i warmed up to this book in the last chapter. it was decent until then, slow, slightly difficult to follow, but kept your attention. but those last few chapters. make. it. worth. it. i was so confused as to why there were still 3 chapters left and the details in the set up felt so out of place compared to the rest of the story.
Better Call Saul es que lawyer and his girlfriend navigate dual custody, murder trials, acquittals, woodworking, mormons.
that last peg, makes the plinko bounce.
I loved The Plinko Bounce!! Andy was a fantastic character. I loved his journey and struggles he went through. I didn’t love the way the women’s voices sounded like a computer.
Thanks to NetGalley and RB Media for the advance audiobook. The audiobook was very well done. It had multiple narrators and the accents were spot on. The regional accents combined with the quality of the acting really added humor and pathos to the story.
The story itself was fantastic. First rate legal thriller. It neither romanticized nor pilloried the law. It just took us through a murder trial defended by a great attorney in which justice was most definitely not done. Unlike other books in this genre, neither the criminals nor the cops nor the law itself are heroes. It is a job with a particular set of rules. The winners tend to be those that exploit those rules. Andy, the lawyer, clearly believes in the law above himself and understands that it is entirely separate from any notion of justice. But he finds that he himself cannot stay above the fray by sticking to the rules and has to make real life choices like everybody else. I really enjoyed this book.
Andy Hughes is a public defender. The Plinko Bounce focuses on the case he gets representing Damian Bullins. Bullins is accused of murdering the wife of a local wealthy man. Bullins admitted to the murder and Hughes knows he is guilty. However, the Miranda Rights were read incorrectly to Bullins and there is enough reasonable doubt that Hughes can create to get Bullins off.
The book focuses on Hughes and the prosecutor gathering evidence and presenting it in court. It highlights that with enough items to pose reasonable doubt could even get someone guilty a not guilty verdict. After Bullins is found guilty of only obstruction of justice, Hughes is forced to to use a little known rule where an attorney can give up information that normally is protected. This forces Bullins to threaten Hughes and his young son.
This was a very interesting read/listen. I think someone who like crime stories and/or true crime pod cast would also enjoy The Plinko Bounce.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting book and it took a bit to develop the mystery of this case. I liked how in depth the book was.
I really love the way Martin Clark tells the story. This was the first of his books that I have listened to. I was a little concerned frankly, because he writes complex stories with a lot going on, and those don't tend to be the kinds of books I respond very well to in an audio format because my attention is not the same as when I am reading words on a page. I was delighted to find that I had no issues at all with the complexities of characterization or plotting, and even the dual narration did not bother me despite my usually preferring a single narrative voice.
I found this to be an incredible story both in terms of its considerations of human nature and the law, and I simply can't say enough good things about it. As a lawyer and a prolific reader, I found everything about this to be an engaging , entertaining, and thought-provoking story. The writing is excellent, the pacing is spot-on, and the characterizations are marvelous. I ran through the entire range of human emotion while listening, but never in a way that felt overdone or overly dramatic - despite the often overly dramatic nature of the action in the story.
This was a fantastic tale and I definitely will recommend it widely!
Plinko Bounce by Martin Clark, narrated by David Aaron Baker and Morgan Hallett, is a legal novel that hits all the right notes for me. Andy Hughes, a seemingly tireless public defender, steps into the courtroom, defending repeat offender, Damian Bullins, in a murder case that reads like high-stakes legal drama.
Clark presents case law, provides courtroom banter and dry wit, adding layers of intrigue and revenge. Baker provides a compelling and emotional performance to help me appreciate the importance of precedence and legal ramifications. I found it difficult to slip this one into one of my normal genres, but I still enjoyed how it provided a different sort of tale.
Thank you to RB Media, Recorded Books for the advanced audio copy via NetGalley.
This book intrigued me. I enjoyed the perspective given on the legal system not was an interesting story that felt real.
Many thanks to NetGalley and RB Media, Recorded Books, for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This was narrated by David Aaron Baker and Morgan Hallett, both of whom do a fantastic job narrating this story!!!
This is my first book by this author and definately will not be my last!!! I absolutely consumed this highly riveting legal thriller!!
Andy Hughes is a 17 year veteran of the Public Defenders office who is suffering from boredom and burnout. He has faithfully represented the addicted, the deviant and career criminals that are frequent flyers of the system. But things change when he catches the case of Damian Bullins, a career criminal with a meth addiction. Damian is accused and has confessed to the murder of a wealthy wife of a mormon businessman. However, Andy realizes that there has been a procedural error and can get the confession tossed. So, of course, Damian changes his story multiple times. The more than Andy digs the stranger the case gets.
This is a fast paced, legal thriller full of courtroom and police procedure. The characters are well developed and likeable. The plot is believable, solidly developed and there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. It also has a very satisfying ending that I did see coming.
This is similar to #thelocal by Joey Hartstone, which is also a great legal thriller.
Publishes 9/12/2023. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Thanks to RB Media, NetGalley, Martin Clark, and narrators David Aaron Baker and Morgan Hallett for the opportunity to review this audiobook. The Plinko Bounce was an excellent book and reminded me of early John Grisham books. I enjoyed the characters in the book and hope for more stories about them.
