Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me early access to Maybe Meant to Be audiobook. However, my opinions are my own.
Maybe Meant to Be is a heartfelt coming-of-age novel about Sage and Charlie. They are both fighting their own battles before they graduate high school. Most of their peers think that Sage and Charlie are meant to be together. They must navigate their paths to find out who they are and what they want most. I enjoyed the friendship between Sage and Charlie.
The main reason that I gave this book only three stars is because I felt like we only got a slight insight into the two main characters. I would have loved to understand them more deeply. I felt very detached from the characters.

Maybe Meant to Be was a different kind of romance book. I loved the different idea but felt some parts of it were a little on the boring side.
In the eyes of everyone, Sage and Christopher are meant to be. They are best friends and only friends. They both have a secret from everyone. Sage likes Christopher's twin brother Nick and Christopher likes the new kid at school Luke. I can’t stress enough how much I loved that this was not a typical friends to lovers story, I just wish some of the plot points were a little more interesting.
The book seemed to keep repeating itself with its scenarios. Sage would sneak around with Nick and Christopher would sneak around with Luke.
Luke and Christopher's relationship was a little hard for me to get on board with. Christopher was not out and Luke was. Christopher wanted to continue to sneak around while Luke wanted it out in the open. Luke forced Christopher to come out and tell his family. No one should be forced to tell their story and I hate that this happened.
I recommend this book for a lot of reasons but mainly because it is such a different story than we usually get. I like it when people take chances and I feel like while this story missed the mark, it was overall still a great experience.
I started listening to this and wondered why the book felt so familiar and then I figured out this is a book the author already published that I read a few years ago with a new name and cover. Why is that not mentioned in the book description…
The book is decent though I just have no desire to re read it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audiobook arc!
Sage has been best friends with Charlie since childhood, and everyone at their boarding school knows that the two will always chose each other over anyone else. Due to their closeness, everyone assumes that they’re secretly in love and will one day profess their feelings for each other and finally be together. Except, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Sage and Charlie’s twin brother, Nick, have feelings for each other-only no one knows about it. Due to trauma from her parents’ divorce, Sage is very hesitant to get serious with anyone at a young age. As they explore their feelings for each other, Sage asks Nick to keep it a secret- which creates its own set of doubts and complications. Sage feels like she and Nick are meant to be…just not right now.
Meanwhile, Charlie is struggling as he learns more about his feelings and being himself. Everyone has set expectations of Charlie- he’s the top in his class, he’s a “chick magnet,” and he always has a different girlfriend. None of his relationships seem to last more than 4 weeks, but no one would expect the real reason why. When Charlie meets Luke, the new guy on campus, he starts to have some new feelings that he’s not sure what to do with. As the two friends move into territory that’s something more, Charlie finds himself struggling to continue pretending to be someone that he’s not-but he’s also scared to be himself.
This novel was an enjoyable read over my Labor Day weekend. I liked the loyalty between friends that was displayed, which can be rare in the real world. I also thought it was great to see Sage and Charlie discover things about themselves, each other and how to let go of fears to do what makes them happy. I think this book has a great message for young adults who may be struggling with being their true selves or those who feel confined to living up to the expectations of others. This would also be a good read for high school seniors getting ready to go to college, as college is a great opportunity to grow into yourself and show who you really are.
Everyone believes Sage and Charlie are meant to be. Charlie is constantly dating someone new, and Sage has never had a real relationship, their friends and family think it's only a matter of time before they realize they are in love. But when Luke shows up at school, his presence shakes things up. Charlie and Luke are into each other and that gives Sage the opportunity to spend time with Charlie's twin brother, Nick.
I received Maybe Meant to Be as an audiobook ARC and it was a fast listen. Overall, I would say I found it to be enjoyable, some parts more than others. The romance is messy, as most high school relationships are, but in the most relatable way. I thought the narrator did a great job telling the story and I will continue to read books by K.L. Walther.
Thank you NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the ARC and the chance to listen and review it honestly.
Happy reading!
I have enjoyed other books by this author so I was excited this new one. It became a little character overwhelming for me though. I liked the characters but their story lines got me mixed up and sometimes felt chaotic. I enjoyed the storyline and the paths the chatacters were exploring
* I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this book. All thoughts are my own.
This was a really good YA book. I listened to the audio and really liked the characters. I really liked the different relationships (friend and romantic) throughout the book.
I would definitely recommend it to a younger (teen) audience.
There is so much encouragement in this story to be who you're meant to be and to accept others as they're meant be. I loved the growth and development among the characters and the friendships and relationships that came out of it. The audiobook is a joy to listen to and very well done. Everyone should read this book.
A messy, heartfelt coming of age YA story about a group of seniors living at an elite New England boarding school and their intertwined relationships. Sage has been best friends with Charlie forever and everything thinks she'll end up marrying him but what they don't know is that he's secretly gay and afraid to come out to his parents and twin brother.
To make things even more complicated, Sage finds herself falling for Charlie's twin brother, despite never wanting a serious relationship before she gets a chance to live her life out in the real world. Full of drama, secrets and a TON of heart. This was great on audio told from multiple POVs and narrated by Alexa Elmy and Graham Halstead and I think my favorite book so far from this author!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for early access to digital and audio copies in exchange for my honest review!
CW: homophobia
Uhhh it was fine. I really loved Summer of Broken Rules and What Happens After Midnight. I was hoping for another sweet romance with some ANGST. This was more ANGST and was missing the sweet romance part-really dramatic.
Set at a boarding school. Sage and Charlie are known as the couple that are MFEO but just aren’t together? Maybe someday but really they have their eyes on different people and are too afraid for different reasons to really commit.
I think my biggest issue was I didn’t really care for any of the characters and wasn’t really invested in what they were up to.
I definitely will check out other stuff by this author because their other books are really good.
Thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for an Advanced Listening copy.
Walther writes endearing characters and cozy stories set at boarding schools so well (I loved What Happens After Midnight), and I couldn’t wait to dive into this story of friendship and love. Unfortunately, it was a miss for me.
While this was cute, I thought it lacked focus and had a slightly chaotic pace. The book dove head first into drama within a group of friends, but without any backstory on or intro for the characters, I spent most of the time confused about what was going on. Navigating multiple POVs can be challenging if they aren’t distinct and truthfully, I couldn’t keep each storyline straight and it all blended together. I personally felt like I spent my entire time reading playing catch-up. There also wasn’t much in the way of establishing the setting - the story was more character focused with a flimsy plot.
I did enjoy the dual narration and thought the narrators did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.
This had lots of potential with its boarding school setting and fun friend group, but the lack of structure, character development, and overall background impacted my reading and it didn’t come together for me.
Starting September off on the right foot? Read Maybe meant to be by K.L. Walther. This book has the fall vibes I love, plus it's full of Taylor Swift references.
Everyone at Bexley School believes that Sage and Charlie are meant to be together. Although Charlie seems to have a new girlfriend every month and Sage has never been in a real relationship, their friends and family know it is only a matter of time before they realize they are really in love. When Luke shows up on campus, his presence immediately shakes things up. Charlie and Luke are attracted to each other the moment they meet, giving Sage the opportunity to spend time with Charlie's twin brother Nick.
I have previously read a novel by the author, namely The Summer of Broken Rules, and in its simplicity, I loved it. This book was no different.
Smooth writing, enjoyable to read, that does not tire.
The interweavings of the main characters are clear and sharp with each other, not entangling or confusing to the reader.
I appreciated the subtlety with which it deals with some issues, which in this day and age still cause discussion. At least in Italy.
I am glad I discovered Walther's books, because now I am not going to miss any releases.
