They say never meet your heroes, but Michelle Campbell shows us a whole new side to that in her book "the intern"
The dream job quickly becomes a nightmare for Madison as every possible mobster/legal trope comes to life in front of her. Written from dual perspective of Madison and Judge Conroy, this story will keep you captivated and also pull at your heartstrings. Fast paced and full of characters you will love while you still aren't sure of their intentions.
As special thank you to the author for trying up the Lucy Cats strings at the end: I hate it when animals in a story are forgotten.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my copy of this audiobook
If you have any type of legal drama, I'm in. Yet, if you're looking for some courtroom thrill keep looking. This book is about something completely different. While the main characters are consecutively a Harvard law student and a federal judge, the law itself is not a hero. The story more than anything, is about the connection both characters share and how they will approach getting out of some shady peril.
For me, it was a strong 3 stars because I had fun listening to it, yet it didn't make sense to me in many parts. The naive Harvard student who has absolute trouble thinking for herself, drove me up and down the wall. I had trouble placing her as a real character with her own agency. As story progressed she seemed more and a more background driving up the story rather than main character. On the other side I had the character of the judge who we get to know from two perspectives: the fan student and her own. Those two perspectives at times didn't create one person, rather this Jekyll/Hyde kinda creature. So all boils down to realism here. Other than that, despite not being impressed, I enjoyed having this audiobook as a company to household chores. The narrator did a good job differentiating voices, so I had no trouble following at all.
There is just something that hooks me when it comes to legal thrillers and/or procedural thriller, and this one had it all!

I can’t even count how many times I audibly gasped, at surprises I did not see coming (which is huge for me because I usually can predict “plot twists” even the wildest ones), but this book kept me on my feet!
I was lucky enough to be able to tandem read this book with an eARC (from @stmartinspress) and an ALC (from @macmillian.audio ) the book was great and even though I didn’t think it could be so the audiobook as well as the narrator was really AMAZING! I was able to comfortably listen at 2x speed and the voice acting gave unsettling edge and atmosphere which I absolutely LOVED!

Special thanks to Macmillan audio for the ALC for review!

This book was so enjoyable.
I loved the aspect of family, trauma, past, drugs, and everything else. It was written wonderful and I really enjoyed it. I can appreciate a well written plot, that leaves you wanting more and easy to binge.
I can’t say anything I didn’t like.
Madison Rivera, a Harvard Law Student secures an internship working for her idol, Judge Kathryn Conroy, but they both have secrets that could destroy their careers. The Intern is a fast-paced, thriller about status, ambition, family and murder.
I have to admit it took a little while to get used to the narration and the beginning was a little slow for me. However, I definitely became invested, probably halfway through Part 1. I enjoyed the 2 POVs of the MCs which was a big factor in what kept me so engaged. There were a lot of things happening, that originally didn't seem like they were relevant or connected but Michele Campbell did a phenomenal job of bringing it all together. There were a lot of twists that you didn't necessarily see coming, which created more intrigue and mystery. The plot itself was slightly far-fetched in my opinion, but I think that the character development and the struggles that they were faced with were relatable. This was a great legal thriller that made you want to know more. There was just the right amount of mystery, suspense and betrayal to make your heart pound and feel for the characters. I also have to say, I really liked the ended, it was perfectly unexpected and it just fit right.

I had such a great time listening to this audiobook. I listen to it over the course of two different hikes that I went on, and it had so many twists, and turns that it kept me super engaged and invested in the story.
The Intern is a twisty, convoluted, fun thrill ride with complicated characters and intertwining motives.
A striving Harvard law student's brother gets arrested in a drug bust and at the same time she's approached by one of her professors to intern at her office. She admires the judge but is concerned that she's also presiding over her brother's case. Her mother sees the opportunity to get information and bolster the brother's claims that he was set up, but she's wary.
Things get less formulaic when we learn the judge's backstory and how she became enmeshed in organized crime through her unfortunate upbringing. The judge and intern alternately use and bond with each other, and play the various angles of federal investigators, office politics, and the ever-watching crime organization.
It's a fun, quick read with plenty of action and intrigue, and not too many plot holes or time gaps.

How am I just discovering Michele Campbell?! If you want a fast paced, legal mystery thriller, then read The Intern or better yet, the audiobook!
The story is told with dual POV’s. It goes back in time to give you history of one of the main characters. The story is executed very well. Sarah Mollo-Christensen does a wonderful job with the narration of the POV’s and setting the tone of this great story. There were many twists that when I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong! It’s a well developed story that simply captivates you!
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for giving me the opportunity to listen to this advanced copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

📝Synopsis 📝
Madison attends Harvard as has applied as an intern for the prestigious Judge Kathryn Conroy. Madison has a secret agenda, and Kathryn has skeletons in her closet that haunt her every move. Through Dual POV/Timelines we go to the root of their why’s and what they chose to do when all secrets are brought to light.
💭My Thoughts 💭
The characters were extremely likable, and I hated the bad characters to the core. The way Madison did everything she could in her power to see through her brothers safety was bad@$$. The shame and perseverance Kathryn endured and overcame really hit me. One detail about paternity really made me cringe, but I really did enjoy the plot. The ending felt a bit rushed, but I enjoyed how it ended. It was very predictable , and I struggled pinning this as a thriller for that very reason. The Boston Theme was my favorite. The mix of Harvard and the corruption in politics was on point and very detailed. The narration would have been better if there was two different voices (one for each woman). I finished this in one day because I really wanted to see how it all ended.

The Intern kept promising to be great. Or at least pretty good. It just continued to live up to "OK". We had two supposedly intelligent women. But they made ridiculous after ridiculous decisions. Both of them. Most of those decision centered solidly men who were using them. Such a waste. They could have worked together from the beginning.
This book wandered back and forth deciding what it wanted to be when it grew up. It ended up being stuck in its own adolescence. In that space, it felt like a grownup when it finally did something responsible.
The book ended up being OK, but nothing special.
4.5 rounded up
Madison Rivera is a law student at Harvard who lands an internship to work for her professor, and Judge, Kathryn Conroy. Unfortunately for Madison, Judge Conroy is the one handling her brother’s (Danny) criminal case.
When Danny acuses Judge Conroy of corruption and other crimes, Madison finds herself stuck in the middle not knowing what or who to believe. Could Danny be right about her?
I enjoyed this book so much! It started off a bit slow, but once it picked up, I was fully invested. This book was filled with secrets, drama, and tragedies.
I loved getting both Madison and Kathryn’s POV. The narrator was fantastic and did a great job bringing these characters to life. I do have to say that I was way more invested in Kathryn’s life than Madison’s - that woman had secrets for days.
Pick this one up if you enjoy:
- legal topics
- family drama
- multiple POVs
Thank you so much Netgalley, Macmillan Audio, and the audio for this ALC.
Happy pub week! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
This was an easy five stars for me. You will like this book if you enjoy:
- dirty lawyers and cops
- conspiracies
- many twists and turns- none too drastic, but more like waves of twists.
- a surprisingly pleasant ending
Legal Thriller Done Right
"The Intern" by Michele Campbell is a spine-tingling, thought-provoking legal thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat from beginning to end. If reading could be a full-time job, delving into well-crafted thrillers like this one would make it a dream come true. Michele Campbell has masterfully woven a gripping narrative that's impossible to put down, and I owe my discovery of this gem to NetGalley, which introduced me to the talented author.
My journey through this enthralling tale was made even more immersive by the outstanding narration in the audiobook version. The skillful narrator breathed life into the two main characters, making them not just voices but individuals we genuinely care about. It's a testament to the audiobook's quality that I couldn't stop listening, driven by an insatiable desire to uncover the mysteries and secrets lurking in every corner of the story.
Campbell's genius lies in her ability to balance character development and plot pacing flawlessly. The heart of the novel beats strongly through its main protagonists, Madison Rivera and Judge Kathryn Conroy. Madison, a determined Harvard Law student, lands her dream summer internship working for the esteemed Judge Conroy. However, her dreams collide with harsh reality when her brother, Danny, is arrested on federal drug charges, and Judge Conroy is assigned to his case. The weight of Madison's ambitions and familial loyalty intertwine as she endeavors to help her brother and unveil the truth behind his vehement claims of innocence. Madison's character arc is a compelling exploration of the relentless pursuit of justice and the sacrifices one must make in that pursuit.
Kathryn Conroy's perspective, on the other hand, offers readers a glimpse into her dark past, marked by poverty, adversity, and the difficult choices she made to rise to her esteemed position. It's a testament to Campbell's storytelling prowess that Kathryn's character is just as engaging and relatable as Madison's. The contrast and synergy between these two characters drive the narrative forward, creating a mesmerizing dynamic.
"The Intern" doesn't rely on implausible plot twists or senseless explanations to maintain its intrigue. Instead, it weaves a web of revelations that are both shocking and entirely plausible within the context of the story. The author ensures that every twist and turn is rooted in the characters' motivations and actions, resulting in a deeply satisfying and well-executed conclusion.
In conclusion, Michele Campbell's "The Intern" is a remarkable legal thriller that skillfully navigates the realms of ambition, justice, and family loyalty. The dual perspectives of Madison and Kathryn provide a rich and multifaceted narrative that keeps readers engaged and invested. With a well-constructed plot, believable revelations, and a satisfying resolution, this book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a thought-provoking mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to experience this gripping tale.
This is an arc from Netgalley so thank you for the opportunity to read this book. This book was really good! It was about a Harvard Law Student who went to Intern for a judge she admired so much. For awhile I thought I knew what was going on and it was so perfectly plotted out. I absolutely LOVED the ending! Had me smiling.
This is a book I would highly recommend to others who love thrillers or crime stories.
This was a twisty legal thriller with strong John Grisham vibes and perfect for fans of the show How to get away with murder. I really enjoyed it, especially on audio narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review. This was my first book by the author and I'll definitely be checking out their backlist!
I had hoped The Intern would grab my attention., but it felt more like an assignment. The plot was predictable. A bit of a dissapointment
There’s a lot going on in this story and it’s told from two points of views over different timelines, which might make it confusing, but it all comes together nicely in the end. It’s fast paced and fascinating, exploring a legal system that is easily influenced by a few power players. There are some decisions made by the characters that will leave you shaking your head but overall, an action-packed, exciting read.
The Intern by Michelle Campbell is a Great mystery thriller.
Madison gets the internship for Judge Kathryn Conroy, someone who she has looked up to. But there are secrets that both are keeping from each other. The story kept me wanting to see how everything played out. It’s read in a dual timeline in which we learn about Judge Kathryn‘s past and upbringing.
I enjoyed reading The Intern and would recommend to others.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC in return for an honest review.
THIS WAS VERY ENTERTAINING!
A fairly fast-paced, dual POV Crime Thriller about Harvard law student Madison and federal judge Kathryn. While the story started out a little slow... by 30%, things really picked up and went from there. Having Kathryn's POV def helped move the story along and helped us to better understand her motivations.
Filled with so any secrets, lies, twists, and turns - this was just a fun and easy-to-listen-to thriller!
Rating: 3.5 stars
