I didn't really find this book all that suspenseful and the ending made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
I loved this story!! Completely enthralling! I was gripped right from the start. It was suspenseful, mysterious & unpredictable! Great read!!!
Thank you Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. I didn’t get to read it before it came out, but I finally did and am happy to provide the review.
Jo is not excited about camping, but is excited to be pampered at the spa resort with her husband, Martin. Their relationship had been lacking recently and she was happy to have a chance to reconnect.
Gayle, Sam, and Tony were other members of the hike that was led by their guide, Peter. After a lengthy hike, it was time to set up camp. After setting up camp and having some hearty stew, there is a fight around the campfire. Everyone goes to bed, but awakes to the death of a party member.
With no cell signal or any other means to reach out for help, they must attempt to get help. Who can be trusted? Who is the killer amongst them?
I really enjoyed this book! It felt a little slow moving towards the beginning, but it felt necessary to set the scene and get the story moving. The author really made me care about the characters. I always love a book the goes back in time to provide exposition for a character as well.
I can’t wait to look into some of this author’s other books!
This book checks some of my favourite mystery/thriller boxes: Murder and a remote location. Good characters and some good, tight suspense. A few twists to keep things interesting. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I'm going to go and look for his other books as well. The author did a nice job of keeping me interested and guessing. The characters were well rounded and the story had a nice pace.
This book proves exactly why I do not go camping - so many things can go wrong 😂 We meet Jo - who was promised a luxurious spa trip after a few days of camping by her husband. She is understandably not looking forward to it. They are doing this hike / camp with a few other people and before they even take off, she has a bad feeling. I definitely did too!
One of the people in their group tries to push Jo over the edge “on accident” - but Jo knows what she saw. Her guard is immediately up. I can’t imagine anything worse than being trapped on a mountain and feeling like someone is after me.
I don’t want to spoil too much, but things quickly go from bad to worse. Joe has to put all the pieces of the puzzle together while also fighting for her life.
I enjoyed reading this intriguing story and finished it in one sitting. It is a "who done it" story filled with suspense, mystery, and revenge, with enough twists and turns that kept me turning pages until the end.
Thank you for this ARC, I really enjoyed this book with well developed characters and plot with a brilliant plot twist. There was a good level of suspense throughout and you could go back and realize who did it after the reveal (though I had my suspicions about half way through that proved correct).
Some of the description of the scenery got me a little bit confused about where we were but I like the change of having a woods/wilderness based murder mystery.
I look forward to reading more books by Mark West.
A Killer Amongst Us follows a group of hikers that are on a getaway. Jo & Martin are trying to respark their marriage, and seem to be enjoying themselves when one morning they wake to find one hiker has fallen over a cliff. With drag marks its clear it was no accident and now the rest of the group must protect themselves from whomever the killer is among their ranks.
It has a nonlinear time-line and clues are immersed throughout. I enjoyed the book (I did figure it out well before the end) but still liked the progression of the novel. It's under 250 pages so is a relatively quick read.
Jo and her husband Martin are trying to salvage a marriage that is struggling, and as part of that process, have decided to spend some quality time together on a trip away.
So, they have signed up for a hike over the moorlands, and a night by the campfire, which Jo is less than excited about. She is in it for the luxury spa time to follow, but before the pampering comes the pain.
Of course, Jo has no idea of just how much pain is going to be involved in this hike! The hiking group involves another couple and a single man, and a (presumably) seasoned guide. But after a near-disaster early on, Jo's nerves are on edge. And it doesn't help when Martin seems to view the incident differently from her.
After tensions flare that evening, a group member is found dead the following day and all hell breaks loose. In a remote location, the possibility of being trapped without telecoms coverage, with a murderer nearby, is a terrifying prospect - not least when you don't know who to trust...
This is really gripping book, with plenty of dialogue to bring the characters' voices alive in the reader's head. The suspense is ratcheted up with a variety of plot twists, and the ending is deeply satisfying. This is an absorbing thriller delivered by a skilled author. It gets 3.5 stars from me.
They haven't camped in years, but Jo and her husband Martin are looking forward to a guided overnight hike across the moorlands, followed by a stay at a luxury spa. The first accident, which could have easily been fatal, takes place before they even reach their campsite. The next one doesn't end so fortunately and they find themselves suspicious of their fellow hikers.
As much as I love thrillers that take place in isolated settings, I couldn't get into this one. The characters felt generic and the setting didn't capture my imagination. The plot alternates between the hike itself and what happened in the weeks leading up to the trip and a couple of details make the ending reveal obvious long before the characters figure it out. .
Jo agrees to go on a group hiking and hotel weekend with her husband, Martin, in an effort to help get back the spark in their relationship that’s been missing since Martin’s daughter/Claire’s stepdaughter Olivia left for college. But things start to feel “off” almost immediately, when one of their fellow hikers trips and almost injures another group member. But Jo is immediately suspicious of the “accidental fall.” Then the group wakes up after the overnight stay and find a group member has been killed. What is going on with this group of hikers? Is it just a series of coincidences and bad accidents? Or is someone out to get the members of the group one by one?
This book was really fun and suspenseful, in that it’s a great twist on the classic locked room mystery. The group is mobile and able to get around, but they are isolated and without a way to contact civilization for a good deal of the book, so there’s plenty of claustrophobia and fear related to that isolation. Also, there’s plenty of tension and suspense that just hangs over the book from the beginning, creating a great atmosphere. The writer really does a great job building everything up.
I also have to say this was a book where I did not see the ending coming. I was really surprised and loved the twists that came into play. It was really perfect and hit the right notes. I enjoyed it.
Jo was also a fantastic character that I enjoyed getting to know throughout the book. She was practical, relatable, and her character added enough to the drama without being annoying, if you know what I mean. She hit the spot for a thriller protagonist.
I definitely recommend this book and would read more from this author in the future.
Wow! Roller coaster of a thriller!
When Martin invites his wife Jo on a group hike vacation, the idea is not her usual style, but she agrees. The odd bunch of hikers set out into what will become a dangerous situation, where no one knows who to trust.
I was hooked on this book, couldn't wait to turn each page, trying to guess what could happen next.
Brilliant edge of your seat thriller, will be reading more from the author, amazing!
I was sure this had to be a re-release and spent the 1st few pages convinced I'd read it before but then....... the plot completely veered in a new direction and I couldnt wait to see what happened next. Do not be put off by the opening chapter feeling familiar, the book 100% comes Into its own really quickly. The characters are original and well written, a few good twists and turns, a super quick read but I loved every second!
A Killer Amongst Us by Mark West - Who doesn't love a thriller set in a remote place? This book was the first book I have read by Mark West and it was a thriller that was done RIGHT! I loved every second of this book and read it in just a few days. I could not turn the pages fast enough. The ending was SHOCKING.. never saw it coming. I cannot wait to read more books by this author! READ THIS BOOK! Thanks NetGalley and The Book Folks for the ARC! This was definitely in my top 10 books this year!! 5 stars for sure!
This was an interesting read on the challenges that occurred on what was meant to be a fun weekend away. It was like a murder mystery book of who done it. Still an enjoyable read.
I liked this book I thought it was intriguing and suspenseful although I kinda had it figured out by the middle ut that didn't matter still a great book. The only I didn't like was the descriptions of the scenery and stuff were super hard to follow and imagine it was a bit confusing. Other than that great book!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book!
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
I enjoyed this book for the most part. If the pace was quicker than I would have enjoyed it a lot more as it had so many good elements. The moments of suspense kept me reading and wanting to find out more and solve the intriguing situation!
I was so excited to read this, but it ended up being too slow with a lot of tangents and I skimmed through. More suspense and a quicker pace would bump this story up a couple stars.
I think the concept of this book was great, but the execution didn’t land the way I would have hoped.
“A Killer Among Us” is a who dunn it about two couples who end up camping with each other and one goes missing.
I found myself getting distracted while reading and having to repeat sentences several times because I was losing interest. Based on the description I thought the book would have been more thrill and suspense but I felt it dragged on. Once the book gets towards the ending it picks up some speed. But overall it felt like it was dragging.
It’s a pretty quick read, can be read in a day, but it still felt like the book was dragging. Love the concept just wish it was executed differently.
Thank you NetGalley
