I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This is a rhyming story about a child who desperately wishes to see his grandparents, but they live too far away for that to be feasible. So in order to show them that he's thinking about them and loves them, he mails them an origami heart.
In the age of FaceTime and Zoom, distance isn't as limiting as it was before. My youngest was born in Germany and didn't meet her grandparents in person until she was 3, and even that was a fairly short trip back to the states for the holidays. But she talked to some of her grandparents pretty much every day on FaceTime. She's 13 now, so we've had these options for a while. Not that sending physical letters and gifts is bad, but if you're wanting to see each other, you can do that without actual physical presence, so I'm kind of torn on this story.
The illustrations were very origami looking, which is fitting for a story about an origami heart. And there are instructions at the back of the book for how to make your own origami hearts. Overall I give Paper Wishes 3.0473 out of 5 stars.
An interesting read. Not one we'll read over and over again but we enjoyed it. Pictures were not as detailed as my kids usually enjoy.
A beautiful, rhyming book which is both heartwarming and important. Showing how a child stays in contact with his grandparents with his origami skills. Despite the distance between them, through a paper origami heart.
A wonderful book about long distance relationships, staying connected, families and love.
The book also comes with instructions at the end where readers can make their own origami paper heart.
A child is in the doldrums without contact with his grandparents, but knows what to do – create a simple token of love with his origami skills, and send it to them. But it's still got to get there… We get the directions to make our own similar item at the end, but the merits of this to me were the brief simplicity of the verse narrative, and the way he just has the need to do this – he's not being press-ganged into writing a letter or composing an email by well-intentioned parents. No, it's the lad's agency – and his ability with origami – that shines (a bit like the vivid red of his works in the visuals here). A healthy four stars.
When a child misses family far away, it imagines traveling to them as a paper heart - through the mail, on a train, a plane and a boat. Complete with directions on how to make the same paper heart featured in the book.
This was so cute. I shared with my mini readers and they loved it as well. The pictures were engaging and fun.

A story of love, long distance and finding solutions. With descriptions of creating your own origami to send to loved ones. A cross cultural book of families and staying connected.
This is a children’s book that explains how it’s okay to miss loved ones that you are far apart from and there are ways you can reach out to them to let them know you are thinking of them . The illustrations feature trains and deserts
This title is just not my cup of tea. A train with only red cars looping into and directly out of the desert? I know it's fiction, but why does the train may a U-turn instead of traveling across the desert? It seems the story is about missing someone, so sending them some origami love. Even little kids need more substance. It's a story. It needs more meat & potatoes.
This is a good book about how you might not be by a lived one or easily be able to get to them, but can send things to them so they know they are loved, missed, and thought of.
Cute storyline with a fun activity in the end. My 5 year old was confused as to why they weren’t together so it sparked conversation about relatives who are far away
"Paper Wishes" by Tara Knudson is a lovely book that shows how we can stay close to family and friends, even when we can't be with them in person. The story is about a child who uses origami to send their love to the people they miss. It's a sweet and comforting book that reminds us of the importance of love in keeping our connections strong.
Paper Wishes is an adorable book that is fun, easy to understand, and well illustrated! The illustrations fit the story well, and the overall feel of the book is positive and upbeat.
"Paper Wishes" illustrates the profound message that the bond with our loved ones transcends physical distance. Tara Knudson crafts a touching narrative, where a child's use of origami becomes a heartfelt means of staying connected to family and friends. The story resonates deeply with young readers, teaching them the power of love and creativity to bridge gaps. This comforting picture book is a must-read, offering a timeless message of togetherness. Highly recommended for its heartfelt storytelling!

Such a fun book on letter writing and the journey our mail takes. I loved that the book also had an origami lesson in the back. Such a cute touch to the story.
This is the cutest book. A boy makes a paper wish, and you can see all where he imagines where it would go. The illustrations are so cuteand the best part is that on the last page, it tells you how to make a paper wish!
This book has the sweetest message! I loved the use of the paper heart as a message, a great symbol for her love. I also lived far from family, and I think this book is a great way to help kids come to terms with that. It can be hard, but learning how you can still interact and connect with your relatives, or even friends, is so important. I also loved the illustrations and the colors used. Overall, a great picture book!
Thank you so much to Capstone/ Capstone Editions and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
A young boy misses his grandparents and dreams of how he could get to them, he creates papers and dreams he could travel to them. Then he sends them his love and wishes and waits and waits to know if they got it.
What a sweet and lovely story, missing people that are far away is hard and on children can be even more so, and this was a beautiful story on how dreaming of connecting and reaching out can feel
I loved the way it was written it was a beautiful poetry and it flowed so lovely, it was such a sweet story, of love, hope and dreams. I loved the use of the paper and how he created many different forms of transportation in his dreams of how he could get to them.
The illustrations were really lovely to see throughout and worked so stunningly with the writing. I also loved that at the end it shared how to make your very own paper heart like our character which is so sweet.
This is a wonderful and sweet story that I think is a great one for children to read, it shares about missing family that are far away but also shares how you can reach them still and still keep a connection. A very creative and beautifully told story.
This is a cute book for children who have family who live far away. When they are missing them it is a good book to read. I like that it had directions in the back so kids could make their own.
Paper Wishes is such a sweet book. My son is so excited to make his own heart to mail his grandparents after seeing the instructions at the end of the book. It was fun to see the travels of the mail. This is a simple, engaging story. Great for young readers.
