This wasn’t my favorite. It had a solid premise and was executed in a way that made sense but the suspense for me wasn’t there. I thought it was super predictable to the point that it made it less than interesting. While it did allow for a bit of suspense, it wasn’t up to par with others I’ve read that are similar.
Great locked room mystery - nothing crazy surprising but it was an enjoyable read that moved fairly quickly.
I've actually listened to this book twice now as I forgot to review it the first time. Both times were awesome.
The characters and all their flaws are unpacked slowly, each layer of this plot showing us that even those closest to us have secrets. There is deceit, lies, and murder. But there is also redemption.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my advance copy of this audiobook
Thank you to NetGalley for this copy of The Cliff House!
Chris Brookmyre had me on the edge of my seat and surprised me with every turn. He creates a spooky locked-room hen party thriller that takes place in a luxury Cliff hours on a Scottish island. This thriller is full of twists, and is great for fans of Ruth Ware and Agatha Christie.
I had a fun time reading this one. It was super atmospheric and a good time.I will be reading more from this author.
One of my favorite thriller tropes is when a group of friends gather in an isolated setting. Then a murder occurs that slowly reveals secrets that each friend is keeping and why each could be the murderer. This book had that as well as a friend that went missing. As the remaining group comes together to figure out what is happening and where their missing friend is, the secrets begin to reveal themselves.
This was a good thriller, but lacked wow factor for me. The story moved a bit slow and the secrets weren't very dark and mysterious.
In fairness, my preference is a fast paced thriller with dark and messed up people doing dark and messed up things. If you prefer a thriller that is not super dark, this is a great read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC of "The Cliff House" by Chris Brookmyre. I really liked the premise, a bridesmaid getaway with a mysterty to boot! It just fell a little short for me. I couldn't keep up with all of the different points of view. Perhaps reading it would have been a better experience. It was just OK for me.
The Cliff House by Chris Brookmyre was the first book I’ve read by the author and wow it was so good. Cliff House starts off strong and keeps a steady pace throughout the book. This book kept my attention and I could not put it down. I give this book 3.75 but will round it up to 4.
Thank you so much NetGalley and publishers for letting me enjoy this ARC audio! It was a great book to listen to while I was driving to work. Definitely kept my attention from the start! I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good mystery that’ll keep you guessing until the very end!
This is the first book I have listened to by Chris Brookmyre but it won't be my last. I really enjoyed the narrator Sarah Barron. I thought she did a great job telling this story. The characters were really well written. There are some twists you see coming and a few you don't. This book will keep you wanting more. I definitely recommend this secluded island thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for allowing me to listen to this ARC for my honest opinion.
The Cliff House is a great whodunit that will have you guessing until the very end. This is a great read for the beach or a rainy day by the fire. Entertaining and thoroughly engrossing. I enjoyed every second of this great thriller.
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
WOW! Everyone has secrets and these women have more/darker secrets than most people! This was a gripping read that I couldn't put down until we figured out who was behind it! I do love a redemption story and this book has quite a bit of it! This was my 1st book by Chris Bookmyre but will not be my last!

The Cliff House is the perfect beach read or travel book. Not only does it grab your attention early and hold it, but it doesn't introduce a lot of new characters to keep track of. There are well-placed twists that kept me interested until the final page. This is my first Chris Brookmyre, but now I'm on a search for backlist books. Thanks for the opportunity to read early and review!
This was anything but your average secluded on an exclusive private island type of book…it was much more sinister☠️ and fullll of some big secrets!
This book gave me “The Menu” (movie, 2022) meets an Agatha Christie novel vibes that results in a very eventful never to be forgotten bachelorette party!!
The twists and turns may have been slightly predictable (at times) and I may have screamed when a character(s) didn’t do what I would do in that situation🤭, but all in all, I had a super fun and adventure laden listening experience!!
Ps: I think the narrator of this audiobook is my favorite narrator to date!!! And I’ve listened to A LOT of audiobooks just this year alone
3.75⭐️

Special thanks to @highbridgeaudio and @recordedbooks for the ALC for reviewing purposes!!!
Thank you to Net galley for this ALC and to the author Chris Brookmyre.
This was my first book by this author, so I am without a comparison. As I prepared my review, it appears that he has other books that were more favorable so I will definitely give him another try. This book however fell flat for me. Hen weekend in Scotland at a location that appears to have all the necessities for celebration and relaxation but of course there are secrets and drama. I would compare this to The Guest List but it lacked in the easy to follow along department. I found the story to be confusing, the characters to be somewhat immature and the story to be unbelievable. I saw that others enjoyed it, so it may just be his writing style for me.
A solid addition to the And Then There Were None retellings. A recommended purchase for collections where crime and thrillers are popular.
The Cliff House by Chris Brookmyre. This book had A LOT of characters. It was really hard to keep everyone straight at first and there were times were it was super confusing. By the end, I had most of the story and characters straight. I really enjoyed the ending. While I wouldn't consider this a 5 star read, I was happy I read it. Thanks NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for the ARC.
A hen night where everyone has a secret? Sign me up! Told from multiple points of view, Brookmyre's novel introduces us to all the attendees of Jenn's hen night on an isolated island. Each has a secret of their own. However, they quickly discover that someone is intent on sharing one of these secrets. I am obsessed with storylines set in an isolated place and The Cliff House did not disappoint. I felt that we got to know each of the characters, with all their flaws. Some of the twists were a bit predictable but some caught me off-guard. I absolutely relished in the final confrontation with the the one behind everything, but can't reveal more without spoiling! The narrator did a great job making this one come alive.
Seven friends rent a house on a remote Scottish island for a bachelorette (hen) weekend. They think they are in for seventy-two hours of bliss. However, they quickly realize this is not the case when one of their friends disappears. Then, they receive a message that their missing friend will be killed if one of them doesn’t tell her deepest, darkest secret.
Right from the start, we are introduced to lots of characters. I found it hard to keep the characters' backstories straight. With so many different perspectives, I felt it was hard to distinguish which viewpoint we were on in the audiobook at times. Also, I didn’t feel completely attached to any of the characters. Although it was a fast listen, I found that at times it lacked the excitement and anticipation you come to expect from a thriller. However, the ending really wrapped everything up and was satisfying. For these reasons, I give it 3/5 stars.
3.5 stars
During a hen weekend at a remote exclusive island retreat, the chef is murdered, and one of them is kidnapped, but which of the women's terrible secrets are the cause? Every one of them has at least one. But who can they trust among them? How well do they really know each other? And will they get off of the island alive?
This book definitely covered some tough topics such as domestic violence. But in a compassionate way, which I appreciated.
Bitty was insufferable for most of the book I wanted to throat-punch her. But she did finally get her head out of her bum. Thankfully in time as well. Though to be honest most of the women weren't very likable.
I never trusted any of them, to be honest. I also guessed at some of the twists. As for who was behind it, I had two guesses and one of them was partly right.
Overall, it was a decent thriller but a bit predictable.
