Simply splendid audiobook! The narrator did a wonderful job with all the main characters but I dearly loved his Rufus.

A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel is the sequel to KJ Charles’s book The Secret Life Of Country Gentlemen. The story picks up 13 years later and follow Luke Doomsday, a very memorable side character from that book. It also introduces Rufus d’Aumesty, the new Earl of Oxney.

The story is full of intrigue and conflict, subterfuge and family secrets. The plot is interesting, the characters engaging and unique, the story riveting, and the romance steamy.

Great audiobook! My thanks to NetGalley, the published and the audio company for this audio ARC!

13 years after the events of the previous Doomsday book, Rufus finds himself the unexpected Earl of Oxney only to have his uncle provide Luke Doomsday as the possible actual Earl. Luke has no desire to become Earl, but is interested in a working as Rufus’s secretary. The two become close while working together while also trying to figure out the inheritance situation as well as some family secrets, and begin a love affair (I should emphasize that the two are not blood relations). Secrets and perceived betrayal tear the two apart before they are able to come back together again.

I really enjoy KJ Charles books, but she writes on a reading level that is higher than I’m used to. For this reason, I really like the audiobooks of this series as they keep me from being bogged down in the large words and high word count. It was very fun to see Gareth and Joss again, and we were introduced to Luke in the previous book as a young kid. I really enjoyed Luke and Rufus together and felt their heat and connection. I also liked Rufus’s ridiculous family (specifically his cousins). The whole cast of characters came together in a way that everyone was very distinct and served their purpose. I am looking forward to the next book in the series should there be one.

As noted above, I did listen to the audiobook and found Martyn Swain to be a great narrator. I could always tell who was speaking to the point that there were times in the begining that I actually thought there were two narrators. I definitely would not have enjoyed the book as much without the audiobook.

Thank you to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Casablanca, and Dreamscape Media for the ARC and ALC in exchange for honest reviews.

this was fantastic; it had Charles’ usual wit, glorious sex scenes, and lovable characters. i loved the secret Luke revealed towards the end and as always, found the reconciliation after the third act breakup sappy, delightful, and worth the wait.

rep: gay men, queer women, dyslexia rep

spice: several detailed sex scenes

tw: discussion of childhood trauma, facial scarring, POW character

I found this book to be really engaging and I loved the premise. I'm a sucker for historic and queer romance so this story was right up my alley. I am looking forward to reading other books by the author.

I didn’t enjoy or follow along with these characters at all, I’d miss this one I think if you really loved book 1

Overall rating: 4.3⭐

I read The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen just last month, and as soon as I was done, I requested this audiobook on NetGalley. K.J. Charles writes MLM historical romance deliciously. The romance, the intrigue, the tension, the chemistry… Her writing pulls you in with great descriptions of its settings, loveable characters, just kiss already vibes, and soon you lose herself in her story.

I highly recommend reading both of the books, even if you don’t usually read historical romances. I don’t read much histrom either, but these two were some of the top romances of the year for me. I read both in one sitting.

ANGTSAS is set in the same world as TSLOCG, only 13 years later, with Luke Doomsday as one of the two main characters. Both of the books involve a person whose life suddenly changes thanks to an inheritance, and a member of the Doomsdays, a family of smugglers in Kent. Despite having a similar premise on the surface, ANGTSAS has a completely different feel and dynamic, while keeping the adorable-ness and spiciness the same.

I loved the relationship between Rufus and Luke. I loved how they cared for each other, all the tension and chemistry between them, how they both change and grow. Luke’s emotional journey was especially well done. Their relationship starts so unsure but over time really grows to be strong where they can trust and rely on each other. And the spice..! 🥵It’s impossible not to love the two together.

I don’t know if this is the norm for all histroms, it has at least been true for all the ones I’ve read, but they seem to include some intrigue and/or adventure. Those aspects were very enjoyable in this as well. There are some edge of your seat moments, the villains are vile but believable and parts where you’re trying to figure out WTH these characters are doing/thinking.

The narrator does a fantastic job with all the accents. I especially enjoyed how they portrayed Luke’s accent slipping to Kentish at times. And they do a great job with the spicy scenes too!

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the eARC!

This was such a great addition to the Doomsday series - I loved reading Luke's story and getting glimpses of the characters from the first book! The marsh setting is great, and I sooo hope we get the painter's story next, cause that would be so fun. And as always I loved the audiobook. 4.5 rounded up!

🌈 Queer rep: MM gay main relationship, MM side relationship

I loved getting the chance to go back into this universe and was so excited to revisit characters we left behind. This was such a thrilling read I loved all the different twists and turns and I really liked the way this book ended!

An excellent book 2 for KJ Charles' Doomsday series!

While I enjoyed the first book in this set I have the say the second was even better! I loved catching up with a grown up Luke and felt the plot was much richer in this one with many layers to it overall. I enjoyed Rufus as a no-nonsense type of man coming in to his own as a newly found Early and his relationship with Luke was both spicy but sweet.

A lovely companion to the first book! I absolutely adore Kj Charles’ commentary on class and business in relation to the past in these books! Both characters were as lovable as can be and I really enjoyed the plot here! It was quite a spicy one and the romance was lovely too! Another 5 star historical Gay fiction read! Wonderful book!

This book was pretty fun and sexy. I don't think you really had to have read the first, as I hadn't and don't feel I missed much. A quick historical romance read.

The second in the Doomsday Series, this historical set romance was a lot of fun. I am not the biggest fan of historical romance but I still enjoyed this one a lot. I’ve read quite a bit of historical romance this month. Weird. I liked this book more than the first in the series and it is beneficial to have read the first book as this plot is a continuation of events from the first book.
I liked Luke and Rufus together and they both brought unique personalities to the story. Both books are heavily intertwined with characters from the first having a decent sized role in the second.

I listened to the audiobook and found it very enjoyable. The narrator was good and the chapter titles helped distinguish which character was featured in each chapter. The narrator narrates the first book in the series as well. I listen at an increased speed and the narration didn’t get warped or distorted even with the British accent which was great.

This series is fun and not high stakes but still holds intrigue and suspense at times.

Oh my goodness, I loved this book. I loved it more than the first Doomsday book, though it had quite a different feel to it, imo.

I’ve had time to sit with this book, and I’m still not sure how to properly review it? I don’t entirely know what to say.

It takes place 13 years after The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, and I was thrilled to see some cameos from some of the characters in that book. This one is about Luke, or Goldie, and as far as KJC books goes, it had a rather slow burn quality to it, though not in terms of the romantic relationship, but in terms of the action/adventure aspect of it. I’m used to her books just kind of dumping you right into the action pretty quickly, but that wasn’t the case with this one. And while it was very different, I really liked it.

Also, Luke reads gothic novels?!? *swoon*

I sort of feel like I can’t say much else about the book without giving more away, so I think I will just leave it here.

Loved this installment even more than the first. It reads beautifully as a sequel since the stories connect so well, but as a stand-alone it also holds its own. It’s incredibly romantic, wildly tense and dramatic, and the dynamic between the two leads can’t be described in any other way but *chef’s kiss*. The mystery of this book was intriguing and unpredictable, and woven skillfully through the book. It was well-balanced with the romance, and I enjoyed the tension as these two characters got closer. I liked Luke and Rufus on their own and loved them in their relationship. The way they understand each other, the things they do for each other, the ways they heal parts of themselves being together. It was just lovely. KJ Charles delivered a novel with complex characters who manage to find each other in a complex world. There are secrets, horrible family members, found family and a bunch of more and less lovable characters. And I was there for all of it. Great book. It was a blast and I will definitely be checking out the author’s other work.
Last but not least, I listened to an audio version of this book and Martyn Swain did a great job! I enjoyed it. It really was an amazing read!

This was a gorgeous sequel to KJ Charles' The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen. Set 13 years after the events of the first book, A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel follows the life of Rufus d'Aumesty and a now grown up Luke Doomsday. As with any KJ Charles book, it contained a fast paced plot and sizzling chemistry between the two leads. It was truly a joy to read.

The audiobook was a delight to read. Martyn Swain does a fantastic job in bringing these characters to life. If you're a fan of queer historical romances then I will always recommend KJ Charles' books.

Gosh KJ Charles put out an equally fantastic second book. I loved the The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and I may love this one just as much, if not more. Rufus is just the sweetest I want all the best for him. Again, I love that this book allowed its characters to express their feelings. Even when there was hurt and secrets they were addressed and talked about at some point. I loved all of the events and the story was smartly paced. And whew there were some real spicy bits. Martyn Swain is an incredible narrator. He carried so much weight in his voice for the emotional moments and humor and heart for the light ones. I could read about this marsh forever please keep the stories coming. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Audio review: the narrator does a good job conveying the meaning of the text, has a pleasant voice and is great at the character voices. He still has this odd habit of pausing a lot in odd places, but it seemed a lot less egregious than in the first book.

This was a fine, fun story. The real strength is the fun historical details. I sure learned about aristocratic inheritance law. The relationship was nice and sweet.

But as a sequel it didn’t really live up to my admittedly very excited expectations. Luke, from the mischievous sneaky child with trauma in the first book, was pretty bland in comparison here. I was expecting grand plots and well, there were but they weren’t very grand or clever and most of the work and revelations were already done offscreen before the book started, and the characters weren’t even interested in the end game by the end.

Rufus’ horrible relatives were already defeated in court as the book starts and while they continue to be horrible throughout the book, instead of caring i just kept wondering why on earth he was putting up with it in the first place.

And the romance is fine and nice enough, they are very kind and sweet to each other. but it just didn’t have the intensity and drama of Garett and Joss by comparison. They go from mildly attracted coworkers to mind blowing sex and really unexpected levels of emotional commitment and there just wasn’t enough of a foundation for me to buy it.

Not to mention the doomsdays as a family, who were so fascinating and vibrant in the first book, barely appear in this one. Especially with Luke talking about how he has unresolved issues with the rest of the family and then…never really resolving them. There was a lot of telling rather than showing in general, like Luke talks about his issues with the family but we never see that on screen because we don’t see him interact with them.

It is a perfectly enjoyable book but not the authors best

Another great KJ Charles book!

I have to admit I got confused at times about who was who and who was allegedly married to whom. I was listening, which I don't usually do a first time through a book.

I felt the first third or so dragged a bit, but the payoff of the rest of the book was well worth it.

And Luke is way too sweet to be tricking everyone like that...

Overall, I'd say 4.5/5

A sequel to The Secret Lives of Country Gentleman, this one tells us the story of Luke and Rufus. Charles weaves another interesting story with several love scenes and justice dished out. We get to check in with Joss and Gareth and learn a bit more about the story in the first book from Luke's point of view. These are good books set in Romney Marsh during the Regency period.
