Georgina Lees has smashed it with this book. I thought the story and characters were extremely well written. A really good whodunit story.
This was my first book by Georgina Lees and it was entertaining. I enjoyed the different POVs and way the story was told, from Katy's mom in present time, the documentary episodes and from Katy on the day she disappeared. There were plenty of possibilities about what happened, who might have had something to do with it, and the ripple affect of her disappearance. I struggled with how Grace wouldn't let anyone else be affected by Katy's disappearance; it felt like only she as the mother, was allowed to have lost someone, be angry/sad or affected by it. When everything finally comes to light, I struggled with the "reason"; I understand there probably are things like this that do happen, but it still feels far fetched to me. Overall it was an easy, entertaining read that kept my attention. This book might not make me read Lees' backlist but fans of her's will likely enjoy it and should think about adding it to their TBR.

It has been ten years since college student and aspiring investigative journalist Katy disappeared. Since then, the case has gone cold and Katy’s mother Grace has felt alone in her quest to discover what happened to her daughter. That all changes when Grace is approached to take part in a new documentary special exploring Katy’s disappearance.
As the documentary special ignites new interest, Grace finds she is not any closer to getting the answers she wants regarding Katy; if anything, more questions are being raised. Who in Katy’s life would have wanted to hurt her? What secrets was she hiding from everyone, including Grace? And what could she have uncovered in her investigation so terrible someone would have wanted her permanently silenced?
Told from the perspectives of both Katy and Grace, this is an entertaining read, but the characters are frustrating. Katy is a bit of an enigma throughout the story; it is hard to determine whether she fits the idealized image Grace created of her or the less likable version told by others in the story. Where Katy is a mystery, the opposite can be said of Grace. While she is a sympathetic character, she is also careless and hotheaded, and this makes her a challenge. By going rogue in her investigations, she manages to make more mess and the chaotic energy she exudes is grating.
Overall, the plot of the book is fairly fast-paced and it is a solid choice for a vacation read. However, the last portion of the book not only feels a bit rushed but also manages to blend being both far-fetched and predictable. While fans of the true crime craze will enjoy this book, the last part of the book could have been better developed, and loyal readers of the genre will find that frustrating.
Grace is involved in a new true crime documentary about her missing daughter, Katy. Katy went missing ten years ago and although there were suspects, no one knew exactly what happened to her. Will this new documentary finally reveal what really happened?
I enjoy books that explore true crime/podcast themes, although I have read quite a few recently. The story is well written, intriguing and there are a few twists and turns. The characters are well written and I enjoyed the different perspectives. There are some dark themes running through! Overall this was a good mystery but quite similar to other books I have read exploring these topics. Saying that, I would definitely read another book by this author. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
Just wow! So fun to discover a new to me author! I loved everything about this book. It starts at a good clip and just rolled the tension. So many captivating twists and turns. Crazy great characters and dynamics kept me reading long into the night. A big thank you to NetGalley, Georgina Lees and One More Chapter for the opportunity to read and review this cracker of a book.
This is the story of a missing girl, a grieving mother and a true crime documentary. Katy was 20 when she vanished one night on her way home from work in Bristol. She was a trainee investigative reporter. Initially the police had three suspects. Her boyfriend with whom she had had a row; her colleague who people said stalked her and her father. However despite intense investigation the police had never solved the mystery. Told in dual timelines and from the POVS of Grace and Katy this was a compelling read.
Briefly, 10 years later and her mother Grace has never given up hope that Katy might return. With the police case closed she keeps searching on line for some sort of information that might help. Grace is approached by a film company asking her to take part in a documentary they are making. However, it doesn’t give the answers she hoped for so Grace keeps investigating.
A compelling mystery thriller with some great twists and turns. Good characters in Grace and Katy and some shocking revelations as the book progresses and an ending I never expected. Good read.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
What happened to Katy? She was a young journalist who disappeared 10 years ago. Was it her boyfriend. Her professor, or her clingy friend? Her deviasted mother refuses to believe she is dead. The closer she gets the scary it gets as someone doesn’t want the truth out! What happened to Katy?
What a great crime thriller! I didn't like the ending much, I get it but I don't have to like it! Lol this book had a bit of everything! It had high suspense, action, murder, mystery, kidnapping, great detective work, a great who done it and some crazy twists and turns! The storyline was so very interesting and had me glued to my kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
This was my first Georgina Lees novel and certainly not my last.
True Crime follows a grieving mother, Grace, whose daughter, Katy, went missing ten years ago. Was it the boyfriend? Was it her professor? Was it the guy from work who was obsessed with her? The police investigated, but eventually, Katy’s case went cold.
In the present day, Grace is approached by an executive producer looking to do a documentary on Katy hoping to shine a light on her cold case. Grace reluctantly agrees to do the documentary with the hopes that new tips will come in. As the documentary airs, Katy is presented in a poor light. This ignites a fire in Grace who has never stopped looking for her daughter as she works to uncover what truly happened to Katy the night she disappeared.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and was a fast read. The novel was action-packed, had twists and turns, and was suspenseful. It was also incredibly heartbreaking to see just how far a mother would go to find out what happened to her child.
A massive thank you to Georgina Lees, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
There seem to be an awful lot of books out there right now which seem to be going for the whole cold case, podcast/docuseries/whatever happened to 'insert long term missing person here' but luckily for Georgina Lees not many people do it as well as she does.
The missing person here is Katy, who disappeared without a trace ten years ago. After being subject of a podcast, a new documentary team are looking to re-examine Katy's disappearance and encourage her mother, Grace, to agree to participate.
When the documentary starts to shine a poor light on Katy herself, Grace and others begin to get downhearted however the series opens up old wounds and might just discover what did happen 10 years ago....
As I say, there are a number of these types of novels around just now and I have read most of them. This is definitely one of the better ones and tells the story with excellent precision. The story is told mainly from the perspective of Grace as she searches for answers however some chapters are 'episodes' of the documentary and we also get an occasional chapter from Katy on the day she went missing.
This format works really well, it keeps the story fresh (rather than just having one POV) and it allows the story to drip feed out until we reach the conclusion which definitely packs a punch.
Thanks to Netgalley and HarperCollins, One More Chapter for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
I raced through Georgina Lees’ ‘The Girl Upstairs’ a few years ago and was therefore highly delighted to be granted an ARC of ‘True Crime’. As in her earlier work, Lees constructs a novel around fate of a contemporary, believably-drawn female character. It has been several years since journalist Katy disappeared, seemingly without a trace. But what will happen when her suspicious disappearance is investigated for the benefit of a sensational ‘true crime’ series? Brilliantly executed, this is a thriller that lives up to all demands of the genre. I highly recommend it.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for the free ARC that I received that allowed me to read this thriller and to write this unbiased review.
A must read gritty thriller. Twists and turns galore and a real page turner. Not for the faint hearted but i loved every moment. Georgina Lees does it again. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
A decade ago, a young journalist disappeared, leaving behind a bereft mother and a host of unanswered questions.
Was she taken by someone she knew? Was it in fact, as it so often was, the boyfriend? For was it an opportunistic crime?
Her mother Grace has never been able to come to terms with Katie's disappearance. While she continues to investigate, she has not succeeded in discovering what happened to her young daughter.
Now a true crime podcast may finally be able to find out what Grace has not managed to. But in the process, it will put others through the wringer. And somebody may not be willing to allow anything to be discovered at all...
I don't read true crime or listen to podcasts on it, because I find it hard not to think about the facts that real people's lives have been affected by the events described. But I did enjoy reading Cara Hunter's Murder in the Family and Daniel Sweren-Becker's Kill Show, and like those books. This one too had the ring of authenticity. Thriller readers and true crime lovers alike should check it out.
This is absolutely outstanding. I don't know why but for some reason, probably the title, I thought this was going to be factual, a true account of a crime that actually happened. For me it's so well written thats exactly how it reads, the tragedy of missing Katy as told by her mother.
It's riveting and gripping, all building up to an explosive conclusion which I hadn't predicted.
Georgina Lees just gets better and better. This is one heck of a read.
Highly recomended.
I like watching true crime, but I do not usually like reading true crime...this talented author has written a page turner...almost like realistic fiction...Mystery and intrigue...secrets...family and friends. This is a book that will be remembered when finished. Thanks Netgalley.
True Crime by G. Lees, published by Harper Collins UK/ One More Chapter is an absolutely thrilling read that had me in knots more than one time.
Katy is a young woman who simply vanished from her desk.
Her mother Grace never gave up looking for her. Even after ten years she's still investigating, but the closer she comes to the truth - other want the past stay hidden.
A fantastic read full of unexpected twists and turns - the story deals with some sensitive subject, not for the faint of heart - consider you warned.
