Once Upon is an alphabet book inspired by fairy tales. A is the poison apple from Snow White. Young readers may not know the references but older readers will. Great for a fairy tale unit.

Once Upon: A Fairytale Alphabet
by Judith Graves
A beautiful book with great art. The fantasy nature of the alphabet was not predictable. the symbolism of the representations were cross fantasy culture. With recognizable books and stories that are referenced with honor and bright enjoyment. the book is a great introduction to young children of the stories of fantasy and books their parents have read and loved. A new twist on the alphabet book, and a resource for teachers to help inspire children to create their own books about alphabets, and their knowledge of their reading, world, and interest.

This book was okay, but nothing made it stand out from other abecedarians. The art was fine but not too memorable.

I loved this book and I could definitely see this being checked out A LOT at my library. I will highly recommend this book for my library to purchase for circulation purposes.

This was a nicely illustrated book but I felt that the point of it was more to be decorative than to teach children the ABC. I don't think it's an essential book for every library, but it could be a nice addition if you are looking for lovely art rather than a lesson in the alphabet.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

This is a cute alphabet book based on fairy tales. It rhymes and has some neat illustrations. It would be best if anyone reading this book was familiar with typical fairy tales.

This lovely alphabet picture book uses fairytale motifs to illustrate each letter. From ”A is for Apple whose poison is true”all the way to the sleeping child zzz, this book is delight for children of all ages.

This unbiased review was written after reading an advanced reader copy curtesy of the publishers and NetGalley.

Thank you NetGalley and Victoria Editing for the opportunity to check out this book!

Any time I see a book that mixes alphabets and one of my many favorite things (in this case, fairytales!) I have to scoop it up and check it out. I love the cover of this story, but felt that the images were darker (metaphorically and visually) than I expected. The writing was cute, but the rhyming seemed to vanish about 1/2 way in.

Fantastic! This is my kind of alphabet book. Clever, rhyming, with whimsical art. I even got a good chuckle out of the rhyme for “wish.”

This is the perfect alphabet book for kids who love magic and fairytales.

This is an absolutely delightful alphabet option, especially for fairy tale loving kiddos. The illustrations and lovely and I can see Emmy seven year old loving this even though she’s a bit old for it.

Thank you Sassy Lassie Designs for the copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Once Upon: A Fairytale Alphabet is a fun journey through the alphabet with words related to fairytales and magic. We get to see poisoned apples, scary forests, and a magic castle. The illustrations in this book are magical, the rhyming is adorable, and kids will love the references to some of their favorite stories! Delightful for young readers!

Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!

What a fun way to learn the alphabet! Fantastic connections to fairy tales and colorful illustrations to bring the book to life. XYZ connections were a pleasant surprise and it was just what my library needs for teaching alphabetical order.

Once Upon is an odd yet interesting alphabet book. I loved the choices for most of the alphabet examples. And the illustrations, while a bit dark and creepy, were still whimsical in nature. Despite it being a fairytale alphabet book, it didn't feel gendered solely towards girls. I think anyone could enjoy this one. My issue is the descriptions for the words chosen. They started out great, but it seemed that as you go through the book, the descirptions become shorter and shorter. Going from two sentence explanations to just "_ is for ___." I am also not sure what happened after the letter w since everything from that point just stopped making sense.

I’ve read a lot of fairytales in my life as a youth librarian so this alphabet book won my heart. I enjoyed the lovely rhymes which fit the beautiful illustrations perfectly. Children are sure to enjoy this book as a bedtime read aloud. The final illustration is especially fun as it includes items shown throughout the story. What a great addition to the alphabet book world!

This is a children's book showing fairytale and folklore tropes, told using the letters of the alphabet and easy to read text, through quirky illustrations. Some examples are: poison apples, birthday dragons, an ogre, a villain, sketchy forests, a raven, a unicorn and a thorn. Although this book is interesting, I found it a bit dark, and my daughter was a little bit scared by some of the beings in the book.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

I love this story. It's a magical way to learn the alphabet. I wish it was around when my boys were younger. I have a niece on the way. I would love to be able to get a copy for her.

It brought a bunch of fairytales together in a culmination of a magical learning tool.
