The Intern is part legal drama and part cat and mouse suspense.
Madison, a law student, takes an internship with a judge that is assigned to her brother’s case. She is hoping to get information to help clear his name, but instead finds herself tangled in a dangerous web.
.
The narrator was really great. I’ve listened to other work narrated by her and was excited she was reading this book. It was well done.

Madison has not had the easiest of childhoods. She is now at Harvard law school and gets the opportunity to intern for her professor who is her idol. Kathryn Conroy has taken Madison under her wing.
Madison’s mothers lets her know her brother has been arrested and it’s seems unreal. He swears he was set up. She realizes Kathryn is the judge on her brothers case. Madison’s mother is pressing her to find out more with her connection. Will Madison disclose to Kathryn her connection to the defendant?
Could the judge be setting up Madison? Is her brother guilty? This novel had so many twists that made for a fast paced novel for this lazy Sunday afternoon.
Thank you MacMillian Audio and Netgalley for this advanced audiobook. The narrator Sarah Mollo-Christensen was fabulous! This was my first by this author and I look forward to more by her. This novel is out October 3, 2023.

If my love for mob stories and legal thrillers had a baby it would be The Intern by Michele Campbell. The twisting tales of Madison Rivera and Judge Kathryn Conroy had me on the edge of my seat cheering for both women as their lives intertwined and their secrets came to life. Each of the women had their motivations behind why they were playing a dangerous game, both with each other and the corrupted individuals around them.
The dual POV between the Judge and Madison didn’t take away any of the suspense as I eagerly listened to find out how this would all play out. Usually, dual POVs for me feel unnecessary at times, but Campbell artfully showed each of the women and gave them their own distinct voices. Listening to the audiobook, Sarah Mollo-Christensen gave a solid performance in the narration and added to Campbell’s characterization and individualization of the Judge and Madison.
I haven’t read any other books by Michele Campbell, but I will be quickly adding some to my TBR. Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy to listen to.

Hats off to the narrator on this one! She did a great job; I sometimes cringe when women read in mens voices or when men read in womens.....but the did wonderful, no cringing at all! I really enjoyed the story and the way it unfolded. Getting into the back story of the judge was fascinating and told perfectly. I really enjoyed this; I think it's classify it as a legal thriller. I'm glad I chose the hardcover as my Book Of The Month selection. 4.5 stars :)

This was the best book I have read in a while! It was interesting, the twists were at times expected and in the next breathe completely unexpected. It was truly enjoyable and even though it wrapped us nicely it left me invested to want more!
The Intern switches narrators back and forth between Madison, the Intern, and Judge Kathryn Conroy. Madison has always looked up to Judge Conroy and was thrilled to have a chance to work with her. When their lives collide it challenges everything she thinks she knows.
The backstory and present day switches were smooth and really enhanced the story. The characters are strong resilient women which I enjoy but don't see often enough in books. I would give this book more than 5 stars.
I was thrilled to get the netgalley audiobook copy and enjoyed it so much I choose it as my book of the month and recommended it to numerous friends.

Drama!!! Intrigue!!! A great audiobook narrator!!! A Puerto Rican protagonist!!!!!!!! What more could you ask for? Kept me hooked with a satisfying ending. My first Michele Campbell book, but won’t be my last.
Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley!

I really enjoyed listening to this one! The narration was great and the story was so captivating. I loved the plot and even though the book started off slow about half way I could not put it down! It has all the aspects of a great thriller and I loved the twists and turns the story took. The other thing I liked was that we got both POVs- I enjoyed reading Kathryn’s perspective and the insights it gave us to her past. I loved the law student judge relationship and will definitely be recommending this one! Thank you so much for the ALC!

This was so intense and I devoured it! Kathryn Conroy was such an interesting character who kept me guessing. Hearing the story of her past woven in throughout the audiobook worked well and shed a lot of light on how she ended up in her position. The book was a great mix of unique characters with great character development, the legal system, dirty cops, corruption and more. Boston was the perfect setting. There were so many twists and turns and I was on the edge of my seat for most of the story. The narrator was fantastic and this one deserves more than five stars in my opinion.

My only complaint about this is that it’s recommended as a thriller. Mystery, sure. Suspense, yea. Thriller, no. If I had gone into it knowing that, I would have enjoyed it more, I think.
The narration was fantastic! I tend to get lost in dialogue during audiobooks, but the narrator was great at keeping the voices distinguished.

Thanks to NetGalley for the arc audiobook!
This book was great! Fast paced and kept you interested to learn more of the story! The perspectives from both main characters builds up intrigue and offers background as you go. Only dislike, and a very minor one, was the ending m! It was awesome but wish it offered a little more. Loved this book!

I was not a fan of the audiobook narrator at first, but as the story progressed, I started appreciating the narration more. The story itself was captivating. At first, I did not appreciate the flash backs as I should, but then I saw how they added to the story. The main character, Madison, seemed a little whiny at the beginning of the book. For that reason, I didn't think much of her, but the character development was there. Although Madison didn't always do the "right" thing, she always had her family in mind. Let me just say I'm glad I'm not in her shoes. She had a lot to lose. Judge Kathryn Conroy was a very interesting character. Very nuanced in a way. It must be hard to live your life when your past keeps catching up with you and you just have to try to live one step ahead of it. That's what made her stronger even though it was clearly her weakness because it made her sacrifice so much.
The great thing about this book is the pace. It's moderately fast...I didn't feel lost. I'm not going to mention any twists because I usually see them coming while reading thrillers. Let's just say it was well done and I was satisfied with the ending. Oh, I can't forget to mention that glorious black cat named Lucy. I could picture her and her antics as I read the pages.
Many thanks to Netgalley and MacmillanAudio for the audiobook in exchange for a review.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the free audio book in exchange for my honest review. This was narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen who did a fantastic job with all of the characters. I thought there had to be 2 different narrators and was surprised to find out it was just one!
Madison Rivera is a Harvard Law student who has what she believes to be a chance encounter with her law profession, a sitting federal judge, and obtains a law clerk internship as a result. However, things are not as they seem with the Judge. Madison has her own secrets including her brother's recent drug conviction in the Judge's court, something she did not disclose at her interview. The Judge has her own secrets and a lot of problems as well. As the story progresses and things start to unravel for both women, its a race to see how the game of cat and mouse will end up.
This is a fast paced, suspenseful, thriller with many twists. I did see most of the events unfolding prior to reading but it did not take away from the story. The character development was good and the building up of the suspense was even better.
Definitely a great read!

If you enjoy character-driven legal thrillers, this one is for you! This was my second read by Campbell and I am definitely a fan. Her writing and plotting are outstanding and the cliffhangers she throws at you in this one… So good.
The Intern was an intensely captivating read. Everything was so well executed. The pacing, the dual POV, the development, and the many twists throughout that had me intensely turning the pages trying to solve the mystery.
What I enjoyed;
🏛️ Cat—and-mouse thriller
🏛️ Legal drama
🏛️ Mystery/Suspence
🏛️ Dual POV
Sarah Molly-Christensen’s narration was terrific! She did an amazing job with both POV’s and portraying the tone of the story.
Pub date: 10/3/23. Definitley add this one to your TBR!
A huge thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchagne for my honest review.

While legal thrillers often require some suspension of disbelief when it comes to certain plot points, this novel left me feeling like pretty much all of the story was fantastical. The plot was simply too farfetched to make for enjoyable reading. One positive, the narrator was easy to listen to.

The Intern is a thrilling read about a young law student who takes an internship in her Judge professor's chambers because she hopes to get information and help for her brother who is facing serious jail time. This book has twists and turns and keeps your attention throughout! I couldn't stop listening- I had to know what happened next!

This was a fun one. It’s a game of cat
& mouse…spy versus spy…where no one knows who they can trust.
I really liked the main character Madison and how the story developed between Madison and Kathy.
I couldn’t imagine being stuck in a situation like Kathy or Madison. Each person had a different role to play to someone else…someone they’d do anything for and that, well…it complicates things.
This one wasn’t my fav by this author but it was still good. I just didn’t like the Harvard / Judge angle as much as I liked A Stranger On The Beach. I just liked that premise better. Total preference thing for me.
I def recommend this one.
The audio narrator was excellent as well

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ARC. This was my first read by this author and although I enjoyed the first half of the story, it lost me by the end. I wasn’t a fan of the “mob” aspect it took on.
I did enjoy the narrator of this audiobook.

It pains me to give any Michele Campbell work a 2 star rating. She has written several amazing books, and when I saw this one drop on Netgalley, I couldn't hit the request button fast enough. Sadly, I disliked this one so much it was almost a DNF. Only my moral contract with Netgalley to provide an honest review kept me listening.
There was so much about the plot I disliked, but before even getting to that, I have to comment on the medium - audio book. I am a huge lover of them and have been listening to books since the 80s on cassette tapes. I know how important a narrator is when telling the story. This narrator was just not good. Very breathy. Very over the top. A nasal twang which was distracting and broke my brain. Perhaps if I had read this one to myself it may have earned a slightly higher rating, so do with that what you will.
The premise was beyond believable and when every single part of the story requires suspension of belief (and it's not the fantasy genre), it just doesn't fly. Here we are to believe that a 2nd year law student is selected for a highly coveted intern position with a female judge who acts like her bestie. The other interns in the office warn of the judge's aloofness to the clerks, but about a minute after being hired, she is dining with the judge and moving in to housesit. There is corruption on all fronts including the intern lying seconds after getting the job. Cause that's what we gals do.
I hated every character which makes a book hard to like. Why should I care about the plot if I don't care what happens to the people in the story?
Will I read the next Campbell book? Absolutely. With bells on. But, The Intern is now something I'm going to try to forget.

I really enjoyed this! Much more than I expected to. I’ve never really read a legal thriller like this one. I was completely invested in the characters and the plot. It goes very in-depth into both Madison’s and Kathy’s lives and their backgrounds and how they ended up where they are now. I loved watching these two women connect and intertwine throughout the story in different ways. This is a book about power, corruption, and the intricacies of the justice system. It also delves into complex family dynamics and the vulnerabilities of student life. It shows the dangers and realities of putting certain people that we admire onto a pedestal in our minds, particularly authority figures, and then the fallout of realizing they are only human too. The plot is harrowing and high-stakes. I was hooked the entire time. The audiobook is also well done and I thought the narrator did a great job of portraying the tone of the story and the voices of the characters. Highly recommend!

This legal thriller had layers upon layers of deception, blackmail, and twists.
Madison is a student in law school interning for Judge Kathryn Conroy. She idolizes Conroy, who is the reason she decided to go to law school in the first place. The one problem? Madison’s brother wars arrested on a drug charge, and he tells Madison that the cop, lawyer, and judge on his case were all dirty…and the judge is none other than Conroy. Little lies build up to bigger ones as we learn about Conroy’s background and follow what happens to Madison in the present day.
The character development was fantastic here, with both female characters being complex and three dimensional. Each woman agonizes over her decisions, weighing out the risks and benefits of every action they take.
The plot was very cat and mouse, with multiple characters and storylines going on. It got a bit confusing over audio at times with so many different people involved. The narrator did a great job with the various character voices and with her intonation.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest opinion. I’d give this 3.5 rounding to 4.
