What a fun light-hearted mystery! This is book 4 in the Finlay Donovan series and I really enjoyed it. This was actually the first book I picked up in this series and I would say that it can be read on its own, but I probably would have enjoyed it even more had I read the previous books in the series first. I absolutely fell in love with the characters and I found myself laughing quite a bit at the interactions between Finlay and Vero on this adventure. This is definitely a fun, fast-paced read that will keep you flipping pages.
5 stars. I have been a Finlay fan from the beginning. I read the first book right when it came out, and the subsequent books have all be part of my most anticipated reads of the year. Sometimes when a series progresses as far as the Finlay series has, the books become progressively sillier, feel a bit dragged out, and it makes you wish the author quite while they were ahead. Although Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice is still decidedly silly, I am so glad that Cosimano keeps adding to the series. In no way do these books feel stale. Rolls the Dice was just as fresh as the first Finlay installment, and I had a smile on my face for the entire read.
What can you expect from the Finlay series? Each book has its own super fast-paced mystery with a lot of shenanigans. It also features one of my favorite bookish friendships ever between Finlay and Vero (those girls are ride or die-- literally), a lot of mom humor, and yes, even a romance! The books do need to be read in order, and although each book has it's own mystery, all 4 of the books so far have had a lot of overlap in characters/ crimes. One of the things I really appreciated about Rolls the Dice is that it feels like we finally get to put a period to the end of one specific story line. Don't get me wrong, with that ending, Cosimano has made it clear that there is more Finlay to come, but I like that a certain story line has finally reached it's conclusion. Because to continue it would have dragged things out just a bit too much, in my opinion. Honestly, this might be my second favorite Finlay book-- my favorite is the original. If you're a fan of the series, you should obviously continue with Rolls the Dice. If you haven't read the Finlay books, but enjoy smartly written cozy mysteries with shenanigans, then you should absolutely give this series a read-- just make sure you read in order.
Thank you so much to Cosimano, Minotaur, and netgalley for the ARC in exchange of my honest review.
This is super cute, but Finlay is getting a bit repetitive. Fun, but not a necessary read at Book #4.
I absolutely love the Finlay Donovan series and I was so thrilled to be approved for her latest book. This was such a fun, suspenseful, and hilarious read! All of the characters are well developed and so relatable. I enjoyed reading about Finlay and Vero’s crazy adventures!
I've been a big fan of the series, but this one didn't do it for me. I was a little annoyed with the far-fetched plot in this book. That's the point, but it felt forced and too much. The 4th book starts right as book 3 ended. Under the false pretense of a girl's trip, Finlay, Vero, the kids, and mom go on a road trip to Atlantic City, They encounter roadblock after roadblock from family, friends, lovers, and bad guys. I'm sure book five is in the works, and I'll read it too I'm sure!
Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for an advance copy of this book to read and review.
This is installment #4 in the Finlay Donovan series and picks up the story right from the end of the previous book, so make sure to read the others in order first. I thought this book was comparable to the first book in its rollicking fun murder capers. I enjoyed it, and it read very quickly, keeping my attention and interest, even though it is the fourth book. It was laugh out loud funny in parts and driven by the characters Finlay and Vero. The whole cast ends up in Atlantic City and there's a whole lot of fun going on. This book brings the Feliks Zhirov story to a close but ends on a cliff hanger that will keep you coming back for book #5. I can't wait!
I've been anticipating this book for a whole year, specially since I read the one before toward the end of 2022. I didn't know what was going to happen considering how the last book ended in a cliffhanger type of situation, but this book was definitely a ride from beginning to end. The fact that so many different characters end up in Atlantic City where Finlay and Vero are trying to mount a rescue operation is both entertaining and frustrating. Just when you think they're going to catch a break, things get ten times more complicated. I think the plot was really fun, but I have to say I'm getting a little bogged down by the extension of the conflict. I was really enjoying how much this book felt like a completion. All the loose ends of the past three books were coming to a head and the characters were finally finding some agency. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book! After awhile, though I understand it, the sneaking around and the lying start to get to me and I want some honesty and vulnerability, specially between Finlay and her love interest. I loved how Finlay took back her power in this one, and I felt like the last chapter was a great conclusion. And then the epilogue happened and now I don't know where this series is going haha. I definitely think I will still continue it, but something has got to give!
O.M.G She’s back at it!!!!! Finlay Donovan & her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero are in sore need of a girls’ weekend away. They plan a trip to Atlantic City, but odds are—seeing as it’s actually a cover story to negotiate a deal with a dangerous loan shark, save Vero’s childhood crush Javi, & hunt down a stolen car—it won’t be all fun & games. When Finlay’s ex-husband Steven and her mother insist on tagging along too, Finlay and Vero suddenly have a few too many meddlesome passengers along for the ride.
Within hours of arriving in their seedy casino hotel, it becomes clear their rescue mission is going to be a bust. Javi’s kidnapper, Marco, refuses to negotiate, demanding payment in full in exchange for Javi’s life. But that’s not all—he insists on knowing the whereabouts of his missing nephew, Ike, who mysteriously disappeared. Unable to confess what really happened to Ike, Finlay & Vero are forced to come up with a new plan: sleuth out the location of Javi & the Aston Martin, then steal them both back.
But when they sneak into the loan shark’s suite to search for clues, they find more than they bargained for—Marco, dead in his bathtub. They don’t have a clue who murdered him, only that they themselves have a very convincing motive. Then four members of the police department unexpectedly show up in town, also looking for Ike—& after Finlay's night with hot cop Nick at the police academy, he’s a little too eager to keep her close to his side.
If Finlay can juggle a jealous ex-husband, two precocious kids, her mother’s marital issues, a decomposing loan shark, & find Vero’s missing boyfriend, she might get out of Atlantic City in one piece. But will she fold under the pressure and come clean about the things she’s done, or be forced to double down?
My goodness, this is such an outrageously fun series. Finlay Donovan Rolls The Dice picks up right where the last book ended. Finlay and Vero are going on a road trip to complete an important task. Somehow the whole gang tags along (Finlay's kids, ex, and mom). Shenanigans ensue.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's press for the advanced reader's copy. I love this series. I highly recommend it.
I'm a HUGE Finlay fan. I recommend this series to sooo many people. It pains me to say, Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice went off the rails. Books 1 & 2 are so much fun. Book 3 got a bit wily, but I felt the author could recover. Book 4 is just too much. There is so much going on, so many bad guys around every corner, so many secrets. I'm okay with suspending belief while reading, but this book just pushed it too far. If more Finlay books come out, I may not be on the reader list. So sad to type those words!!
Thank you NetGalley, Minotaur Books, and Elle Cosimano for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
What a treat to enter back into Finlay and Vero’s world, I've enjoyed this series so much. Cosimano’s witty humor and all the delightful hi-jinx from the previous book is back in full force.
I have to say, this felt like it *could* have been the end of the series and as much as I have loved these books it was ended in such a way that I would not be upset about it! However I could see another book coming too… how’s that for vague?
Fans of the previous books in the series will no doubt enjoy this one as well.
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice will be on US bookshelves March 5!
Finlay and Vero are taking a road trip to Atlantic City to rescue Vero’s friend Javi and retrieve the missing Aston Martin. The two aren’t going alone though, they’re joined by Finlay’s mom, ex husband, 2 kids, boyfriend, and sister. The story unfolds full of mischief, craziness, and laughs. The characters jump off the page as usual which makes this another great Finlay Donovan novel.
Finlay and Vero are two of my favorite characters! I love their messiness, loyalty and friendship! These books are like modern day cozy mysteries and I cannot get enough of them. This one goes a little further into relationships too with Nick and Javi. Cannot wait for the next one!
Thank you St Martins press for an ARC of this book.
The Finlay Donovan series is one of my favorite series. Following Finlay and Vero has been my joy since book 1. No doubt this book doesn’t disappoint. They are still trying to track down Feliks and get back the Aston. I really enjoyed the added romance aspects in this book. Finlay is trying to figure out what her romance with “Hot Cop” is and let’s say Vero and Javi don’t disappoint! Just when I thought this series was over I read the afterward and…. What? A body is found in the back yard of the most nosy neighbor, Mrs Haggerty! This gave me great joy knowing there is hopefully more Finlay and Vero for all of us fans in the future! Highly suggested you read this and Elle keeps writing great stories for us!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice. In this fourth book of the Finlay Donovan series, Finlay and Vero visit Atlantic City where the expected hijinks ensue. I enjoyed this book just as much as the previous three and can't wait for the next!
Loved it! I love following Finlays journey to find the bad guys and get into all kind of trouble along the way. Definitely keeps you interested and wanting more!
Picking up right where book 3 ended it was easy to slide right back into Finlay and Vero’s crazy world! I really enjoy the chaos and quirk of this series and this fourth installment was no different.
We got a lot more relationship progression with more than one couple. The chaos and madness Finlay, Vero and crew always get into is completely unrealistic and exaggerated and so much fun to pretend that a single mother can have this wild other life. Yes none of this is believable but that’s what makes it a fun adventure. The way I envision this series is like a grown up single mom Veronica Mars, let’s just hope when the final book gets written it ends better than VMars did :(
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC of Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice in exchange for my honest review.
Book four in the Finlay Donovan series picks up right where book three left off. Finlay and Vero are determined to head to Atlantic City to rescue Javi on a “girl's trip." But Finlay's mom and her ex-husband wheedle their ways into the picture leading to more hilarity and trouble for my favorite fictional dynamic duo after Lucy and Ethel.
This was a really fun read, as we follow Finlay and Vero on their next adventure. While it wasn’t my favorite in the series as it was slow at some points and outlandish, I still enjoyed it overall. I would recommend it!
Will this be the last we hear about Finlay and her crazy escapades?
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice by Elle Cosimano picks up right where book 3 ended. Finlay and Vero set off for Atlantic City to take back what is "theirs" but find themselves with unexpected accomplices. Finlay's mom, ex-husband Stephen, and their mischievous kids head away for a "girl's weekend" that is anything but relaxing.
As always, Finlay is in way over her head while she juggles a mob boss, a loan shark, a murder scene, a few schemers, her new detective love interest, parent's marital issues, sister's budding romance and a constipated dog. Truly, you have to read this book to understand all those issues! While this could be a stand alone, it will be more entertaining if you read the books in order.
Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Look for this to release on 3.5.24.
