I loved this book by Jennifer A. Nielsen. I didn't realize it was based on a real person until the end. It made the story even more incredible. Lidia is a strong female main character, and her passion to help others is evident on every page. The Holocaust was a sad part of history, but this book gives young readers a glimpse of what it was all about. They will want to know if Lidia gets to be part of the Resistance and how she was able to aid others. A page-turner for sure!
There are only a few historical fiction authors I love. Jennifer Nielsen is one of them. I have loved all of her books and this is not exception. I learned a lot from this story and did some researching on my own. The story is well written and engaging. I admired the strength and courage of Lidia
This book was absolutely breathtaking and awe=inspiring, all the more so for being based on the true life story of a real young Polish resistance fighter named Lidia Zakrzewski, who deserves to be a household name for her incredible defiance and acts of bravery. Everything I have ever read by Jennifer Nielsen is always a treat and of the highest quality, and this book was no different. What sets her apart is her breathtaking prose, her excellent characterization, and the quality of her historical accuracy. Combine that with resistance fighters, music (I myself am a pianist and enjoyed the parts spent on Chopin, etc), and the incredible bravery of the Warsaw ghetto Jews and the Polish men, women, and children who helped them during WWII and you are swept away yet glued to your seat! Absolutely wonderful! I recommend all her books, but I believe this one is my favorite and her best yet! TEN STARS!
A great look into history. Love and strength for ones country. "Cello" is determined to join the Resistance and take a stand for Poland. A truly amazing read.
Another solid middle grades novel by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Uprising tells the story of Lidia Durr, a resistance fighter during the War City Uprising. The story is, as always, well written and brings the characters to life. Uprising will make a great addition to any library (campus or classroom) and would be a great addition to any book club/lit circle collections.
Jennifer Nielsen has done it again. I read her book A Night Divided years ago and fell in love with her writing style so I was excited to have the opportunity to receive an eARC of this book, Uprising. This is the story of Lidia Durr and her life as a messenger for the resistance during the uprising in Warsaw. This book was written for middle grades 3-8 and as a homeschooling mom I will 100% be adding it to our history curriculum this year. Lidia was an extraordinarily brave girl, and her story and the stories of the other members of the resistance were inspiring to say the least. I absolutely recommend this book and feel that it deserves a five star rating.
"Uprising" is such an incredible book. I recommend it for upper-middle grade readers- it would make a great English-Social Studies/History book for middle-high schoolers studying about World War II and the Holocaust. The bravery, resilience, and heart that these characters demonstrated in a one of the most tumultuous time periods in our world history is remarkable.
Wow, this book was very well written and engaging. It’s based on the life of Lidia Durr and her time in the Warsaw City Uprising. She worked as a messenger during the resistance fight against the Germans. The book is written for grades 3-8. As a parent, I would read the book first to make sure my child was prepared for the war content and all that brings. It’s an important part of history and kids will love and admire the strength of an everyday girl fighting for her city and country. I enthusiastically give this book two thumbs up and recommend as a book adults should read as well as research the Uprising and Lidia Durr.
