This was so interesting and looking forward to reading the next one! Glitch is a graphic novel set in a world that glitches and figures appear causing destruction and mayhem for the locals. The illustrations are great and loved the sibling duo along with the mystery aspect.
A trippy comic about starting life over in a new city with friendly people and shadows lurking around. With a mystery to unravel, the siblings embark on a journey that may prove dangerous.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to next volumes!
Thank you #NetGalley and Yen Press for giving me the opportunity to read this!
3.5/5
I found the concept of this first volume definitely interesting and new.
It's a super duper fast read considering there's very little text. The drawings aren't my favorite style, but the story did get my attention.
I'm not totally sure how to feel about it yet, but considering it's only a first volume, it was ineed a good start to the series.
This was interesting and unique! Looking forward to more in this series..
Thank You Yen Press and NetGalley for this ARC!
What a great start to a series! A fascinating setting, interesting and random things happening, and relatable characters—I’m looking forward to seeing where this series goes!
I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I became interested in this graphic novel. In fact, I was drawn to it by the cover, which I thought was beautiful, and by the title, which intrigued me. I have no regrets whatsoever, as it was a very enjoyable and gripping read, and I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel to find out what's going on!
Minato and Akira move to a new town with their mother, but soon see strange things along the way. Sort of shadows and visual cracks. Giant shapes with animal outlines. When they realize they're not the only ones seeing them, they investigate to find out where they're coming from. With the help of a few classmates and strange characters, they criss-cross the city in search of answers.
The sequel will tell us more, but for now I've really enjoyed my reading: it's interesting, the drawings are nice!
This is great start for this series.
Minato and Akira Lee are brother and sister. They have moved to a new town, with their single parent mother. They are settling into their new school but something is odd about this new town. There are weirdly ghostly appearances, the local shop keeper has wings instead of a face and some strange small creature was caught peeping through Akita’s bedroom window.
Determined to get to the bottom of this mystery Minato and Akira team up with new friends from school to investigate these strange phenomena but as they do so they realise that the presence of these ghosts might not be as benign as first thought, especially when someone goes missing in a nearby forest.
The artwork is great, the story is engaging and now I need to read book two because I want to follow this series to the end.

4.5/5 stars
This was a really easy to read manga. Siblings Minato and Akira move to a new town, knowing this will be different in a new area - but just how different is quite a surprise! This was a quick and intriguing read, and I can't wait to learn more about these glitches - what are they? Why can only some people see them? Where do they come from? I'll be eagerly awaiting the next installment!
It's always hard adjusting to life in a new town, especially when strange occurrences seem to be the norm. Shadowy creatures appear, some large enough to loom over buildings. Most of the townsfolk go on about their business, but others take notice. Yet . . . no one thinks to investigate these happenings until some new kids come to town?
Well, okay then.
I liked the concept, and the story held my interest. I'm willing to continue with the series, but I had a very hard time suspending my disbelief with this one.
Glitch, Vol. 1 introduces us to a town in which strange phenomena occur, these shadows, but not quite shadows appear, which we later find are called Glitches. The story picks up about as soon as the volume wraps up, which is fine, but I’ve now learned there’s only three volumes, so I’m interested in how it will wrap up quickly. To get an idea of the setting and characters, picture a sort of Welcome to Night Vale meets Persona vibe. All in all, I wasn’t super into the artwork or the characters, but would continue to read the series.
This was interesting, and I enjoyed it, but I am not sure I will be pursuing the next volume. I didn't get as much of the world as I needed to make me interested in continuing.
A gentil middle-grade manga intro to a 3 volume series. This is very much a beginning in the sense that not much happens, we just get to meet the main characters and experience the odd town with supernatural/SF events happening. The premise is typical new kids in weird town trying to get answers, and from the low level of reveal and characterisation I think this is going to stay rather on the surface.
But the illustrations are very pleasant, and the atmosphere is very friendly making this a cute read.
First and foremost, I'm absolutely obsessed with Shima Shinya's manga drawing style. It is absolutely incredible, I was mesmerized at every single page and I couldn't get enough. And I will check out her backlist just because I need more of her art - that is how much I loved it.
On the other hand, from a narrative perspective, I found it a bit weaker. It felt as if sometimes there were parts missing from one page to the next or even from one vignette to the next, the transition wasn't as smooth, the dialogues didn't quite feel natural and attuned to what had previously been said. It can definitely be improved and it didn't prevent me from enjoying the manga, but there were a few times where I felt like I was missing pieces or I was feeling a bit disoriented and that annoyed me a bit.
For instance, there's a moment when the characters unanimously start calling a creature "hirata-san" (or something like that) and the name hadn't come up at all previously and I don't know if it means something in Japanese - and in that case, there should have been a translator's note - but it wasn't clear to me at all and I couldn't understand where the heck it came from.
Last, and this is an important thing to note for me, I loved the presence of a nonbinary character - the older sibling - and how their identity was never challenged or questioned or even hinted at as something "not ordinary". They used they/them pronouns, everyone referred to them as they/them and the words used reflected that respect and normalcy. It isn't relevant to the plot at all, which to me made it all the more special.
A family moves into a new town and discovers something very peculiar about their new home. All the residents seem fine with the unusual creatures and strange happenings, but the siblings and their new friends begin investigating who can see what, and what is going on between strange predators and prey blending into their world. This is definitely going to be a slow burn story, and some of the characters could use some more page time to developers into their own people, but the older sibling uses they/them pronouns, which is nice for a bit of diversity on the shelves.
Review to come October 16th to blog.
I received this book from Netgalley/Yen Press in exchange of an honest review.
😍It was quite weird from the start, haha. Minato is at their new class and suddenly an apparition/shadow appears and it is a scary one! From that moment on we get more and more spooky hints and sometimes see things appear in the sky or in the town. There is even someone in town who is from the other side and handles things for the ones that also got to here. I am so curious about the events in the other world and what the shadows/apparitions have to do with it.
😍I loved how Akira (the younger sibling) found a friend group immediately. It always makes me smile seeing new kids connect with others so easily.
😍Oh, Minato! They keep losing their way, getting lost, which just made me laugh because they seem so mature and yet one little distraction and they are lost. Well, I guess even without the distraction they would get lost. It is quite a skill to get that lost in such a little town.
😍Minato being mentioned either by their name or they/them/their. And I am guessing given what mom said in the car: "You don't have to go to school." is also about that. I loved that everyone in town did their best to give the right pronouns/call them Minato. I am curious about Minato, but since it is is not relevant to the plot as it is maybe this will be all there is about it.
😍I loved that we got to see a lot of things through Minato, but also through Akira!
😍The art was an interesting/quite pretty style. I loved how the apparitions appeared and how they looked. Plus, the character designs were also good!
😍I loved Minato and Akira form an investigation group with the kids Akira befriended earlier. How they went to see how often things appeared and if it was more than years before. Plus, also try to figure out what is going on. I am not sure if I would have had the courage, especially not seeing that big shadow they encountered. Yes, the shadows don't seem to do much, but who knows.. Don't want to get on the wrong side.
😍The new character that was added. Hirata-chan. I was at first worried the story would turn a certain way (more silly) but instead Hirata was a great addition and could bring in some inside info which was handy.
😍The ending took up things a notch and I just love how it went from mysterious to OH FUCKITY. I am very curious about what is next and what is lurking in that place!
All in all, this was a good volume. Mostly mysterious with some spooky apparitions but it definitely set the base for something big and spooky and I need the next volume!
Glitch is a perfect October read. I loved the unique art style and the novel's spooky-but-not-too-spooky vibe. I loved the dynamic between the siblings. The stylization and expressions are a real strong point for this art style. I loved the character design and thought the 'glitch' creature design was unique. I liked the shopkeeper's design, but there are definite plot holes surrounding the adults and the larger townspeople's reactions to the paranormal phenomenon. (What do non-see-ers see when they look at the shopkeep? Are the adults okay with the shopkeep? etc.) The plot was straightforward, even for a middle-grade, but it could definitely develop over the next two volumes. While I loved the drawn interactions between Minato and Akira, the dialogue was slightly disconnected from the artwork. I understand this is volume 1 of 3, but I feel I've left off in the middle (and ostensibly, I have). Overall, this was a fun, expository novel, and I'm looking forward to what will come in volumes 2 and 3.
I loved this spooky adventure graphic novel.
Amazing graphics and art style.
The characters were fun and relateable.
Such a fun read overall.
Glitch is a coming-of-age dramatic story blended in with the supernatural. It begins with the classic scenario of a family moving to a new town and attempting to adapt. The unique visions blend nature and the surreal.
I am completely unfamiliar with Manga so this is a hard one for me to objectively evaluate. .it seems to be a five star graphic novel for Manga fans.
Two kids move to a new town for a fresh start, but this is no normal place. Some people can see them, others can not, What are they, where are they coming from? Shadows and monsters are normal here, and now the kids want to know more.
I rated this 3 stars. The artwork in this is unique, very different from the WebToon style I'm used to, but a good different. BUT background is a tiny bit rough for me, it's not as polished as they character designs. This novel is quite mysterious, which I loved. One thing I will say that does put the rating a bit lower is the Translation of the novel (this is originally Japanese), which made some of the characters feel quite disconnected occasionally. I do see a lot of potential with this series and I think I will be carrying on with it!
