She did it again. In this new opus of her Honey Badger Chronicles serie, Shelly Laurenston managed to once again deliver a novel full of action, comedy, witty comebacks and messed up but lovable characters. The plot thickens, we learn more and more about the MacKilligan sisters and their friends and in the end we only want one thing : the next book of the serie. I highly recommend this book to every paranormal romance fan.
Gosh, where to even begin with this book filled with mayhem? I’ve jumped in and out of this series, so I can assure you that you will be lost in a whirlwind of chaos no matter if you’re read all the previous books or not, so this can totally be standalone if you are interested.
Tock is one of the band of misfit badgers who are notoriously up to no good. They might be excellent basketball players, but they are really terrible at staying out of trouble. I mean that in the best possible way because their antics make for hilarious reading. Shay is part of the Malone family of shifters and he somehow gets caught up in the tornado of Tock’s life, hitching a ride to a seemingly straightforward heist that goes sideways. Turns out, he can come in handy even when paired off with a nearly indestructible shifter.
While this does include romance-ish aspects and some smutty good times, it really does lean heavily into the larger story of espionage, backstabbing, corrupt politics, etc. If that’s not your cup of tea, I’d still say that this will put it all in a way that a paranormal reader can enjoy. Really - the level of mayhem is off the charts! I always go through a roller coaster of emotion reading these books that always starts in confusion, shock, but ends with smiles and happiness. If that sounds good, check out this or other books in this series.
Once again the Badgers strike again. This is Shay and Tock’s story but all the other characters we love are back with some new ones. This story is hilarious! It also shows the lengths family goes to protect the ones they love. I am always ready to read and re-read this series. And I’m impatiently waiting for the next book.
While you don’t have to read these in order- there are storylines that we get more information to and the stories are connected.
Well-written and engaging from start to finish. Well done Ms. Laurenston- your fans are applauding you once again.
Shelly Laurenston did not disappoint in her hilariously latest instalment of her honey badger chronicle. It, as always, checks up all the point funny action packet romantic read, that makes you not want to put it down until you're finished, then you're waiting for the next book which based on the hint is Nelle/Keane, & is potentially the last honey badger book as we discovered the next friend had been in a serious relationship the whole time her wedding is next year. While this is the beginning of the end of Honey Badger's, plenty of stories are waiting in the wider shifter world for the author's time & imagination, so this is probably not the penultimate story.
I loved this book!!! This author is pretty much always a must read for me, and this installment did not disappoint. Tock is on a mission, and Shay keeps messing up the timing. I really appreciate characters from previous books finally getting their story, and bringing past friends with them. The cast is funny as always, and the plot fun and engaging. If you want fast paced, funny, and snarky- this will do it.
The Honey Badger Chronicles Series just keeps getting better. This shifter series is unlike any other shifter series out there. It isn't, strictly speaking, a shifter romance series. Yes, each book does have a main couple that ends up in a relationship, but more time is spent on the overarching story that ties all of these groups of shifters together.
If you are looking for a series of shifter/human love stories that end after one book for each couple, don't stop here because this isn't what you are looking for. BUT, if you are looking for a shifter series with a whole lot of kick ass female shifters that are loyal to their chosen families and will fight to the death for each other, and they just happen to find partners along the way, check out this series.
For as much as these honey badger shifters fight, they are endlessly entertaining. Readers will spend a lot of time laughing at the shenanigans that go down, even in the midst of ambushes and intense fire fights.
I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another great instalment to the Honey Badger series.
Hot guys, tough but slightly crazy chicks, bad guys and cameos from old friends with action and romance.
What more could you want?
Cheeky, chaotic, and a whole lot of fun "Born to be Badger," drives right into the fast-paced world of the "Honey Badger Chronicles." This installment of the series focuses mainly on honey badger shifter, Emily aka "Tock" as she, her wacky group of teammates (ahem, besties), and quirky family get caught up in a violent conspiracy. Admists the wild mall food court brawl with shifter lionesses, math camp debacles with baby tiger shifters, and even some basketball practice, Tock finds herself apprieicating the meaning of good friends amongst all odds. That's honestly the best synopsis I can give you.
This book includes:
- shifters of all shapes and sizes including wolves, bears, hyenas, honey badgers, etc
- found family
- potentially a size k**k idk
- animated side characters
- gun fights and private jets
- smart and sarcastic women with lots of cheeky side comments
- love, family, and revenge
- reluctant romance
- and so much more
I came into "Born to be Badger" with 0 expectations or background knowledge on the series. It was presented to me as a "shifter romcom" that can be read as a stand alone, and I do disagree with both of those things. There was very little romance (too bad too becuase I loved the romance we saw and would have loved to dive deeper) and found it very difficult to follow with so many characters and POVs to keep track of - which I assume would be easier to read if I had read the rest of the series first. Thats what this book isn't, HOWEVER, it is still a very fun and engaging read. Dare a say its one of the most feminist fantasy books I've read? It is so casual in its assertions that women are crazy and smart and hot and cool and insane all at the same time. It doens't worry about feminizing women and celebrates mundane liberation. ONce I got a handle on all the characters and the complexities of the relationships between them, I was totally drawn in.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a silly little read, likes fully developed side characters, and like a little fantasy in their chaos.
I received this eBook as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NeGalley, Shelly Laurenston, and Kensington Books for the opportunity to review this book. This review has also been posted to Goodreads.
I’d been following the releases of the books in the Honey Badger Chronicles series, but I didn’t actually start reading them until a few months before the fourth book was due to come out. Once I started, I couldn’t stop until I finished all three and now whenever a new book in the series hits my kindle, I begin reading it pretty much immediately. While Born to Be Badger took me a little longer to finish, that’s just because of my schedule and has nothing to do with how I felt about the book. I loved it just as much as the others and I had such a fun time with it!
This series always puts such a smile on my face and I just feel so happy whenever I’m in this world and with these characters. I love all the shenanigans, the crazy plots, the hilarious moments, and the heartwarming ones too! I loved Tock and Shay, they were adorable and cute and I loved getting to know them more. Born to Be Badger was so awesome, it went to interesting places, and I can’t wait to be back in this world again!
Born to Be Badger is a wild ride filled with action, adventure, and big personalities. Shelly Laurenston’s newest entry into her ever-expanding shifter world is seriously fun.
Tock is a honey badger who is no-nonsense and obsessed with time. She’s blunt to a hilarious degree and has a way of just taking care of things that I really liked. Shay is a tiger with soft, squishy feelings, absolutely no time management skills, and a daughter to get to math camp on time – even when bad guys are after him and the woman he’s supremely attracted to. Tock tries to ignore him at first, but you can’t ignore a tiger trying to get your attention. Shay and Tock just click from the start and I loved them together. They’re funny, her relationship with his daughter is sweet without being saccharine, and I just enjoyed reading about them. Their romance is slow burn and understated to the point that I wish there had been a bit more time devoted to it, but I honestly didn’t mind too much because I just liked them together. There’s an easy chemistry between them that makes them stand out and the two of them stand on their own without being overwhelmed by the giant personalities of the sizeable supporting cast.
Born to Be Badger continues several plots from the Honey Badger Chronicles and Laurenston’s other shifter series, but doesn’t entirely have one of its own outside of Tock and Shay’s understated love story. Normally this would bother me but it kind of works in this book because the daily lives of Tock, Shay, and their friends and family are interesting on their own. I liked seeing Tock and her teammates continue their chaotic (sometimes bloodthirsty) ways and Laurenston introduces several interesting plots that I expect to see continued in future books. So in terms of the series, it’s a bridge book, maybe even filler, but it doesn’t feel that way. Quite simply, this book is fun. There are shenanigans, dozens of shifters, and intriguing hints of what’s to come. I had a blast reading Born to Be Badger and it’s zany, frenetic energy, unique characters, and Laurenston’s entertaining storytelling make it a book I’ll enjoy over and over.
Another fast-moving, hilarious, action-filled read…
This is one of my favourite series. Ever. The snark, the humour, the action and romance all comes together in character-filled, plot-fueled stories that always hit their mark…
Tock and Shay are the couple at the center and their dynamic, as has always been the case, is as unique as they are. Tock would rather climb out of a moving vehicle than talk to her family – and that is not the most interesting part of her personality! Shay is a big cat, quiet, with no need for a watch or time tracking because, really, he just doesn’t care. Definitely opposites, I love the way they still find time to fall in love while dodging enemies, death attempts and all their families combined…
Dialogue is fast, ferocious and (often) hilarious. You could say that about the plot and the characters as well. The pacing is incredibly quick as the story unfolds in one city and then the next. Family and friends are simply everywhere and kept my mind spinning (happily) trying to keep them all straight. I think I would love their wild relatives – if I didn’t want to hide from the too, lol. The author invited me in to their world and now I don’t want to leave it…
All I can say is buckle up and enjoy the ride!
*I happily reviewed this story
**Thank you to Kensington Books & NetGalley
After falling in love with the Pride Series, and literally all the other series by this author, I can honestly say, the badgers are my favorites. Shay and Tock do not disappoint and and are so funny. They go about falling for each other in almost a soft way, compared to their friends. However, that is not to say the shenanigans that this storyteller is known for do not abound. There's a secret government agent g-ma, enhanced biological weapons, a new family connection out of left field, and angry mafia lions. An absolute riot, and I can't wait to read what comes next.
Born to be Badger has it all! I have to say that I love reading Shelly Laurenston books and I never miss reading one. In fact you could say that when I know one of her books is coming out I stalk Amazon to make sure the date doesn't change LOL! This book has Badgers, Tigers, Friends, Romance, Family Drama, Humor & Bad guys! The story kept my attention and I have to say for me I couldn't put it down until I finished it! I didn't want to miss a thing!
Tock is sent on a mission from her family and Shay notices she's going to leave, and he's not going to take No from her because he's got her back. It's a good thing because she's going to need the Tiger's help! And of course she's going to need her friends help too because they are all in danger! And the drama with her family has just started!
When they get back from the mission Shay has a little surprise waiting for him. His 10 year old is waiting at his house and the problem? Well no one is home when she is dropped off so you just know there is going to be a bit of family drama there too!
Shay has a bit of a problem so he goes to Charlie's house to get some help and this is when Tock meets his 10 year old daughter for the first time. Let's just say they get along great!
You won't want to miss Tock's story if you've read the Honey Badger series. If you haven't then I recommend that you read them from the beginning. I really think that any person who loves shifter stories will want to read this series and all the other books Shelly Laurenston has written!
I really have to thank Shelly Laurenston for writing books because they have given me hours of entertainment I have truly enjoyed and Love! I can't wait to see what she writes next! And until the next book comes out I will be re-reading these books over and over!
Shelly Laurenston is my go-to author when I need a fun, humorous book, and boy, did she deliver. I love the Pride series, but the books with honey badgers take crazy to a new level. The MacKilligan sisters feature prominently again, though Tock, a basketball teammate of Max, is the FMC. Shay Malone, lion shifter, is the MMC.
This book contains everything I have grown to love from this series. There’s zany situations, laugh-out-loud moments, insane action, snarky banter and everyone being scared of Charlie. I had a smile on my face the whole time I was reading.
This was an excellent, well-written book. It was entertaining, snarky, fun, action packed and I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed this book and will continue to look out for more books by this author.
If you are looking for a story with strong female characters who know how to lay the smack-down on an unsuspecting male, then this is the one for you. Emily is a honey badger with a passion for timeliness and unexpectedly finds herself falling for a tiger. And not just any tiger, but one who has the most adorable daughter. The hi-jinx and shenanigans alone are worth the read. But the humour and the attention to family really cement the entertainment.
What happens when a laid back tiger shifter decides to mix things up with a kick but first and ask questions later honey badger? With Born to Be a Badger, you're about to find out. In book 5 of the Honey Badger Chronicles we get to know Emily "Tock" Lepstein-Jackson and Shay Malone. From the beginning there's a spark between the two which leads to a slow burn of fighting, fun, and little passion. We of course get to spend more time being entertained with the series favorites the MacKilligan sisters as well as the other over the top characters Ms Laurenston's books are known for which let's you know that you're in for pages and pages of action and laughter.
This is book 5 in the Honey Badger Chronicles, which is an off shoot of The Pride series. You don't have to read that series before reading this one, but I would recommend at least reading the previous books in this off shoot as they all are related. Emily “Tock” Meyerson-Jackson is on a mission to rid the world of shifters trafficking humans for hunting and cash. And now that she’s narrowed down her suspects to a brutal coalition of male lions, nothing will get between this honey badger and her prey—not even a dog-loving Tiger with absolutely no time management skills. Doesn’t matter that Shay Malone is ferociously adorable. With a war brewing between cat families, Tock doesn’t have time to lounge around with a football-playing tiger shifter. But when she realizes the coalition is also responsible for the death of Shay’s father, she’s forced to partner up with the flirtatious feline. Revenge is most definitely on the menu for Shay and his tiger shifter brothers. But when it comes to Shay’s alluring partner in crime-solving, so is seduction. Tock might be a bad-ass of a honey badger, but she’s awfully cute when she’s flashing her fangs, which she’s pretty much doing all the time these days. Good thing revenge is a dish best served hot. Because when it comes to Tock, Shay knows just how to turn up the heat.
I have loved this author's world of shifter's since the very first book. And this story in no way disappointed! Shay and Tock cracked me up from the beginning, but they also sucked me into their story and kept me reading from the get go. I loved how his daughter connected so much with Tock. I loved the inclusion of some new characters (which I hope just means more stories!!) along with a bigger plot. I wasn't expecting how this one ended, but it just makes me impatient for the next in the series! I can't wait to see where that story takes us!
I was so excited to read Born to Be Badger but at the same time a little part of me was worried. It has been two years since the last one in the series and my anticipation was so story, I was worried that the book couldn't stand up to that. I felt I was already doing the book a disserves by how much I needed this story.
I'll admit to you all I struggled with the first few chapters. I had trouble getting into Tocks voice. I have no clue why. I just so far removed from the series. Which is weird since I just read the whole series again right before this one. I ended up putting it down for the rest of the day and went back the next morning.
I'm so glad I did!
In the morning I was able to pick it up and get into it the way the book deserved. I fell into the story, and it was like being with old friends. Call me happy! I will say that in the prior books you get to understand Tock a bit, but nothing like in her own book. I was like, oh, more than once. I liked her before but really liked her in this one. She's got a sweetheart underneath of that badger-ness. The way she treated Shay's daughter is so sweet and kind. So not like a badger at all.
Let's talk Shay. He is a great daughter. He's so great with his daughter and you can tell how comfortable and loved she is. I also love how much Keane loves her. He is one closed off dud with tons of contradictions. Can't wait for his story.
This is an enjoyable story with many good funny moments. One of my favorites is with Max. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, so I won't say more but when you get to it, you'll find yourself laughing. This book moves on the boy's dad's storyline a much more than the prior book did and sets up the ending of that story perfectly. It should be a grand show by the badgers.
It might have started off slow for me, but it didn't end that way. I will next month read it again just so I can see if it was the book or me with the beginning. Those of us who love the badgers are in for a treat.
You know how there are books that you think are never going to end? This is NOT one of those books.
When I finished, my first thought was, “What do you mean it’s over?!” There wasn’t a cliffhanger or anything. I just wasn’t ready for the book to be finished.
Tock has never been one of my favorite badgers, but I learned to love her in this book. Although she is still obsessed with time, she has found other things to obsess over as well …, such as a certain tiger and his adorable daughter.
And that brings me to the best part/character in this book. Shay’s ten-years-old daughter Dani stole every scene she was in. I adore her. As far as I am concerned, she made the book. I can just see her covering her eyes and saying, “Oh, Daddy!” when Shay has disappointed her by being a tiger male.
I loved, loved, loved this book. I was lucky enough to score an early reviewer's copy and I have already read it three times. It’s just that good.
If you have spent any time in the Pride/Badger world, read this book. You will not regret it.
This book was sent to me by NetGalley in return for an honest review.
