This is a short, fun children’s picture book about a cryptic fighting its fears. Santa needs a helping hand Christmas has come and Rudolph is on holiday!! What drama. I loved the questions answered section at the end. Thank you to 8th Circle Press and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine.
I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Start singing the beloved Christmas song, "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," but in the timeless tale of the infamous Mothman! Follow Mothman as he tries to join the villagers in their merrymaking. He may be different than the typical reindeer, but with his glowing red eyes, Santa wants him to lead the other reindeer. It is a hilarious take on the holiday song, on one lonely mothman who just wants to have a merry Christmas. Sing along to this new rendition, have a cup of holiday cheer, and spend time with the locals as Christmas is now here.
Mothman's Merry Cryptid Christmas is a hilarious homage to Rudolph and his bright red nose. That, plus the beginning of a generation of kids who know what the obscure word cryptid means. 😂
Mothman is called in to take over Rudolph's position at the front of Santa's sleigh, since Rudolph is on vacation. At first, he is unsure if he can do it, so he asks Big Foot for advice. He is reminded that he needs to believe in himself and have faith that he can do it!
This is a wonderful book to reinforce to children that they need to have faith in themselves, and when they believe they can do something, they can! Fun and unique holiday book for the young reader!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
Mothman's Merry Cryptid Christmas is an adorable illustrated children's book for the youngest readers written by Andrew Shaffer. Due out 14th Nov 2023, it's 30 pages and will be available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook formats.
What a fun, quirky, and humorous holiday themed romp for all ages. Everyone knows about Rudolf, but what happens when Rudolf's off on a much needed vacation and there's nobody left to light up the way on Santa's yearly flight? This is certainly aimed a young audience, but it's charming and fun for everyone. The illustrations are simple but colorful and full of charm.
Four and a half stars. The author has included some discussion questions & answers in the back of the book. It would make a good choice for public or school library acquisition as well as home use and gift giving purposes. Definitely worth a look.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Mothman is one of my favorite cryptids so I was so excited to stumble across this delightful little book! I love the illustrations and the rhymes and that Mothman finally has his time to shine!
As someone who is fascinated by cryptids, I thought this book was great. It’s a very quick read and it was illustrated beautifully so there is no reason not to read this book.
When I saw the title and cover, I screamed aloud. Mothman is my favorite cryptid (yes, there is a list), and this festive Mothman picture book is a delight. The illustrations are adorable, and the book casts Mothman in the role of Rudolph, with the text written in the style of the carol. I am an absolute Grinch at heart, but Mothman learning to 'believe in himself' makes the holiday cuteness tolerable. This book is the right flavor of silly and nonsensical. If I had small children in my immediate life, you can bet they'd be reading this book so many times that they'd have to beg me to stop.
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me experience one single shred of holiday spirit this year by allowing me to read this picture book as an ARC.
A book made for young kids that is actually fun and had me trying to sing along with it. The art inside is really good for what it is trying to do and the writing is obviously super simple but it's for small children. Hopefully this can make kids interested in a weirder side of things.
I love the story of Mothman and I enjoyed Andrew Shaffer's novel Secret Santa, so this was a no-brainer. The artwork and the story are both hilariously funny. I was cracking up at the first drawing of Mothman "nom nomming" on a sweater. I know this is being marketed for kids, but I honestly think adults are the ones who'll find it the funniest. If I have one complaint, it's that I would love to have seen even more! Hopefully Mothman will return one day with further adventures.
This book was so adorable, I loved everything about it, the illustrations were so well done, they suited the book perfectly, the story was amazing as well, even thought is very short I could really connect with the characters. I’m sure the kids are going to be just as enthralled with this amazing book as I was. I will definitely recommend! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
I found this story cute and indirectly spirit uplifting as we follow the journey of a mothman, a cryptid who was deemed as a sign of bad omen, love by none, fear by all.
This stereotypes not only influence the humans but also penetrate into Mothman inner thought "Am I harbinger of bad luck?" Follow Mothman as he's stuck between pursuing what he wants and what people think he shouldn't do.
Overall, I think it portrays a good portrayal of believing in oneself; an important quality we should nurture in our children as early as we could. Hence, parents can use this book to entertain them with creative yet uplifting story.
This book was absolutely adorable. The illustrations are bright with strong, contrasting colors, and the rhyme scheme is perfect for a children's read-aloud. Cryptid-obsessed adults will also love this book for it's heartwarming portrayal of Mothman. I loved the detail about Rudolph being on vacation, floating in a pool with a drink. The back of the book has a short informational page about cryptids that is a nice educational addition to the story.
I would 110% recommend this to anyone interested in monsters/cryptids.
This was so fun and cute! My daughter is obsessed with both Halloween and Christmas and she kept saying this combined them— which made her very happy!! I really enjoyed reading it with her
Ha ha. This was so fun. Short and sweet. I liked the factoids in the back of the book too. If your kid is like mine and tried to watch any type of creepy pasta on YouTube the. You definitely need to read this one.
A sweet and adorable children's christmas story with a cryptid twist. I love a fun mothman story and this one was short and sweet!
This is the cutest things I have ever read. I have a niece being born in a few weeks and she has two half siblings and guess what they’re getting for Christmas? You guessed it! Absolute fear of the Mothman! But really. I really enjoyed this story and the images are awesome too!
A cute holiday book for Cryptid lovers! It seems loosely set to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and instead of Rudolph, mothman is the hero! Loved it and the illustrations!
Ok, I had absolutely no idea where this story was going until it got to the chorus :D Then I went back to the beginning and started to read while singing along.
This is such a fun read, cute and sometimes just a little creepy. And oh gosh isn't Mothman the perfect protagonist for this story? I can't understand how it's possible the original story is not told with the Mothman. He has glowing eyes, he can actually fly, and is actually creepy and feared. If you think Rudolph is too popular now for a tale about someone who's considered weird and feels defined by other's opinions until they know better, Mothman is here for you to tell (or sing) this story to a child (or anyone) who feel they are thought weirdos, feel villainized or even bullied.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the ARC.
I saw this pop up and immediately snagged it and read it! I’m a lover of cryptids and especially MothMan so this was right up my alley.
The illustrations were absolutely amazing and well done! Definitely done in a way that will absolutely keep a small child’s attention while reading. The story was adorable and I’m sure any age kid (or cryptic-obsessed adult) will love it. It’s a quickie read took me maybe 5 minutes total to read.
I have 4 year old twins that I homeschool, and I absolutely can’t wait to read this to them around Christmas time. I’ll likely even purchase a copy because I loved it so much. I don’t think it’ll be too scary for them at all, it really made MothMan such a cute lovable creature.
