I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This is a story about a gloomy day when Mya and Addie are a little bored and decide to start a kindness booth to help their neighbors and brighten their day, because Mya's grandfather asked her how she could make the day brighter. But being a gloomy day, things didn't exactly go as planned and the booth got rained out. Then the neighbors rallied to return the favor and help brighten Mya and Addie's day.
I like the idea of this story, that doing nice things for others will help make their day better, because there is some truth to it. But this book definitely gives the impression that there's a 100% success rate from that tactic, and that's just not true. In spite of that, I'd still definitely be willing to read this book several times because if nothing else, it teaches children to be kind and we need more kindness in this world. The illustrations were bold and colorful.
Overall I give The Kindness Booth 4.1746 out of 5 stars.
A fun exploration of what it means to be part of a community and a great introduction to the concept of community service. I loved the message of this book and I appreciate the diversity! I have a lot of patrons that live in apartment communities and I don't see that represented very often in Easy Fiction. The artwork style is vibrant and eye-catching which makes it a great addition to a children's story time. 5 stars!
I loved this book. The idea of a kindness both works kind of like any other booth a service is offered and those interested come to get the service, except for with a twist. Three friends set up this booth to spread kindness and cheer. They learn that they helped all their neighbors and in return when they needed help their neighbors were there for them. This spreads an important message not only of treat others as you want to be treated but also the importance of community and being a good neighbor.
I love this! Mya is having a gloomy day and gets the idea to make everyone’s day brighter by building a Kindness Booth. She and her neighbor and little brother all join together to help everyone in their apartment complex out!
A bit heavy handed on the moralizing here. While the messaging is positive it's a little too perfect. Cute in a way that adults think children will enjoy and less in the way that actual children view the world.
Twee, cheesy, cloying, and bursting with just too much positivity even for its own good, this young read is still a prime choice, for all the unrealness of its situation and overt moralising. A girl sees the day ahead looks a glum one, weather-wise, so decides to get her kid brother and a friend to make a 'kindness stall', where they headquarter themselves in between doing each and every errand and filling the place of any missing friend that comes along. If it's not fixing up things for a wheelchair user's musical lesson, it's getting in goal for football practice, or modelling for art homework. But when the day gets even worse, climate-wise, and the stall has to be closed down, what on earth could happen next?
Yes, this of course is based on reality – we've all seen kids do this kind of thing, everywhere we look. But again, for all the over-done good intentions, this has to be appreciated for those intentions. It's no good trying to be scornful, scoffing and negative in the face of so much positivity. After all, if in some cockamamie world these shacks were to actually take off, who knows just how much better off we'd all be?
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are my own.
This is a wonderful story about Mya who is having a gloomy day. To make her day better and expert advice from grandpa she decides to start kindness booth with her little brother and Addie. It's an exploration of the effects of kindness and it's ripple effect. I enjoyed the book and recommend it
When Mya sees the grey skies, she thinks she and her brother Oliver (and friend Addie) have a plan to make the day better - a kindness booth. As they spend the day helping their neighbors (free!) they feel less gloomy. When it starts to rain, the kindness booth closes, but the kindness doesn't end.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book and its author.

The Kindness Booth by Laura Murray is a a great book for young readers to understand how being kind has the power to change your day and brighten your mood. In this book we meet Mya who decided one gloomy day to gather her friends together and make a kindness booth to help and show kindness to others who need it. I like the idea in this book that being kind not only brightens your day but other's as well. The quote "Kindness tends to spread" is one that stuck with me and will hopefully inspire and stick with young readers as well.
As a 2nd grade teacher and a parent, I love books that have a message or have a lesson to be learned. This message that kindness can have a big impact on yourself and others even if the kindness that you show is something very simple. I will be picking up this book to read to my class to emphasize the character trait of kindness and caring. I will also be reading it to my two daughters and coming up with ways we can show kindness in our neighborhood, at home, and in our community.
I like that the back of the book had 7 ideas on how to show kindness as well as some discussion question on thinking about kindness. As a teacher and a parent, I find this very helpful in facilitating conversations with our young readers on the topic of kindness.
Andrea Boatta illustrated beautifully inclusive and engaging pictures to go along with the words in this book. I love books with diversity since it matches my class and I want each of my students to "see themselves" in the books that we read. That helps them relate more to the book.
This book will be released on Jan. 1, 2024. Thank you to NetGalley and Author Laura K. Murray for allowing me to voluntarily read this book and give my honest review.
An adorable book full of heart and hope. I could read this over and over and each time, fall more in love with the characters and their actions
This is a sweet book about how we can change our mood and outlook by helping others.
Mya is feeling down and her grandad suggests she opens a kindness booth with the help of friends. She soon learns that sharing kindness with others is a quick way to feel good and lighten your mood
The Kindness Booth by Laura K. Murray reminds us that we can make every day brighter by sharing kindness.
On a cloudy and gloomy day, Mya is feeling particularly glum. But then her grandpa gives her an idea, she can make the day brighter herself. With her little brother in tow and the help of her friend Addie, the kids set up a kindness booth to share kindness around their neighbourhood. Helping out their neighbours and making their day a little brighter also fills the kid’s hearts with joy. And kindness comes a long way. In the end, when the kids need some cheering up, their favour is returned, and everything is brighter than before.
In dark times, we all have to remember that kindness, helping out and shining a light brings so much more to people’s hearts than anything else. If we all opened a kindness booth just once in a while, the world would be a better place.
This is a heart warming story about a group of children that decide to take a gloomy day and find ways to bring brightness to their neighbors.
As a 3rd grade teacher, I am always on the hunt for social emotional learning books...especially those focused on kindness.
Mya and her friends want to spread kindness by helping others. But their parade gets rained on and they worry they won't be able to complete their job. Thankfully, they have the support of all those they have helped along the way.
I LOVE the message of this book! It is simple, sweet, and kids can easily relate to it. The message kids can take away is that it is easy to bring joy and happiness to others. And, once a good deed has been done for them, they will pass that kindness on.
Thank you to Net Galley and Capstone Editions for the opportunity to read this lovely book!
What a sweet story about the power of showing kindness and helping others! I liked that the book demonstrated that doing kind things for other people not only makes them feel good, but can help you feel good as well. The illustrations were lovely, and I appreciated the short repeated sentences for my daughter who is just learning to read independently.
The Kindness Booth is a delightful book adorned with captivating illustrations that bring its heartwarming message to life. Through a simple yet powerful narrative, the book imparts a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and helpfulness. The storyline beautifully emphasizes the idea that being compassionate and lending a hand to others ultimately leads to positive returns. This makes The Kindness Booth an excellent choice for children, as it not only entertains with its engaging visuals but also serves as an effective tool for instilling important values. A heartening read that effortlessly combines entertainment and education for young minds.

We all need this book in our lives. It made me think I wanted to live in this neighborhood but it's up to us to make ours and our community the best version of ourselves. Helping others and returning the kindness.
