I read Amy Spalding’s book in this series and knew I had to read this one. It was such a relatable story and it’s so refreshing seeing/realising you don’t have to have your life made in your mid twenties. Hell, I’m in my early 30s and still haven’t. It was lovely to see Max realise this as the story went on and realising that she needed to put herself forward in life at times instead of waiting for life to happen. I’ve learnt the hard way that this definitely doesn’t happen.
It was also a beautiful view getting to see her flourish as a person. I know this is a romance, but I related to this on a person level so much. And don’t get me wrong, the relationship with Sadie was lovely to read as it developed and I loved her character. I just really loved this one. It was also lovely to see Ari and Nina pop in too.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. At Her Service is so much fun, It has got a brilliantly bubbly premise, a great cast of characters and a lovely LGBTQIA+ romance. I loved it.
I adored this “self-improvement” romcom. Amy Spalding follows up her last novel, “For Her Consideration” focusing instead on another character - Max Van Doren, an agent’s PA.
I wish the book had focused more on the romance, but I really enjoyed Amy’s discussion on how self improvement and self actualisation often involves spending huge amounts of money.
A fun, engaging read - would definitely recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher.
At Her Service is a cute romance novel by Amy Spalding.
This was such a cute novel. It's easy to follow and switch off after a long day. The story was sweet and the main characters are likable. A cute novel that I highly recommend.
❤️ Thank you to Netgalley and the author/publisher for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this thinking we would get a cute love story with a bit of self growth along the way, and I did get that but also so much MORE too!
Max is painfully relatable, she's followed her dreams and moved to the city, got the job in her chosen industry, and is making a living, but it's not all falling into place like she thought it would. Making that tight-knit group of friends we dream of after watching them on TV is so much harder than we all realise, and it's refreshing to see a character struggling with it. (And like Max I too spent my late nights reading supergirl fanfiction)
After a disastrous day Max decides to go on her self actualisation journey and honestly I thought we would get a light version of that, that max would learn some general lessons in a time jumping 30 days and that she'd come out being who she wants to be and that would be that. I'm so, so glad we got to dig in and see her proper journey, that she had to keep self evaluating and having those hard discussions throughout, and that things didn't always work out perfectly, because life is messy. I said the same thing about Spalding's previous book For Her Consideration: it's nice to see a character having realistic and relatable growth and putting the work in to get there instead of some sort of insta-process.
Speaking of For Her Consideration, I was so pleasantly surprised to see some familiar faces pop up and get a little update on how Nina and Ari are doing! It was a nice bonus for those of us who read the previous book, and it didn't take anything away if anyone didn't, the perfect sort of cameo.
I think there's some lessons for all of us to learn as we read this one, I for one know I'm going to try harder to say yes more, and maybe even to be bold! And yes, the romance was adorable and swoon worthy too!
3.5 star book.
This was a coming of age- work on yourself, grow as a person, be confident, become who you’re supposed to be book.
Our main character Max works as an assistant in a dog eat dog producing world. She’s undervalued, over worked but loves her job. She goes above and beyond, always working after hours. Trying to get people to notice her. But it’s Hollywood. Along with that she just had a breakup and has had a crush on her bartender for quite some time.
Her influencer roommate asks her one day if she’d like to do this Program her and her team created to create the best you! During this she does tasks and sets goals of what she wants to accomplish. In doing this she learns so much about herself and her actual wants and needs. She does a complete 180 in all aspects of her life!
Not only is this a cute LGBTQ book but it has such growth and important messages in it! It does have a few mature parts but this is a great young adult or new adult book! I read it in one sitting and enjoyed my time reading it.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book overall, I didn't expect it to be as relatable as it did but that added to the reason I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Once again, love her books and this one does not disappoint, fun and sexy, love how inclusive it is and how diverse. Definitely loving this writing stule and hopping for a lot more
This book just fell flat for me. I really loved For Her Consideration, so was very excited to get my hands on this one.
I had a couple of issues with this book. The amount of conversation back and forth was very distracting. I found it so hard to get into the story when every time I turned around there was all this conversation and all these quotation marks. I also found this book to be a tad repetitive for me. Some of the exact phrases were used several times, and I was just so frustrated.
I never felt connected to any of the characters and was just annoyed. I kept waiting for the romance to start but at 50% nothing had happened and I was bored.
Because I loved For Her Consideration so much, I am thinking that this is just an off book for me and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another book by this author. This book just wasn’t the right book for me despite normally being everything I normally go for. I look forward to their next book, and while this one wasn’t for me, I do wish it all the best.
Thank you so much to the publisher and netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Max was convinced that moving to LA would make her cool, and interesting, and successful, but she's still working an assistantship job where nobody takes her seriously, she has no friends, and she can't even muster up the nerve to ask her hot bartender out. So after a particularly rough night, she agrees to do a self-actualization program her influencer roommate is promoting. And things start to get better. Sadie, the hot bartender, asks for her help on a project, she finally starts dressing the way she'd like, and it looks like things are going better at work. Suddenly, Max has a social life, the wardrobe she's always wanted, and a real shot with Sadie.
Honestly, this book made me want to make some changes in my own life. Max's issues were fairly relatable (even if the actual specifics weren't) and I loved watching her grow into herself. For a while I was very leery of one of the characters, but I ended up being wrong about them, and really liked how everything wrapped up.
