Nate and Stevie have a podcast called "All The Gory Details". When they were teens, Nate had a party at his parents' house which was attended and trashed by many many teenagers. A girl went missing and was later found dead in a farmhouse.
This murder was the subject of a podcast which was then slated by the public, because Stevie insisted 'it was the boyfriend'.
Now they have found a similar case of a girl disappearing, and they find her body in a farmhouse, posed exactly the same way as Lauren.
Soon, there is another murder similar to one that they covered in one of their podcasts. And then another.
It seems as though the person that murdered Lauren is on a spree, using their podcasts as inspiration.
I battled to get into this book initially, it seemed very slow. I am glad that I persevered. It turned out to be twisty, gory, and a page turner.
I suspected many of the characters in the book of murder, and was wrong, until I suspected one of the characters and turned out to be right.
I was sad that Nate's romantic love was not returned by Stevie, but realise that their connection was through a shared interest.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! Not too sure about that ending but what a book! Good book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, Action, intrigue, mystery, revenge, murder, serial killer, great who done it, great plot twist, and some crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me
I loved this! So very different, I'm not familiar with podcasting so it was completely new to me and I did take a while to settle in to their world. But the story, so cleverly plotted, Nate and Stevie, such great characters, well written and their relationship fascinating. Their True Crime podcast leads to copycat killers - or does it? I felt as clueless as the main characters, when I thought I had it nailed, an enormous twist side swiped me. The link between everything that is going on is the podcast, or is it? An old friend, Autumn, an ex boyfriend, Logan a DCI add layers and intrigue. In the end I wasn't surprised to find out the truth, it was about the only possibility remaining, but I was hooked by this story from the start and devoured every meaty piece of it. And I'm vegetarian. I actually said "Wow" at one point. Wonderful, addictive, tense and thrilling, I loved this story, even if the ending sat very uncomfortably with me, I would have preferred another, I can only hope...
Small Secrets is a cross between how friendships can go wrong and how podcasting can go wrong.
Stevie and Nate have been obsessed with the macabre. I’m talking All The Gory Details. Just like the name of their semi-successful podcast. Suddenly, Stevie and Nate are forced into the spotlight under harsh light for falsely accusing man in the murder of his girlfriend. When a similar case is brought to their attention, Stevie wants to solve it to make up for her past wrongdoings.
I enjoyed this book. I really fell in love with the characters. Stevie was empathetic and understanding perfectly matching with Nate’s charming and boastful personality. The cases discussed were interesting and unique. I also think this book did a good job at shining a light on the harm that crime obsession can do and not to take the podcasts, blogs and biopics for face value. It also provided an interesting take on the court of public opinion and how it can sway entire communities to believe something that isn’t true.
I rated this 3.5 stars. My criticisms are that the book was far too slow in the beginning, and the chapters are soooo long. It was difficult to get through in the first third of the book. I also feel the shifts in POV could be confusing as they aren’t labeled. I also feel like there were some loose ends that weren’t tied up, and I found myself wanting more at the end.
Overall, it’s a solid book. I would recommend this to fans of podcasts!
Before I read ‘Small Secrets’ I didn’t know anything about the author (but now I’m following her on her socials and will make sure I definitely buy this book once it’s out) and the first page immediately put me off. Yeah, it did.
I thought this book would be like ‘Murder in the family’ because the premise is somewhat similar but I couldn’t be more wrong. The first few pages put me off because the format seemed too dull to me. I was thinking if the rest of the book will be following this format, I might have to DNF. But I’m glad I was proven wrong.
Small Secrets is about two podcasters who goes back to solve an old murder case from their hometown. But that’s not the only thing that happens in the story.
As a true crime fan, I found the mention of different real life actual true crime cases very interesting. The whole aspect of the plot and how it digs into the true crime community really hit too close to home for me. I won’t spoil anything but there’s a lot of cases involved in here and you will definitely enjoy every bit of this book.
But the second best thing for me were the characters. I fell in love with Nate and Stevie. Although the story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you’re constantly bombarded with information that you have to process and come up with theories of your own. I doubted every single character but that didn’t stop me from falling in love with a few of them.
I loved that ending and it’ll be staying with me for a long time. Chapter one had me hooked. I finished this within 24 hours. I just couldn’t stop thinking about who the culprit was.
With that being said, I’ll definitely check out more of this author’s works in future. She’s made her way up to my favourite author’s list. ✨
(Good luck for the release! I hope everyone gets to see how amazing this book is)
