"Deadly Veil" marks the tenth installment in the Detective Jane Phillips series by OMJ Ryan, and it's a testament to Ryan's skill that the series remains as compelling as ever. In this latest adventure, readers are plunged into a high-stakes investigation following a brutal car bomb attack on a senior executive of a major UK oil company. The plot thickens with the murder of an airline CEO, painting a target on the backs of the world's biggest polluters.
DCI Jane Phillips is as tenacious as they come, and her pursuit of the eco-terrorists suspected of these heinous crimes is both relentless and fraught with danger. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that there's more at play than meets the eye, with a shadowy figure orchestrating events from behind a "Deadly Veil."
Ryan's narrative is a masterclass in suspense, with each chapter ratcheting up the tension. The pacing is impeccable, ensuring that readers are hooked from the first page to the last. The author's deep understanding of police procedures shines through, lending authenticity to the Major Crimes Unit's investigation.
The thematic exploration of environmental activism taken to a violent extreme is timely and thought-provoking, challenging readers to consider the lengths to which some might go to make their voices heard. Yet, it's the character development that truly stands out. Phillips is a protagonist with layers, her personal growth across the series adding depth to her character and raising the stakes of her mission.
"Deadly Veil" is a narrative with a pulse, a story that breathes life into the genre. Fans of the series will be delighted with this latest entry, while newcomers will find themselves compelled to visit the earlier books. OMJ Ryan has delivered yet another gripping tale that cements Detective Jane Phillips' place among the great fictional detectives.
Having read the first 4 books in this series from a box set, I then went on to catch up with the series. From reading the first book in August last year I can now say I'm up to date with the whole series have read and enjoyed each and every one.

This again was another exceptional read. Although I read books 10 and 11 the wrong way around I don't think it took anything away from the enjoyment.
When Jayne and her team start a new case it doesn't take long to start to get stuck in and start piecing things together. The Team are part of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit.
I say it a lot when I've read books based in and around Manchester but for me knowing the areas that get mentions really adds to the story.
A car bomb a stabbing this book is packed with tension. It starts off at speed and continues the whole way through.
Highly recommended read.
This police murder mystery and suspense had me hooked!! I could not stop reading this book for nothing! It kept me on the edge of my seat and I love DCI Jane as a character and her mysteries. I will definitely continue to read more in this series I love it!!!

An enjoyable read, but expected nothing else from the author, having read his previous work.
If you haven’t read any of his books, give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.
Recommend.

This is a wonderful book. I have discovered a new author. I can’t wait to immerse myself in his books.
The plot of this book is very intricate. There is much going on. We see the planning of the crimes and the deterioration of the relationships between the conspirators. But, as they use “code” names, we don’t know who they are. Brilliant device!
A bomb goes off in town. The man in the car barely survives. The Terrorist Unit of the police do not think it is a terrorist attack. The highly questionable/morally deficient boss assigns the case to DCI Jane Phillips and DI Jones of the major crimes unit.
Jane sets her team on the case. The investigation moves apace from the beginning. As more attacks occur, the tension in the story ratchets up. One unfortunate man is even murdered.
Three people are seen on CCTV running from one of the scenes. Who they are remains a mystery. They look to be targeting people in the energy field. Are the ne’er-do wells eco terrorists?
There is also a “puppet master” involved in this story, which adds another layer of mystery. Who is this mysterious person? Even the three people committing the crimes don’t know their identity.
Slowly, the police put the pieces together. Surprises aplenty. The denouement is surprising and makes perfect sense.
I want to thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
Another intriguing plot takes the reader to Manchester on a case that takes some minds back to the Troubles. However, times are different yet car bombs tend to be dangerous. It seems like several people are involved, but who is behind this and why?
The team knows someone is leaking information to the press, and it is really disturbing.
There is a lot going on in this book, which keeps the reader happily entertained, and it’s always a pleasure to deal with this great team!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Veil, the tenth novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit.
Jane and the team are asked to investigate the car bombing of a senior oil and gas industry figure. They can see three figures fleeing the scene on CCTV, but there is no detail. When an airline CEO is stabbed to death a few days later they suspect that they are hunting eco-terrorists. This is not good news with a major energy conference coming to town.
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Veil, which is an engrossing police procedural with some interesting twists and a surprising solution. I felt the tension throughout the novel, not just from the looming deadline of the conference, but also from the internal pressure of a psychopathic Chief Constable, a local reporter with a mole and certain events that add to the angst. It’s all go and there’s never a dull moment.
The narrative switches between Jane and the three co-conspirators, giving the reader a wider view of events. It works well. I must admit that I’m not a big fan of the eco war in fiction. I am aware of the issues and do what I can within my means, but I don’t need it rammed down my throat in my escape place. Fortunately this novel takes a rather unusual approach and I loved it. I’m not going to say what that approach is, but there’s a certain amount of irony in it. It’s clever.
By now Jane and the team are old friends, so it’s pleasant to spend time with normal folk doing a difficult and stressful job. Apart from the Chief Constable they are all regular people with no major problems or issues in their lives and that is restful.
Deadly Veil is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
In this latest DCI Jane Phillips book, she and her team are tasked with determining the culprits behind crimes that appear to be terrorist attacks but on a smaller scale. An oil executive is the victim of a car bombing, an airline executive is stabbed, and this appears to be only the beginning. There are suspects caught on camera, but of course, they are disguised so the footage isn’t really of any help. And they plan well in advance so that each perpetrator leaves the crime scene via a different exit, so witnesses can’t track them.
Jane’s boss is seriously putting the pressure on – not because she’s worried about more people getting hurt, but because every crime reflects badly on her force. Ironic, considering she’s the most crooked of them all. And wouldn’t you know, the mole that Jane believes is passing on information to the papers is at it again! One more stress the team doesn’t need on top of hunting down the suspects. But Jane will stop at nothing to protect the people of Manchester, no matter how many rules she must break or how many authority figures try to get in her way.
The reader sees from both Jane’s perspective and that of the gang responsible for terrorizing the public. While we don’t know their exact identities, we can see how and why they’re planning their attacks. Together with what the police uncover, you may be able to determine the mastermind behind this gang, but even so, it’s fun to see how it plays out. This series has one of the more memorable cast of characters, and their interactions together are always a treat. Particularly Jones and Bovalino. They always provide the right amount of comic relief. And you’ll need that when you reach the end, as Jane makes a discovery that’s sure to affect this team for quite some time.
I’ve been following the Detective Jane Phillips series ever since the first book came out back in 2019, and it’s one of those detective series that never seems to disappoint. Deadly Veil is already book number ten of the series, and I have to say that the series is still going strong even after all this time. This sequel delivers us another engaging and suspenseful detective thriller, and like always I literally flew through the pages. There is just something about this series that makes the books extremely readable!
It’s true that you can technically read Deadly Veil as a stand-alone, but I personally wouldn’t recommend reading this series out of order. Why? You will be missing out on a lot of character background as well as key events of the previous books, and you won’t appreciate the full impact of a certain extremely unlikeable character otherwise. Deadly Veil once again has some shocking developments on a personal level, although the story does mainly focus on the case itself. That said, the series is great fun in general, so worth your time if you need/want to catch up.
I always look forward to spend time with Jane Phillips and the rest of her team, and the banter is just as brilliant as in the previous books. I think the dynamics between the team members is one of the reasons this series works so well… Although I do have to say that I’m getting VERY tired of having to deal with Fox again and again. I thought that things would finally change after the revelations in the previous book, but I guess I was wrong… I do hope this subplot will wrap up soon, because it’s getting a bit repetitive as well as highly annoying.
The case in Deadly Veil is without doubt a very interesting one with the mystery attacks, influence of social media, grooming and cult vibe. While the case mostly doesn’t hit close to home for the main characters, this doesn’t mean that the story doesn’t have impact. It makes you wonder about just how much power social media has, and how easy it can be to use it to corrupt others. There are some twists and red herrings along the way, and as a whole I liked how the plot was developed. The ending itself also left me curious to see what will happen in the next book…
The writing style itself is just as engaging as I’ve become used to, and somehow it is very easy to just keep turning page after page. The page itself is fast, and I can really appreciate how the banter balances out the more serious topics. I could have done without having to deal with Fox AGAIN as this particular element is getting very old, but as a whole Deadly Veil was still a very successful sequel.
A car bomb, then a stabbing. Victims are executives of corporations that are believed to be harming the planet.
DCI Jane Phillips is tasked with finding the suspects who are targetting the heads of these corporations.
They are eco warriors, and they are taking orders from an unknown shadowy figure only known as Charlie - named for Charles Manson.
Problem is, the group responsible are not taking credit for the attacks. Why?
The foot soldiers of the eco terrorist group will surprise and stun the reader. Not to mention the head of the organization.
Jane also has to find the mole in the department who is leaking information to the press. The suspect is narrowed down to five close colleagues.
When I noticed that the investigation was about eco terrorism, I rolled my eyes. Not that I do not care about the future of our planet, but because I do not believe that protests and killings help at all. We all have to be involved in conserving our resources.
I really got into this police procedural, Jane is a strong leader with a loyal and capable team. I like her dedication to crime fighting, and her methodical manner of solving cases.
The book is gripping and totally believable, in my opinion. The twist of who the killers are, and the person that has total control over their actions stunned me.
It is a brilliant read, and I could hardly put this book down.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

You love the characters, the flow of the authors words as you try to figure out the mystery. Why three young kid would be involved in the making of a homemade bomb. Footage later showing three shadowy figures leaving this private members club.. This.series is always enjoyable to read, and I look for the next one.

Wow, I found Deadly Veil to be a very absorbing and entertaining read. It certainly got off to a fab start with the opening chapter which drew me into the story straightaway. I really like DCI Phillips and her team, and love their camaraderie, banter and way they work together and complement each other. This is a very well written book that flows effortlessly and is an absolute pleasure to read. I think the plotline is intricate and very well thought out, it certainly went off in a way I didn't expect and I had many wow moments when reading - especially in the last part of the book. The author has managed to create so much tension and suspense here which in turn made this a very moreish, thrilling read that I kept returning to whenever I could. Good to see an ongoing thread has been resolved and I'm looking forward to see what way the other one goes hopefully in the next book. Overall, a thrilling read that I thoroughly enjoyed and a great police procedural that I'd recommend. I loved everything, can't fault it at all and will be eagerly looking out for the next book.

Yet another great book, which can be read as a standalone. Or as usual in the series. The characters are great. I really recommend the series
I have read the other books in this series, but I think this would work as a standalone. I’m already invested in these police characters, so I loved it. Great plotting too, what a fabulous reveal. I enjoy the was all the characters have their foibles and the way they support each other. I can’t wait for the next one. A five star police procedural.
