My only complaint about this is that it’s recommended as a thriller. Mystery, sure. Suspense, yea. Thriller, no. If I had gone into it knowing that, I would have enjoyed it more, I think.
The narration was fantastic! I tend to get lost in dialogue during audiobooks, but the narrator was great at keeping the voices distinguished.
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc audiobook!
This book was great! Fast paced and kept you interested to learn more of the story! The perspectives from both main characters builds up intrigue and offers background as you go. Only dislike, and a very minor one, was the ending m! It was awesome but wish it offered a little more. Loved this book!
I was not a fan of the audiobook narrator at first, but as the story progressed, I started appreciating the narration more. The story itself was captivating. At first, I did not appreciate the flash backs as I should, but then I saw how they added to the story. The main character, Madison, seemed a little whiny at the beginning of the book. For that reason, I didn't think much of her, but the character development was there. Although Madison didn't always do the "right" thing, she always had her family in mind. Let me just say I'm glad I'm not in her shoes. She had a lot to lose. Judge Kathryn Conroy was a very interesting character. Very nuanced in a way. It must be hard to live your life when your past keeps catching up with you and you just have to try to live one step ahead of it. That's what made her stronger even though it was clearly her weakness because it made her sacrifice so much.
The great thing about this book is the pace. It's moderately fast...I didn't feel lost. I'm not going to mention any twists because I usually see them coming while reading thrillers. Let's just say it was well done and I was satisfied with the ending. Oh, I can't forget to mention that glorious black cat named Lucy. I could picture her and her antics as I read the pages.
Many thanks to Netgalley and MacmillanAudio for the audiobook in exchange for a review.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the free audio book in exchange for my honest review. This was narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen who did a fantastic job with all of the characters. I thought there had to be 2 different narrators and was surprised to find out it was just one!
Madison Rivera is a Harvard Law student who has what she believes to be a chance encounter with her law profession, a sitting federal judge, and obtains a law clerk internship as a result. However, things are not as they seem with the Judge. Madison has her own secrets including her brother's recent drug conviction in the Judge's court, something she did not disclose at her interview. The Judge has her own secrets and a lot of problems as well. As the story progresses and things start to unravel for both women, its a race to see how the game of cat and mouse will end up.
This is a fast paced, suspenseful, thriller with many twists. I did see most of the events unfolding prior to reading but it did not take away from the story. The character development was good and the building up of the suspense was even better.
Definitely a great read!

If you enjoy character-driven legal thrillers, this one is for you! This was my second read by Campbell and I am definitely a fan. Her writing and plotting are outstanding and the cliffhangers she throws at you in this one… So good.
The Intern was an intensely captivating read. Everything was so well executed. The pacing, the dual POV, the development, and the many twists throughout that had me intensely turning the pages trying to solve the mystery.
What I enjoyed;
🏛️ Cat—and-mouse thriller
🏛️ Legal drama
🏛️ Mystery/Suspence
🏛️ Dual POV
Sarah Molly-Christensen’s narration was terrific! She did an amazing job with both POV’s and portraying the tone of the story.
Pub date: 10/3/23. Definitley add this one to your TBR!
A huge thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchagne for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Mcmillon audio for this ARC!
This is such a good book!! Suspense suspense suspense!! So well written and not lacking in, yup you guessed it suspense lol. My first book my this author but will not be my last.
While legal thrillers often require some suspension of disbelief when it comes to certain plot points, this novel left me feeling like pretty much all of the story was fantastical. The plot was simply too farfetched to make for enjoyable reading. One positive, the narrator was easy to listen to.
The Intern is a thrilling read about a young law student who takes an internship in her Judge professor's chambers because she hopes to get information and help for her brother who is facing serious jail time. This book has twists and turns and keeps your attention throughout! I couldn't stop listening- I had to know what happened next!
This was a fun one. It’s a game of cat
& mouse…spy versus spy…where no one knows who they can trust.
I really liked the main character Madison and how the story developed between Madison and Kathy.
I couldn’t imagine being stuck in a situation like Kathy or Madison. Each person had a different role to play to someone else…someone they’d do anything for and that, well…it complicates things.
This one wasn’t my fav by this author but it was still good. I just didn’t like the Harvard / Judge angle as much as I liked A Stranger On The Beach. I just liked that premise better. Total preference thing for me.
I def recommend this one.
The audio narrator was excellent as well
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ARC. This was my first read by this author and although I enjoyed the first half of the story, it lost me by the end. I wasn’t a fan of the “mob” aspect it took on.
I did enjoy the narrator of this audiobook.
It pains me to give any Michele Campbell work a 2 star rating. She has written several amazing books, and when I saw this one drop on Netgalley, I couldn't hit the request button fast enough. Sadly, I disliked this one so much it was almost a DNF. Only my moral contract with Netgalley to provide an honest review kept me listening.
There was so much about the plot I disliked, but before even getting to that, I have to comment on the medium - audio book. I am a huge lover of them and have been listening to books since the 80s on cassette tapes. I know how important a narrator is when telling the story. This narrator was just not good. Very breathy. Very over the top. A nasal twang which was distracting and broke my brain. Perhaps if I had read this one to myself it may have earned a slightly higher rating, so do with that what you will.
The premise was beyond believable and when every single part of the story requires suspension of belief (and it's not the fantasy genre), it just doesn't fly. Here we are to believe that a 2nd year law student is selected for a highly coveted intern position with a female judge who acts like her bestie. The other interns in the office warn of the judge's aloofness to the clerks, but about a minute after being hired, she is dining with the judge and moving in to housesit. There is corruption on all fronts including the intern lying seconds after getting the job. Cause that's what we gals do.
I hated every character which makes a book hard to like. Why should I care about the plot if I don't care what happens to the people in the story?
Will I read the next Campbell book? Absolutely. With bells on. But, The Intern is now something I'm going to try to forget.
I really enjoyed this! Much more than I expected to. I’ve never really read a legal thriller like this one. I was completely invested in the characters and the plot. It goes very in-depth into both Madison’s and Kathy’s lives and their backgrounds and how they ended up where they are now. I loved watching these two women connect and intertwine throughout the story in different ways. This is a book about power, corruption, and the intricacies of the justice system. It also delves into complex family dynamics and the vulnerabilities of student life. It shows the dangers and realities of putting certain people that we admire onto a pedestal in our minds, particularly authority figures, and then the fallout of realizing they are only human too. The plot is harrowing and high-stakes. I was hooked the entire time. The audiobook is also well done and I thought the narrator did a great job of portraying the tone of the story and the voices of the characters. Highly recommend!
This legal thriller had layers upon layers of deception, blackmail, and twists.
Madison is a student in law school interning for Judge Kathryn Conroy. She idolizes Conroy, who is the reason she decided to go to law school in the first place. The one problem? Madison’s brother wars arrested on a drug charge, and he tells Madison that the cop, lawyer, and judge on his case were all dirty…and the judge is none other than Conroy. Little lies build up to bigger ones as we learn about Conroy’s background and follow what happens to Madison in the present day.
The character development was fantastic here, with both female characters being complex and three dimensional. Each woman agonizes over her decisions, weighing out the risks and benefits of every action they take.
The plot was very cat and mouse, with multiple characters and storylines going on. It got a bit confusing over audio at times with so many different people involved. The narrator did a great job with the various character voices and with her intonation.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest opinion. I’d give this 3.5 rounding to 4.
AMAZING!!
I can't write much because it'd all be spoilers and this book is too well done to spoil - just read it!
The commentary is so artful, so well done - *chef's kiss.* It's subtle and beautiful and just knocks you over.
The characters are so real and multidimensional and fascinating - they're very different from me, but I understand them all.
I could *NOT* put this down. I'm not even a thriller fan, but I was so hooked from the get-go and there's just twist after twist, reveal after reveal, making this so much more complex and interesting than it seemed (which is saying something, because it started off strong).
AHHHHHHH I'm just sad it's over. Read it!
Thanks, NetGalley and Macmillan, for the free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review (I've given 2 star reviews to ARCs before, so my love of this book has nothing to do with the early read).
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillian Audio for the chance to listen to an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Intern by Michele Campbell will be released on October 3rd, 2023.
This was an excellent book, and, honestly, I found the plot to be so unique. We have a corrupt justice system, a law intern who is trying to help her brother, and, of course, some murder. I listened to the story via audiobook, which I think helped with the immersion into the story. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the whole story, couldn't stop listening!
If you are looking for an engaging read that is a little more different than the usual court procedural/thriller book, definitely consider picking this one up! Also, for a debut book? Excellent.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC!
The Intern is an intriguing tale of deceit, karma, and the lengths one will go to for family. Dual POVs and parts taking place in the distant past, not so distant past and present this book had me on edge of my seat wondering who to believe, who to trust and hoping for the best possible outcome for the characters. Some of the character decisions were frustrating in the beginning, but rang true with their motives. A satisfying read that will keep you ping-ponging on which characters to root for and have you on edge to the very end.
The Intern by Michele Campbell
Narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen
This was a popcorn thriller for me, it was an entertaining nailbiter but I also threw my popcorn at the screen in my head since the Madison and her brother, Danny, were too naive for words. At least at the beginning of the book, surely they've learned a few life lessons by the end of the book. Sometimes smart doesn't translate to having common sense.
Madison Rivera has the chance to intern for Judge Kathryn Conroy and Madison can't stand to give up that chance. But her brother, Danny, has just been arrested and the judge for the case is Conroy. Madison already has a big chip on her shoulder concerning her brother. She resents that their mother seems to always put him first and expects Madison to do so, too. I can see where Madison and Danny got their bad decision making skills. Madison is between a rock and a hard place with the demands to do whatever her mother tells her to do and not blowing up her law career.
So with a bit of omitting of vital information, fibbing, and other not good ideas, now Madison is Conroy's intern and the hot water she was in has started to boil. As we are watching Madison realize she's in a mess she can't get out of, we get to see things from Conroy's POV and her position isn't a good one, either. She's been in trouble for a very long time. Are Madison and Conroy on such opposing sides that one will have to go down to to save the other? Will both of them end up on the losing end of a bad situation getting worse? Is there any hope of saving both of them? I'm not sure everything that happens in this story is plausible so I didn't think too hard about the legal details. This is an action packed, nerve-wracking thriller that seems to have no good answers. The narration is very good with the men sounding like men even though the narrator is a woman, so I will be sure to look for this narrator, again.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.
This was a fast paced legal thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. I had both a digital copy as well as an audiobook. The narration was wonderful on the audiobook. This book was unputdownable, and kept me up past my bedtime because I just had to know what was going to happen next. Solid legal thriller!
In The Intern, Madison has scored an elite position as an intern working in a Federal Judge’s chambers. But Madison has a secret: her brother has pending charges in front of the very same judge. But Judge Kathryn Conroy has secrets of her own, secrets that she desperately wants to stay buried. As Madison and the judge circle each other in an attempt to get to the whole truth and nothing but the truth, outside parties are at play to pit them against each other- but if they both want to come out of this encounter alive, they might have to work together instead.
This concept grabbed my attention from the first I heard of the book, partially because I love a good cat-and-mouse thriller, but also because the plot strikes very close to my day job working in the justice system. The Intern is a whip-smart dual-POV novel that will have you questioning everything that you’ve read in order to suss out the truth. The story is told in five parts, alternating between present and past events from Madison and Kathryn’s perspectives. While the layout of the book was fascinating, I did find it a bit confusing to follow along with, especially in audio format. If there were different narrators for each POV, I think it would have assuaged the confusion. As it was, it was difficult to keep up with who in the story knew what.
I really enjoyed reading this and binged the entire book in a single day. I would recommend this to legal thriller readers, provided that you can suspend your disbelief if needed. It's fiction! It's not meant to be exactly like real life! Live a little!
Thank you to MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review of The Intern, which publishes on October 3rd.
I enjoyed this twisty thriller - I listened to it and really liked the narrator.
Madison is in law school and admires one of her teachers, a judge named Kathryn Conroy. Madison's brother has recently been wrongly accused and sent to jail for drug charges, and Madison's mother is hoping she can sway the Judge to help. Madison becomes an intern for the Judge, and soon develops a closer relationship with her.
This book is full of twists and went in directions I did not expect. Overall it kept me guessing, and I enjoyed the ending.
Madison is an endearing character, and it is hard to watch her make missteps. A lot of the characters in the book are pretty shady and unlikeable, which adds to the suspense.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book!
