Detectives Steele & Stenson get a glimpse into the world of publishing when they investigate the murder of a bestselling author. The case gets even more interesting when a possible cold case connection comes up. Madison must work hard to solve the case while also balancing her budding personal life.
I thought this was a very interesting case since it was so unique and very different from anything else this pair has investigated. I loved the way Madison is starting to allow herself to indulge in personal relationships after struggling for so long. (I'm not 100% sold on the person she picked, but we'll see how it goes). There's just nothing to criticize about this series, it's amazing. Highly recommended for people who were hooked on James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series since they'll find a similar strong female lead and an equally addictive series :)
I’m always banging on about reading the entire series to get context and backstory. That isn’t necessary for this book as the author seamlessly brings you into Steele’s backstory, strength of character, and personality, so this book is a brilliant standalone police procedural. But do read the others; they’re awesome!
Finding out the latest murder victim is somebody she know, and their last call had been to her, Steele is immediately straight into this investigation. This original, fast paced, story kept me up last night but it was worth today’s yawns. Amanda Steele is one of my favourite leading female characters; she’s strong, flawed, determined, and credible, and I liked her interactions with Trent. She’s also likeable and somebody you would want in your corner if you were I in trouble.
Overall, I enjoyed this read immensely and cannot recommend it enough. Seriously, read them all. I gave Her Last Words, by Carolyn Arnold, five stars and look forward to being a fly on the wall on her future investigations.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
I have read all of the books in the Amanda Steele series. If you decide to read this series, don’t judge it on the first book, The Little Grave. After I read it, I wasn’t too sure how I’d like the series because that first book was more about Amanda’s grief than the mystery she was working on. Since then, she is dealing with her grief and has been able to move on, and she has become one of my favorite Carolyn Arnold characters.
All of the Amanda Steele books are procedural, but Her Last Words is even more so than the previous books, and I thought it was great! Observing how Amanda and her partner, Trent, followed the clues was interesting. I especially liked how everything was brought together.
Balancing work and Amanda's home life, which is so much better, was a challenge for her, but her boyfriend, Logan, was understanding. It will be interesting to see if he remains that way in the future. It's easy to see why those in the police force have troubled relationships.
I thoroughly enjoyed Her Last Words as will anyone who likes police procedurals.
Another enthralling crime thriller
Where Detective Amanda Steele seeks the killer.
This time it is somewhat personal, too,
As Amanda missed the victim's call when it came through.
The victim is an author of murder mystery books
And her body is arranged, or that's how it looks.
It replicates a scene from her best selling read
Is the killer a fan? More clues are what Amanda needs.
A gripping read involving events in the past
Maybe a killer from then can be caught at last?
As job and family compete for her time
Can Amanda and her time quickly solve this crime?
As clues are uncovered, you keep looking for more
Some seem essential, others you dare to ignore.
However all the way through you're involved in the case
And all the family dramas that are taking place.
A fascinating read that kept me engrossed all the way through
So I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to you.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
Such a brilliant read and this is my honest review.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Her Last Words' by Carolyn Arnold.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Carolyn Arnold, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 17th October 2023.
This is the seventh book I have read by this author. It is also the ninth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Stolen Daughters' which I also highly recommend and is the second book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series 'The Silent Witness' which is the third book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Black Orchid Girls' which is the fourth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Her Frozen Cry' which is the fifth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Last Seen Alive' by which is the sixth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Her Final Breath' which is the seventh book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series and 'Taken Girls ' which is the eighth book in this series.. Each book can be read as a standalone and I would recommend them all.
This novel consists of a prologue, 47 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
Yet another epic read from the very talented Carolyn Arnold!!! Absolutely rammed full of twists and turns!! Congratulations Carolyn on yet another page turner!!
This is an extremely well written book with vivid descriptions that will suck you straight into the storyline and captivated from beginning to end. The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline.
Every time I see a Carolyn Arnold book I just know I have to read it and that it will be amazing and that's without me even bothering to read the synopsis and this one was exactly the same!!! The storyline means that there is no problem with this being read as a standalone. I was absolutely hooked throughout, a true page turner from beginning to end. Carolyn is one of those amazing authors who writes these epic books that when you are reading them you promise yourself one more chapter and then you'll go to sleep but each time she ends her chapters in a way that has you hooked so you have to read just one more, but then another and before you know it you have walked around all day with the book glued to your hands and have devoured it in one sitting!!! The storyline was in depth and packed with suspense, books, murder, twists, family, tension, hate, grief, intensity, bullying, shocks and was an edge of your seat, nail biting and heart racing psychological thriller. One of the extra things I loved about this book is that she delves into the world of books and publication with the victim being a high selling author. I loved discovering the different aspects involved when it comes to creating a book and the people involved from editing to publication along with finding more about the literary processing. Of course with Carolyn being such an amazing author herself she wouldn't have needed much, if any extra research on this subject but I would love to see Carolyn's work hit the big screen like Felicity Kelley's was ready to! I was absolutely hooked. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm looking forward to reading the previous books in this series as well as more to come. This series is extremely addictive and I cannot wait to see what the next "episode" brings!! This book is an absolute rollercoaster ride filled with twists, action, murder, heartbreak, suffering, suspense and everything you could ask for in an absolutely thrilling page turner. As always with Carolyn's book I was mind blown when the killer was revealed so a huge congratulations Carolyn!! After reading hundreds of crimes and thrillers it's getting harder and harder to shock me but at no point did I even consider them!!! If you want to know more about this absolutely epic page turner which you will have to grab your copy today to get them!!! It is one of the best books I have read this year and I really enjoyed and loved the ending!!! It is filled with suspense, tension, mystery, shocks, love, friendship, sadness, crime and everything you could ever want in a crime novel. As always Carolyn ensures there were no loose ends at the book and that everything was explained and tied up. It is one of my pet hates having loose ends at the end of a book so well done Carolyn!! I won't say more as not to spoil it for future readers. It is a true page turner that will leave you biting your nails on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. I cannot wait to see what Amanda and Trent are going to do now!!!! Hope your busy typing the next one up Carolyn as I cannot wait!!!
Although this is the ninth book in the series you will have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved meeting all the characters again who were all strong, well defined and unique. I have become completely invested in Amanda, Trent and Zoe along with all of the other amazing characters through reading these books and they now feel like family that I miss when I come to the end of one book but am excited to see again at the beginning of the next!! Amanda is absolutely whoop a## and I love seeing strong female leads in books. She has a background but will not let it pull her down and she is definitely someone I would love to have on my side. It has been so bitter sweet watching her bond with Zoe even more and watching their relationship develop and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I've also enjoyed seeing Zoe's confidence growing book by book after everything she went through. They have become like a family to me along with Trent and Malone. Trent is another fantastic team member and they work perfectly well together. I love Rideout's (medical examiner) character and personality with his morgue humour and I also like Malone and see him as a sort of fatherly figure to Amanda. It was intriguing to see the interactions between Amanda and Trent after what happened in previous books and I'm glad to see that it hasn't affected their partnership and that they still make the most amazing team out there!! These characters are all truly unforgettable and have become like friends that I love meeting again and am sad when it comes to the end and I have to say goodbye to them. Alongside the main characters Carolyn always creates interesting and realistic characters for each crime and in this book we revisit the sister of a character who was murdered in a previous case so it's interesting to get to revisit some characters and their backgrounds. A fantastic group of intriguing, realistic and solid characters all brought to life by Carolyn's fantastic evocative writing skills!! I am definitely looking forward to meeting them all (well almost all) again!!!
This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors Carolyn!!! Here is to your next guaranteed success 🥂!!
I could not praise this book enough and highly recommend. Carolyn I cannot wait to read more of your very successful work!!! I would also love to see this book turned into a movie. Another absolutely addictive, compelling and gripping true page turner!!! If you have not read any books by this epic authour then you are seriously missing out!!!
Overall another absolutely captivating, engrossing page turner that is compelling and addictive by an extremely talented author!!!

Everytime a new Detective Amanda Steele book lands in my inbox I smile a stupid smile. It's just one of those series that you can fall straight back into like hugging an old friend and book #9 was no different. A comfy space was found and i did not move from the very first page until the very last.
Amanda is on annual leave, not yet due back for a few days shes actually starting to get bored (but won't admit it) so when a call comes in that she's needed... as a witness... she's obviously shocked and goes against protocol to head to the crime scene.
The victim is a local crime author Felicity Kelley who Amamda has had dealings with previously and is the last person that she called! The guilt sets in, Amanda was flying so was unable to take the call but promised herself she'd call Felicity back. Could she have saved her?
Detective Steele and her partner Trent are given the case, begrudgingly and start to gather evidence including a playing card left on the body that matches the victim in Felicity's latest book. Felicity has just hit the pinnacle of her career after being offered a movie deal so where has it all gone wrong and who would want her dead?
Digging deep, as we've come to expect with this team, they uncover a cold case from 15 years ago that bares resemblance, are they connected? Can they find a motive to get to the killer?
A fast paced novel that has a real sense of urgency, in turn makes you feel you have no choice but to carry on reading (that's my excuse anyway). Action packed with many twists and turns expertly weaved in but also having threads of personal lives intertwined.
Each installment just gets better and better, Carolyn Arnold is a master at writing this genre and never fails to disappoint. As always I'll be waiting on tenderhooks for #10.
The biggest thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
In Her Last Words, book nine in the Detective Amanda Steele series, Amanda finds herself exploring the publishing world while trying to find the person behind the murder of bestselling crime author, Felicity Kelley. Whilst this is the ninth book in the series, it works well as a stand-alone read. Read on and learn the reason Her Last Words would make a great addition to the reading list of mystery fans.
Bestselling mystery author Felicity Kelley is riding the train of success. Her latest book, The Romeo Killer, is being made into a film. She's working on her next novel, which promises to be explosive. However, as she prepares to put finishing touches on the story for submission, someone chose to end her life. Her last phone call was to Detective Amanda Steele, however, the call went unanswered. Amanda was on her way home from holiday, when she received the message. She returned the call the following day, only to learn of Felicity's murder. Overwhelmed by guilt for not responding sooner, she requests the case be assigned to her and Trent, despite the fact her leave was far from over.
On the surface, the case appears open and shut. However, when Amanda dug below the surface, she found a possible connection to a fifteen-year-old murder case. Amanda along with Trent finds themselves in a race against time to find the killer before they decide to strike again.
Once again, Arnold delivered a tale designed to keep readers glued to the pages. This is a one sitting due to its engrossing storyline. I enjoyed following the clues along with detectives. I am not sure if it is because I am familiar with the author's style, but I guessed the identity of the murderer, the moment a particular clue came to light. So the revelation came as no shock to me. Having guessed the identity from early did not diminish my enjoyment of the story. As a matter of fact, it compelled me to keep reading to see if my hunch was correct.
Amanda has proven once again the reason she is such a good detective. Her determination, attention to details and her desire for justice lights up the pages. It's hard balancing her personal and work life. However, the support of her significant other and her adopted daughter helps to ease some of the pressure.
Overall, Arnold delivered an engaging and solid mystery. I look forward to the next book in the series, which based on the summary promises to be another enthralling tale. 'Her Last Words' is perfect for readers looking for a thrilling mystery which features a great cast of characters.
So it’s another review and another crime procedural for me. My grandfather was a cop, and the analytical side of my brain loves trying to solve the crime alongside the team of detectives.
I used to mention when the case was personal for the team, but it seems that is the trend lately and this one is no exception. Amanda knew the victim. She was a source of information of the police for the writer that was murdered. I finally read a murder mystery set in the book publishing world.
Amanda and Trent take over the case based on Amanda’s relationship with the victim and they work to track down who could have wanted the author dead. The clues are uncovered slowly, but while keeping my interest and giving me a chance to try and unwind what has happened. Amanda has guilt that she missed calls from the victim just before she was murdered in addition to leaving her family time behind to work on this unscheduled case. I like the mix of her backstory, her current personal life and the current case. It makes Amanda a more believable and relatable character. This was such a quick read for me. I kept wanting to know how it would end.
While this is the ninth one in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. You will miss the growth of the characters but can enjoy the current case. This is part of my ever-growing series of crime procedurals that I always seem to be waiting for the next book in the series.
An engrossing who-dunit where I didn’t know who the killer was until the end. Not sure if I liked the FMC, Amanda, since she seemed to obsess over the first convenient suspect. Or maybe that is human nature – to go with the easy answer. Thankfully, she persevered to find the correct villain. I also didn’t really feel that fellow detective, Trent, added much to the story other than being a past romantic interest which I hope does not come about since it seems Amanda has a loving and patient life partner in Logan. Maybe I missed it, but I’m not sure how the ramshackle cabin on the book cover ties into this story.
Book Review: Her Last Words: A gripping and utterly addictive crime thriller (Detective Amanda Steele Book 9)
Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author or their representative but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.
Detective Steele is back in another page turner
After finally getting a much-needed vacation with Logan and Zoe, Amanda Steele feels refreshed and almost ready to return to her duties as a detective with the Prince William County PD. Freshly landed from sun-soaked Florida, she notices a missed call from a local author. Thinking nothing of it she decides to call Felicity in a few days when she is officially back from her break. But when Felicity Kelly is discovered murdered the next day, Amanda knows she cannot sit idly by while a colleague takes the case. As her and her partner Trent Stenson arrive at the scene they notice a meticulously set tableau that bears striking similarities to the author’s current blockbuster thriller novel The Romeo Killer. The more the pair dig into the author’s death, the more they cannot rule out anyone including a playboy ex-boyfriend, borderline obsessive “super fan” or a completely unrelated perp. But something does not sit right with Amanda and when she delves into Kelly’s current work in progress she wonders if the author’s penchant for taking cold cases and adding “what if” scenarios didn’t contribute to her demise. Could the author have gotten too close to the real killer in her latest novel? When another body is discovered Amanda wonders if her and Trent are off the mark or if this is a clever play by the killer to throw them off their trail. The case finally receives a break when the pair stumble on an unlikely lead, but will it be too late to catch a killer and bring justice to their victim?
Her Last Words is the latest in the Detective Amanda Steele series of books by author Carolyn Arnold. Prince William County Virginia is apparently a very small place, and if it wasn’t apparent before, it is even more so with this installment. As the victim is none other than the sister of the deceased in an earlier case Amanda feels personally invested in finding the killer so she can bring some closure to this already grieving family. Felicity Kelly’s penchant for taking cold cases and giving them a new spin may have been her undoing as the case she chose seems to have landed too close to her career in the publishing world. Amanda and Trent much separate what is actual lead from the efforts of the murderer to throw the cops off the case. With their thorough efforts to interview all involved parties the possibility that they have already spoken to their killer does not sit well with the duo.
In Her Last Words Carolyn Arnold has crafted a fast-paced page turner that will have the reader playing armchair detective along with the deceased. Being a homicide detective is not an easy job even when there isn’t a case and Arnold’s portrayal of Logan and Zoe’s flexibility with her unpredictable schedule is as endearing as it is heartbreaking. Amanda’s large family also continues to provide an unwavering web of support for the small budding family including the sage advice and support of her father the retired PWCPD chief of police. The dynamic with Amanda and her partner continues to be a particularly interesting aspect, and while it seems that they have moved on from their ill-advised kiss a few years back it still continues to be an elephant in the room even if it is fading. It will be interesting to see where or if Arnold takes this in upcoming cases. While Her Last Words is part of a series, Arnold has structured this and pretty much all her series novels as offerings that can be read stand alone or in chronological order.
If you like a strong, fearless female lead, likeable characters and murder cases that will have you guessing until the very end Her Last Words will be a nice addition to any TBR.
Felicity is now a famous author but when she is found dead Detective Amanda Steele becomes personally invested; as the last call Felicity made was to her.
But when investigating the scene things seem familiar, and Amanda knows she must work quickly before the killer strikes again, but there will be links to a past case and not all is as it seems.
This novel pulled me in from the first page and had me guessing throughout, there were several suspects and a lot of suspense.
Arnold gives us a fantastic character development through this series with the character of Amanda and she keeps going from strength to strength throughout the trauma she has been through.
This is a good next book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. I have enjoyed reading this series and was excited to get to read the next one. Amanda always seems to get involved in the crazy cases and this one hits close to her since she knew the victim from a previous investigation! I like how some of her cases are intertwined, it keeps it interesting.
The plot of this one was fun, I enjoyed that the murders were actually based on Felicity’s book. It made it just a different type of case to solve and to figure out why someone would use the victims’ own story to conduct their killings. Of course, there was a possible connection to a cold case that the victim was not killed in the same way. However, you learn that this is what Felicity’s next book was going to be about and maybe she was just a little too good at her research. There were a lot of people who you are introduced to that you think could this be the murderer? I know that I guessed on a few different people before finding out who it was and I did not guess correctly. I like it when I am surprised at who the murderer is because I feel a lot of times you are able to figure it out.
I like that we are seeing a little more of Amanda and her relationship with Zoe and Logan. The one thing that I found slightly odd in this is how it keeps getting brought up about her and her partner, Trent, and how they kissed. It makes it seem like she still has a question about if things could happen with them, but she is in love with Logan and he lives with her and Zoe. I like the partner/friend dynamic that Trent and Amanda have and hope it stays on track and doesn’t get messed up because they work well together. It was nice to still see Malone being involved and helping with the case and of course all the usual people who have been around helping solve cases like the CSI’s and medial examiner.
This was a good continuation in the series and I enjoyed reading it. I am excited to see what crazy case Amanda will be involved in next.
Disclosure. This is a review of an ebook I was sent for free. All opinions are my own.
This is the ninth title in the Detective Amanda Steele series.
The prologue draws you in with Felicity feeling in danger and convinced that she has let a killer into her home.
Detective Amanda Steele is shocked when returning Felicity’s missed call from the previous day to be answered by one of her own colleagues. Felicity has been murdered and Amanda feels that she needs to be the one to investigate this case, as she had interviewed Felicity previously.
Felicity was a mystery writer who had been enjoying a lot of success lately, including signing her first movie deal, so potenially lots of suspects. Amanda hasn’t read Felicity’s books, but it turns out that Felicity has been posed like a victim in one of her own novels. Could the murderer be a crazy fan?
And why is there no paperwork in the house of an author?
Or what about a serial killer, when another body is discovered similarly posed?
So which lead to follow first? Who to speak to?
For once I did make a correct guess as to the murderer before all was revealed.
A gripping thriller indeed.
When the blurb to this book was released, I knew this would become one of my favorite books of the series — and Carolyn Arnold did not let me down! Her Last Words follows Amanda and Trent as they investigate a novelist who has been murdered with characteristics that align with one of her novels. As an aspiring author myself, this hit straight into my nervous system and had me absorbing every piece of information, desperate to hold onto the tiniest detail with the hopes that I could unravel the mystery of who the killer could be.
I love how well Arnold balances the case along with Amanda’s personal life. Her relationship with Zoe is continuing to grow, change, and adjust to everything going on around them. When the series first started, I was not a fan of Amanda’s. She wasn’t handling things very well and the risk she put on others, in addition to her own career and life, were tough to accept. But now, I’m seeing what I believe to be pieces of who Amanda was before losing Kevin and Lindsay. It’s refreshing! Her relationship with Logan is evolving, too, but deep down, I think she aligns with Trent on a deeper level.
HER LAST WORDS will draw you in if you love mysteries that operate like a puzzle or a deduction word game. I was truly fascinated by how well everything was explained without giving away the culprit. Her research is dead-on, giving the readers a realistic ride of a case!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of Her Last Words by Carolyn Arnold
This is the 9th book in the Detective Amanda Steele series.
Amanda gets off the plane to a missed call but wanting to get home from her holiday she doesn’t return the call until the next day when the call is answered by a detective.
Local author Felicity Kelley has been murdered.
Amanda and her partner Trent are assigned to find the killer, then another woman is killed.
A fast moving read that can be read as a stand alone.
A missed phone call will have Detective Amanda Steele wondering “what if” as she searches for a killer. Amada was returning home from vacation when local author Felicity Kelley left her a voice mail message. She had met her on a previous case and had agreed that Felicity could call her when she had a police procedural question for one of her novels. Now, Felicity is dead. As she and her partner, Trent Stenson, investigate the case they soon realize that the killer had staged the murder from a scene in Felicity’s book. Felicity had recently broken up with the man she was dating for cheating on her, was he angry that she had dumped him? Did she have a deranged fan who felt snubbed by her? When another woman is killed in the same manner, do they have the beginning of a serial killer? The race is on to solve the case as Amanda learns that Felicity was investigating a cold case from years ago. Was she getting close to solving the case? Another well-developed mystery that will keep you guessing until the exciting end. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
As always, Amanda Steele is amazing!
Twists that kept me captivated and tearing through the pages. I love a mystery that I don't guess the ending to in the first few chapters, and Carolyn Arnold is so good at keeping me guessing.
This mystery was about a writer who uncovered a real unsolved murder and fictionalised it to expose the killer. The killer found out and replicated her fictionalised version!
I love all the characters in the Amanda Steele series and some characters I just love to hate!
As always, I'm excited for the next in the series.
Although this is a series, it's not crucial to read the previous books, but it will add to your reading pleasure.
Amanda and Trent are working on a grizly case in which one of the victim's last actions were to call Amanda over the phone and leave a message. This story is full of twists and turns, it's fast-paced and a great police procedural as it places in action all the necessary steps for a case to be built against the culprit. If you love action, mystery, and a good and entertaining story, Her Last Words is a must read!
I thank Ms. Arnold, her publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.
In Her Last Words, author Carolyn Arnold has another hit police procedural. A woman has been killed. One of Felicity Kelley’s last calls was to Detective Amanda Steele. She had been on a plane when the call came in and so didn’t respond until the next morning when one of her colleagues, Detective Hudson, answered the phone and imparted the news that Felicity had been murdered. Amanda had met Felicity several years prior when she had investigated the murder of Felicity’s sister. Was this family supremely unlucky or what? She called her partner, Trent Stenson, who met her at the station and they arrived at the scene together. They were not entirely welcome but their boss quicjky reassigned the case to them, which made them even less popular.
Amanda Steel is a woman who has lived through a lot and has just now started coming out of it. Her family had been in a car wreck, murdered really, in which her husband, daughter, and unborn child were killed. It nearly destroyed her but she put that pain to use in solving murders and has been very successful. She is now living with and committed to Logan and they have an adopted daughter named Zoe. Amanda had found Zoe hiding in her parents’ bedroom after they had been killed. She had seen it all. Zoe is recovering better than Amanda, and Logan is a hero. Trent Stenson had been her partner for several years. They had crossed the line one time and kissed, and it still haunted hem both. But, they are an excellent team and this was a curious puzzle which they would solve. The mystery was quite good, a trademark for Arnold and the characters were meet along the way are interesting and varied. Arnold writes a good mystery. It was quite a good read.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Her Last Words by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #CarolynArnold #HerLastWords
This is the 9th book in the gripping Detective Amanda Steele series.
When Detective Amanda Steele is called to the brutal murder scene of successful local author Felicity Kelley, her blood runs cold. Because Amanda not only knew the victim, but was the last person Felicity called moments before she was murdered. Plagued with guilt that she never answered, Amanda is left wondering whether she could have prevented the murder, and vows to catch the killer, no matter what.
This is a brilliant thriller that has a fast plot and twists to keep you hooked. Once started I didn't want to put it down.
I can't wait to read the next book in this great series.
