"Hell of an Angel" by Christi Barth is a delightful read that left me feeling good. The story is filled with sweet and funny moments, and I particularly enjoyed the incorporation of Nephilim lore. Evangeline's journey from a dark angel to a human, with the help of the charismatic Gideon, adds a unique twist to the plot. The dynamic between the two characters is engaging, and their banter adds a fun element to the story. As they team up to face an impending threat, the unlikely alliance between good and evil creates an intriguing backdrop. Overall, "Hell of an Angel" is a nice feel-good novel that deserves 4 stars.
3/5 ⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I did not read “Imperfect Angel” but as it’s meant as a standalone, I was really excited to read “Hell of an Angel”. The synopsis grabbed my attention, as I adore all things paranormal. Especially when it’s a rom-com!
The story follows a dark angel named Evangeline, who wants to become a human.
She grew up in Hell, and was bullied by the other creatures there because she has wings but cannot fly.
Gideon Durand, is a half-angel and a demon hunter. He’s never heard of dark angels before, so when he encounters the gorgeous Evangeline his world gets spun upside down. Evangeline has the gift to nullify evil completely, and with an unknown evil on the loose, the two will need to pair up together to defeat it.
The first thing that I noticed was that Gideon really only had one thing on his mind, and that was to sleep with Evangeline. I didn’t find the insta-lust as enduring as it should have been. He is also quite mean in some instances and I was a little thrown off by it. Eva on the other hand was alright as a character. I do feel like it was very superficial and we didn’t really get to delve deeper in who she is. Like what was it really like to live in Hell? And despite it being terrible, she still called Hell home.
I did enjoy the twists in this story because I didn’t see them coming, however I do feel like the pacing was 0-100. Either a lot was happening or nothing at all. With that said, I still think it was a cute story overall, I really liked the premise of it being between evil and good, dark and light. Enemies to lovers is my all time favorite trope, and if you enjoy magical creatures there are plenty in his book as well.
This is my first time reading this author, and I was not too impressed. While the plot was interesting, there were a few things that kept me from falling into this story. The main pain point here was the flat characters.
Gideon isn’t just a player, he is kind of gross. From the start, all he wants is to kiss and sleep with Eva. He doesn’t even take her too seriously. He is either flirty or mean, which is not a fun combination. Also, he flirted with Eva’s Aunt, which just seems wrong on so many levels. Everywhere they go Gideon is worried he is going to run into an ex, because he has apparently slept with the whole supernatural and Buffalo NY population.
Eva was an okay character, but I never felt like I got to know her. She was sort of robotic in her responses and actions. Sure I felt bad for her situation, but since I didn’t know Eva that well I just couldn’t sympathize. I’m sure it was bad, but she still refers to Hell as Home.
There were a few twists along the way that I didn’t see coming, but at times I felt like either too much was thrown at us or the action was at a stand still. There wasn’t much in between.
I absolutely loved Rhys and Z. They were great additions.

Wow, this was such a cute supernatural romance. I loved the dynamic between Eva and Gideon, they are adorable. Plus this book hits all the major points you’d want in a supernatural romance. It’s got enemies to lovers and a save the world plot, plus to have all these myths and lore about gods and angels being told in a different way was very refreshing. It’s also nice to see when a main character goes from hiding away because they think they’re weak to realizing their full potential and discovering that they really are strong. Plus this book had me laughing at some of the back and forth banter between all the characters. And if you like mythical creatures, this book is definitely for you, it’s got angels, demons, mermaids, alicorns (Pegasus unicorns for those who don’t know), one of the horseman of the apocalypse, witches, and mentions of werewolves. I can’t wait to see how this next book goes and to see how the characters evolve and come together. This book does have a little spice, but I will say that I wish there was more. There was really only one steamy scene and the others were only mentioned but not gone into any detail, which was a little disappointing. I did have a little trouble getting into this book in the beginning, so you’ve just got to stick with it, because it does get so much better. Happy reading!
I had gotten this book as an e-arc from Brittany at Entangled Publishing. This was my first read written by Christi Barth and it was fantastic. I devoured the book in 48 hours! I enjoyed the aspect of Heaven and Hell in the book.
I had not read the first book in this series, but I was still able to follow along just fine. The main character ‘Eva’ and ‘Gideon’ had great chemistry from the beginning. Eva is a strong female lead who doesn’t like being pushed around. After all, everyone hates a bully! I cannot wait to read the third book in this series!
"Hell of an Angel" is a paranormal romance written by Christi Barth. The book constitutes the second installment of the "Unlocking His Heart" series, which is formed by standalone novels that can be read independently of each other.
The story follows Evangeline Thayer, a dark angel and actuary, who lives in Buffalo and desires to become human. Gifted with wings but unable to fly, Evangeline grew up in Hell, subjected to constant bullying of all hellish creatures because of her negligible power. Half-angel Gideon Durand has been fighting demons for a long time, but he has never heard of dark angels. Least of all one with the power to completely nullify evil. Maybe in Hell this is a weakness, but with an unknown evil on the loose and intent on killing Nephilim? It is definitely a useful ability. After a series of chance encounters, the two make a deal: Gideon will help Evangeline retrieve the ingredients for the spell to become human, and in return Evangeline will help him solve his problem.
Fun, crackling, and compelling book, that kept me entertained from beginning to end! It was a light read, not without flaws, that made me laugh so much!
The writing is effervescent, lively and witty, accompanied by a fast pace and efficient dialogues. In my opinion this is a simple read, easy to follow. The presence of short chapters enticed me to continue, so much so that I got to the end without almost realizing it. I admit that the choice of third person narration, in this case, did not particularly convince me. But this is a personal preference, which does not affect my enjoyment.
The plot proceeds quickly and smoothly, without moments of boredom or heaviness. I was absorbed by the narrated events and especially the sizzling interactions between Evangeline and Gideon, which made me giggle a lot.
Evangeline and Gideon, protagonists with their third person povs, convinced me. Evangeline is a dark angel, living in Buffalo, where she works as an actuary at a company. Raised in Hell, she has never really felt at home. Because of her power Evangeline has always been subjected to the scorn of infernal creatures. Determined to build a new, safe and comfortable life for herself, she longs to become human. Evangeline is a determined, stubborn, extremely ironic and chatty person. However, beneath her brashness she hides a sensitive soul, plagued by doubt and suffering. She is a character that I enjoyed so much!
Gideon is a half-angel, raised and trained to fight demons. Partner in a shipping company, he is a proud, determined, and extremely flirty man. Gideon is marked by a difficult past that has left him unsettled. Beneath his apparent listlessness, he hides a lot of uncertainty and pain. He is a character I loved quite a bit!
The relationship that develops between Evangeline and Gideon amused me so much! Their constant bickering, their banter, was absolutely fantastic!
The secondary characters convinced me! In general I found them well characterized and some particularly intrigued me. In addition, I enjoyed the little group that was formed!
All in all, this is a fun and light paranormal romance that I recommend to lovers of the genre!

H of an Angel by C. Barth, published by Entangled Publishing LLC, is book two in Unlocking His Heart Series. The previous book is Imperfect Angel. Every book in the series is a complete stand-alone.
Evangeline Thayer was raised in h e double sticks, now living on Earth, becominh human. A stubborn dark angel.
Gideon is the male main character, an half-angel/ demon fighter who meets a dark one for the very first time. He's kind of smitten and they strike a deal.
An highly entertaing pnr read, twisty and action laden, fast paced, an excellent read, 4,5 stars.
I got asked by Brittany Zimmerman at Entangled Publishing to read this book because I loved book one!
This book did not disappoint! I loved our two main characters Evangeline and Gideon! I loved how fast paced it was! I loved the element of danger! I loved everything that happened ( no spoilers)
Well done Christi! I’m very excited for book 3! Go pick this up next month!
Super entertaining read!
I wish I’d known there was another book in the series beforehand, though they are technically stand alones. The world building is very cool and different which I appreciate as reading the same basic paranormal romance can get dull.
Fun banter and a fun concept!
Hell of an Angel is an enthralling romance that seamlessly blends fantasy and paranormal elements. This captivating novel serves as the second installment in the series, and although it can be enjoyed as a standalone, reading the previous book will enhance your overall experience.
This was a very cute standalone in a series. I do think you should read the first one before this one just because things make a bit more sense. The world building is a lot but it's really entertaining.
Evangeline is a dark angel and actuary. She wants half-angel Gideon to help her remove her power. They agree to work together.
A fun story. Many LOL scenes and memorable characters. A quick and fun read.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
This is a fun romance with fantasy/paranormal elements. In it, Eva and Gideon and thrown together to solve a problem that endangers the world - pitting good against evil. The problem in the novel is determining who is good and who is evil. This novel is the second in the series, and, while it is a stand alone novel, you will enjoy it more if you've read the prior book. The first book set up the environment in which this one takes place.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it didn't have the same charm of the author's prior books. Because of this, I'm giving it 4.5 stars, but will round up to 5. Fans of the genre will want to add this one to their TBR list. The author is on my must read authors' list.
"Hell of an Angel" is apparently the second in a series by Christi Barth, which I did not realize when I picked it up to read. I think it mostly worked as a standalone, though there were moments I felt like I was missing pieces of the backstory. The plot is a little bit complex, with Dark Angels, Fallen Angels, angels, half angels, Keepers, demons, and more. I admit to having trouble keeping the varietals straight. Eva and Gideon spark from the start, and the chemistry between them works. Barth placed them well within the secondary characters and the banter between the entire group of friends is entertaining. I would read the next entry in the series.
3 stars. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.
