This was such a fun, fast-paced legal thriller with drama all rolled into one. This was my first book by Michele Campbell, but I will definitely be reading more.

This was even more enjoyable via audiobook. The narrator, Sarah Mollo Christensen, did a fantastic job with a multiple POV.

This is full of some twists and turns, and when I thought it was predicted, I fell short.

Thank you, NetGalley and MacmillanAudio, for giving me an ALC in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy of this book.
I liked most of this book.
I gotta say, the suspense and overall vibe were in sync, but I felt like some things could've been a bit more cohesive.
I liked the two main characters- Madison and Kathryn, who both had their own agendas and plans to fight for what they think is right.
I did feel like there was something missing, a piece of the plot that just didn't come together for me in the end.
However, I do think this was a great thriller/suspense with a pretty good storyline. Could definitely make the cut for the "How To Get Away With Murder" story arc.

Madison is a law student who wants to impress her professor and Judge Katherine Conroy. An internship opens up in the Judges chambers and Madison is eager to get the position. But her brother was just arrested and the sentencing judge just so happens to be Conroy. The thing is, her brother claims he’s innocent and he was set up. Could Judge Conroy be dirty? Or is Madison’s brother lying? After all, he’s been in trouble off and on his whole life.

But the Judge isn’t who she seems. She’s also in trouble. People are controlling her and she must escape the hold they have on her without loosing her life.

I enjoyed this book. I liked the law perspective. I liked that this book kept me guessing. I actually liked the intermonalouge Madison had with herself as she was making decisions. I enjoyed getting to know the judge, after all life isn’t always what it seems. I was on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding in a few chapters towards the end. And the ending was perfect.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an ARC audiobook. The narrator did a great time telling the story in both Madison and Kathy’s POVs.

The Intern
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.2
Author: Michele Campbell

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

My thoughts:

Synopsis: Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her? As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. I had both the audio and digital copy and favored the audio version. Madison has always admired Judge Conroy and when the opportunity arises to intern in her court, she is grateful for the opportunity. Then Madison’s brother Danny gets rolled on a drug possession and before he is officially sentenced, he goes missing in the prison system, she uses the intern opportunity to learn more about her brother’s case. In doing so, does this dig her down a deeper rabbit hole? The research into her brother’s case leads her to Judge Conroy, what secrets will she uncover here?

The story is narrated by both Madison and Judge Conroy in a dual narration, with past flashbacks. Both of our MCs are unrelateable narrators and entrusted into the dark part of legal world. Madison is in law school to become a lawyer and works hard, is outspoken, and loyal to a fault. Judge Conroy has had someone controlling her actions for a very long time, but has been a very successful Judge, with a tough exterior. I really love the lengths that the author goes to, they are surprising, unpredictable, and balanced with being believable. Judge Conroy lives in a dangerous, secretive world and invites Madison in. The characters were created with depth, were mysterious, secretive, and intriguing. The author’s writing style was complex, multifaceted, suspenseful, twisty, and unpredictable. The story is a slow burn, building the characters, the plot is delivered in twisty layers, it flows nicely, and has excellent pacing. I love the flashbacks of Judge Conroy’s life and we get to see how she got herself in this dark world to begin with.

This legal thriller was compelling, intriguing, and really kept me guessing until the end. I devoured in less than two days. The narrator does an amazing job with voice variation, and truly brings the characters from the pages into a movie that I can clearly see. My only con was the vast amount of characters and how they connect to our MCs and the webbs you had to deconstruct, and what their purpose was in the storyline. Having said that, I still loved this book and would recommend to other readers, personally I would do the audio. I love that the author is from the legal world and provided a great emphasis on the judge and intern relationship.

This was an OK read. I don't get a lot of the hype leading up to it, I didn't enjoy it as much as most of the internet. It felt really predictable but was also all over the place with the pacing.

I received an advance audio copy. All thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed The Intern. It was the third novel I have read by Michele Campbell and I have really liked them all. She is an author I now feel confident in preordering whenever I see a new book come out. So the Intern was initially marketed to me as a Thriller. I guess it was a light thriller, but it was more of a mystery to my mind than a thriller. I enjoy Legal Thrillers, and The Intern, with its judicial system setting, was right up my alley. The strongest point of the novel was the relationship between Madison (the intern) and Kathryn (the judge). The story took a bit of willing disbelief to accept how they ended up working together, but once I accepted that, the rest of the story really took off for me. I have never enjoyed the whole "family over everything" plot device that so many books use, and in the case of Madison's mom pressuring her to do things that were completely inappropriate for her to do in the capacity of her job, I wanted to scream a few times. However, this novel was giving "The Firm" vibes and I loved that book way back in the day, so I really enjoyed this one.

If you are looking for an intense legal thriller, look no more. The Intern is an entertaining, gripping, edge of your edge-of-your-seat thriller that kept me riveted from start to finish. Michele Campbell expertly brings the drama through well-developed, realistic characters and an original, suspenseful plot. Twists and turns are sprinkled throughout leading to a jaw-dropping and satisfying conclusion. The narration added a layer of intrigue and intensity. Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my audiobook.

In #TheIntern, an outstanding #psychologicalthriller, #MicheleCampbell excels with multiple characters and a dodgy plot full of villains. I greatly enjoyed this #5starread!

This story is told by Harvard law student Madison and professor/Judge Kathryn Conroy. Madison is thrilled to receive an invite to interview to potentially intern for Conroy. At the same time, she discovers her brother is in some major legal trouble. Could she use her new job to help her brother?

Kathryn has a dark past filled with secrets. Is Madison using Kathryn, or is Kathryn using Madison? Either way, the judge has herself stuck in quite a hole. After she pulls Madison into her struggles, will they both be able find a way out?

Great narrators, and interesting story!

This book was… well, it was just okay for me. The first 70% was amazing, but then the way it ended was just a little lackluster.

This audiobook quickly had me hooked. Right from the beginning a mystery is a foot as Madison, our intern, finds out that her brother has landed in jail, charged with a crime he didn't commit. Madison lands her dream intership with federal judge Kathryn Conroy. However, Kathryn is the judge in charge of Madison's brothers case. Can Madison not blur the lines between work and family? And as she gets to know the judge better can Madison ignore the red flags that warn her the judge might not be as upstanding and admirable as she thought? This audiobook was performed well be the narrator in a tone that was fitting a thriller. While at parts the plot was a bit confusing the book was still a good read and the last fourth was an excellent twisty tell all. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy for an honest review.

The Intern

Went in blind listening to this novel since I had never heard or the author nor the book itself. The story is about a young Harvard law student who gets an internship with a famous judge. Madison is a normal student, but her family life more complicated since her father passed away and her brother is arrested for owning and planning to sell drugs. Everything in her life shifts when she hears that the famous judge she is working for and has admired all her life might be corrupt and was part of the crime her brother was falsely accused of.
I loved the fact that this story was nothing like I had previously read before. The character development was compelling and led us to understand better Madison and Kathryn’s decisions through life, as well as what led them to be where they are.
I LOVED the twist of Nancy being her old step-mother that she hated. It explained well why they had such a deep hatred for each other.
Also loved the fact that Lucy also gets a happy ending!
The novel is overall a very good fast-paced legal thriller!

In the end I really liked this book, although I didn't think I would feel that way when I started. I have to be very careful when I read anything having to do with the law because of my personal history, and that is especially true when law school is involved. That's just me and my sanity. The Intern is my third Michele Campbell read, and I enjoyed the previous two so much that I will do my best to grab pretty much anything she writes. I was similarly nervous starting It's Always the Husband, but there Michele Campbell quickly managed to assuage my fears. Ditto for The Intern. This is because The Intern is a work of fiction. Perusing some of the reviews it would seem that some people either don't get that, or, because Michele Campbell is a trained lawyer, they expected The Intern to be realistic fiction. Well, it's not. (Or, maybe it is. I never went to Harvard Law. I've never lived in Boston. I never clerked for a judge. I wouldn't know about those aspects of the story. Come to think of it, though, Michele Campbell's descriptions of the personalities at main Justice did make me smirk. Eh, food for thought.)

Anyway, moving on, I will continue to read Michele Campbell. I recommend The Intern to anyone who likes quickly paced thrillers with strong female personalities.

I would really, really like to thank Macmillan Audio for allowing me to experience this NetGalley audiobook. This is due to Sarah Mollo-Christensen's narration. I am still in complete awe that a single narrator read this entire work. Sarah Mollo-Christensen brought each and every character to life, some with such distinct voices that I double-checked to make sure she really was the only performer. I can only guess that her work elsewhere is what stops her from being as prolific as, say, Julia Whelan. Man, is Sarah Mollo-Christensen good! I do believe I could enjoy listening to her read the phone book. Friends, if you like full-cast narration, please do consider Sarah Mollo-Christensen's solo work. You should not be disappointed.

When Madison Rivera applied to this coveted internship, what she got was not at all what she expected.

I liked that our two main characters were both women who built their careers from nothing, even though they had secrets to hide. The judge was a particularly interesting character because she was certainly flawed. I couldn't wait to find out whether one of them was an unreliable narrator or if something else was at play.

I do wish we got a bit more about Madison's background. Since the author went into way more depth with the judge's background, Madison felt like a bit of a pawn throughout most of the book. Kathryn's development was so well done that it felt a bit unbalanced.

The ending is one you don't want to miss. If you like legal thrillers, this one will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat.

Fast paced, entertaining, and expertly narrated. A recommended purchase for collections where legal thrillers are popular.

Rating: 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my second of Michele Campbell and I have to say - I am a fan. I definitely want to read more of her work.

The Intern is a legal thriller that is told in dual POV between Madison Rivera, a law school student who gets a job as an intern for a well known judge, and the judge, Kathryn Conroy who may or may not be crooked.

This book is filled with lies and deception and both of our main characters are determined to keep the other in the dark as they work both for and against each other. The Intern is a super quick singable read that I found to be super addicting. I couldn’t stop listening because I needed to know what was going to happen. Both characters are flawed, but also so complex that you cant help but love them and root for them in the long run. There were perfectly placed twists in this one and the ending of the story was great.

I listened to this one via audiobook. The narrator Sarah Mollo-Christensen did a great job at distinguishing two different voices for each character. I found this one super easy to follow as well.

Overall, this was a great legal thriller to start the month off with. Again this is super fast paced and will have your eyes glued to the pages. Highly recommending it to all of my legal thriller or psychological thriller fans! The Intern was just released on 10/3, be sure to check this one out!

Huge thank you to NetGalley, Michele Campbell and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

I did not like this book. I couldn’t get into it and not even the audiobook helped. I picked it up and put it down many times. It was too slow paced.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillian Audio for the audio-ARC of The Intern.

Unfortunately, this book was a struggle for me to get through. Honestly, if it wasn't an ARC and I didn't feel like I needed to finish it, I would have DNF'd this after a couple of chapters.

To say this book started slow is an understatement. I kept hoping the plot would pick up, but it never did. I found it overly predictable and there was nothing new about this story. It's a premise that I feel has been done over and over again.

Madison, the main character, made me want to scream. We get it, you're a second-year law student and you must be the most naive almost-lawyer in the history of mankind. I have even worse things to say about the rest of the characters in the book, so maybe it's just better left unsaid at this point. Let's face it, I hated all the characters in the story except for Lucy (the cat).

The Intern felt longer than it needed to be, but maybe that's just me wishing it was over from almost the beginning. This was clearly not the book for me.

I really enjoy all the thrillers by Campbell. This was a good read, not my favorite by her but it was still good. There wasn't as much that shocked me, but it was still well written.
