Thanks to Netgalley and Owlkids Books for the ARC of this!
My 7 year old enjoyed reading this one with me, and we both were surprised by a number of the ways that two animals turned out to be alike. It was written at a good level and the art was cute. I liked that it made us both think hard about how the animals given might be similar.
Odd Couples is a very fun and engaging book that will leave kids hungry for more! I have a feeling that this book will become a fast favorite among our young patrons. Thank you NetGalley and Maria Birmingham for the ARC copy.
This book has so many interesting facts about animals. My youngest daughter is sharing the information with others, especially with how a giraffe and a hummingbird are alike. Not only do we get a fun fact in how pairs of animals are similar there are also facts about the specific animals. The pictures were colorful and vivid. We have read this book a few times now! Thank you to NetGalley and OwlKids Books for an advanced copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own!
A great educational book to teach child and even adults about Animals . I loved the ideas that showing children that even through you might look different, you still may have something in common.
The book was done in a great and engaging manner and the illustrations were colorful and perfect.
I just reviewed Odd Couples by Maria Birmingham. #OddCouples #NetGalley
An engaging and interesting look at how animals evolve similar ways to respond to their enviornment.
What on earth could a tiny bee hummingbird have in common with a huge giraffe? What similar trait could be shared by a wombat and a seahorse? And, what could a shark and a snail possibly have in common?
You'll learn these, and plenty of other fascinating facts about the animal kingdom in this book. The bold, colorful illustrations by Raz Latif add to the fun.
I received an electronic ARC from Owlkids Books through NetGalley.
Birmingham shares so much information in this short book. Readers meet animals from all over the globe that each have something in common with their partner. the information is shared in short paragraphs so younger readers can process this also. It can be a great read aloud where everyone tries to guess what they have in common before turning the page and discovering the facts. A glossary is included at the end to help with unknown vocabulary. Can be read in one sitting or pulled out to look at two animals at a time.
Did you know that koala bears have fingerprints indistinguishable from humans and that snails, like sharks, have thousands of sharp teeth? Okay maybe you did but I did not and I have sooo enjoyed sharing this knowledge as I recommend you read, buy, and give as gifts to ANY age, "Odd Couples" by Maria Birmingham. Written in a style comfortable for children, it will also engage the adult reader, and, depending on the age, encourage researching to learn even more. Charming, informative, Well done.
Odd Couples is a very creative book that kids won’t want to put down. It is full of fantastic facts and fun, but odd, pairs of animals. The included glossary is a great addition. Kids will not get bored with this book, and they will learn quite a bit, too. A new favorite book for many young readers!
As a youth librarian, I found that young children (especially boys) crave nonfiction, so I was happy to see this interesting picture book. I’m an adult reader and I learned new facts about every “odd couple” in the book. Simple illustrations pair well with the intriguing text. If I still purchased books for a youth library, this would be a definite purchase and one I would recommend reluctant readers.
