This book is said to be a standalone and I’ll have to disagree. While it is an individual romance for Gideon and Eva, and she does have her own adventure as the main plot of the story, it does directly tie into Maisy & Rhys from the first book and will be a part of the next story as well. As an interconnected book, readers should not start here to truly enjoy it. (I think that will help with a decent amount of the negative reviews.)
As a returning reader, I enjoyed getting to continue in this intriguing world that Barth has created – full of mythical creatures and a battle between good & evil. Her three heroes are great together, thru a shared traumatic past they have created a family. One that is slowly expanding as they meet and fall in love with strong women. It’s fun seeing these big, tough soldiers fall in love and learn to open up & share their lives with more than just each other.
Of the three, Gideon is the more outgoing and flirty. He’s working his way through the female population of both the normal and supernatural world … until he comes face to face with one that is not impressed by his charm. Some are not going to enjoy his attitude, but having gotten to know him before and then having his history laid out in this story it definitely becomes a lot more understandable.
Eva grew up as an entity of good in hell, which made her childhood … difficult. All she’s wanted is to get out and become normal, and now is her chance. She just needs to work with Gideon and the other Nephilim but something more is going on than they would ever have guessed. Add in an unwanted attraction to the playboy she’s been paired with, who has more going on than she would have ever guessed, and things quickly become very complicated
These guys have not had it easy (especially Zavier – and I cannot wait for his story!) but they still have big hearts and a deep seated need to protect. It makes for fun interactions as they start to realize that those big hearts have been stolen by spunky women with smarts, attitude, and guts. (Seriously, I cannot wait to get the last book!) It all happens in a world filled with angels & demons, mythical creatures, and Lucifer as the most fabulous, and proud, grandfather. I’m not 100% on my religion & mythology but I think that Barth does a good job of creating a complicated world full of all sorts of interesting creatures. And I can’t wait to see how she wraps it up. (Did I say that already? Well, I can’t.)
This book proved to be a captivating and thrilling romantic adventure! Eva, a former dark angel now working as an actuary, has made a daring escape from Hell to embrace life in the human world. Her journey takes a fascinating turn when she's tasked with conducting a risk analysis for a shipping company run by three irresistibly handsome half-angels. Yet, tensions flare as she butts heads with one of the partners, Gideon. Together, they find themselves in an unexpected alliance, fighting to avert an apocalyptic catastrophe.
I found the witty banter between the main characters to be both delightful and humorously entertaining. It lent a playful touch to the story, while seamlessly weaving in the classic enemies-to-lovers theme. This book delivers a perfect blend of romance, action, intrigue, and a clash of good versus evil in a battle to save the world.
3.5 stars
I went into this book not knowing it was book 2 in a series. I want to read book one, but do not feel like I was missing anything.
There is a ton of banter and supernatural elements to the story, but what can you expect when the MMC is half angel and the FMC is a dark Angel. And both characters live in Buffalo, NY.
Gideon lives life to the fullest while putting on a front in order to stop from being hurt again. And Evangeline isn’t really living her life, trying to be safe and ending up bored. I enjoyed the transitions from antagonistic, to reluctant allies, to lovers. The two really got to know each other and peel back the layers before getting together. I loved the mix in of suspense of the characters trying to solve a case and getting more than they bargained for. The development of the paranormal aspects and the relationship felt well done and not too fast.
I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to anyone wanting a little paranormal in their romances.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the early read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As each story in Barth's Unlocking His Heart series progresses, I end up loving the characters more and more, and Hell of an Angel was no exception. Between Eva's complicated feelings about her dark angel power, Gideon's character development, and the return of all my favorite characters from the first book, I ended up enjoying this story from start to finish and had a hard time putting it down.
I loved Eva's character arc throughout this book. What started as a plan to rid herself of her dark angel power and become fully human ended up being a much more complicated story about self-discovery and acceptance. While not quite as complex, Gideon certainly had quite a bit of character development as well as he set his sights on Eva and reevaluated his goals in life.
I loved the Nephilim-fueled plot of Imperfect Angel, and I loved how Barth built on that world and expanded on it in this book. I found Barth's writing to be engaging, with just the right balance between action and character arc. I loved the larger plot involving the potential apocalypse, and I can't wait to see what impact the first two books' plots will have on the next story. Gideon and Eva had a fun, entertaining story, and I can't wait to see what's coming for the third and final Nephilim in Christi Barth's Unlocking His Heart series.
Christi Barth write such FUN romance books. I know this is book 2 of a series, but they are completely stand alone books and I have not read book 1. I loved the premise of evil and goodness working together and especially loved the chemistry and BANTER between the two main characters. I laughed and blushed and generally had a ball reading this book. It is perfect for spooky paranormal fun!
Hell of an Angel is perfect for lovers of the TV shows Supernatural and Lucifer, and for anyone who loves angel/demon mythology.
This story follows Evangeline, a dark Angel, who is a descendant of Lucifer in Hell, and 3 Nephilim soldiers- Gideon, Zavier, and Rhys. Eva had a choice in becoming good or evil, and became a good dark angel. But she has a power that some deem dangerous and she feels is worthless. She left Hell to come to Earth and lie low, play at being human. She meets the Nephilim soldiers by accident when she lands their business account as their actuary.
Gideon is a rakish playboy. He hasn’t tried to hide that he sees women as a fun time, and he has no time for a relationship. But Eva makes him start to question his self imposed rules.
When they are asked to help find whoever is killing Keepers and their Nephilim protectors, they are thrown into a conspiracy that has them questioning everything they know about good and evil.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I thought Evangeline and Gideon's story was fun, cute and clever. Lots of witty banter, spicy sparks, thrilling action, juicy drama, edge of your seat suspense and jaw on the floor twists pull you in quickly and easily and have sitting pretty in your happy reading place.
When you don't know if you should root for the hero or the villain or really who's good and who's bad root for the dark angel and love.
I fell in love with these characters, I rooted for them, I cried for them, and when it was over I needed more of them.
I've read plenty of books about starcrossed lovers, angels falling in love with humans, demigods trying to change the course of the world, and the destruction that can happen when the powers that be aren't happy, this book blows away everything I've read before and I'm so happy about it.
I'm not going to say much other than read this book, it is the perfect combination of fantasy and reality, the perfect way to question what's good and what's evil, and the perfect way to tell Evangeline's story.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this E-Book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I struggled with some of the references to the previous book, even though this is marketed as a stand-alone. I did not read the first book and there are so many little things in this one that seem to reference what has already happened in the previously.
The world building is explained somewhat but it comes across as an info dump to me.
Honestly, I didn't really like either of the main characters, they were both annoying and lacked a believable connection.
Thank you Netgalley, Entangled Publishing, and Christi Barth for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Hell of an Angel was the perfect vacation/airplane read for me-I read it over a few days during a trip to and from my sister’s house in another state. It had a great storyline, and was probably the most unique take on an angel/demon/supernatural romance I have read in quite some time. Evangeline and Gideon have the most delicious tension from the very beginning and it continues to grow and get hotter and hotter as the story goes on. This is my first book by this author, and the first I’ve read in this series but I’m definitely looking forward to reading more.
Hell of an Angel is the second part in the Unlocking his heart series by Christi Barth. This series is made out of standalones. I haven't read the first part called Imperfect Angel but was really curious about this book. It is a fantasy romance featuring angels and nephilim. What will this book bring?
Raised in Hell. Living in Buffalo. And on the verge of accidentally destroying both realms…
Evangeline hates taking unnecessary risks, but really wants to become human. She is a dark angel with useless powers and wings she can't fly with. She is bullied by all the creatures in Hell and could really use help with unlocking her powers. Gideon is a nephilim who is fighting demons for a long time and he could really use the help of an angel with his next mission. He reaches out to Evangeline and she agrees to help him if he helps her. Now with good and evil working together, there might be even more to achieve. They need to stop the threat who is trying to unleash the apocalypse, but they also can't ignore the attraction to one another. Can they stop the evil threat? Will they be able to keep their feelings aside or will the sparks be flying?
Hell of an Angel is a really nice read. The story is an easy-read with a slow building romance and lots of plottwists. In addition this book will take you all across the world to visit the most magical places.
Both Evangeline and Gideon have a POV in the storyline. This makes you get to know them both really well. In addition this also adds to understanding their relationship. Both of them have some issues they struggle with and it is nice to see them open up to each other throughout the story. Even though I feel like the building romance could have been more central, since the story for me lacked the romantic spark.
Christi Brath has a nice writing style. She doens't use much details, but still manages to create a story that has some depth to it. Even though I think there are multiple scenes that could have been worked out even more, I really enjoyed her way of writing. I had a nice time reading Hell of an Angel and think it deserves a 3,5 star rating.
In Hell of an Angel by Christi Barth, we follow Evangeline Thayer along as a dark angel who left Hell to try to live a normal life since she had no useful powers and was bullied by the other people and things in Hell. She was living in Buffalo, New York working as an actuary when she started to help out a company with 3 very handsome men. After the long day, she was ready to travel to Hell to visit her aunt who had raised her when suddenly, she was swooped up by a flying man who thought he was saving her life. It just so happened to be one of the men from the company she was helping, Gideon Durand. He then takes her to the watchtower where she sees the other 2 men, Rhys and Zavier, and they find out she’s a dark angel and she finds out they’re nephilim (half angel, half human). Many different things occur and they decide to team up to help each other, Evangeline will use her demon nullifying power in exchange for them to help her get all the ingredients she needs for a spell to become human, but of course, it doesn’t go as planned and new information is found out.
I really enjoyed this book, it’s not like any other angel/demon type of book i’ve read before. It’s in third person POV so it can be a little difficult to try to understand exactly whose pov it’s leaning more towards, and some parts were definitely breezed past when it should’ve been talked about longer and vice versa. All in all, I do recommend this book because it was a fun and easy read, it didn’t use terminology that was hard to get through which was very nice. There was humor, adventure, anxiety, and spice. The spice was done so tastefully, it wasn’t over the top or excessive which is nice because sometimes I like having it not be so hot and heavy.
This was such a great new world for me and the original concepts were great. I loved the drastic contrasts between both the light and dark sides working in unity to keep the world from collapsing.
The brotherhood presented here was also pretty fantastic! I loved all three members and seeing their interaction with their "counterparts."
Thank you to Entangled for the advanced readers copy in exchange for the honest review. I really enjoyed this read.
This was a fun contemporary fantasy read. The writing style wasn’t my favorite but the story was engaging. Gideon and Eva’s relationship felt forced at the beginning, but I enjoyed watching it grow into something sweet.
Not for me. The writing was just ok and the plot was uncomfortable at best. Very weird dynamic between characters. The setting was a bit odd too but it’s kind of believable that the falls would be a ferry stop to hell. The main character was touting herself as strong and independent but kept relying on everyone else.
Helleva good October spooky sexy times read. I've been waiting for Barth to bless us with another paranormal romance filled with sizzling hot good and evil love interest. Highly recommend.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing, LLC, Entangled: Amara, and NetGalley for providing an eARC for a honest review.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was fun, steamy and action-packed. I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed this book and will look for more books by this author.
Are you looking for a great read as we get close to Halloween? Hell of an Angel is a fun and suspenseful paranormal romance.
It's the second in a series, following Imperfect Angel first. I do recommend starting with Imperfect Angel, as it's also a great read, and it includes a lot of world building on who the various types of angels are.
In Hell of an Angel, we focus on the second of the three half-angels protecting humans. Gideon is the player with a bad boy rep among women. But he's such a sweet and protective guy under all of that. His perfect match is Evangeline, a dark angel born in hell who isn't as powerful as the other dark angels. They both have a lot to overcome and can truly see and relate to each other.
This book has romance, suspense, steam, and a fight between good and evil to save the world. There are enough jokes and funny scenes to keep it light. I am having such fun with this Unlocking His Heart series and can't wait for the third about our final half-angel protector.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the advanced reader copy. These opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed Imperfect Angel, the first in this Unlocking His Heart series from Christi Barth, so I was ready for Hell of an Angel and Gideon's story in Hell of an Angel. This is a fun world and a perfect escape after a day's work.
Gideon is half-angel and all playboy. He has a reputation to uphold, but when he meets Eva, he's thrown off his game. I liked this about the story, and the subsequent collaboration that develops into something more intense. Eva is a dark angel, and Gideon doesn't even know what he's dealing with.I loved having Rhys and Maisy from Imperfect Angel in the story as well. There's some great male friendships here as well between Gideon and his fellow half-angels.
Overall, an interesting and entertaining paranormal romance in an interesting world.
Humorous with swashbuckling intrigue
I read the last book in this series and it was just as good! If you like a touch of paranormal among the humans with lots of humor, sweetness, outrageousness and fun plus intrigue, you will want to read this series. I personally cannot wait for book #3. Each book has watched the attraction, the “wooing” and the final acceptance of the couple in question. In this book the couple is Evangeline Thayer a 31yo Dark Angel and Gideon Durand 87yo but looks 30yo because he is a Nephilim angel. Eva is desperate to become a human. Why? That reason is cause for most of the book. Gideon makes her a deal: he’ll help her to collect the items she needs to become human if she’ll help him find out who is killing other Nephilim.
This author can write the most entertaining stories with just the right amount of passion of which there is a lot with only one explicit scene that I can remember. There is a twist at the end that just made this story even better. On to the next story of Zavier and Liss. I cannot wait! I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Entangled/NetGalley.
