This started slowly for me, but quickly snowballed and got better and better. I really enjoyed this -- terrifically funny, clever, and genuinely human. I laughed out loud at numerous turns of phrase, and I absolutely was satisfied when it ended. Well done!
This should be a movie.
I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This books grabs you from the start and you are considering that this is a feel good christmas book, until Eve goes home early and her world is turned upside down.
The tone then changes and yet there is a simplicity and comedic twist that makes the pages turn so quickly that you just cant help but turn another.
The characters are so well written that you can hear the bell on Joes shorts jingling and can almost smell teh turkey cooking.
The delivery of the five gold rings is emotional and funny at the same time and makes you reflect on grabbing the moment.
A great lighhthearted read that is well written and deserves 5 christmas stars.
5* An enjoyable book, far better than I expected.
Two days before Christmas, Eve returns home earlier than expected and discovers her boyfriend 'with another woman'. Distraught at his betrayal, she throws him out. Eve goes the jewellery store in Hatton Garden where she works part-time, there she breaks down in front of her lovely employers. They quietly contact Eve's colleague Joe, knowing he's the best person to comfort her. With the drama of Eve’s news, a blunder occurs with the store's Christmas orders and Eve and Joe set out to personally deliver the correct orders.
A Chaotic sequence of events follow as Eve and Joe drive around London delivering five rings, each having a special meaning from engagement to marriage, all to be handed over at a prearranged time, the last one on Christmas Day. In between the deliveries, Eve and Joe gatecrash her ex boyfriend’s family Christmas party with uproarious results.
A fast paced novel offering laughs and tears with a most satisfactory ending.
Thank you Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC, this review is my personal, unbiased opinion.
I was not sure at first then wow . It got better and better. Just keep reading it if like me if you are not sure. A beautiful slow burn love story along with a great story of a wrong delivery and 5 ace gold ring all with amazing stories. Also a terrible cheating boyfriend and a perfect ending.
Kristen Bailey has outdone herself with this witty, fun, Christmas romp com that had me chuckling, sucker punching me with a few tears, before squeeing at the epilogue.
After catching her boyfriend in flagrante, a heartbroken Eve and her colleague Joe find themselves on a series of adventures around London delivering five rings for their jeweller bosses.
From the first sentence of Five Gold Rings I was hooked. There's a wonderful energy and action with Kristen Bailey's writing - a sharp, dry wit combined with well-rounded characters to root for and well-plotted shenanigans that hit the emotional beats. Though, having been a fan since "Great Sexpectations', I was not surprised.
The shenanigans were fun and not over-the-top that took me out of the story, or came across as 'try hard' to be funny. So often I find books try to tell me they're funny and mad cap rather than show me. The whole time I was reading it I felt like I was watching a movie in my head.
I also adored Eve and Joe, and the case of supporting characters, such as Joe's best mate Gabriel and Eve's twin brother Noel.
Refreshingly, the book addresses the emotional fallout from Eve's very recent heartbreak. Eve realises she's a mess and to work through her breakup before jumping into anything with Joe. While Joe genuinely wants to and acts like a friend, putting her needs above his desires. He only once mentions the dreaded term 'friendzone' but its in a lamentable way, and at no time does he act like an antitled arsehole that I see far too often in romance books (instant DNF).
This book is now my equal first with Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh for my favourite holiday rom com that I will be re-reading for years to come. I really hope someone adapts Five Gold Rings into a movie that captures Bailey's sharp wit and warmth. I have pre-ordered this book and will also purchase the audiobook.
Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC.
I bloody adore Bailey’s books. They are always a wonderful blend of comedy, puns and characters you will love.
5 Gold Rings does not disappoint.
Whilst it is often beyond-belief in terms of the narrative, this in no way spoils the story which shows her real craft. It was also nice to see previous characters referenced - a real treat.
Bailey is quickly becoming a favourite author. Keep writing!
Three and a half stars.
When Eve finds her boyfriend in a compromising position in their shower with a work colleague on Christmas Eve her world comes crashing around her head. It's the most magical time of the year for her and her family and this has left her devastated. Feeling unable to spoil her family's Christmas with the news she goes to the Hatton Garden jewellers where she works part-time for some support from the kindle old couple Mr and Mrs Caspar who own the shop.
Joe also works part-time at the jewellers and has had a crush, no he's been in love with, Eve almost since the first time they met, and he's been trying to pluck up the courage to give her a very special Christmas gift. Since Joe isn't really very subtle, Mrs Caspar knows he is in love with Eve and calls him to help cheer her up. One of Joe's other part-time jobs is as a waiter at hen-dos and today (for Christmas) he's dressed as an elf, wearing very tight shorts with bells on the bottom. Then disaster strikes ... a courier was supposed to deliver five pairs of cufflinks to a customer for a Christmas Eve party, but instead he has delivered five engagement rings which were supposed to have been delivered to five guys who were intending a Christmas proposal.
Since Eve thinks her drama may have contributed to the mix-up, she offers to collect the engagement rings and deliver the cufflinks in their place. After all, London isn't that large and six deliveries is totally do-able. Egged on by Mrs Caspar, Joe offers to drive Eve around London.
This is a classic Christmas romantic comedy, complete with nativity play, men popping out of cakes, bridezillas, fairy lights, naughty crackers, multiple Santas, family barneys, and more risqué puns than you can shake a turkey at.
I liked this, but I think you have to be in the right kind of mood for a full-on, Christmas-pun laden, romantic comedy and on what was the hottest day of the year it was just a leetle too full-on for me.
