Hell of an Angel is book 2 in Christi Bath's series. This novel is written from dual prospective between our female mc Evie and our male mc Gideon.
Evie is a powerless dark angel who wants nothing more than to be completely human, Gideon is a half angel man who stumbles across Evie and the two of them go on a journey to stop a serial murderer while collecting the ingredients Evie needs for her human potion. I will say for this novel I ended up using my prior knowledge of Nephilim and demon lore to understand what was going on. There is an attempt to explain the world building but it mostly comes across as an info dump.
I have not read the first book and though this could be a standalone there are too many instances where the book references what has previously occurred. I found that to be sightly annoying because it felt like I should know what had happened for the characters to make sense.
The main characters were annoying at best. The had few redeeming qualities other than I was glad they found each other because I pity anyone else who has to be with them. Evie is on te wrong side of the snarky spectrum and Gideon is just waaaay to full of himself that these characters were exhausting and made reading even harder.
Hell of an Angel is perfect for fans of the Fallen series and Supernatural. I am hoping the next book installment is about Z because he seemed fun.
What a fun book!! I haven’t read the first one but this worked so well as a standalone (but obviously I’m going to read book 1 too).
It’s fun, sassy, action-packed and so sweet. Who knew the Devil’s granddaughter was such as kickass sweetheart? #spoilers do I won’t go into too much detail, but the book keeps you on your toes and hoping for the best.
Thank you so much Netgalley and Entangled for allowing me to review this ARC.
3 stars.
It may have been 4 if I had read the first book but I didn't realize this was the second in a series. The autho does a pretty good job at trying to get the reader to understand what's going on even if they hadn't read the first. I liked the funny bits and banter. There was a little bit of spice. Not sure if I'm really rooting for Evangeline and Gideon or not. Lol. 🤷🏼♀️
Hell of an Angel by author Christi Barth was an enjoyable read with some surprising moments.
Evangeline and Gideon were a good pairing and their escapades in the story holds one’s focus until the story’s conclusion.
Some turns in the story sneak up on you in what was an overall imaginative story with heartfelt characters.

Delicious and delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Gideon and Evangeline’s story was laugh out loud funny. I wasn’t aware this was book two in a series. While this can be read as a standalone, I’ve purchased the first book and can’t wait to read it. Thank you netgalley, Brittany Zimmerman and Entangled publishing for allowing me to read this amazing story
Evangeline has been employed to help Gideon’s company… just so happens Gideon is also a Nephilim and Eva is a dark angel. The two team up to stop a dark force.
Pros 😊
- Enemies to lovers - SOLID trope, instant pro for me.
- Anything that involves Angels/Demons living on earth is an instant pro for me. I love reading how authors interpret this.
- Fleshed out world - I could tell the author put a lot of time and effort into creating the world and the power dynamics within it! Very much appreciated!
- They go on a quest! I love a good quest, especially if they have to collect objects - big PJO vibes which was very nostalgic.
-Fast paced - made for an easy read which I finished in a few hours.
Cons 🙃
- I found the immense amount of character lore a bit clunky and hard to follow - while I appreciate the time spent developing the world, it was a lot to grasp. To be honest, I got very confused following this plot. That may be my fault as although this book is marketed as a standalone, it’s actually the second in an interconnected series. There was a lot of lore and character backstories that I think would have been easier to follow had I read the first book.
- One dimensional characters and whiplashing tension. I wanted to love Eva and Gideon, I really did, but they just didn’t grab me and the amount of back and forth “do I like him? I hate him!” gave me a headache. I love enemies to lovers, but this one didn’t have enough tension for me. By the end of the book I honestly found it hard to care about their relationship.
- “Unplanned nooky” I’m sorry but that deserves a bullet point of its own.
Spice: Open door, two scenes. Not cringey which is always a plus.
Final thoughts: this was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ star read for me. If you like angels and demons, give this one a read. It has a fast paced adventure and some interesting family dynamics.
I didn't connect with this book at all. Unfortunately I won't be able to finish this book after getting to the 50% mark. I didn't like the characters, their dialogue, or the set up. The world is interesting enough though. The different types of Angels did make sense but I could not feel joy reading about Eva and Gideon.
Another great story from the series. Its story a full of action, suspense, strange creatures, mystery, and twist. I loved both Evangeline and Gideon; their interactions, verbal matches, chemistry, and love story.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for Netgelly
What I didn't realize when I picked up this book that this is the second standalone in Christi Barth's "Unlocking His Heart" series. While this is a series of standalones they are interconnected and I felt like I was missing some context in the backstory of these characters.
Hell of an Angel is a lighthearted paranormal romance, and was my introduction to this author. The plot itself was interesting, I liked the story of this nephilim trio who have broken out on their own and a concept of a "dark angel" race in Hell that is the parallel to Heaven. I wish I connected with the characters more, this is an adult book but the dialogue and actions of the leads Eva and Gideon felt juvenile to me. Gideon specifically, who is in his 80's and labeled a "player" for sleeping around came off as a teenager trying to sound like a player rather than an actual adult who is well "equipped" with the ways of flirting with women to get them into bed.
I didn't mind Eva as a love interest, I wish we got to experience her life a bit more, it seemed to jump around in time quite a bit and didn't give enough to really connect with her past the base level of her background, which I felt bad for but couldn't fully actualize my feelings. For someone who was subjected to Hell level bullying I found it odd she still would consider it Home. I also couldn't register the insta-love relationship between her and Gideon, where one minute she herself wanted nothing to do with him and then in the next was in love.
Overall there were a couple twist and turns, the danger was very light and minimal, not extensive in its battle scenes and over very quickly. I would like to read the next installment and the original just to see if it changes my overall outlook of this book, but at the moment, with the stand still action, the awkwardly written spice scenes, this is just an OK read for me.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing.
I received an ARC, and i'm so grateful I did. This book had my giggling and kicking my feet. It is a paranormal romance. It is a standalone but more so like an interconnected standalone. I hadn't read the first book prior and after reading Hell of an Angel i'll go back and read the first one. There was some moments where I felt like I was missing the bigger picture or there was bits of the puzzle that was better explained in the prior book. All of that said I loved all the characters. Gideon and Eva held my attention the entire book with their banter. while this book is kinda considered enemies to lovers due to who they are. From the very beginning my Boy gideon was down bad. It also had the nice 'Touch her and you die'. I really liked the romance portion but there was also a mystery that kept me guessing the entire book. All of that mixed with a plot twist? Amazing. Will be reading the last book to hopefully see the entire gangs HEA.
The voice is amusing, the writing flows well, and it’s very readable. I stopped at the end of chapter 1 (5%) but it’s an easy three stars, four to five for the right readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for the ARC.
The 3 stars is not a reflection of the story as This is 100% my fault.. I didn’t know it was a second book! That being said, the author does a good job of filling in the blanks for you. It’s a lighthearted paranormal romance perfect for fall. I do recommend reading the first book but they can be read as standalone.
Hell of an Angel is a fantastic Paranormal RomCom just in time for Fall.
Eva is a Dark Angel with the power to nullify the powers of Evil. Not the most popular trick when you live in the depths of Hell! Deciding to leave Hell and live her life among humans, she has found her calling as an Actuary. When her company takes on a new client, she is surprised to find that the three gorgeous men in charge are Nephilim, half-angels working for The Order to destroy the demons of Hell. The partnership between Eva and Gideon Durand starts with a comical showdown, but when the Nephilim find that a keeper of the gates of hell and their protector have been murdered, Gideon determines Eva and her powers are the best way to find out who is behind these killings.
When I requested this book, I was not aware that it was part of series. However, the author does a great job getting you up to speed on the previous book’s events that it could be read as a standalone. I loved the chemistry between Eva and Gideon. Each characters is dealing with their past and want different things. I enjoyed reading how they worked together to determine what was important for them. I was happy with the conclusion and the story ended with an opening for the next book in the series.
I was very happy with this book and cannot wait to continue with the series. Hell of an Angel by Christi Barth comes out on October 23rd. Just in time to pick up before Halloween.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to review Hell of an Angel. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had no idea that this was the second book in a series. I felt lost at parts because I was confused as to why it seemed we should already know what's going on (again I didn't know this was a sequel so that is 100% my fault). I do feel like my rating would be higher had I read the first book before this one. I can easily understand why so many people enjoyed reading this, I just felt lost. I did enjoy how quick it was to read. So while this one wasn't for me, I know a lot of people who would enjoy reading this.
What a delightful five-star read. This is the second story in the Unlocking his heart series, but they really could be read as stand-alone, as they each tell a different person’s story. Gideon wasn’t always someone I liked, his personality just rubbed me the wrong way, but then Evangaline stands up to him and shows him a different side, and we get to know him better and that really shows us who he is. Evangaline was just sublime, watching her grow into her wings, proving herself and the love of her family really warmed me so much. Never have I wanted to scratch an itch so much, when you read the story I am sure you will want to scratch it too.
I loved this book. I found that the imagination on each page was delightful, and I normally don't even read this genre. There was mythology, philosophy, religion, romance... you name it all wrapped up in a crazy story that kept me reading late into the night. It was captivating.
If you have not yet read Imperfect Angel, I highly recommend reading it before tackling this book. There are a host of characters and a backstory that you need to be aware of to get the full effect of what's happening in this one.
The characters were fun to read about and their journey together is wild. Just read it. It's great.
Thank you to the author and publisher for trusting me again to preview one of Christi Barth's books. I can't wait for the next one.
A flirty and lighthearted paranormal romance with a dark angel and a nephilm. This book had an interesting plot, and the chemistry between the characters was spot on. Where it fell it a bit flat for me, was the dialogue. It was very monotone. The characters all sounded very similar. Other than that, I really enjoyed my time reading this book.
For fans of Gwenda Bond’s “Not Your Average Hot Guy,” “Hell of An Angel” is perfect for any fans of supernatural romance!
This book was so cute and I loved every moment of it. This is the second book by Christi I've read and I honestly could not put it down. It was cute, fun, and very much full of a cast of characters that are all enjoyable in their own realms.
The lore and complexities of all the characters can get confusing at times, but overall this was such an easy read and one that I really enjoyed!
Thank you NetGalley & Entangled Publishing for the eARC!
In this second book in the Unlocking His Heart series, we meet Evangeline Thayer, a dark angel who has established herself as an actuary in Buffalo to avoid the demon bullies from her former home. She wants to get rid of her single power that, frankly, has caused a lot of problems for her. She just wants to be a normal person.
Gideon Durand is the golden playboy of the Buffalo-based Nephilim trio that we meet in book 1. When he and Evangeline first meet, it doesn’t go so smoothly. Honestly, their second encounter doesn’t go so smoothly either. It's safe to say that these two do not like each other.
When Gideon and his partners are contracted to stop whatever has been taking out keepers of the keys to the gates of Hell and their protectors, he works out a deal with Evangeline for her help. It seems like that single power of hers may come in handy after all.
I recommend reading the first book in the series, Imperfect Angel, before starting this one. That will help get you up-to-speed with the world building and help you to become familiar with the characters. Plus, the primary storyline in this one builds on what happens in the first book.
This one is fun and clever with a veritable smorgasbord of fantastical creatures and celestial entities. There’s a nice depth to Eva and Gideon and their budding relationship as well.
Two warnings before picking up the book:
1. Some of the demon descriptions can be kind of gross. They certainly aren’t pretty.
2. I know there is a degree of irreverence that can be expected in a book like this, but there are a few throwaway comments or jokes that could be considered insensitive in this one.
Overall, Hell of an Angel is a fun and wild ride with delicious chemistry and some heartfelt moments. I’m hoping that there will be a book 3 centered around Zavier and Liss.
I received an advance copy from Entangled Publishing and NetGalley. All review opinions are my own.
