We’ve been seeing an abundance strong women being featured in thrillers lately and this one was no different! It was quite the page turner and I was certainly curious to see where it was going!
It’s got a bit of a legal thriller vibe but we don’t quite get a courtroom setting. It starts off a bit slow but really picks up once things get rolling! It’s got a lot of juicy secrets, lies and corruptions which definitely sucks you in!
While I found it a bit predictable, it’s still a fun popcorn thriller nonetheless!
I absolutely loved The Intern! It made for a great audiobook. The alternating viewpoints was great. The Intern is fast paced and will keep you guessing until the very end. I am looking forward to reading more books by Michele Campbell.
Madison, a law student, gets the opportunity of a lifetime when her professor/idol Judge Conroy offers her an internship. Madison is excited and decides it is best not to tell the Judge that her brother has recently been arrested, fearing she will lose the opportunity.
Then the wild ride begins. Danny goes missing from prison. Madison finds out things about Kathryn Conroy, and vice versa. And you don't know what to expect, and there were definitely some surprises.
A great good versus evil story! I switched between ebook and audio and both were well done.
Many thanks to Netgalley, MacMillan Audio and St. Martin's Press for an ALC and ARC in exchange for my honest review.
WOW! What a book! Can I go back and listen to it again for the first time? I'm so jealous that you can. I love the way Michele Campbell wrote this book. Past and present and different points of view all mingle together to form a complex puzzle of deceit and death. Michele is the mastermind. I found myself cheering for one character, then another. I was never sure who was the bad guy and who was the good one. It changed from minute to minute, chapter to chapter. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of reading (or listening to) this book. It is a treasure. It is a joy. It is a gift.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher. The review is my own opinion.
This was a fast-paced thriller that kept me on my feet but lacked the depth I was personally looking for. Still an entertaining read.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

A fast-paced thriller!
Madison Rivera has just secured an internship with the renowned Judge Kathryn Conroy. However, she soon realizes that Judge Conroy is the same judge presiding over her brother Danny's case. Madison is now faced with a dilemma - should she reveal the truth to the judge and risk losing the internship opportunity of a lifetime, or keep it a secret in the hope that Judge Conroy might be able to help her brother's case? But things take a sudden turn when Danny disappears from prison, and Judge Conroy is accused of corruption. What will Madison do?
A fast-paced thriller that delves into the complex and murky world of the justice system. It explored the themes of deception, corruption, and abuse of power. While Intern is an engaging book overall, I believe that Madison's character could benefit from further development compared to the well-crafted character of Judge Conroy. Madison, as a protagonist, has the potential to be a compelling and complex character, but her portrayal in the novel feels somewhat superficial. There are glimpses of her inner struggles and motivations, but they are not fully explored or fleshed out when compared to Jude Conroy.
All in all, an entertaining read. Perfect for fans of legal thrillers.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Michele Campbell, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
Having read and enjoyed several of Michele Campbell's previous books, I was happy to see that a new one was coming, one with a premise that sounded promising. And it certainly delivered on that promise. This is the story of two intelligent women who are thrown together in a cat & mouse game by family circumstances in each of their lives - but can they trust each other? And who's the cat, and who's the mouse? Madison is a driven and promising law student, Kathryn is the federal judge who inspired Madison to pursue a law career. Kathryn's offer of an internship in her office is not only a major coup for her potential legal career, it's also an opportunity to get information about her brother's court case on drug charges that he swears were a setup. We learn about the backgrounds of both women and the paths that lead them to their current situations. And we wonder - how far will each go to reach her objective? I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the narration by Sarah Mollo-Christensen, she did a nice job of giving each of the characters their own voice.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
I did not really know what to expect when I began this title. I saw the cover countless times within the bookstagram community and figured I should give it a go. Thank you to Netgally and MacMillion audio for a copy in exchange for my most honest opinion.
I felt that the premise of this book had a lot of potential but it fell short for me towards the end. The various plot twist in the story definitely kept me tuned in but many of them were very predictable. I really think the intern should've gotten more of lick back since she was put into mess unknowingly.
In regards to the audio, I did not care for the narrators voice. I think it is also very deliberate to have a Hispanic character and make very few references in the text or even the dialect. The narrator's voice did not change my perceptions of the book but it definitely did not add to my enjoyment either.
Great narration and great book. Really kept me on my toes.
There were some parts where I rolled my eyes at the characters big moral dilemma, but I also knew it wouldn’t make much of a story without it.
Thanks for this arc. This book was great from the start…loved the main character and the whole “sopranos” vibe of the corrupt judicial system.
The internship of a lifetime turns into a dangerous cat & mouse game seeped in corruption & betrayal
Madison Rivera is on top of the world when she lands an internship with her much admired professor and respected judge, Kathryn Conroy. Both women are ambitious, intelligent and pulled themselves up from humble beginnings. But both women also harbor secrets from the other side of the law. Secrets that are at odds with the lives they lead.
Full of betrayal, corruption, family secrets, lies and deadly twists this was another win for me by Michelle Campbell. Read if you enjoy legal based thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat.
This book was very fast paced and a fun legal thriller. I forsee it being an awesome movie! I haven't read much of Campbell's work, but this is the push I needed to check out more!
I love a good legal thriller. "The Intern" did not disappoint. Madison is a Harvard law student who just landed a job as an intern with her favorite law professor and Federal Judge Kathryn Conroy.. The only problem is she left out a major detail in her interview, her brother Danny has been arrested on federal drug charges. Both Madison, and Kathryn are keeping secrets from each other. Is Madison just a pawn? Is Judge Conroy involved in corruption?
This is written in a dual point of view between Madison and Judge Conroy. I loved learning about Kathryn's past and how it all tied into the story. This was an entertaining, fast paced read and if you enjoy legal thrillers give this one a read. Thanks NetGalley for an ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This book started off a little slow, but once Madison started working for the judge things really picked up. This book was full of so many twists and turns. For the longest time I thought the judge was in on the conspiracy and really felt for her. This was a really good mystery and was thrilling.
What a FANTASTIC read! Loved this story that morphed from college law student to mob activity and back. Highly recommend - especially as an audiobook.

When a Harvard law student gets mixed up with her judge/professor things get dangerous fast. Madison Rivera comes from a rough background. Her brother seems to always be in trouble with the law. But when opportunity comes knocking and she’s offered an internship with her favorite professor who is also a judge, she leaves her brother out if and takes the job.
Things are great and the judge even asks Madison to house/cat sit but that’s where things get complicated. Is this judge dirty? Is she on the take? Who has control of her? And where does this leave Madison?
This is a fast paced thriller you won’t want to put down.
I wasn’t sure where this was going at first, but after the first part I was hooked!! I loved how this was split up and how each section left you hanging and wanting more. There were twists I didn’t see coming. I thought this was well written and all the details lined up. This didn’t leave me confused and wrapped up nicely.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The Intern by Michele Campbell is about Madison Rivera a Harvard college student who gets an internship with Judge Kathryn Conroy who she admires greatly. However Madison has a secret, her brother was arrested and Conroy is the judge on his case. Then everything changes when her brother goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption and the judge becomes Madison's mentor.
I had not read a novel by Michele Campbell until this one and I am happy that I did. You never knew what was going to come next at each moment. As the characters get boxed in and are manipulated by those around them, they have to figure out how to keep the others happy to stay safe themselves. Madison gets herself wrapped up in things she doesn't understand while trying to figure out who the judge really is.
I liked Madison's character, as she was relatable in the situation she was put in. It makes you wonder what you would do if you were in that situation. As someone who has worked really hard for my career and knows how hard it is to get a position in careers like this I understand her thought process. She wants to do what is right but she also wants to impress the person she admires and keep her position.
Overall, I really enjoyed this thriller and it was great as an audiobook. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves police procedural books as well as thrillers.
Thanks so much to @netgalley for the chance to provide feedback for Michele Campbell’s The Intern. This was fast-paced, told from dual POV. Madison, a Harvard law
student who wants desperately to get ahead despite her little brother’s checkered past, and Kathryn, a high powered judge. When Madison realizes that she’s now interning for the woman who holds her brother’s fate in her hand, she’ll do just about anything.
Fast-paced. The plot was a little sketchy at first, but I was so glad that I kept reading! Twisty and excellent narration!
This book was fantastic! It was a true slow burn - but so so worth it. Once it got to the "good stuff", there was so much action/suspense. It was a very How to get away with murder vibe - which is not usually my style, and probably why it took me some time to get into it. But it tied up all loose ends perfectly and was truly entertaining. The narration was on point and an ideal voice meant for audio. Highly recommend!
