I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This is a cute story about a girl named Poppy who wants to win a blue ribbon at the county fair with produce. Her best friend, Vincent Van Goat, eats her first crop, so she builds a fence to keep him out of her radishes. Unfortunately, those radishes just aren't quite good enough to win a prize. But she still leaves with a ribbon for her wonderful goat Vincent.
This book used really simple and easy sentences, making it great for an early reader. And I honestly kind of liked the twist that Poppy didn't win a ribbon for her produce in the end. The illustrations were really fun and colorful as well. Overall I give Blue Ribbon Radishes 4.0038 out of 5 stars.
A fun story about farm life and silly animals. My kids laughed at the story and enjoyed the pictures. A delightful early read.
Part of a set of very easy, very early readers, this has a girl frustrated by the goat she shares the family farm with. Intent on getting a crop ready for the county fair, the critter eats them. But surely her radishes will be of the rewarded, and roundly-recommended kind, right? The moral is to try again, and to not put all your happiness on one win when you've had fun trying for it, the 'twist' is obvious when it comes, and the surprise is this took two people to write. But it's a perfectly decent little entertainment, and we get the 'recipe' for growing our own radishes, too, so what's to dismiss here?
Thanks to NetGalley and its author for providing me with an advanced copy of this book

woah yesterday was the day of pub date. A goat, a girl and a radish. One day, a farm competition showed up to get the 1st place in any special vegetables or fruit, but something got sad on her.
i liked it but it wasn't my greatest book i read, nor the worst.
3.5
What a wonderful book this one! My son and I had a wonderful time reading this book about the little girl and her desire to win the blue ribbon. The book reminds us that it's more about our efforts than winning and is a great illustration of human animal relationships as well.
Suited for kids between 3 to 6
This is a sweet children’s book about a girl named poppy who enters a competition but doesn’t win the prize she was expecting. A good lesson on how we don’t always win and how sometimes not winning can lead to other surprises
Cute illustrations!
Another fun read with my toddler. I absolutely love reading to him and this was a fun one! I highly recommend to other parents of young kids!
Determination and perseverance don't win the day, but surprises are a wonderful thing!
The illustrations by Kristen Humphrey are simple, colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on PDF from Capstone/Picture Window Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

It delivers valuable lessons about the importance of effort and perseverance, emphasizing that to attain something, one must actively work towards it. The encouraging message of never giving up and always trying resonates well, making it a commendable choice for young readers. Overall, it stands out as a positive and impactful children's book.
I extend my gratitude to Capstone and NetGalley for granting me access to this lovely e-arc.
Winning isn’t everything. Poppy enters her radishes at the county fair, but gets a prize she wasn’t expecting.
An adorable, colorfully illustrated book about how the unexpected things that happen, can be for the better. This book includes definitions for hard words, and how to grow your own vegetables. A good read for anyone.
This was a wonderful early chapter book about a girl overcoming obstacles. I really liked the fact that she had to change her plan mid way through and that it wasn't the basic happy ending most books end with. The pictures were a great addition to the story and I could see this being a book that I purchase for our school library.
This is the cutest book! This would be good for a read aloud in a classroom, book read by parents, or for a child has been reading early chapter books.
Blue-Ribbon Radishes is a delightful early chapter book that depicts a girl growing up in a rural setting. The girl, Poppy is excited to enter the cucumbers she's grown in the County Fair's contest. I loved the characters and the writing. The twist at the end was really fun. I just have one problem with the story and this may be a spoiler alert but as a farm girl who has taken 4-H projects to the fair, there is one thing I know for sure. No one would bring their pet goat to the fair and leave it, unattended and unidentified, in the goat pen at the fair. I'm pretty sure other farm kids would know that as well. Maybe the audience for this story wouldn't care. They would just love the surprise ending. Maybe it's just my adult brain that is having a hard time suspending disbelief. I loved everything else about the book, but that one plot point is a stumbling block for me. I will watch for more books in this series because I definitely want to see how the series develops.
This is a cute story of a determined young lady! This book can be enjoyed by early chapter book readers and adults. The illustrations go with the text beautifully. I would recommend to anyone that wants to share a love of gardening with young people.
Thank you so much to Capstone/ Picture Windows and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Poppy wants nothing more than to win a blue ribbon at the fair, but everything she grows Vincent her best friend and goat eats it, destroying all her hard work. This time she won’t let him eat her radishes at all so she can win her blue ribbon.
I loved this so much it was adorable, I loved that Vincent was so mischievous and he kept getting into everything as goats do, he was so curious and always munching away. Poppy was super sweet and dreamt of one day having her very own blue ribbon and wanted to put in lots of hard work so she could.
I really adored the little twist at the end, I actually didn’t predict that was what would happen so it was very sweet to see. I liked the lessons within the book, that hard work will pay off, you don’t have to win to know you’ve done a good job, life can give you something you want in an unexpected way. I loved those sweet little lessons that were included but didn’t feel like learning they were just included within the story.
The illustrations were super stunning and I loved seeing all the animals and the farm, and all the veggies and obviously little rascal Vincent and his sneaking round to munch. So cute to look at on each page, so adorable.
I really enjoyed the extra information at the end, with the glossary, the lessons on how to grow you own vegetables which I love as this is a perfect book to help get a child into growing their own food, it’s a fun easy and exciting thing to do with your children as they can learn a lot whilst doing it. I do recommend this book it’s lots of fun, is really adorable and has lots to teach a young child but in an easy and fun way. They will love Vincent too.
Blue-Ribbon Radishes is an adorable book. My son and I both really enjoyed reading it! The illustrations are fun and the text engaging. The book has a great message for young readers too. Highly recommend for children learning to read short chapter books.
This looked like such a sweet little series, so I was excited to read this. The artwork is adorable. I'm familiar with Derting and Johannes from the Cece Loves Science series, which translated really well for a beginning reader audience. This new series is also perfect for readers that are ready to start simple paragraphs. I also liked the message in this book about being proud of yourself, win or lose. Fans of the Cece Loves Science and Libby Wimbley series will likely enjoy this new series.
Poppy lives on a farm with her family & her goat-Vincent Van Goat. Poppy is growing cucumbers to take to the fair for competition. Unfortunately, Vincent has other ideas-he eats them. Poppy gets discouraged, but decides she has enough time to grow radishes to take to the fair. She is a bit sad when her radishes don’t win a prize, but quite unexpectedly Vincent wins a prize.
I loved the story! The chapters were just right for an early beginning chapter book. The illustrations was great. I love how it had directions for growing radishes at the end. It also had a glossary (which was a nice surprise). Can’t wait to get this for my first grade classroom!!
Blue-Ribbon Radishes is a fun journey with Poppy, a young girl who lives on a farm, and her trip to the country fair. She wants to win a blue ribbon for her cucumbers this year, but her goat Vincent Van Goat ate them all up! She decides to grow radishes, because there's not enough time to grow new cucumbers. At the fair, she is disappointed that her vegetables don't win a blue ribbon. However, Vincent Van Goat ended up getting a blue ribbon, so Poppy was happy for her friend.
Poppy got to learn the value of being proud of yourself for the hard work you did, instead of focusing on winning. This is a great lesson for kids to learn. I loved the illustrations in this book. So much fun!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
With cute illustrations and an even cuter story I am sure kids will love this. The addition of how to grow your own radishes at the end was the cutest touch. It's important for children to learn that they might not always win, but that does not mean they should be discouraged.
