This was fine. It was compelling enough to want to finish but I had a lot of issues with the characters, plot and pacing.
So much internal dialogue was rinse, wash, repeat. It felt like it was never-ending.
Plus the third act break up was absolutely too much, unneeded and frankly annoying.
Not my favorite from this author.
I think this is my favorite of Falon Ballard's books so far! The writing is playful and fun. It's also from the perspective of a romcom writer, so she makes jokes about tropes or cliches in the genre that also apply to their relationship, which I almost always find fun.
Grayson and Emmy first met as teens starring in their first roles - Grayson went on to become a movie star and Emmy is a successful romcom writer. Circumstances force them together again starring in one of Emmy's romcoms. All their actions - slowly getting to know each other again, making quips here and there, eventually hooking up - felt very real. Usually I hate when characters hook up and insist it could never mean anything despite clearly caring for each other, but I felt like they really were learning to love each other in this case.
Don't read if you hate miscommunication tropes. For the most part this one was very fair but I wish Grayson validated Emmy's feelings more when he finds out she was hurt as kids and this time round. He can be mad at her for jumping to conclusions but also recognize that she overheard some mean stuff.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me check this book out sooner!
Finished in 1 day. Probably my favorite read of 2023!!
This book is an ARC I received on netgalley (thank you Netgalley, Falon Ballard and Penguin Random House for allowing me to read this book early!)
I loved Falon Ballard books, Just My Type and Love on Lease, so I had high expectations for this one! I’m happy to say that they were met and I was not disappointed.
It’s the perfect enemies to lovers / force proximity book. It’s a classic romance in the way that cheesey is inevitable, but it really wasn’t over done or unbearable! The plot was strong and one that kept you interested and then the romance was another great reason to keep reading 😏
The characters had real chemistry and the relationship didn’t feel rushed; which I love and enjoy. You also grow to love both Emmy and Grayson which makes the reading experience as enjoyable as it can get!
This was the book that got me to my 2023 reading goal and I’m happy I ended on such a high note!! Excited for everyone to get their hands on this one in Feb!
This book was such fun book to read! A romantic comedy that kept me in-tuned the whole book! I loved it and will be reading more of these!
Higher end of a three star for sure! It was really cute and I liked the vibes! The end felt a little rushed though and the miscommunication at the end was awfulllll, so unnecessary. Overall a quick paced, fun read with some spice!
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this romcom. This book has the perfect amount of sweet and funny moments in it. The tension was hot!
I really enjoyed this book overall - it truly has some of my favorite tropes and I am always a sucker for a romance novel based in Hollywood. It features Emmy, a screenwriter, who ends up starring in her next film across from her arch nemesis whom she believes ruined her acting career before it even really got started. I really enjoyed the tension between the characters overall and appreciated that it had depth without getting too dark.
It was truly such a joy to read and gives the butterflies you're hoping for when you read a romance novel. I think Falon's best work yet :)
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
I loved Falon Ballard’s first two books, and I couldn’t have been more excited to read this one!
The funny and fresh writing that I liked so much in her other books was just as present in this one. There’s pop culture references, the dialogue between characters is relatable, fun, and playful, and there’s a good balance between the serious and lighter moments. I also loved the side characters, their interactions with the MCs, and all that they did to help move the story along.
The chemistry between the two MCs was great. I liked the backstory they had, and being able to see the growth in both of them. The banter was flirty and sweet, and I kept wanting to read more to see what would happen next. I also really love seeing some more serious moments in a romcom, and I loved how supportive they were of each other when those moments came.
The *only* thing that bothered me was the miscommunication. It’s my least favorite trope so this is mostly just a me problem, but I wanted to shake the characters out of it. To be fair, there’s some backstory for why the characters react the way they do, so it’s not totally surprising, and I did like how the conflict was resolved. The rest of the story easily redeems the miscommunication for me.
This is a bingeable and fun romcom, and I already can’t wait for Ballard’s next!
I absolutely ate this up. I devoured it. And now that it’s over, I wish I was still in my little world with Emmy and Grayson.
Emmy Harper is an Oscar winning film writer who is being forced to star in her newest rom-com film, even when the only other film she’s acted in was a complete, humiliating flop. Even worse, she’s starring beside Grayson West - the same man who ruined her acting career all those years before. When the cameras start rolling, will Grayson and Emmy face the same issues they did before, or will they find there’s a different kind of tension bubbling between them?
All I can say is I really, really enjoyed this book. I loved all of the characters, I loved the dialogue, I loved the setting, I loved the plot, I loved it all. Of course the book was a bit predictable, but no one reads a romcom to be surprised. They read it to feel all the happy, warm, and comfy feelings. And that’s exactly what Right On Cue has done for me.
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam, Fallon Ballard, and NetGalley for the eARC!!
I ATE this book up!!
Oh my goodness - this was such a joy to read. I was hooked from the first chapter and devoured this. The second chance romance + enemies with benefits situation was perfection. The tension between Grayson and Emmy had me blushing and kicking my feet. Not to mention the spice was immaculate.
I also adored Emmy and Grayson on their own!! I loved the discussions of grief and all the many amazing side characters (like Emmy's mom and Liz). The cozy town where the story took place sounded lovely and I enjoyed the behind the scenes look at making/acting in a movie!!
Falon Ballard has so quickly become an auto-read author for me!
I enjoyed this book. The main character was relatable and the storyline was a little predictable but overall cute. I'd read more from this author in the future.
Right On Cue by Talon Ballard is the rom-com of 2024!
Emmy is a screenwriter and the only child of Hollywood royalty and she is taking on the big screen with her former co-star Greyson West which is meant to be a cute romantic comedy if only they could get along. Emmy and Greyson have such a fun bickering and bantering, the fighting and on-set antics. It reminded me of a classic movie that is always set in Hollywood but one thing I liked was seeing Emmy take the reigns in her career and transitioning to her new role and seeing women in the film industry take charge and make the cues. I also love how she doesn't take anything from Greyson and still holds that grudge.
I also thought it was interesting reading how despite being famous how it comes with many insecurities and instability. Greyson is more vulnerable and deep than he seems on surface level and what he lets the cameras see but the dynamic between Emmy and Grey shows that people make mistakes, we are flawed, sometimes driven by own our ego but we can choose to set that aside, grow and be a better person or be with who makes us want to be better and brings the best in us. I loved the drama, the third act break up, the way the story felt this could be a legit film as we read this. I had so much fun reading this story and I think anyone that is a fan of the hate to love, celebrity trope will love this!
Emmy is a romance screenwriter who has been cast as the lead in a movie she wrote, with the one man she can’t stand as the leading man. When filming begins, the tension between the two is obvious, and they are forced to get their acts together quickly - by any means possible - or risk shutting down the whole production.
This book was hard to put down and I found myself reading it cover to cover in one day! The characters of Emmy and Grayson were really well developed - from the details about their upbringings, to how their lives have changed since their first movie together - which made them very relatable. I found the details related to working on a Hollywood movie production really entertaining, and I have an appreciation for the level of detail that went into the premise of this story so much so that I was convinced that the author must have experience working in the film industry!
I enjoyed being along for the ride and rated this 5/5. Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Penguin Group Putnam & NetGalley for the ARC!
Right on Cue was an enemies to lovers romance on a movie set between two former co-stars, Emmy and Grayson. I had some trouble with this one, mostly because I didn’t think the characters made any real connection before falling hard in love with each other. Most of the interactions they had after they fell for each other were just them telling each other that they loved each other over and over. It felt a little inauthentic.
I loved the premise and was really hoping to love it, but I’m excited to read more by this author.
Thank you again for the ARC!
I really love Falon Ballard's romances! They are all so cute. They are easy reads and this one was as well. I loved the plot of this one.
This is the second book I've read from Falon Ballard, and I can't wait to get a physical copy of this. This a true hollywood romance book and enemies to lovers, which are my favorites. Such a cute story and definitely worth reading! Five stars !
I have been a fan of Falon Ballard since Lease on Love and Right on Cue doesn’t disappoint!
Right on Cue is a Hollywood romance (which I have a soft spot for) and features enemies to lovers. I loved the portions in which they were filming the movie. The romance was very strong, but I do wish there had been more background information on the characters’ past.
Overall, this was a great read, especially for the winter given the setting!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ From Publisher GP Putnam's Sons: Emmy Harper is no stranger to Hollywood, having penned some of the most popular movies of the past few years. But her latest project has hit a standstill—unable to find the perfect leading lady, Emmy’s been recruited to take on the role herself, dusting off acting skills she hasn’t used in over a decade.
Things take a turn for the worse when a she's left with the one costar she can’t trust: Grayson West. A blockbuster action hero known for his megawatt smile and impossible abs, Grayson is anyone’s dream of a romantic lead. Too bad Emmy still blames him for her disastrous first movie and the early end to her acting career.
The friction between the two risks tanking the movie, and no one knows if it’s lingering awkwardness from their youth or unresolved sexual tension. But if they want to save the production—and their own careers—they need to get their acts together quickly, both on and off camera.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️My review: I have now read all three of Ballard's books. She does a great rom com for sure. Like her first book Just My Type, we have a past-wrongs trope and two MCs who don't like each other. As usual there seems to be many times they could have smoothed things over if they actually, you know, conversed...but that's the story...slowish build up to the pay off.
We get a good view into Emmy's insecurities and desires and we are hoping for her to prevail. Her friendship with Liz is fun even though it's a little predictive that they randomly meet in college and both end ip award winning Hollywood types. (But I digress.).
Grayson is a jerk but of course we know that's not all there is to him.
As per rom com "enemies to lovers" trope we go back and forth with who the real "villain" is. Emmy learns a lot (she needed to).
I definitely enjoyed this book. Enough spiciness and the third act break up didn't take tooooooo long.
Thank you to NetGalley and GP Putnam Sons for an advance digital copy in exchange for my review.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC for Just My Type by Falon Ballard and loved it, so when I saw this was now available to request, call me double lucky!
Right on Cue has the same charm as Just My Type, except this is a smidge better because there is snow! I am a sucker for books with a Hallmark type vibe to them, with some spice added. I love that the main characters are not just creatives, but they also have a long, complicated history.
Emmy is the daughter of a famous Hollywood couple, who has since come into her own fame as a screenwriter. She has taken a break after a significant loss and is now ready to reappear. Queue the romcom of the century, with a twist. The twist is Grayson, an enemy of Emmy's from childhood when he seemingly humiliated her.
What transpires is realization that not everything is as it seems, there is more behind the facade of what people want you to see, and everyone is a bit broken in their own way. There is romance, a little spice, heartbreak, and healing...all mixed with snow and Hollywood glamour.
I loved a lot about this book, the setting, the characters, the plot. While the characters might have started off with some serious communication problems, the amount of healing Emmy and Grayson do for each other was the absolute perk of this book. They truly see each other, and that is magic.
This is the second book that I’ve read from this author, and I love this one just as much as the first. I think that it’s the cover that really brings me into reading her books and this one did not disappoint at all.
