Madison Rivera has the world on a string. Harvard Law School is hers to conquer and she is killing it. Then we start to see the cracks. Her little brother Danny has a way of impacting her life without trying and not in a good way. The judge she works for -- Kathy Conroy --surely must be above reproach. Or is she? Seeing the story from both Madison and Kathy's perspectives give a much more comprehensive and fascinating picture. I listened to this on audio (well done, Sarah Mollo-Christensen) and read from my digital copy in between. Those 11 hours/384 pages whipped by. This is yet another page-turner from Michele Campbell that I give high marks for creativity. Lucy the black cat really helped persuade me to add that last star. Plenty of twists and turns and a satisfying ending, too.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you, NetGalley, for an advanced audiobook copy of The Intern for a review.
I really enjoyed The Intern, but there really wasn’t anything *new* about it. It’s a story line that’s been done before, and while it was done well, I don’t think it’ll stay with me long term.
A solid 3 ⭐️ read for me.

Madison Rivera is working her way through through Harvard Law School. She is doing well in her classes, she is on journal, but her next goal is to work with her professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy. After class one day Judge Conroy tells Madison she should apply for an internship in her chambers. Madison gets the job, only to find out that her brother has been arrested under suspicious circumstances, and Judge Conroy was assigned to the case. Madison begins to investigate the people involved in the case, uncovering a wide conspiracy involving Judge Conroy. The pair are drawn into a game of hiding their own secrets and trying to uncover the other's secrets as dangerous forces close in on them both.
The Intern was an enjoyable thriller with legal and crime genre elements. The book uses the dual perspectives of Madison and Judge Conroy very well to show the reader all of the things the two women are hiding from each other. Michele Campbell did a great job slowly building out a very complex plot before bringing it all back together for a satisfying conclusion. As a law student myself, the opening few chapters definitely hit very close to home, with the pressure of school and extracurriculars on top of life and competition with peers hitting very close to home. Even as Madison gets swept up into these dangerous events, her focus on making sure she is ready for finals felt about right. I would recommend this book to someone wanting a thriller with complex main characters, even if their decision making got frustrating at times, and thrillers with a legal focus.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for a copy of The Intern in exchange for an honest review.

Fast-paced storyline, definitely a quick read! While some of the plot twists were predictable, I still enjoyed this sharply written novel by Michele Campbell. I appreciated the varied POVs, the character development, and the mix of drama and thriller. This was my first Campbell book, but it certainly won't be my last! Highly recommend!
Thank you Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to review The Intern before its October 3, 2023 release date in exchange for an honest review.

The Intern by Michelle Campbell is a criminal law thriller that delivers a mix of suspense and legal drama. While it has its moments of intrigue, there are aspects of the book that prevent me from giving it a higher rating. On the positive side, Campbell seems to demonstrate a solid understanding of the legal world, and her characters are multi-dimensional. The pacing of the story affecting my rating, however, and there are some predictable "twists and turns".
The Intern is a decent read for those who enjoy legal thrillers and crime dramas. It offers a good dose of suspense and legal intrigue to keep you engaged. However, it falls short of achieving greatness due to some pacing and plot issues. It's a three-star book in my opinion, worth picking up if you're a fan of the genre, but not without its flaws.

Have you been watching Suits? I'm loving the tv series, so this book was perfect for my current lawyer obsession.
Madison, a Harvard law student lands the internship of her dreams working for Judge Conroy but things quickly unravel when her brother is arrested and Judge Conroy is the Judge on his case.
I really enjoyed this book. I love Michele Campbell's books because they are all a slow burn where it feels like we are getting to know the characters really well, but the story is also building quietly.
I alternated between the audio and physical copy of this book and I would recommend the audio.

Madison just landed the internship of a lifetime for a charismatic and reputable judge. But her secret regarding her brother's arrestation could destroy her career. When the judge goes missing after accusing her of corruption, Madison goes on a quest to find answers.
The plot of this legal mystery/thriller had me very curious. I recognized all of the ingredients for an unputdownable thriller, but I felt it was dragging and it kept loosing my attention. The main character's hesitations about everything were drawn out and redundant. The relationship between Madison and the judge is questionable at best. Madison's naiveté was annoying, it felt she was being deliberately oblivious and stupid. Safe to say this one was not for me. But I have read many great reviews, so if you're looking for a quick legal/crime/political thriller, it just might be for you! The narration in the audio book was great.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Alright this is crazy. A law student is taking a class from her hero, a federal judge. After class one day the judge invites her to be an intern in her law office. Of course our girl signs right up!
However, her mom is expecting her to save her brother from prison when he gets caught with a bag of drugs. He is mostly innocent but it doesn't matter.
The judge is also dealing with some insane stuff.
They both get in deep and their lives are in danger. I love the devotion to the cat!
Girl power!

Madison, a second year Harvard Law student, gets an internship working for Judge Kathryn Conroy who she has looked up to for a long time. When getting hired, she left out the fact that her brother, Danny, has been arrested and that his case is before Judge Conroy. Danny goes missing, but before he did, he told Madison that he thought Judge Conroy was a corrupt judge. While working for Judge Conroy, Madison starts to snoop and begins to uncover more and more and Judge Conroy starts to believe that Madison is working for the FBI.
Man, this book was crazy suspenseful. The first part started out a little crazy with their instant friendship as a professor and student, but now it makes sense after reading the timeline of things that Judge Conroy went through. The beginning flowed better to me because it was both Madison and Judge Conroy in the story at the same time and then towards the middle I got confused with the flashbacks that majorly were about Judge Conroy’s past. I knew from the beginning something funky was up with her bookkeeper lady, Nancy, I just had a bad feeling about her. This story really just drew me in and made want to keep reading and going. I listened it in less than 24 hours.
Thanks to @netgalley, @macmillan.audio , and @michelecampbellbooks for this advanced audio copy. I was so excited about it that I even got it in my BOTM box for September.

Intern meets her teacher Judge, applies for her internship, only to then realize she is presiding over her brother's case after he was falsely accused...
The insta relationship between the law student Madison and Judge Conroy felt too rushed and unbelievable for me. The house sitting part was cringe-y, but when she asked her to move in "for her protection" after barely meeting?! I had to put it down.

The Intern is a fast-paced thriller that keeps you guessing. Law student, Madison, gets an intern ship with her favorite judge, Kathryn Conroy. However, both Madison and Kathryn have secrets and the internship of Madison's dreams isn't all what it seems, as she has no idea of Kathryn's past. This book has cops, the FBI, crooked cops, family, and law school. At one point, I felt overwhelmed by the going pack to the past then suddenly switching to the present. Besides that, this was a great audio book to listen to and the narrator did a great job!

I wasn't too sure about this book at the very beginning. I personally wanted to strangle Madison's mom for how she seemed to put all of her focus on her son while completely ignoring Madison's needs and feelings. (That's just a "me" problem though!) It wasn't until I got to the second part (Kathryn's POV) that the story really sucked me in. After that... I wouldn't have been able to stop listening even if forced to. I'm glad I was alone in the office and no one witnessed me banging on the desk and shouting at pivotal points in the book. So. Good!

The story didn't grip me as I read. This remained unfortunately quite unmemorable despite an intriguing concept.

Thanks NetGalley for the chance to review this ARC audiobook. I thought this book was amazing. This book to me was more than a thriller, it had depth and story. The characters were detailed and the story had layer and layers. I loved it!

I really enjoyed the audiobook version of The Intern by Michele Campbell. The main character, Madison Rivera, is in law school and lands an internship working for her favorite professor and judge. Madison is brilliant with case law, but is naive in the way that the real world works. She must quickly learn to ask questions, who to trust, and what to doubt. If she does not, it could result in death!
Thank you @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for allowing me to listen to this audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
(This review was uploaded to Barnes & Noble's website as well)

The Intern by Michele Campbell is a fascinating, fast-paced novel about a Harvard law student who becomes enmeshed with her idol, her professor and federal judge, who may have nefarious ties.
Madison Rivera is an ambitious and clever second-year law student who is invited to intern for a federal judge, Kathryn Conroy. She quickly realizes things are not as they seem. At the same time, her brother has been falsely accused of a federal narcotics crime, and he may face 10 years in prison.
I loved the dual perspectives of two strong women. We're not sure who can be trusted, and the novel moves swiftly. Also pondered are how family, class, and background play a role in our lives. The audiobook narration is fantastic, with Sarah Mollo Christensen reading all the voices.
Thank you, NetGalley, and the publishers for providing this ebook and audiobook ARC. All thoughts are my own.

I've missed Michele Campbell and her twisty,, never-quite-sure-what's-going-to-happen writing style. With The Intern, my opinion of Michele as one of my must-read, must-binge authors is further confirmed. I loved this book, right from the very first sentence. The interplay between a federal judge with secrets to hide and an intern trying to further her education while also trying to help her brother is fascinating, and, the more their lives become intertwined, the more addictive the plot becomes. The narration is absolutely perfect, and I was spellbound, absolutely needing to know what happened next!

Wow this book was mind boggling! A huge thanks goes out to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an advanced copy of this audiobook because I absolutely loved it!
Right from the jump this book had me stressed! There was family drama, dirty crime and even dirtier people involved - if you know me at all you know that means I was eating this up immediately. 😂 I really liked Madison as our main character in a story like this; she was smart and witty but also just down on her luck enough to make some questionable choices and I frankly loved that about her. I could really say the same for Kathryn as well!
All in all I totally recommend this and hope it gets the hype it deserves!

“Striking a plea deal was sort of like romance. Playing hard to get could be an effective tactic, but only if you didn’t take it too far.”
Harvard law student Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested on drug charges, and Conroy is the judge on his case.
When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal?
Woohooo it has been a hot minute since I’ve read a legal thriller and this one hit it out of the park. I feel like I just watched a movie!
The audio was so so so good. The narrator @sarahmollo had me fooled as I thought it was Karissa Vacker initially, who is one of my favs! She just nailed it. This book is very fast paced with a lot of moving parts and a lot of characters and never once did I feel lost or confused. I highly recommend this one!
Thank you to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio, and the author for the ALC.

Madison has landed her ideal position as Judge Conroy's intern, but she's keeping a secret that could destroy her credibility and potentially, her future career. Judge Conroy is hiding some secrets of her own, though, and the two women will go tit-for-tat in an increasingly dangerous game. Can they figure out a way to save both of them , or will one have to take the fall?
What a tangled web this plot was! In the best kind of way. I often roll my eyes when books include a specific genre/theme, but I think it was done really effectively in The Intern, and I didn't find myself turned off. I'm being intentionally vague so as to not give away part of the plot, sorry 🤣
Anyway, this story roped me in immediately, and I was engaged the entire time. I think the ending is great, and the book itself is relatively unique in plot and structure. Definitely recommend this if you like thrillers that don't follow a set pattern!
Thank you to Michele Campbell, St. Martin's Press, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for my advance audio copy.
