This cover is so cute. I love how the author tells of their whole process. Drawing is a a relaxation tool for them. I think that is such a good idea. This book had so many things to draw. The instructions were easy to read and follow. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

I really liked this book. It is a collection of various types of objects, animals and foods in kawaii style.
I really like this style, with the lineart colored, instead of making a defined black line.
The selection of designs is very vast and well explained in various steps. It's a shame there isn't a more detailed explanation on how to color them, although there is some advice on which media to use to color them.
I would have appreciated QR codes that link to videos showing how to color them, as I have already seen done in other books.
It's still a fantastic selection and the style is really sweet and pleasant.

Thanks Netgalley for letting me read it!

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the eARC of this book, all opinions in this review are my own.

Sweet Drawing is aptly titled, as the book is filled with absolutely adorable illustrations and how to draw them. I have always like the artist's drawing style and use of alcohol markers and color pencils for the illustrations, the book includes step by step instructions to make a variety of things from cute animals to food to stationery, this book will be good for artists who are beginners in illustration, and how to use simple shapes to draw cute things. This book can also be used as a source of reference and to build one's own art style.

I really wanted this to be a 5* book when I requested it, but I am disappointed by the lack of detail in the step-by-steps. The drawings are lovely, and I wish I could learn to complete each page in the detail that is shown, but unfortunately I am let down by there being a lack of instruction.

We start off by receiving the basic shapes to start the image off, followed by an instruction to add some detail, and then the final product without explaining how to shade, colour, or even clean up the image before getting to that point.

This may just be my logical brain disliking the style of instruction, however I focus heavily on user-friendly guides for my day-to-day work and find that this doesn't fit with my expectations.

I am sure there are people out there that will be able to follow this, given they have a creative bone in their body and aren't exactly beginners, but I did struggle with trying to make my images match those that were being shown, without being taught the exact technique.

This could have just done with a few extra images between start and finish of each drawing, to give a little more guidance, making the book maybe 1/3rd longer in page-count.

Aesthetically I am pleased, reading this as a book to see someone else's art, I am satisfied, but as a guide, I am not.

Thankyou Netgalley and Quarto for allowing me to read and review this book, I am sorry that it didn't quite fit my expectations. and therefore, I have rated this a 3.5* for the reasons above.

Sweet Drawings
4 Stars

This book explores everyday household items from your environment and teaches beginner artists to draw them in Kawaii style.

To be honest, this book wasn't to my taste. I found drawing at this small size challenging. Though I enjoyed doodling along to the book, my favorite areas were the animal and plant sections.

All artists start by drawing what's around them and what's in their space. Sweet Drawings does a great job breaking these items down into basic shapes. I like that this book suggests affordable options when selecting tools. It also includes tips and tricks for adding color to our illustrations (which are always scary). They're step-by-step picture tutorials to follow along with. A few steps are skipped, but not much. They're beginner-friendly.

Overall, I like the author's gentle teaching style. She gives good advice and drawing tips. I'd recommend this book for kids wanting to learn to draw in a Kawaii style. It's a good choice for a private school or public library. Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, for providing me with a digital ARC, for an honest review.

A cute how to drawing book that contains over 150 drawings. From food, to animals as well as things found inside and out this book shares how to draw a little bit of everything.
My one qualm is that they only show two steps sometimes one step on how to draw something before giving the completed image. I would have preferred a few more steps. I really enjoy line by line books.

Thanks to Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group for the advanced copy.

This was such a sweet book. I have read a lot of kawaii drawing books where every item is personified by adding a face and, while that is cute, sometimes you want an adorable boba tea that isn't staring at you.
That is where this one comes in. These items are just adorable without being anthropomorphized. Each section is split into various genres such as kitchen, garden, bathroom etc and it has a lot more typical Japanese items such as dimsum and mochi rather than just westernised items.
Very straight forward with how to draw and lots of customisable items.

Cute, easy to follow directions, something to sketch with on a relaxing afternoon. Would be great for kids, or to draw with kids if you have any.

This is such an easy and simple how to book. I love it. It gives a great step by step guide on how to draw each thing but it doesn’t just give you one option such as watermelon it shows you how to not just a watermelon but also honeydew melon. My favourite section was on the garden as I’m a big plant person but honestly I sat down with my 8 year old nephew and he was able to understand and follow the steps to draw each thing
Would highly recommend to anyone

Sweet Drawing

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was such a great interactive read!

I've always been rubbish at drawing - I have the image in my head, but just can't ever get it down on paper!

This book gave lots of practical ideas on how to create the cutest little images - each one broken down into simple shapes before creating the finished picture.

I gave a couple of these ideas a go and I can safely say, that I now know that I'm far better at objects than I am at living things! It's the faces... I just cannot get them to look right at all.

I liked that at the start the author/artist spoke about the right equipment to use in terms of pens/pencils and which papers are best. This can make a huge difference on the outcome and ease of drawing.

I loved all the cute images that are included. There's different sections for food, animals, garden and school.

A really useful, interesting read that you can keep dipping into whenever your creating your next artistic masterpiece.

💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕

Cute, easy to follow prompts for helping to learn to doodle simple objects. I really appreciate that the author breaks things down into "make a rectangle, then adjust it like this". Books say stuff like that all the time, but here you get shown the process, which really helped it to finally click for me. The foundational steps are great. That said it does have a bit of 1, 2, 3, and magic step for where everything is done. And you really need to do a lot of these in color. I only had a pen/ink set up on me, which left things feeling very flat. In a way, that helped too, because I could see my shape was right and I mainly needed to get to work with the colors.

My children and I really enjoyed following along with this book.

There are plenty of cute pictures, with easy to follow steps.

The pictures provided are for things like bubble tea and sweet deserts that aren't always in the usual books like this.

I have started keeping a journal of sorts and wanted to add cute doodles in the margins. Sweet Drawing immediately caught my eye. Olga Ortiz’s has a style that is simple and adorable. Her instructions and tips are easy to follow and recreate. Using colored pencils to draw the outlines was a game changing tip. Grab a copy of this for new artists or your journal kit. Practicing my food drawing right now.

This book was a little short, but it had some really cute illustrations in it. I also wish it gave a little more detail on fishing the illustrations, but it’s good for a beginner who needs somewhere to start.

Another cute book by Olga Ortiz! I love the cute drawing style and easy to follow instructions. This may be meant for young drawers but I’m an experienced graphic designer and enjoyed every bit of it. Olga Ortiz walks you through the elements of “cute” such as eye placement, etc. so you can use the principles of these cute, sweet drawings for other work. Highly recommend!

This book was cute - and fun to flip through.

I am not really experienced with drawing so it was nice to see how an everyday object (like a carrot) gets broken down into more basic shape, without becoming unrecognizable. I also like how they include some variations, and how to frame them. (so for a carrot, there are a few variations in shape, few variations in leaves, and also how to place them next to sliced carrots).

I think one thing that might be more helpful in the future is to break down how to color them, even for the first few examples, or include some 'finished' drawings in just a single color. I am not experienced, so for me the last step was a pretty large jump. That being said my single color drawings came out pretty cute, and it was relatively quick to sketch the shapes which was fun as a beginner.

First let me admit that I am not the best at drawing. I still draw stick figures. My daughters on the other hand enjoy taking time and learning how to draw in detail.

Thank you #SweetDrawing #NetGalley for the ARC of Sweet Drawing by Olga Ortiz. This book will be released on October 24, 2023.

I love the first part of the book where the author goes into detail with lots of tips and tricks for drawing. I found that part very helpful. Olga show you animals, kitchen items. school items, bakery items and things found in the garden. The drawings are very cute.

I will say that my drawings did not come out very well. I think if I had the patience to go into detail they would have looked better. I found that I needed to skip step one and go right for step two when starting a new drawing. My daughters actually looked like the author's drawings. My best drawings were of a chicken, bee and bee hive. My squirrel kinda looks like a cross between a frog and squirrel.

It was fun to try and I know my daughters will take a bit more time to enjoy this book. Thanks!

Sweet Drawings by Olga Ortiz was my first introduction into learning to draw kawaii style. I appreciated the tips at the beginning of the book, the theme-based organization of the illustrations, and the visual step-by-step instructions. It was a lot of fun showing my 4 year old my attempts at the drawings. She thought they were great!

Thank you Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group- Walter Foster for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
