What if I tell you “Finlay Donovan: Mission Atlantic City” is the funniest book in the series? Four books in, and Elle Cosimano is still capable of writing masterpieces.
I’ve concluded that my expectations for the other books were too high and I wasn't treating them for what they were: a fun escape from reality.
I’m still of the idea that things worked a little too well for Finlay, way detached from reality, but for this one, my only goal was to enjoy the journey. And what an adventure!
So, Finaly still has awful timing and ends up being a crucial part of someone else murders, but everything ends up fine thanks to her endless luck and the attitude of a spy. And the crush the detective has for her. And the poor opinions her ex-husband has on her. And the unlimited trust of her best friend. You get the drill.
I mean, did you think Steven was a better person after someone tried very hard to kill him? Well, you're wrong.
Also, no sexy lawyer here, but I'm not giving up; I know we’ll see him again, especially after the final twist.
As an Italian, I feel I must emphasize the stereotypes of only Russians and Italians being the bad guys and the difference between them. I mean, it's all fun, but don't we forget how the real Italian mafia really works.
Anyway, the so-called Italian gangsters are the funniest part of the story, so I'll hold on to the lecture and say that yes, we could kill whoever threatens our dog.
Now, how long do I have to wait for the next one? Because I needed it yesterday!
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley, who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
I have loved this series from the first book, and this installment was no exception. It is laugh out loud funny without sacrificing the plot for the comedy. There is just the perfect balance of unbelievable situations with “wait, I can actually see that happening” and I adore every single moment of it.
Finaly and Vero are back and they are headed to Atlantic City to save Vero’s boyfriend Javi, who has been kidnapped. Of course, they can’t simply head off to Atlantic City to save the day. Finlay’s ex-husband insists on coming along and bringing their kids, and just when they are leaving Finaly’s mom convinces them that it is best if she drives them all.
This is one of those series that doesn’t take itself too series and neither should you. It is just here for a good time and it really is a good time. I always have such a blast with this series and every single book has been fantastic. Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice was no exception and I was genuinely laughing out loud throughout the entire book.
This book seemed to wrap up a lot of the issues that have been haunting Finlay throughout the series so far and I started to worry that the series will be wrapping up. The end of the book set us up for more drama and left us with a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am hopeful that we will be getting more of Finlay, Vero and all of the characters that I have come to love so much.
Absolutely loved the latest installment in the Finlay Donovan series. It was so fun to see Vero and Javi together! A wonderful combination of mystery, humor, and romance. I know the secrets between Finlay and nick will eventually come to a head, but I’m excited to see where the adventures go. While Vero and Finlay may have different love interests, the bond between the two of them is unshakeable and i love that!
The Finlay Donovan books are such a delight, each one is better than the last. Although the books are somewhat goofy, the characters and writing are so strong and they're so meta and self-aware that it doesn't matter. Finlay and Vero's adventures get even more zany and madcap in this latest installment. The whole crew ends up in Atlantic City, including Finlay's ex husband, children, mother, sister, agent, a slew of cops and criminals and some funny dogs. Of course this all turns into fodder for her next book. The characters get themselves into ridiculous situations, and somehow manage to get out of them in a hilarious way. I will continue to read all of these books.
This is book 4 in the series and picks up right where book 3 ended. I can’t get enough of this series! It’s so fast paced, fun, and witty. Some of the situations Finlay and Vero get themselves into are a little over the top but I personally think it adds to the humor and quirkiness of the series. The audiobook I think really makes it - Angela Dawe really brings these characters to life. I will forever recommend this series to everyone!
Thank you so much for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Finlay Donovan Rolls The Dice!
Book four of the Finlay Donovan series: Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice, kicks off with a road trip to Atlantic City for Finlay, Vero, Finlay’s ex-husband, her mother and her two kids. Although they say they are in need of a girls trip, this trip is anything but a relaxing trip to the spa! Finlay and Vero are really on a mission to rescue Javi from his kidnappers, deal with Vero’s loan shark and to find the Aston Martin. What could go wrong?
This book follows the previous three books, finding Finlay and Vero in a series of crazy and outlandish entanglements with tons of humor along the way. I really enjoyed it but I do wish I would have gone back and refreshed my memory on the previous books. This book does take place right where book three left off and does not go back and explain details I had forgotten, assuming the reader already knows. There is so much going on during this Atlantic City trip which makes this a page turner with absolutely no time to get bored. Overall, I love the Finlay Donovan series and I eagerly anticipate each new book being released. Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice did not disappoint. It is a quick, fun read and it was good to be immersed in the craziness yet again! 😊
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this eGalley.
Finlay and Vero decide to head to Atlantic City to settle Vero's debts and save Javi. They find Marco and he refuses to settle the debt. Then they sneak into a loan shark's hotel room and find him and another man dead. Without giving too much away, this is a typical Finlay adventure with twists and turns at every page.
This series is one of my favorites. The writing is so fun and this book was no different! I think the first two books were the strongest, but I liked the flow of the story, the high stakes, and the cliffhanger ending.
Thank you Netgalley for an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I have really enjoyed the Finlay Donovan books and this was no exception. This one certainly has a full cast of characters. Finlay's "girls weekend" with Vero to Atlantic City to try to rescue Vero's guy from a money shark ends up with just about everyone they know showing up. There are good cops, bad cops, computer hackers, an ex-husband, children and Finlay's mother. You can imagine how hard it is for the two women to sneak around trying to locate the missing man.
If you're wanting things to be realistic, just go on to the next book in your TBR. This story isn't realistic, but it is fast moving, hilarious and so entertaining!
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the copy. All thoughts are my own.
Finlay and Vero are back again in another action packed and hilarious book! This one might be my second favorite in the series behind the first book. It was hilarious and fast paced and I truly wish this were a tv series. There is so much to keep straight in these books and I definitely don't do a good job of it, but the good thing is that it doesn't seem to matter that much. I have a great time with them regardless and it's definitely nice to suspend reality for a period of time. I liked how the ending set the scene for what's to come and I'm already looking forward to it!
This is number 4 in the Finlay Donovan series and picks up right where #3 leaves off. Finlay and Vero are off to Atlantic City to rescue Javi and the troublesome Aston Martin. Only they didn't realize Finlay's ex-husband, her mother and her kids would be along for the ride. Of course there are the usual hijinks that only Finlay and Vero can get up to (and out of.) Hot-cop Nick, Finlay's sister and her paramour also make an appearance and this is a girls' weekend you won't soon forget. Best news of all, it seems Finlay has finally tied up all loose ends with that pesky mob business, only to have the police show up at her neighbor's home across the street. This means a #5 is on the way!
*Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this e-arc.*
Synopsis: In the fourth installment of the Finlay Donovan series, Finlay and Vero wind up in Atlantic City to find a missing person and a stolen car, and this time the whole family is along for the ride.
Thoughts: Finlay Donovan has become on of those series for me that is reliably enjoyable. I know what to expect, and the author consistently delivers a fun, zany read. Finlay and Vero are up to their wild shenanigans again in this book, picking up right where the third left off and with a great segue into book five. A note on the audio: I have listened to this entire series on audio, and Angela Dawes captures the characters and vibe of the story pertectly.
Read this if vou like:
Atlantic City
zany characters
shenanigans
cozy/fun mysteries
Stephanie Plum
Thank you Net Galley for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Finlay Donovan you tricky girl!
Let’s start off by saying I have read the first two books in this series, skipped the third, and now finished the 4th. I did not feel like this really impacted my understanding of the story. The author does an amazing job of telling us exactly what happened in the last book. I don’t know if I could pick this up and read it as a stand alone, but I don’t recommend that anyway because the first two are really fun reads.
First, I loved how this book involved so many of the characters we love. Taking everyone on a trip was a brilliant idea, the forced proximity was amazing for the plot, and allowed us to see some good misery for our boy Steven. If we were going to include him, I’m thrilled he had a terrible time. Literally putting every character into like 4 hotel rooms made for some really fun situations, and made it feel like even more of an inconvenient situation for Finlay and Vero.
These books have always been outlandish, and this one is no exception, but I like that the book acknowledges that when Silvia points out how unbelievable Finlay’s books are. I truly felt like I was in an insane rat race around AC.
The only reason this book wasn’t a 5 star read for me was the pacing. It’s very very action packed, and I felt like we were literally going all over the place and meeting new people so quickly. With this many pages happening over the course of like 3 days, it just didn’t feel physically feasible.
Overall, a great read, and a great series!
♡ Finlay and Vero are BACK, and this book is now my absolute favorite of the series! ♡
Thank you to @netgalley @minotaur_books (for my e-arc) and @macmillan.audio for my #gifted advance audiobook. Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by @ellecosimano publishes next week on March 5th!
❤️In this latest installment, the plot picks up immediately at the conclusion of the last book where Finlay and her partner in crime, Vero spent a week at a civilian police academy. The girls plan a getaway weekend in Atlantic City to cover their ruse to track down the loan shark who has kidnapped Vero’s childhood crush, Javi, and to locate the stolen Aston Martin the Russian mafia is hunting.
💛Their plans are quickly thwarted when Finlay’s ex husband, Steven, AND her mom, insist on joining them for some family fun. 😂. Their mission quickly unravels further when the loan shark refuses to negotiate, and Javi’s kidnapper, Marco, is found dead in his hotel suite.
❤️When Finlay’s hot detective boyfriend Nick, and his police pals, also arrive in Atlantic City pursuing a case lead, Finlay is suddenly juggling a jealous ex-husband, two precocious kids, her mother’s marital issues, a decomposing loan shark, and trying to find Vero’s missing boyfriend!! Will she and Vero get out of Atlantic City in one piece? Will Finlay finally have to come clean to Nick in order to keep her loved ones safe?
💛As usual, Cosimano delivers hilarious high jinks while building suspense and leading readers in multiple directions before the big twists and reveal. Narrator Angela Dawe delivers a power house performance, capturing Cosimano’s comedic timing with ease, adding flair to the wide ranging cast of hilarious characters, and performing the action scenes with perfect suspense.
❤️Action, humor, romance, friendship, flawed heroines, and morally grey heroes, this installment has all of the charm that have made this series an international success. And the ending 🙌🏼. I’m so thrilled the series will be continued and can’t wait for what is in store for my favorite best friends, Finlay and Vero.
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice by Elle Cosimano
.
This is book four in Finlay’s outrageous adventures. Obviously people can do what they want and read them out of order, but I highly recommend that you read Finlay’s story in order and start at the beginning.
.
Finlay and Vero make their way to Atlantic City in the hopes of finding a man ( a SPECIFIC man) and arranging terms to settle a debt. But they are followed by many people they love (and some they don’t) and now things are, once again, complicated. 😅😅😅
.
It’s fine! Everything’s fine. Because Finlay is a mom and Vero is a nanny and so they have lots of experience with problem solving and making things up as they go!
I think I enjoyed this book more than the previous two. It was so funny (the “bachelorette party” 🤣🤣🤣🤣), lots of hijinks, lots of face-palming surprises, and an ending that made me 😮.
.
5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll keep this brief. These Finlay books are riotous fun, pure entertainment that make me giggle throughout.
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice Audio and e-book by Elle Cosimano finishes up the crimes Finaly has been funning from. Done and dusted, hopefully. She and Vero have followed the Auston (car) to Atlantic City where their “crimes” are getting more complicated with the arrival of Nick, his retired cop-friend, Charlie, Georgia and Sam, both cops, and an FBI Agent. They brought Finlay’s mom and kids, as well as her ex-husband, Stephen with them. They were looking for Marco, a gangster who had taken the car from Vero’s cousin’s garage at home. Does this sound complicated? It just gets worse. It is a never-ending circle of avoidance, deception, kidnapping, and so much more. Finlay is a writer, romance/thriller mainly. She gets some of her stuff from her own life, which she had never asked for and didn’t want. The story began several books ago and while the reader may not have all the details, there are enough to make this a stand-alone, if that’s your choice.
Vero is Finlay’s “nanny,” and is just as guilty as Finlay for getting them into fixes with criminals and mobsters. All the characters are deeply involved, although most unwillingly and unaware. Finlay’s mom is mad at her husband and that is a humorous subplot as are Finlay’s dealings with her ex. Finlay has just begun a romance with Nick, a police detective, and is worried he will find out all about her near-misses. Finlay is not a criminal. She just gets herself into fixes. This book is supposed to by funny, and it is, but it is frightening as well. Finlay and Vero are alive only through dumb luck and that is never a good look. Entertaining? Yes.
The narrator is Angela Dawe who does a credible job with Finlay and Vero, verging off into voices for other characters, some of which are ridiculous. It is an entertaining listen, however. I enjoyed it and rate her performance four stars. It is better as an audiobook, than a print one.
I was invited to listen to Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice by Macmillan Audio, and to read it by St. Martin’s Press. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #MacMillanAudio #StMartinsPress #ElleCosimano #AngelaDawe #FinlayDonovanRollsTheDice
This book picks up right after the third one ends. Don't read them out of order because not only will you ruin earlier books, you will miss some of the fun that is Finlay Donovan! Seriously! These storylines are completely impossible and implausible but somehow the writing lets the reader in on the joke and we all accept and enjoy the plans that Finlay and Vero come up with. It is like that wild friend we all have but on overdrive, with a mini-van and two small children. This time the circus is headed to Atlantic City and extra family members are along for the ride just in case the sleuthing duo didn't have enough to work around. This series is a complete romp and this installment is no exception! I am torn between wanting the fun of a friend like Finlay and being scared of having a friend like Finlay. But, I will keep reading!
“’I'm telling you, Finlay, this book is good. This whole SERIES is good. The plots may be a little far-fetched, but these characters are so real! It's like they just jump off the page!’”
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice is the fourth in the raucously entertaining series by Elle Cosimano. My thanks go to the Minotaur and St. Martin’s Press Influencer Program and NetGalley for the review copy. It will be available to the public Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
At the end of the previous book, Javi, Finn’s nanny Vero’s boyfriend, was abducted by mobsters that wanted to collect a gambling debt incurred by Vero. In this one, the two women plan to travel to Atlantic City to rescue him, with the cover story of needing time to unwind. However, things snowball, and before you know it, almost all the people they hold dear—and a few people that they don’t—are headed there, too. What follows is a riotous adventure with a lot of moving pieces. I love it.
More than any other, this installment has been controversial among reviewers. In the series debut, Finlay is an innocent, entirely law abiding single mother strapped with bills, work, and child care issues. She’s in the midst of a contentious divorce and her soon-to-be ex is an attorney, which makes Finlay’s efforts an uphill battle. She’s easy to relate to, and when, through no fault of her own, she finds herself with a corpse in her car, it seems entirely believable.
With the second and third books in the series, Finn, accompanied by the more street smart Vero, find themselves in deeper trouble. Just as they mop up one mess, another arises, until there’s a sort of house-that-Jack-built tower of problems that see both women in increasingly tenuous circumstances. They break the law once as a life or death matter, but then cannot safely come clean, so they do their best to put it behind them, but someone or something comes along to threaten the modest safety and security they’ve begun to enjoy. Bodies and crimes pile up, and now, with the fourth installment, the author can’t reasonably convince the reader that whatever happens next is purely an oopsie. Instead, she has to draw on other possibilities. Personally, I like it.
Finn and Vero are chasing down the underworld figures that they believe have abducted Javi, and there’s considerable risk involved. A couple of times I literally draw in my breath at the risks they take. Add to this the need to fabricate excuses to tell the myriad members of the retinue that have descended on Atlantic City with them, and it’s an ambitious undertaking.
In this circumstance, I no longer require realism. The whole thing takes on the flavor of a comic caper, what with the clown car full of women, including Finn’s mother; Finn’s ex-husband, who is in charge of the children; and various others (I am being deliberately vague here) that descend on them once they arrive. To put it another way, if Stephanie Plum and John Dortmunder—or if you prefer, Bernie Rhodenbarr—had a baby, she might be Finlay Donovan.
If you need a good laugh, this book is for you; however, with this series, you really should begin with the first in the series, Finlay Donovan is Killing It. With just four in the series (and the audio is outstanding, too,) this will be a quick and hilarious adventure. What are you waiting for? Jump on in.
another fun edition to the finlay donovan series! while this one felt a bit more off the rails than the others, it was still really fun and i loved following finlay and vero's antics in atlantic city. i think if you enjoyed the other books in the series you'll have fun with this one!
4.5 Stars, rounded up.
I love this series - it is so fun to read, each book makes me laugh, and the pages fly by. Finlay and Vero find themselves in Atlantic City as they continue on their investigation that started in the last book. And it's not just the two of them - they hit the road with Finlay's two kids, her ex-husband, and her mom in tow. This mystery is full of humor and hijinks as Finlay and Vero get into more and more trouble. I honestly had no idea how they would get out of this latest mess - but it was a blast to read!
This outing wraps up a huge story arc for Finlay, and gives the reader a satisfying ending while giving a hint at her next mystery.
I will warn you that this is book four in the Finlay Donovan series - if you've read the first three, you know what fun these books are. If you haven't read this series, I highly suggest starting with the first book for character and story background.
This book picks up exactly where Book 3 leaves off! I highly recommend reading these books in order and this is book #4. It is full of Finlay and Vero antics, but also I liked the policeman boyfriend, ex-husband, mom and kids tagging along to the casinos in Atlantic City. I love this series as a fun and at times over the top break from real life! This is a series for when you need a palate cleanser between books that make you think!
