Nick McAnulty's *Skinning the Coyote: A Horror Western Novel* is a gripping fusion of classic Western grit and supernatural terror. McAnulty’s atmospheric writing and intense plot deliver a hauntingly original tale that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. The novel’s unique blend of genres and chilling narrative make it a standout in both horror and Western literature.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
I enjoyed this book. It’s funny how it was able to stick with me. I started reading this book Back in Oct, got away from reading for quite some time yet I still had this book with me when I picked it back up to finish it.
I'm not usually a huge fan of Westerns, but the synopsis of Skinning The Coyote sounded so intriguing that I couldn't pass it up. It was exactly what I expected, in a way, and completely NOT what I expected way the same time.
Scuffles over card games? Check. Gunfights? Check. Horse riding and train robberies? Check and check! A pretty standard "outlaw gets captured and brought to justice" story right out of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western.... Until it isn't. That's when the fun begins.
It's definitely worth a read, even if you're not a big Western fan. Better have a strong stomach, though, Pardner.
Thanks to Nick McAnulty, Wicked House Publishing, and Netgalley for allowing me the chance to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book a lot! The first half of the book is a solid western story. The western cast of characters are all there, and the setting is excellent. Then, when you get about half-way in, the horror breaks loose. This western turns into a bloody creature feature!
The author did a great job with the characters. There were many characters, but they were easy to keep up with. He utilized multiple POVs that were incorporated seamlessly and added so much to the story. No characters are safe in this one, and that's as much as I'll say about that!
I'll give this one a solid 4⭐️ rating. I would recommend this for readers who love westerns but also want some gory horror. Check it out!
Eli Cooke took a job he shouldn't have. Now more than bandits are after him.. Will they work together to stop the evil or be destroyed by a ancient entity. Great story with amazing characters.
This book had great character development and the characters were very personable. Even the bad guys would tug on your heart. I have never read a cowboy and alien book before but it was quite nice and engaging. I will definitely be reading more of this auth.

When a gentleman bank robber name The Kid is accused of a train massacre that killed many innocent women children and men a retired sheriff name Eli goes after the outlaw he needs the reward but when he does he’ll learn he isn’t the only one for many reasons good and bad guys alike or after the kid know instead of telling you about the brilliant story in the interim let me say the end of the story it’s not only a twist it is a cluster crunch of greatness! Because the Walker brothers are also after The Kid no one can say they have really met the Walker Brothers but everyone has heard of them and even the kid is fearful they will catch up to him but that isn’t the only thing he should be afraid of by the end Eli will just want to forget the reward and go home to Maggie but before any of them can be free there’s something else they have to deal with and it is the something else that makes the end of this book and OMG ending they were a couple of things I didn’t like about this book mainly the horrible language that I am almost positive they didn’t say back in the good old days but as this is aura I overlooked it not to mention the plot was awesome it is because of the plot that I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves horror and the wild west there’s a great chanc you will not be disappointed I want to thank wicked House media and Met Galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I liked this a lot, the characters and the plot was just amazing. the mystery in this had me wanting to finish it asap
thank you netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review
A blood drenched western horror with a monster twist. Loads of fun and some really great characters. A great, gore-fest of a read.
3.5 stars
This was only my first western horror, but I really enjoy the genre a lot. It has all the best gritty, "last man standing" qualities of a western with the added anxiety and desperation of a horror. Skinning the Coyote more than delivered on both fronts!
However, this felt like it took forever to read. I was caught up in the story and had to keep furiously reading to find out what happened, but I never felt like I was getting anywhere. The frequent POV changes during each chapter made the book seem way longer than it actually was. It became a slog to get through that somewhat soured my experience.
I also thought the supernatural element was a bit clunky. It was a really interesting add to the story, but it seemed like something entirely separate from the main story. I saw it briedly right at the beginning, then it was gone until it randomly showed back up in the last quarter of the book. I didn't really get any answers about it either. What was it? Why was it there? What was its relationship to the old woman? Who was she? That part of the story feels unfinished; it just didn't integrate as well into everything else for me.
That being said, Kit really grew on me. I liked reading his interactions with Eli and Shane, and how all three of them grew closer throughout the book. He was such an engaging character and, despite his legitimate flaws, I couldn't help but to root for him and hope he made it out okay. For some reason, I kept imagining him in my head as Kip Sabian (the jury is still out on whether that's a good thing 😂).
Nick has a knack for writing beautifully developed characters! Even though I didn't get to see much of Weston in the actual story, my heart still bled for him. I even felt a little bad for Gideon, despite everything he and his brother had done. About the only characters I didn't feel some sort of empathy towards were Doc and Seth, otherwise I felt the others all had some sort of redeeming quality about them and it made for some horribly tragic dynamic characters that really took a piece of my heart for themselves.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wicked House Publishing for the copy. The opinion is my own.
This book has a little bit of everything. A man of law in disgrace after a mistake that took an innocents life, another who got into something horrific but is not that bad of a man, really, a crook who wants his justice, an ancient incomprehensible beast who turns everyone it sees into a snack. And more! All in a book that actually has a solid plot that is tied neatly together by the end (OK there are a couple of questions but they are mostly me wondering and not actually necessary for the plot as the characters wouldn'tactually have that information).
Honestly, I feel the prologue shows off exactly what you are getting in, though you might start to wonder after a few chapters. And then ah, there's the horror I expected. Loved it on its own.
The book itself has several POVs per chapter, easily distinguishable by having the name neatly written just as the POV starts. Despite following several characters it's never confusing. The characters aren't super deep but their motives are well established as well as their personalities.
I personally rather liked the writing style and the gore is in that perfect spot for me of you can visualize it very well but it does not linger on its descriptions more than necessary.
All in all 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wicked House publishing for this opportunity to read rage and review this arc which will be available October 6,2023!!
Western. Horror! Yes! This was a full tilt epic ride with bandits, a disgraced Marshall, train robbers and an an ancient creature out for blood. It was gruesome, bloody fun with an actually good plot.
