and they begin to pretend to be courting each other, to get close to their real person of interest. But what if they’ve already found the person they really wish to court?
Obviously, this book was very predictable, but that didn’t stop it from being adorable. This was a very easy book to read, despite the writing style that fit perfectly to the period in which the book plays: 1828. Other than that, the book was funny and had a hint of feminism, which I enjoyed. Normally I would’ve wished for more of it, but with this book it seemed realistic, considering it plays in the 19th century.
I genuinely liked Etta and Gerard as individual characters, but their chemistry was lost on me. They often referred to memories they had from their shared childhood, but it seemed to me that there weren’t many things they liked about each other at present.
The way they fell for each other was too sudden for my liking. I did enjoy their forced courting in the beginning, and I also liked it as they were both clear what and who they wanted, but the process of that realisation was too fast and sudden.
The side characters were enjoyable as well, as they added more depth to the story and the protagonists, although I’m not sure why Miss Bates had to be so awful. It was clear from the beginning that she wouldn’t pose a threat to Etta’s and Gerard’s courtship, so I’m not sure why Julie Wright decided to make her horrible. She could’ve been a perfectly fine human being, and still only be a friend instead of a love interest.
All in all, I’d recommend this book for fans of Bridgerton. The protagonists are funny and entertaining, but I would’ve wished for a clearer development of their feelings for each other.
A fun cozy book perfect for an autumn/ winter night with a cup of tea!
It was enjoyable to read the development of Marietta and Gerald’s relationship.
Would recommend for anyone who enjoys historical fiction and period romances !
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Oh how I love when a heroine needs to make her unrequited love jealous - let alone her being blackmailed into a fake relationship. Marietta Stone's love letters are accidentally mailed but *thankfully* intercepted. These letters pose a perfect solution to Gerard Hartwell need for a wealthy wide. Marietta will help Gerard to get close to her wealthy and eligible sister while Gerard keeps her letters secret and maybe helps her get close with her crush..... or maybe they'll find themselves getting close.....
I loved this book! A light read, it was perfect for the quiet evenings with a warm cup of tea. Marietta and Gerard were childhood friends, but Marietta has only ever had eyes for Frederick. She writes a letter to Frederick that he is never supposed to see, but when it is delivered accidentally and Gerard intercepts it, he proposes that the two act as a courting couple to meet mutual goals. But as the pretend courtship progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult for the pair to figure out where fiction ends and reality begins.
I loved watching Marietta and Gerard grow together and understand their feelings and the people around them. It was a sweet story and easy read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves period romances or historical fiction.

What fun, delicious read! I thought the premise of the book sounded delightful but the execution of the plot was beyond what I expected.
Filled with winsome characters and a delightful, slow burn romance this book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it
I had mixed feeling as I started reading this book, but came to love the story as the got on! the premise of this book is based on a young Lady; Marietta Stone, or Etta who harbors a feeling for Frederick Finch and has written love letters that are accidentally delivered to Frederick’s house which she must retrieve, and she takes help of
Gerard Hartwell, as they take each others help for mutual benefit.
From annoying relatives to overcoming personal struggles, this story is entertaining and endearing!
Thank you Netgallery for the ARC in return of an honest review!
As a girl I wrote love letters that I never sent. I wrote them and then tore them up so no one could read them. Because I did that I could relate to Etta who also wrote love letters to a childhood friend , Freddie but unfortunately instead of tearing them up she keeps them .
Her sister finds them and mails them.
That is where the drama unfolds as Etta goes to retrieve the letters before Freddie sees them and she is embarrassed for the rest of her life because he knows of her love.
When she goes to retrieve the letters she runs into a different childhood friend , Freddie’s cousin , Gerard. Gerard agrees to return the letters if she agrees to help him court her sister .
The story has alot of layers as two of the mothers already do not speak to each other . Etta tends to say the wrong thing at the wrong time . Both families do not want the two of them together .
What I love about this story is that Gerard remembers Etta not only with fondness but with exact memories . He seems to have always had fondness for her : more than either remembered . As he remembers and recollects more about his childhood he realizes that part of what made it so wonderful was Etta.
Money, drama , secrets , lies , love are all in this beautifully written book.
I couldn’t put the book down and . I will read it again.

Marietta (Etta) writes letters to Mr. Finch confessing her love - however, these letters are just a way for her to express herself and in no means are ever supposed to be mailed to or read by Mr. Finch. Etta’s sister Anne finds the letters and assumes her sister forgot to mail them. She sends them off without a second thought and Etta is left trying to retrieve them before they are delivered to Mr. Finch. While trying to steal them back, one letter falls into the hands of Mr. Hartwell (Mr. Finch’s cousin). Mr. Hartwell uses this to his advantage and convinces Etta to help him court Anne while he will help Etta more chances to interact with Mr. Finch. Amid many misunderstandings and mischief, Etta ends up telling Mr. Finch’s mother that Mr. Hartwell is courting her instead of her sister - the two enter a fake courtship under the pretense of helping each other with their reputation and potential love interests.
Overall, I found this book to be pleasantly enjoyable! I really liked how Etta and Mr. Hartwell started to realize their love for one another and how well their personalities meshed. My main complaint through this is that we did not get to see very much of them as a couple - the plot ended very soon after they confessed their love and there was not much substance afterwards. I would have liked to see a bit more of the two after they began their relationship.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain & NetGalley for this ARC!
I wrote a big long review for this book and then lost my work. Of course. So I'll try to remember my thoughts.
First, the proper romance series is always fantastic and I love Julie Wright.
It's hard to imagine a few little letters to be something so scandalous but I loved how is what brought Etta and Gerard together. It was rather clever. Etta was a really beautiful and generous person in nature and I loved how Gerard saw her worth and value as a person when so many others didn't.
The spilled drink incident with Miss Bates was very funny to me. Insanely clever and funny for the author to throw that in there. Plus a perfect opportunity to showcase what an amazing person Etta is.
The feud between the families was interesting. I hoped for more of a resolution but I can imagine it will enough for myself.
Overall a very enjoyable, sweet romance sure to leave you happier after reading than before you started.
Marietta wrote love letters to Freddie but never expected to have them sent. Unfortunately, the letters were sent by mistake and Marietta and her sister, Anne, went to Freddie’s house to retrieve them. Marietta got all of them but one which was taken by Freddie’s cousin, Gerard. He tells Marietta he will flirt with her so Freddie will want her for himself. Gerard is interested in Anne. It is important for Gerard to find a wife with a good dowry to help him save his family’s estate. If Marietta helps him win Anne over, he will give her the remaining letter. As Gerard and Marietta begin seeing each other, Gerard remembers all the times as children they were together and how fascinating she was. Her kindness, feistiness, and dare devil attitude kept coming up in his mind. He realizes he would like to court her for himself. I really liked the characters in this story. The self-centeredness in Freddie was a great contrast to the kindness of Gerard. Miss Bates was fun to watch as she tried to get Gerard for herself. I liked how Gerard worked to improve his estate because of his interest in those who worked for him. He realized Marietta would be a great help in restoring his estate. Great story.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishing company for giving me an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was very much looking forward to this story because I am a regency romance fan! However, I did struggle with this book. It may be the timing in which I am reading it or that it was a struggle to keep my attention. Either way this book took me a hot minute to complete. I will be giving it another attempt maybe in the spring because it definitely gives me spring vibes.
I enjoyed this story An Inconvenient Letter a lot! It's about a FML Etta, who accidentally sends love letters to her crush, Freddie, and Gerard, intercepts them. Fake dating ensues and we explore how they deal with all the hoops.
Julie Wright creates her cast of characters as relatable with realistic thoughts and flaws making them easy to find interesting. The romance was adorable, and the pacing was well-maintained throughout the story. Overall, I had a great time reading this book and recommend others to pick it up.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain & NetGalley for this ARC!
I loved this! This was a very sweet & engaging story. I'll have to read more Julie Wright books; I just loved her writing style. I was hoping at any point that Gerard would call Marietta beautiful (I really don't think he did LOL) but a wonderful book nonetheless!
Marietta Stone is in love with Frederick Finch, but believing a relationship impossible, satisfies herself with getting her feelings on paper, with no intention of sharing them. After a mishap, one of the letters ends up in the hands of Freddie’s cousin Gerard. Etta and Gerard agree to help one another gain the affections of other’s in exchange for keeping the letter secret.
What they don’t realize is that shared endeavors often lead to shared feelings. With open hearts and humility (and of course, misunderstanding along the way), Gerard and Etta find that often it’s the unplanned scenes of life that bring the greatest satisfaction.
A sweet, G-rated read. ❤️
I really enjoyed this story! The story follows Etta, who has a habit of writing love letters to her crush, her next door neighbor Freddie. She is horrified to discover that her letters are accidentally mailed, leaving her no choice but to attempt to retrieve them. Before she manages it, her letters are intercepted by Gerard, Freddie’s cousin and Etta’s childhood friend. Gerard makes some interesting demands in exchange for not exposing her letters, and fake-courting ensues.
I found Etta to be a wonderful character! She was kind, had realistic thoughts and flaws, and was easy to root for. The interpersonal relationships between Etta and her family (specifically her sister) and friends was a great addition to the story line for her character development as well. Gerard was equally kind, and seemed like a well rounded, hardworking character. I like that his plans for his estate were talked about often, as it showed his personality through his actions. The author did a great job creating realistic morals that drove each character’s choices, making them all that more believable. The evolution of the romance was super adorable as well, and felt nicely paced throughout the majority of the story. The ending did feel a bit drawn out with all the confusion going on, but it was definitely not a huge detriment to my enjoyment. Overall, I had a fun time reading this!
I found 'An Inconvenient Letter' to be an enjoyable read. While it took me a bit to connect with the characters, once I did, I was thoroughly immersed in the story. The book's strengths lie in its endearing characters, the delightful fake-courtship plot, and the charming Jane Austen vibes it exudes. If you're a fan of themes like childhood friends-to-lovers, fake courtships, sibling dynamics, written love letters, feuding families, and a touch of Jane Austen's magic, then 'An Inconvenient Letter' is a book I wholeheartedly recommend.
I just reviewed An Inconvenient Letter by Julie Wright. #AnInconvenientLetter
A huge thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Marietta Stone, for family just Etta, has been in love with Frederick Finch since very young age. She decides to put all of her emotions on paper to cope better with love that will never happen. Her letter is sent by accident. (Un)luckily Frederick is not the one who receives it. It is his cousin Gerard.
Gerard had known Etta since they were children and he always saw her as a friend. In the current situation, he proposes her a deal - she will help him to romance her sister and he will help her to attract the attention of his cousin and return her letter. Under rather unusual circumstances, Etta agrees to this. And that is where the real fun starts.
I absolutely loved this novel. It reminded me of Jane Austen books that I adore. Julie Wright has created two very likable main characters whose story was a delight to follow. In this book you will find a bit of confusion, annoying mothers, unexpected hobbies, some fun adventures and sweet moments. There are no unneeded descriptions and unnecessary events. The plot is easy to follow; the narrating style is simple and captivating.
This book offered me more than I expected. I laughed a lot, I sympathized with the characters and I was really satisfied with the way the plot was unfolding. I especially liked the dynamics of the main characters and the way they support each other and create a safe environment to be who they really are in front of each other.
I am genuinely very glad that I was among the first readers of this delightful story. Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the early release of this book.
I just love regency romance books. This was just the perfect little pick for me. This was light and airy and completely engaging. I didn't want the story to end.
I just reviewed An Inconvenient Letter by Julie Wright. #AnInconvenientLetter #NetGalley

DNF 40%. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is just not great storytelling. I wish it weren't the case! However, nothing has really happened beyond what the reader knew would happen and we're almost halfway through the book. The explanation of the feelings Etta has for Fredrick have been hashed over, now we are hashing over the supposed feeling Gerard and Etta have for each other. Throw in the matriarchal disputes and it's just too boring. I feel no spark to keep going at all.
Anybody who loves romance would want to read this. An Inconvenient Letter brought on the rekindling of friendship and the blossoming of love for Etta and Gerard. The journey they were in to discover this love was nothing short of chaotic but it was also sweet and full of revelation.
You can say that the ending of the fake-dating trope is inevitable. The couple would always end up together. Yes, that may be true but it’s the discovery of feelings that make this trope one of the best reads. That is exactly what An Inconvenient Letter is all about. You know how it will end but you’ll will still read through it anyway because it’s the journey that matters. Although this book won’t be out until March 2024, I tell you it will be worth the wait.
