Wow! I am so conflicted on my feelings towards this book! I have sat with it for about a week and I still haven't figured it out. On the one hand, I love this book. I loved the story. I loved the characters. I loved where things are heading. On the other hand, the thing that I feel conflicted on is the theme of sexual trauma and the further perpetration of that trauma.

We'll start with what I loved:

- I loved the romance in this book. This was enemies-to-lovers at it's finest! So many books claim to be enemies to lovers but then the characters instantly change their perspectives with no real development. But this was great! They remained enemies for most, if not all of the book. The stakes were high. The tension was there. They both tried to fight and deny their feelings. This element of the book with what made it so strong overall. I'm so excited to see what book 2 has in store for Rune and Gideon!
- The overall story. This was fast paced, tense, and intriguing. I was so hooked that I read this book in 2 days. I needed to know what was going to happen next and how things would unfold.
- The high stakes nature. I love when fantasy books kill off characters. It makes the threat seem real!
- The magic system. It as different and unique, something that is increasingly hard to do in fantasy reads.
- That ending! Holy smokes, I need book 2 and can't wait to see what happens next!

What I struggled with:

- As mentioned, there is a plot thread that I struggle with in this book. I struggle with the reality that one of the main characters, whose backstory shows he is a victim of rape, then uses sex as a weapon/tool (though not forcibly) against someone who he considers a potential enemy. While cognitively, I recognize that this is a reality. Victims of SA handle trauma and sexuality in a number of ways. And I also recognize that both characters willingly engaged in sex, actively wanted it, and that the inspection of the character's body was really a secondary motivation/an excuse the MMC needed to use to feel ok with sleeping with her. Still, something about this plot thread, how much emphasis there was throughout the book, the pressuring from his friend, just rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Maybe it was the lack of the MMC's cognizance of how, if he had found something damning, he would have been just as guilty of using sex as violence. As I read parts surrounding this theme, I had to actively rationalize through things with myself and examine my discomfort, which then took me out of the story.
- I also wanted to see both Gideon and Rune come to better terms with the world they live in. I'm assuming that will come in book 2, but I wanted Gideon to have at least some minor shred of compassion for the witches and I wanted Rune to realize some element of privilege that she had prior to the rebellion.

Overall, as mentioned several times, I feel so conflicted on this book. I loved so much about it but there were real and serious themes that I felt needed a little more gravitas or handled a little more delicately, though I don't know that it was enough to fully detract from the book for me. All that being said, I am a Fairyloot subscriber and do intend to get the special edition. So take that as you will....

What happens when a witch and witch hunter are attempting to woo each other in order to spy and find out information from each other?
Rune is a witch in disguise, she’s also a vigilante whose purpose is to save other witches from being purged by the ruthless witch hunters who goes by the persona of the Crimson Moth.
Gideon is one of those witch hunters, one of the most famous and ruthless, the one who brought down the monarchy of witches to begin with after being a slave for one of the queens. He has been hunting the Crimson Moth for two years and he has never gotten closer to finding the identity of this elusive witch.
After getting a tip from one of his informants, Gideon starts to suspect Rune of being involved with the Crimson Moth and comes up with a plan to court her to get close enough to find out her secrets. Rune is trying to find a witch that was recently captured and since Gideon is the captain, what better person to get close to in order to figure out how to break her out before she’s killed? But getting closer turns into something they never expected….

This was soooooo good!!! I’m so in love with their dynamic and the push and pull of it! I loved their chemistry together, I loved the angst, the deception, the feelings, everything about them. They’re both morally grey and loved the enemies to lovers theme. The magic in this was so cool and anything having to do with witches I’m always down for. The only thing I hated about reading this ARC is I’m going to have to wait for book 2 to come out even longer now!!! 4.75/5 stars

Enemies to lovers. If you like enemies to lovers read this book, enough said get it now or regret it later. There are little things in enemies to lovers I adore: the banter, the pining, the little nods of affection even in the midst of outrage; it's painfully addictive. This book gave me everything I could ask for and had me giggling. Gideon and Rune were both smart and matched each other perfectly.

In general in this book I loved the characters. It had well established background characters with dynamic backstories that have their own personal reasons and connections to the witches. I adored how the author, Kristen Ciccarelli, makes this world believable by talking about societal issues (either you are for witches or you are against), the talk of difference of classes, and making every person that she writes believable.

The magic system is unique, nothing too fancy, but understandable. I love how Ciccarelli allows the main character Rune to use her knowledge about the magic system in clever ways as well. Ciccarelli even organically adds more context about this magic system as we need it rather than forcing it all on us in the beginning where we can be left confused, the timing was masterful.

Oftentimes when it comes to books that I read that are fantasies I am very judgmental just because there are so many good fantasies out there, but this book took me for a loop and I truly loved it. Even with getting an advanced copy I know I will go out of my way to buy a physical copy just to say I have it on myself (it was that good). I am more than excited to read the next book in this new series.

Thank you to author Kristen Ciccarelli and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy of “Heartless Hunter” for an honest review.

💭 BOOK THOUGHTS: This book was gripping and fast paced, (although maybe a little too fast paced at times because all the action seems to take place over the course of just a few weeks). There was a good amount of unique world building. The plot was full of intrigue, hidden identities and good character development. I wanted to keep reading and it always kept me thinking/on my toes with the twists. The romance was full of tension, but it wasn’t too steamy so as to detract from the story. This one ends on a perfect cliffhanger that left me with grabby hands for the next book!

A thousand stars. Ten thousand stars. A billion stars in the shape of Rune, Gideon, and Alex.

It takes so much for me to rate a book five stars.

It takes characters who feel real. Who are motivated but flawed. Who I love so passionately I actually gasped when good or bad things happened to them. It takes Rune — who I want to be best friends with. Alex — who I want to protect. Gideon — who I want to storm the castle with.

It takes a fire cracker plot. Mix together my love of high society with the alluring mystery of witches and witch hunting and you get something I was unable to put down.

It takes twists I only saw coming right before they smashed into me like a train. Twists that have me running to reread scenes and pages over and over.

It takes a hell of a romance. In this book, two. Sweet and spicy. Light and dark. I honestly don’t even know which romantic lead I was rooting for most.

It takes stellar writing. Beautiful prose that didn’t weight down the action. Fight scenes that I couldn’t devour quick enough.

It takes an ending that leaves me desperately longing for the next chapter. It takes a conflict that isn’t one sided — both sides are right. Both are wrong.

This book is going to live in my mind rent free for a long long time.

A 4.5 from me.

Thank you to St. Martins Press and NetGalley for giving me an e-ARC in exchange for a review.

Oh man, I loved this. The last 20% of this book was a roller coaster whirlwind I was emotionally hanging onto for my life. There are some pretty wild twists and reveals that thinking back I should have definitely seen coming but it totally surprised me which makes me love it more. I was not expecting that ending at all. Kind of sad this is a series because I will have to wait ages to read book 2 seeing as the first isn’t officially released yet but I’m also excited there’s going to be more. There has to be more. Gideonnnnnn I’m rooting for you sir please don’t disappoint me!!

Jokes aside this was very fast paced and easy to fall into. It felt like I was watching a romcom through most of it but in the best way. It’s both MC’s making ridiculous choices that there’s no way can be successful but I love them both anyway. I’m glad this releases soon so my friends can get it so that I can relive reading it through their thoughts and theories.

Also, I loved the magic system in this.

I need book 2 now please!!!

This book is inspired by The Scarlet Pimpernel, which I absolutely love. It reminds me of Victoria Aveyard books, plot twist wise, and This Woven Kingdom (the first chapter has very little dialogue and the romance reminds me of that book as well).

This book has:
Best friend's brother romance
Gut wrenching plot twist
Bonkers ending that will have you anxiously waiting for book 2
True enemies to lovers
Rival brothers, love triangle light
Witch x Witch Hunter
Hard magic system powered by blood
Gaslamp fantasy
Other books this reminded me of: first two Throne of Glass books and Les Miserable

The romantic subplot was different and well done. I liked that the witch and witch hunter were both suspicious and trying to deceive each other. I feel like sometimes books like this just suddenly switch the witch hunter to becoming a sympathizer after k*lling countless witches with little to no foundation for the personality and mind shift. This book doesn't do that.

The first chapter was difficult to get through, but the story picked up quickly afterwards. The ending didn't make sense to me to a degree. It just upended so much at once that I was a bit shell shocked. I'm sure it'll be explained a little better in the next book. I am definitely looking forward to continuing this series!

Content Warning: explicit s*x, s*xual assault/r*pe victim, recovering alcoholic/substance abuser, manipulation, genocide, violence, blood, menstrual cycle blood

Wow! This book was amazing. The whole cat-and-mouse gaming happening between Ruen and Geidon was so intriguing. The magic in the book was easy to follow and kept the reader interested. The characters also had great depth to them that made the reader want to learn more about them as the story unfolded. Can't wait for the second book to come out!

To say I devoured this book is an understatement.

From beginning to end the twist and turns of this story are beautifully written and captivating. Rune and Gideon….the banter, the enemies to lovers to enemies…and that ending!!! I literally threw my kindle. Normally I am not a fan of duel POV but it definitely added to this story line.

A thank you to NetGalley for this ARC and now eagerly awaiting book 2. Will definitely be recommending this gem to others.

There's so much I can say about this book and the short version is that I need the sequel immediately. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book when I first started reading it, but by the third chapter, I was hooked and didn't want to put it down. I didn't catch the plot twist coming until I was over halfway through the book and it was so subtle at first and executed perfectly. I loved Rune's character and hated Gideon at first, though throughout the book, Ciccarelli slowly made me fall in love with him. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of enemies to lovers (and back to enemies).

4.5
This is actually one of my favorite reads of 2022 (when I originally read this arc). The characters are so complex and have so much potential and the plot is one that is refreshing amidst the fantasy genre. Overall, the conflict felt real and not one made to force the two together, as in numerous romance-fantasy, and the romance was done spectacularly, even despite the YA genre. I hope this gets the fame it deserves because it's rare to find something as new in the genre!

It's been awhile since I read a romantasy book that called out to me like this one, and I'm so grateful it did!

Rune is a witch playing the part of an upper-class shallow mannered lady with a low IQ. Hiding amongst the enemy in plain sight, she resides in a world where witch sympathizers are forever marked, and soldiers line the streets hunting down a witch renowned for her brutality and the evading of punishment. With her best friend assisting her in freeing tortured and imprisoned witches, Rune approaches his brother, the head of the guard, a ruthless witch hunter, and vies to seduce him in hopes of getting more information. Unfortunately, it seems Gideon is just as wary of Rune, and, with the same approach in mind, attempts to attract the seemlessly mindless young lady in hopes of learning whether or not she is in fact, the Crimson Moth, the ever elusive witch who has been gruesomely killing people in order to use their blood for banned, dark magic.

Pretty immediately I loved this book. We're set up with high stakes and character dynamics right off the board. Rune is driven and determined to save other witches who have been hunted down, and with her family dead and needing to hide from people who want her dead, her goals are survival and freeing other witches into safe dwellings. She plays the simpleton well, and her status and money allow her to hide in plain sight. Gideon and Rune have a dynamic I absolutely love where they're both out to seduce each other for their own means, and each is suspicious and a little bit afraid of the other. The world-building and magic system is easy to understand but solid in creating the world the characters live in. This book had me invested soo quickly! I read the whole been in less than 24 hours! It is mostly romance heavy, with magic and the hunter-hunted themes in the background. Absolutely loved!

This book hits all the themes, character dynamics, and tropes I want in a romantasy book. I haven't felt drawn to a witchy book in a while, but the soft magic is enticing and the harsh world the characters live in reminds me a bit of  Six of Crows, which I know will immediately attract more readers! I'm really loving the charm of the romance and the high stakes, I'm so excited to read more of this series and will definitely look forward to more of the author as well!

I was pulled into the story of Rune and Gideon from the first page. I’m obsessed with Rune and the facade she had on, the way she outfoxed Gideon so often. The depth of their characters was really well done, with Gideon feeling so justified in his hatred for witches because of what he experienced at their hands, and Rune heartbroken she couldn’t save them all, fueled by guilt over her grandmothers death. Those peeks we got into their minds and the way they had started to understand each other near the end. I did kind of see the plot twist at the end coming, but I’m very excited for the next book and hopefully some bloody, very justified revenge. On both the hunters and a certain witch. Highly recommend.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. martin's Press for the ARC. Our main character Rune is a witch and she lives in a time of witch-hunters. During the day she is a socialite but a night she is the Crimson Moth. Rune wants to save all witches from death, but she has to get close to the witch hunter in charge. This is a first book in a duology and I can not wait for book 2.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. It was a great romantic fantasy! Set in a world where witches are hunted and magic is waning, the story follows Rune, a powerful witch who must hide her true identity in order to survive. But when a rescue mission goes wrong, Rune must take drastic measures to save her kind and gain valuable information.
The character of Rune is complex and intriguing. As the Crimson Moth, she is a fearless and skilled vigilante who risks her own safety to save others. But as a socialite, she is forced to play a different role and hide her true nature. This duality adds depth to her character and makes her all the more relatable.
The chemistry between Rune and Gideon, the handsome witch hunter, is palpable from the start. Despite their opposing beliefs, they are drawn to each other, making for an intense and passionate romance. Gideon's loyalty to the revolution and his duty as a witch hunter is constantly tested as he gets to know Rune and begins to question everything he thought he knew. The world-building is expertly done, with a perfect balance of magic and political intrigue and its also rich with detail which makes it captivating to read until the end. I highly recommend to fans of fantasy romance.

I ended up reading about 40% of the book before ultimately deciding that I wasn’t going to finish it, and would be DNFing it. I gave the book a three star rating as opposed to a two because the writing itself wasn’t terrible and clearly the author did put a lot of effort into world building… However, that said, the problem for me was that there was not a good balance of plot versus those world building details.

From the start of the book, a new character and/or place is seemingly introduced every other page… Making it difficult to keep track of who and what was relevant to the story, as well as what interactions miscellaneous side characters had with the main character (Rune) were important. As a result of that, it was difficult not to be completely apathetic towards every single character. I wasn’t invested in learning about them or following them through the storyline, because I was instead taking annotations in my best attempt to follow along with who-is-who.

So much of Heartless Hunter is spent on world building that very little of it is actually about anything happening to the characters that at 40% in, you still feel like you’re reading a prologue... Which is why, I decided to set this book aside. The concept and summary genuinely sounded appealing, but this far in it wasn’t enough to make it worthwhile to try and stick around to see if the story picked up at all in the later half of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for review!

Wow!! What a thrilling ride!

Mark my words, this will be a favorite for 2024! Heartless Hunter will have you hooked from page one and staying up late into the night whispering "Just one more chapter". This was everything you could want from a YA romantasy!

Heartless Hunter was definitely a character-driven story and these characters are MESSY. I mean that in the best way! Rune and Gideon both think they're the cat in a game of cat and mouse. Rune's life turned upside down when the witches in power were overthrown. She's now doing her best to keep other witches from meeting their end without leaving traces of her magic. Gideon is her best friend's brother and the Captain of the Guard. He was a key player in the revolution and is currently responsible for sniffing out witches and arresting them. These two go toe to toe to attempt to get the information each one needs but find they might be in over their head. Sprinkle in a bit of a love triangle, ugh my heart.

We get a dual POV and that was a perfect choice to watch this story unfold. You realize some of the traps each one has set up for the other but you still get surprises and twists. There were moments where I was just like "oh no, you are done you big dumdum!" but just wait. Each POV felt important for the story and I felt like I had a really good grasp on who each character was.

Gideon and Rune both are dealing with trauma in real time for very different reasons. There really hasn't been much time that's passed since the fall of power and you're watching this power structure go from leaning from one extreme to the other and no one seems right. Ciccarelli has built an interesting world and magic system but has left it simple enough that it isn't overpowering the other aspects of this romantasy. The pace was engaging, the writing was coherent and the twists were satisfying.

One thing that I felt could have been fleshed out more is that we are told that Rune has been successful in her missions but we aren't really shown The Crimson Moth being slick enough to pull all of this off. The one time we are on a mission with her, I couldn't help but thinking "wow, you're both walnuts" and wondering how she's gotten this far. While Rune has to keep up the appearance of a vapid party girl, I think her character might have suffered a bit by not having *something* else going on in her day-to-day life. I'm not sure what that could have been but it just felt like there was a gap that needed to be filled.

This actually ended up being pretty steamy for YA so I would put it at the higher end of the spectrum. I'm not sure if it's because I'm 31 and reading YA so my perception is skewed but there were a few moments of dialogue in the beginning that came off as a bit juvenile but this didn't really happen again once the story got moving so I do think adults who still enjoy YA will like this.

All in all, this story felt fun, dangerous, and FRESH! There was a simplicity to Heartless Hunter but it was original and didn't try too hard to work in popular tropes and trending themes that often leave a plot a mess of confusion. I'm really on the edge of my seat wondering how we're going to get to a happy ending after how this wrapped up. I cannot wait for book two!

PS. I require emotional compensation for what happened there at the end. Yeah, you know the thing.

Book: Heartless Hunter

I would like to thank the publisher, Wednesday Books, for sending me an ARC. I am going to be honest. This is one of my anticipated reads of 2024, so I was very happy to have the chance to read it early. I’m glad I did. While this may not add anything new, I had a great time with it.

In this one, we follow Rune and Gideon, who live in on an island. Witches once ruled this island. A revolution happened and now being a witch is illegal. The Blood Guard, of which Gideon is a captain in, hunts down witches and ends them. The people must turn in anyone who is a witch. If you don’t, then you will face the wrath of the Blood Guard. The Blood Guard is on the hunt for a prize: the Crimson Moth. She is a witch helping other witches escape the Blood Guard and death. Gideon lives for the hunt. The only thing is that it’s Rune he is hunting. Rune is a party girl and enjoys high society. She is a witch. While she puts up this front of being a high society girl, she spends her nights getting witches out of the island. She knows her time is coming; she knows that she is suspected of being the Crimson Moth. Then, something unexpected happens: she and Gideon end up falling in love. Now, the cat-and-mouse game just got a bit more dangerous.

This is a young adult romance fantasy. It’s a trend that I know some people are getting tired of seeing, but I hope it doesn’t go away soon. While I don’t love it whenever the romance is the sole focus, I think it adds more to the fantasy genre. In this one, we have two people who are trying to avoid each other at all costs, but, yet, they end up being brought together. They did not intend to end up as a couple, but it happened. I love seeing the progression and formation of this relationship. I also happen to love enemies to loves, which is the trope this book leans heavily on.

Not only do we have the romance-fantasy bit going on, but this one happens to be very fast-paced. However, it’s not fast enough that the plot and the world-building are lacking. Now, keep in mind that this is YA, so its world is not as developed as some adult titles. We don’t get a lot of the world right away. We know that there was a revolution and that witches once were on top. At first, we don’t know what really happened and the end still has holes. We do know that witches mistreated some people and people thought they were too powerful. Again, it’s kind of vague until we get into the meat of the story as to what happened. I’m not going to go into details about what happened because I do want to keep my review spoiler-free. Once it is revealed what happened, we can see why certain people turned against the witches. It also explains why some characters are the way that they are.

While we do have a romance, the other characters add so much to the story. Rune has built up this core group of friends, who will do anything for each other. It is through this core group of friends that Rune and Gideon are familiar with each other. Seeing how woven everything shows me how well thought out and plotted this story is. We get glimpses into the characters’ pasts and get to see how their interactions with others moulded them into the people they are in the story. Some of them have a shared past. I mean, Gideon and one of Rune’s best friends, Alex, are brothers. They have a shared background but have handled the past differently. Rune has her scars and it is these scars that turned her into the Crismon Moth.

This book did not disappoint at all. It’s fast-paced, exciting, and full of high stakes. This one deserves to be hyped and deserves to be a bestseller. Don’t let the fact that it is YA turn you away. It reads like an upper level of YA. With that being said, there is content here that is not suitable for younger YA readers.

Overall, yes, I am very pleased with this book and glad that I got the chance to read it before its publication date.

This book comes out on February 20, 2024.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an arc of this book.

I absolutely loved this book! It gave me the same thrills of reading Serpent and Dove but this story is done in its own unique way. Every time I thought I could guess what was happening, I was proven wrong and completely surprised. I also liked that this book actually stuck with the enemies to lovers while it being actually true enemies. This is definitely a slow burn and I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops in the next book.

Her take on witches was unique and I really liked the little world building tidbits given at the beginning of some chapters. Overall, I can’t wait for the next book and I’ll be sure to read more from the author in the future.

The only complaint that I have is that this feels like it should be more NA than YA.
