I should had looked at the trigger warnings before reading this book. Please look those up before reading. If you’re okay with reading those topics then you may really enjoy this book. Personally the triggers ruined the story for me and I could not finish reading it.

DNF'd @ p.52
The Last Immortal by Natalie Gibson sounded like it would be a good match for me as a fan of Gothic Horror, but unfortunately it wasn't for me. The content warnings, of which there are many, weren't kidding or messing around. It's very dark and it doesn't waste any time going there. I decided I didn't need any more on top of what we already got considering that child sexual assault is also on the table. I like dark horror stories, but I don't need that. Also, on top of that I wasn't a fan of how the story's getting told as if the the main character is telling us her history. It was getting old fast hearing just how things were or weren't in comparison to the present day.

Sadly disappointing. I was so excited to start this book after reading the blurb and the first chapter with the main character being in an asylum seemed like an interesting start. Unfortunately it just fell short. The writing was all over the place and the FMC a frustrating character.

The Last Immortal started out strong however I started losing interest, possibly due to the very dark themes of the book. This definitely needs to come with an 18+ restriction as I did struggle with child SA/incest part of the book. Might be for readers who love dark Victorian era novels, however there is no reprieve while reading this book.

I was initially drawn to the beautiful cover page of this book. The synopsis was interesting, and I was at first intrigued. However, the violence and gore made this book an extremely dark read. I had to stop reading it and ultimately could not stomach the SA. I am not the audience for this book.

I requested this book because of two things,;
the book description and the book cover.
both are amazing.
and then I started reading....oh my god this book is amazing.
I want to talk about somethings so, a detailed review is coming.

This one was just okay for me, and took me a bit to get through. It was pretty dark and has a fair amount of trigger warnings, which people should definitely checkout before reading. It was well written, but some parts of the book were very intense, and I found myself having to take a break from reading it.
Thank you NetGalley and BHC Press for the ARC!

I had to take time away for myself after reading this book. I did not read the book description upon applying, and maybe I should have, but now I’m afraid I would not have picked it up if I had. I also read the reviews for the book once I hit roughly 15%, and I should not have done that either, because it made me want to DNF it shortly thereafter.
This book…should come with a very, very long list of trigger warnings. A lot of it is dark and disturbing, and I will not lie and say that I can’t see why so many people could not finish it. While dark and disturbing, the book also made think in a way that I had not anticipated that I could or would about this type of fantasy. Though it is not without its horrors, I absolutely loved the perspective I acquired because of it.
Immortality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and some of us already know this without it being said. However, after reading, I cannot view my own answer on whether I’d choose to be immortal or not, especially as a female, the same way as I may have previously.
So yes, trigger warnings are absolutely necessary, but if you feel you can stomach it, I very very VERY highly recommend this book and all it entails.

First I would like to thank Net Galley and BHC Press for an advanced reader's copy.
The first thing you should know about this book is that there is a lot of dark content. Please check the trigger warnings if you feel the need to. It is a dark gothic horror book. There is a lot of body-horror and sexual and emotional abuse.
Positives:
- This book was dark as advertised! I loved the shock I felt at every turn.
- The main character felt very relatable and it was easy to sympathize.
- The premise felt new. I don't feel like I've read this book a million times before.
Negatives:
- This book felt like it was meant to be a trilogy and was smashed together into one book. There were many moments where in-depth descriptions were repeated as if I hadn't read it less than 100 pages ago. This made the book feel much longer than it was and caused it to drag a bit.
- The ending felt a bit anti-climactic. Without giving anything away, this book was so full of action and big reveals the ending felt a little out of the blue. Maybe if there was more alluding to this ending earlier in the book it would have felt more satisfying.
- The author also decided to put a little jump ahead in time at the beginning of each "part" that I felt gave away huge events that I wish had been left as a surprise. Could have done without those.
- The main character is supposed to be a centuries-old being recounting the events of her life, but she sounds more like a teenage girl throughout the whole book.
Overall I enjoyed my experience reading this book. It met expectations and deserves at least 3 stars. I think if the book had cut down on a few of the repetitive descriptions and had maybe aged the narrator a bit this could have been a 4 star book.

This was a rough read. And not because it wasn't written beautifully, but because it was dark, violent, confusing and overall, just not fun. Heavy trigger warnings dealing with sexual assault, sexual assault of a child, violence, abuse, neglect and mental illness. I knew going into this book that it was dark but geez sometimes it felt almost grotesque. I don't know who I would recommend this to as there isn't really a happy ending, the supernatural/magic system is confusing, and the main character is hard to like. It is easy to empathize with her, but she isn't my favorite person. There were also some points in the book where the author did a great job of showing and not telling a situation but then tell us about that same situation and it felt repetitive. It also was disorienting to read as the main character was an unreliable narrator, so we never really got clear answers. The ending was baffling to me.
Overall, nicely written and I would try another one of this author's works, but if it has similar subject manner, I think I would pass. I also don't think I would recommend it because it is so dark with no point to any of it. There isn't a lesson or a greater meaning, it all just exists.

DNF at 25%. This was too much for me. Not a reflection of the writing but this was really dark and intense and I don't think I could read the entire book.

This was a difficult book to read, definitely check the TWs and take them seriously. i found that for the most part I enjoyed this and the difficult topics were done well but I am left a bit flustered and unsure how I feel about the book overall.

This was horrific - and that was the intention I think. When they say read the TWs, they're not BS-ing you. Please do not take this book lightly. It was difficult to read but I think Ramilla was a very well executed character. Heavy on the Dark Gothic vibes and all the other unsettling things that come with that.

This atmospheric tale grips you with its tenacious heroine, weaving a survivor's narrative that I both admired and devoured. The author deftly integrates mental health representation into the plot, making it a refreshing and enriching aspect of the character dynamics.
However, like a flickering candle on a stormy night, my enthusiasm flickered in a few key areas. The magic system, though intriguing, felt rushed and unexplained, leaving me with more questions than answers. This was a missed opportunity to deepen the story's mystical layers and fully captivate my imagination.
Furthermore, the abrupt ending left me feeling like I'd reached the edge of a precipice, expecting a breathtaking vista but finding only a tantalizing mist. While I appreciate the potential for a sequel, I craved a more satisfying resolution in this chapter alone.
Finally, while trigger warnings were present, their scope didn't fully encompass the sensitive subjects touched upon within the narrative. More detailed and explicit warnings would have empowered readers to navigate these themes with greater comfort and foreknowledge.
Despite these shadows, "The Last Immortal" shines with its captivating prose, chilling atmosphere, and a resilient female protagonist who commands the stage. The author's talent is undeniable, and this debut offers a compelling journey with enough darkness to illuminate its strengths. While not quite hitting the full five stars, it earns a solid and satisfying four, leaving me eager to see what future tales will emerge from this talented storyteller's pen.

Overall I enjoyed the book and have to say it was really dark, like everyone states in their reviews, but there were trigger warnings so you knew what you were signing up for (even though I get when people say they could've been more precise). I liked the idea of the book and how it made you uncomfortable in the best way possible. I just had a bit of a problem with the pacing of the book. Like the end felt a bit abrupt.

Lady Ramillia only remembers portions of her childhood. Convicted of the murder of her parents she doesn't remember, Ramillia is sent to the insane asylum where she was put through horrendous "treatments". After years being tortured she is saved by Sir Julian Lawrence who declares that she is to be his wife. Swept into a new lifestyle Ramillia soon learns that she belongs to an secret society, but the cost of being in that secret society may be more than she is willing to pay.
This book was very well written with a very unique plot. I did enjoy the story, but at times it was much darker than I was expecting it to be. Definitely make sure to check all trigger warnings before starting this book. I do recommend this book if you enjoy the horror genre and are looking for a truly unique story with twists that you won't see coming.
Thank you Netgalley and BHC Press for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.

I really tried to give this book a chance because I didn’t want to fall for the reviews that I’ve seen. However, I only got halfway through the book and I just couldn’t keep up with everything that was happening.

A beautifully written book and well crafted by the author but I had to DNF at 20% this book is extremely dark and there needs to be a list of trigger warnings for this book. The content is heavy and frankly it was too much for me to read. The blurb and the cover are stunning and what drew me in but if I had any idea just how dark this book was going to go I would not have read it. It wasn’t for me but there are definitely readers out there who would enjoy

This book is definitely dark and not for everyone but I enjoyed it!
Ramillia realizes too late that her father only married her mother because she had a child-like body.
After what happens to her parents she is sent to West Freeman Asylum for Lunatics.
Being manipulated by the doctor. She suffers through a lot of trauma and discovers that there is more than he’s letting her know.
She becomes friends with Hester and when Lawrence comes to take her back home. She brings her friends along.
From more secrets and lies. We find out that Lawrence has plans for Lady Winmoore.
This book is broken up to three different parts where we learn all that she’s been through and how she overcomes it.
This book was a wild and crazy ride!!

Thank you NetGalley and BHC for this advanced copy of this book!
This story was super intriguing. At first the whole world and what is happening to the main character is slightly confusing but once you learn more I couldn't put it down!
Lady Ramillia Winmoore is narrating her whole life through this memoir she's writing to remember her life by. Each part is divided into a "phase" of her life and there's a mystery as to has happened to Ramillia. Overall the plot of the book was entertaining and I kept wanting to read to find out what was happening. Ramillia def grew on me even if she did some crazy stuff.
But I will say that the trigger warnings (or lack there of) should have been more explicit. There was a lot of taboo/dark/trauma/gore that might not be for everyone.
Some things that affected my rating of the book were all the POVs we got and the switch between them was confusing and not very obvious. Id have to reread some stuff to get who was talking. At the beginning of Part 2 & 3 there were some recaps that felt unnecessary and repetitive. It made it seem like each part was it own book but it wasn't. The ending also seemed abrupt, and for all the build up that happened in the whole book it just wasn't a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed the writing style and the world building was interesting and unique. I'm not sure I'd reread it or recommend to someone who isn't into dark/horror genres.
