I love anything law related so this audio book was great, in my opinion. Madison Rivera is a Harvard Law School student who interns for a judge, who is also one of her professors, and the person who has inspired her to go into law when she was in private school. Madison's brother Danny, meanwhile has been arrested on drug charges and is in prison, waiting to hear from the judge, who is Judge Conroy, Madison's professor. Madison doesn't tell the judge that she has a sibling, at first, afraid that she won't get the internship, so when the judge begins to ask Madison to do "a favor" for her, and Madison starts to question the judge's honesty, the judge in turn question's Madison about the lie she told regarding her brother.
There is a cast of characters that are involved in racketeering and illegal procedures, from the lawyer assigned to Madison's brother, the DA, the policeman who arrested Danny, and the judge. Is the judge innocent in all of these charges? Who is setting up who, and who is trying to find their way out of this mess with the feds, while providing information about the others? It gets a bit twisty in the middle, but I really enjoyed it. Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the ARC and NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion.
If I had read the physical book, I think I would've DNFed it. Glad I listened to it. It was pretty ok and I was entertained, but it's also very predictable, and unreal. The main character really pissed me off, being too naive for someone who's supposed to be so smart.
4+ stars
Let me start by saying that I was going to be VERY upset if the cat plot line hadn’t been worked out satisfactorily; thankfully, I didn’t have to worry too much. I enjoyed much of this book, including the academic and legal settings (which is great because I wasn’t initially sold on the law/legal aspect of it all). I liked the writing and storytelling style, I found some of the protagonist’s decisions understandable, and I enjoyed the perspective shifts. All in all, although it wasn’t a perfect thriller, it was still a pretty good one.
"Some debts went beyond money."
One of many realizations for the dual character driven mystery thriller, The Intern, by intricate author Michele Campbell. To be honest, this story should be titled The Judge because it's Federal Judge Kathryn Conroy that drives this twisty plot.
Madison is the epitome of a good girl, a good student. She has earned scholarships and worked hard all through her education and when her hero law school professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy offers her a coveted internship in her office, all her sacrifices are worth it.
It all comes to a screeching halt when Madison's brother is incarcerated on federal drug charges. He claims everyone was in on framing him including the judge who gives him the maximum sentence, Yes the judge is Kathryn!
Madison refuses to believe the worst of the judge but as she gets closer to her there is a definite sense of danger, something is going on but is the judge just an intense mentor or a corrupt politician or possibly a victim of foreboding circumstances and poor choices? Maybe all three?!
The forever talented voice actress Sarah Mollo-Christensen is quite remarkable at portraying two distinct personalities between the intern and the judge. The innocent youthful keep the faith of Madison is in such contrast to the ever weariness of Kathryn; especially when she feels most alone, "No one was there; just ghosts from the past that refuse to die."
This writer has created a fast paced, OMG reveals, and complex character plot teaching us how to do a mystery thriller and I'm a grateful studious intern.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from MacMillan Audio via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
I love a good legal thriller. And make no mistake, this is a fantastic legal thriller. This is my second book by Michele Campbell, and she is now an autobuy for me!
Madison is a law student at Harvard. She dreams of being a lawyer, and by all accounts, she is an outstanding law student. She loves her mother and she loves her brother. When the story begins, Madison's brother is in some legal trouble. He tells his sister and mother that he did not commit the crime he has been convicted of, and that the people involved in his case are corrupt. This includes the judge, Kathryn Conroy. Madison doesn't believe her brother where Judge Conroy is concerned - she has been an inspiration to Madison for years. She is one of Madison's professors at Harvard, and then the judge offers her an internship that is too good to refuse. This is where the story truly begins.
There are so many twists and turns in this book. Some of them are so subtle, and I did not see them coming. The story is told from both Madison's and Judge Conroy's perspectives. There are so many players in this book that it would be easy for the reader to get lost and confused. This never happens. The story is sharp and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It all comes to a head in a way that I never expected. The ending is incredible, and I loved the last page!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book. The narrator is fantastic! It is out now. If you love a terrific legal thriller, pick this one up. I highly recommend it!
*****I received this on audiobook free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book was a recent Book Of The Month pick. I had kicked myself for not choosing it. Fortunately I received this on audiobook! I was thrilled!!
This book did not disappoint. So many twists and turns. When your past casts a negative view on your current situation things need to change.
I had characters that I loved and others that I disliked but it would change all throughout the story. There was a wonderful storyline! A fantastic read.
The audiobook narrator did a wonderful job. Very easy to listen to.
This is such a great legal thriller. Read this in a day. It was fast-paced, and I wanted answers so I couldn't put it down.
You get two point of views and really two stories in one. Easy to follow and wrapped up in the end really well.
I enjoy seeing the behind the scenes of legal actions and systems.
Thank you @netgalley @michelecampbellbooks @stmartinspress @macmillan.audio for the ARC & ALC. The audio was narrated so well!

I was so excited when I received an ARC of Michele Campbell’s newest audiobook! The narrator did an amazing job of portraying all of the characters and I highly recommend this version. The author is one of my favorites and I enjoyed this audiobook so much.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC audiobook of The Intern! This was a slow burn of a story that kept me interested and guessing the ending the entire time. I couldn’t stop listening to this one! Definitely will be recommending this to friends and family!
Well written book. I enjoyed the audiobook. Easy to follow and kept my attention. I would Recommend this to someone who wants a non scary thriller.
Madison is a law student who's offered the internship position that is a dream come true for her. It's working for a judge that she idolizes and she feels that it's too good to be true. At the same time all this is going on, her brother is being arrested and convicted on drug charges. It all sounds fishy to Madison so she's shocked when she hears that the judge she is now working for was involved.
There are multiple twists and turns with this storyline. You are continually wondering who you can trust. I'm not going to tell too much because I don't want to risk ruining anything. I'll just say this is a good one and is definitely worth the read.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The audiobook was well done with solid narration that really helped pull the reader/listener into the story. 4 stars
Thank you to NetGalley for copies of both the ebook and audiobook.. I voluntarily chose to read/listen to and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Thank you to both Netgalley and the publisher for the option to read and review.
The Intern was a fun ride, with a lot of twists along the way. At the end of the day, I didn't care much for either of the main characters, but I found the ending to be quite satisfying. I would definitely check out another book by this author.
The Intern is a riveting legal thriller with excellent twists and interesting characters! I listened to it in two days, I didn’t want to turn it off. I enjoyed the dual point of view. Both Madison and Kathryn are strong complicated characters and enjoyed seeing how their stories intertwined. The Intern is fast paced and captivating. It has complicated family dynamics, strong female characters, and will satisfy fans of police procedurals, legal thrillers, and law enforcement shows!
I really enjoyed this book. It follows two women whose stories become intertwined.
Madison lands her dream internship working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. The problem is that her brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. Madison fears that is she tells the judge that Danny is her brother, she will lose her internship.
Danny thinks the judge is in on the scheme to have him take the blame for a drug bust. He goes missing from jail. Madison has to start investigating the judge, whom she has idolized for most of her life to figure out if she is a criminal.
Who is telling the truth? Can either women be trusted?
Madison Rivera is a student at Harvard Law. She is determined, hardworking, and so grateful to have been given the chance at an internship with one of her professors, Judge Kathryn Conroy . When Madison’s brother ends up in jail on a drug charge, she is afraid that his current choices will pose an obstacle for her career path. In a quick turn of events, Madison and Judge Conroy are forced into an unlikely bond. They must work together to save each other.
It was easy to become invested in Michelle Campbell’s characters. Each person’s personality was made up of several layers, secrets, and setting events. The beginning of the novel was slower than I would have liked, but the second half really picked up. This was an enjoyable legal drama and I’m happy to have picked it up.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy to review. The premise intrigued me and it didn’t go how I’d expected. The writing kept me hooked and I wanted to know the outcome of the Madison-Kathryn relationship. There were a lot of characters that popped up and I got a bit confused but overall enjoyed the story.
I had a lot of fun with this one. A legal thriller where it seemed like everything was impossible. The characters are that great mix of unlikable and likable. Your rooting for them in so many ways and thinking what the heck are you doing!
The narration was fantastic, the reading kept me coming to back to the audiobook and wanting more of the story.
Thank you to Macmillion Audio and Netgalley for my #gifted copy.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC of "The Intern" by Michele Campbell. I had this on my TBR shelf for quite a while and i was suprised by the late add from the publisher. I love a good courtroom drama and this scratched that itch. I don't read them often, and good ones are tough to find. This book was up and down for me. I appreciated the story being told from more than one perspective and the secrets everyone seemed to have. Slow burn to build it up and the payoff was a sweet reward.
The Intern is a fast paced story, taking you from Boston to DC, knee deep in corruption and the political espionage of a mafia controlled judge and her intern whose only trying to clear her brothers name.
Michele Campbell does an amazing job of weaving this story through different POVs and time hops - where you think you have all the information, you really only have a sliver. Where you think you know motives - well, you just quite frankly don’t. And when you think you’ve figured out who is going down for the crime and who is getting off free…try again. I absolutely loved the way the book was paced - it was enough to build suspense and give the reader insight into how this all happened, but it was also not enough to make the story too predictable or unfolding too quickly to follow. There were parts where I had to go back and reread a section/replay a section of the audio book because a detail caught my attention and I wanted to double check my suspicion or connection.
As far as narration goes - I felt like the narrator did a great job being clear and easy to listen to. I could clearly understand her at even a 2.0 speed, and could still distinguish between her different character voices. I felt like pacing was great and the inflection and tone changed in a way that did the plot points justice to the story.
Overall this was so well done - I haven’t read a thriller like this in a while and it was so fun. Definitely a five star read and an author I’ll be returning to in the future.
