With gorgeous pictures and simple sentences, Golkar’s Ancient Ice teaches kids about glaciers and the role they play in the environment and what they can teach us about the past. It looks at the role humanity is playing in the gradual disappearance of these beautiful giants of the natural realm. Highly recommended for teaching kids about climate change, and especially for those already interested in glaciers or climate studies.

If you've ever wondered why glaciers matter, this is the book to read. It gives a succinct introduction to the roles of glaciers in our world and the ways that scientists are studying them. The text is quite accessible, with a kid friendly vocabulary. Pages emphasize photographs more than text, so it's a quick read that provides a quick introduction to the concepts. This is a good choice for elementary age readers.
What and where glaciers are, why they're melting too rapidly, and how they act as proof of historical changes in climate – this very quickly-absorbed lesson for the geology classroom is great at getting the basics across. Ideal for the younger half of the primary school, this is four and a half stars.
This book enlightens readers on the study of glaciers and why their study is important for the future of the planet. The photographs show both white and blue ice and help readers understand how glaciers are. Activities in the book are designed to help readers further understand how glaciers were created and how they melt.
Thanks to Netgalley and Capstone for the ARC of this!
I think it was a little dry for the intended age range, my 7 and 10 year old were able to follow but never seemed particularly drawn in. It was also quite wordy as a read aloud, so I'd recommend more for the older end of the age range who are reading well on their own and already have shown an interest in the topic.
This is a cool children's book about glaciers: what they are, where they're found, what's happening to them, why they're important. It contains photographs, illustrations and even a DIY recipe to make your own (mini) glacier.
Did you know there are tropical glaciers? And that glaciers helped sculpt Earth's landscapes as they moved? Or that Earth should be in a cooling, not warming, phase right now, based upon natural climate change cycles?
There is a lot to learn from studying the ancient ice of glaciers. This book will inspire you and your child to find out what we as individuals can do to slow these important glaciers from melting.
What are glaciers? How do they happen? Why do they matter? Where can they be found? What is making them change? How are they related to long term changes in our weather? How can we learn about weather in the past? These questions and more are explored with words and photos and there is even a glossary and a suggested reading list!
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Capstone/Capstone Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
This book was so adorable, I loved everything about it, the illustrations were so well done, they suited the book perfectly, the story was amazing as well. I’m sure the kids are going to be just as enthralled with this amazing book as I was. I will definitely recommend! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
An excellent introduction to children on the concept of climate change and the crucial role essayed by ice sheets and glaciers in the prevention of global warming, Ancient Ice by elementary school teacher and an Ed.M. in language and literature from Harvard Graduate School of Education, Golriz Golkar is a splendid read for the young and old alike.
Supplemented by absolutely breathtaking illustrations. Courtesy Getty Images, NASA Earth Observatory Images etc, the book admirably succeeds in whetting the appetite for curiosity in young and inquisitive minds. Ancient Ice begins with an ominous statistic – fewer than 30 out of 150 glaciers remain standing at the Glacier National Park in Montana. If that was disheartening, then brace yourselves for a grimmer prospect. The remaining glaciers are also expected to completely melt away within the next three decades.
Golkar concisely elucidates the importance of glaciers on and for Planet Earth. Not only do glaciers provide an invaluable source of drinking water for millions of inhabitants, but they also contain within their confines some astonishing clues about the effects of climate change. For example, the presence of glacial dust would reveal the existence of a desert in the past. Glaciers also assist in helping the Earth remain cool. The sheer white colour of a glacier means that extra light from the sun is also reflected into space.
The best part of Ancient Ice that resonated with me personally is the DIY experiments that are a mix of both Science and fun. For example, intrepid kids using a few chunks of ice and blue food colouring can create their own glacier and then experiment upon it by exposing glacial block to sunlight, adding salt to it, and pouring hot and cold water alternatively on it.
Golriz Golkar, ably assisted by Dr. Leigh A. Stearns, Professor Department of Geology, University of Kansas has produced a book that would provide lots of joy and knowledge to many a kid and parent.
(Ancient Ice is published by Capstone Press and will be available for sale beginning 1st January 2024).

I love these informative non-fiction books which children will be hooked on. This would be used in both Geography and English. I could develop a cross curricular unit based on non-fiction forms of writing. This would also help writing in Geography too. I know children just love reading these types of books too.
Ancient Ice is an educational book about glaciers, their history, the impact of humans, and the probable impacts on the environment in the near future. It is aimed toward kids in 3rd to 5th grade, generally ages 8-11.
There are tons of breathtaking pictures of glaciers here, a few science experiments that kids will love, and age-appropriate explanations about glaciers, their history, and their future. Most importantly, how the future of glaciers will affect the environment and people's lives. Wonderful book for kids to understand some of the basics of the current state of things!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
What a fantastic book - it has a little something for everyone.
Author and elementary school teacher Golriz Golkar has written yet another book that students will be excited to read!
In short: Why melting glaciers will impact life on Earth
Golkar draws readers’ attention to glaciers, teaches us about their formation, and then tells us why studying them is so important. She wants to show us that Earth’s climate has shifted over time and emphasizes that it’s our human activities that have had the biggest impact.
Readers will learn that since forming about 20,000 years ago, glaciers have shaped our landscape, helped cool our planet, and continue to provide fresh water for living things.
This fantastic book is full of information, vibrant photos, a glossary/index/list of internet sites for students’ research purposes, and hands-on activities. It’s beautifully designed, guiding readers through questions and handy fact boxes. It won’t take long before readers feel a sense of loss…the first page had me feeling sad! I’m a big believer in these types of books for students because the more we know, the better we can protect our environment and keep our planet healthy. It needs to start at the bottom. Now that we’re more aware of human-driven climate change, we can make acting on reducing it a priority.
